John McClain Rant

Proof positive that you are not necessarily a "professional" just because you get a microphone and write for a newspaper!

John McClain went on a three minute rant filled with contradictions and belly aching about the game today. Some classy highlights:

He said that both sides of the ball stunk and that the Texans did not choke. You have to "actually be good to choke".

He angrily recounted the Bills struggles offensively and mentioned Lee Evans scoring twice and breaking a record for completions.

He then went on to refer to Daunte Robinson's comments about Losman not being very good. Robinson of course had the pick for a TD. Losman did not throw to Robinson's side the entire game. They picked on Faggins who was asleep at the wheel for the two TDs. But that didn't stop McClain from ripping Robinson and saying that "Losman just kicked your butt".

He said the Texans weren't ready to play. Untrue. The offense played very well. Their failure to convert late in the game had more to do with playcalling than it did with execution.

He mentioned that Chad Stanley great job. Ok. They had two nice plays downing the ball deep inside Buffalo territory. But in the fourth quarter, Chad punts a 34 yarder and then a 36 yarder on the final drive. He booms one on the final drive and that game may be over.

He then admonishes Carr for his "hollow record" and then says he couldn't get a first down. The last series went Gado right for 1 yard, Gado up the middle for 7 yards and then an incomplete pass from Carr. Hardly Carr's fault there. The final play was two slants to the same side of the field on third and short. This is 3rd and short 101 my friend. Buffalo in tight man and then run no rub routes, just two slants. Hollow record my rear John! McClain just finding his frustration an opportunity to rip Carr and be a Carr hater.

Someone might point out that we DID play well on offense. We moved the ball extremely effectively and Carr showed excellent decision making and showed excellent composure and movement in the pocket. John couldn't see that through his rage.

He couldn't see that we did run the ball better today, but that we need to be abel to run the ball better when there are nine people in the box. We need ot be able to bang out that last first down. The fact is, if we do bang out that last first down, the game is over and it is a win.

Our secondary struggles as it has all year long. Robinson struggled early on, but played very well today. Our other DBs are horrendous and you cannot win in this league if you cannot cover. We cannot.

But c'mon John...be a little more objective before you go on one of your childish rants. He almost sounded like one of the 700 level fans after they had a few in them. Certainly not Houston Chronicle material.

I've discounted everything he has said since He tried to pass off our drafting of mario as his "insider" info when he had no clue because he was so "sure" the texans were going to draft RB.

That record is pretty hollow when it isn't followed up with a W. Brunell set that record and he isn't even starting anymore. (aj brought that up on the other board). However Brunell scored points while setting the record and ran the Texans out of the building.

There is nothing "hollow" about David's record. Any record of 22 completions is going to populated with short passes.

The fact is the game should have been won with 3rd down and 2 yards to go and 1:49 left on the clock. Instead of running and keeping the clock going, the Texans called for a pass. It was incomplete, which stopped the clock, and left JP Losman, the second year All-American from Tulane, with enough time to drive down for the win. Losman looked good today.

Well, you did forget ONE thing about our offense--it didn't score any points in the 2nd half and Carr has now gone 4 games w/o throwing a TD....

When records and great stats start counting in the win column I will start getting excited about them.

i know a lot of people hated the last play call, including me, but can you really fault Kubes for putting the ball in the hands of the QB with the highest completion percentege in the NFL who had just completed 22 straight? Any completed pass should get 2 yards and based on Carr's day, there was abouta an 85% chance of a catch and most likley a first down.

I agree... no professionalism what so ever just a whiny temper tantrum. For someone who didnt see the game (me) he gave little info on how the game was actually played. Great job john!

John just tells it like it you cant blame him for that he's not the type of person to be on someone's jockstrap for tying a record when it was clear you that the record tying person had a very poor throw on third down and that might of cost us the game. the offense never had a trip to the endzone in the second half if i remember correctly only the defense.

i think it was a combination of JP who looked light years ahead than carr and L.evans and you cant forget Kubiak also i blame him more than carr for the loss he is the i-diot that called a pass play on third down david just did the best he could which you and know its not enough:stirpot:

Personally, I think the Chronic coverage in general tends to be too high when the team wins, and too low when they don't.

My mini-rant:

link: "Texans post game: I feel like using choice profanities"

In relevant part:

Once again, I find myself quoting the great poet, David St. Hubbins in saying, "It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

Last week, it's all good for the team when they go for it at 4th-and-inches against Jacksonville even though that is an unconventional call. This week, sports radio callers whip out the Aggies-are-stupid card to explain Kubiak allowing the 3rd and 2 call.

Exactly!! You make it on that play your a genius, you don't make it, your an fool who needs to be coaching pop-warner or flag football.

It is wisdom such as this that gets many coaches fired for absolutely no reason. I have seen many times someone calling for Kubiak to be fired, if not here then on the espn msg board. This makes me scratch my head and wonder what people are thinking, or not thinking.

Great post. The most frustrating part is that for every 1 fan like you, there are 50 that will take everything that dip**** McClain says as gospel truth.. and they will twist it and tell it to 50 other fans.. and before long, you have a bunch of people spouting ignorant garbage on our message board in an attempt to be cool like McClain and bash the hometown team.

The offense played very well.

Since you're striving for objectivity, here's the outcome of the Texans last six drives:

Fumble
Punt
Punt
Punt
Punt
Punt

And here's the outcome of their first two drives:

Interception
Punt

And here's the outcome of drives 3 and 4 which accounted for 40% of their total offensive yardage output and 100% of their offensive point output for the day:

Touchdown
Touchdown

The Texans offense scored 0 points and gained only 108 yards in the second half.

I was not striving for objectivity. I was striving for a coherant reporter who wasn't flumoxed on the sidelines.

The Texan offense moved the ball AT TIMES as well and as efficiently as they have all season. I mentioned the fact that they need to find a way to make a first down or two late in the game. I have also detailed on the boards here the major problems in doing that with the personel groupings we have out on the field.

The point of the post was that McClain was out of line with his behavior. That was all I was pointing out.

Agree with the 'at times' qualifier but the offense was non-existent for the most part in the second half - except for 'maybe' their best drive of the half where they gained 50 but still had to punt.

But c'mon John...be a little more objective before you go on one of your childish rants.

I was not striving for objectivity.

Someone might point out that we DID play well on offense. We moved the ball extremely effectively and Carr showed excellent decision making and showed excellent composure and movement in the pocket.

The offense stunk. When can only 2 TD's against a very average defense and can't pick up a first down in the 4th quarter you stink. And Carr's decision-making wasn't all that great. He easily could have had 4 interceptions. He was also dumping the ball off when there were better options downfield. Has he thrown a single pass down the middle of the field all year?

All in all, this was a team effort. Every person on that field stunk it up against a bad Buffalo team. Another 2 steps back for the organization.

I could care less about what McClain rants about and I don't listen to him anyways so it wouldn't really matter. I believe the offense looked good. On 3 drives. The rest of the game they looked bad. One first down on that last drive and the game is over. The offensive drives in the 2nd half were:

4 and out. PUNT
8 play drive into Buffalo territory and they fail to score. PUNT
3 and out. PUNT
6 play drive. PUNT
3 and out. PUNT

The offense failed to score a point in the 2nd half. They really only threatened once. If the Texans defense held Buffalo's offense to that type of 2nd half output everyone would be praising how well they did. A good offense picks it up when needed and performs more consistently.

THe record means nothing since it didn't help the team to a win. Did it contribute to the loss? I doubt it. The Texans still appear to play games with the intention of not losing them.

John McCLain is a COMPLETE *****, one minute he is on the Texans band wagon and jumps off when they are not doing that good and second guesses everthing that orginization does (hummm those who cant write??)......... oh wait that also describes half the Texans fans!!!!

If I havent said it before he is a COMPLETE *****!!!!!!!!

I cant believe he has won awards for his writing !!!! and when is the Chron going to act like a paper for the Texans and take that crap off compairing Reggie "Im a joke, who cant run inside the tackles and found out de's can catch me" Bush , Mario Williams and Vince " You where never coming to houston, so all you lame UT alum get over it " Young

You can't throw it into the middle of the field when no on eis there my friend.

When AJ is running fade, fade, fade, fade, fade and on the other side you have Moulds running ten yard hooks, you are kinda limited to your down the middle strikes.

When you have tight ends trying to stretch the middle of the field, you don't complete too many balls across the middle.

When you run play action on every pass play with a tailback and a fullback in the backfield, you don't get to hit too many across the middle.

When Cook is spilling into the flats and the tailback is hooking up at three yards, you can't get to the middle.

I'm fed up with the absolute ignorance of the fans on this message board as to the nuances of the game. I am even more fed up with an offensive system that allows Jamel Cook to be on the field 75% of the time when he is 90% of the problem. I am SO sick and tired of seeing two tights and a fullback on the field when we are in third and long.

Carr went through his progressions extremely well Sunday despite what you pull out of your rear. His footwork was better and his decisionmaking was better. I pointed out the two interceptions that he made mistakes on. The other two that were nearly picked off have something in common if you are an astute observer....ALL FOUR WERE TO AJ! ALL FOUR WERE SIDELINE FADE ROUTES! How many times do you draw that play up in the dirt? Marvin Harrison ran ONE go route against Dallas and Peyton Manning hit him. Do you honestly think the Colts run ten go routes with Harrison where he is the primary receiver? WE DO!

unless you have coaches tape you can't see it on TV. If you are in Pennsylvania I don't know how you can see the route progressions. Ignorance works both ways. Coaches call what the players can do. So far it's five years of truncated playbook for Carr.

I agree with McClain on the above.

Both Mc***** and Injustice are Vince Young marks.

Agreed. McClain is only about moving papers. The more he stirrs the pot, the more papers the barnicle sales. Always read him with that in mind. Now that Bud's not in town anymore, he needs a whipping post for fodder in his collumns. He is what he is. I stoped reading Justice and LaRazza long ago. They're baseball/scoccer guys who drew the short straw. Noticed last few weeks, there's been a couple of days with no NFL coverage in the barnicle ? Guess McClain had some pressing business in Tennessee or Hollywood. McClain has been Hollywood John for a while now.

Draft a premer Ol this year early in day one and expand the play book. As you wrote in another thread, there is a cause and effect at play here. Four years of getting pummled tends to lead you to be a bit skidish. what are we up to now, 250 sacks and counting ? Y'all maybe correct about DC...just saying don't say out of the side of your mouth that he's gotten support from this orgnazation. He hasn't.

I can see a quarterback going through his reads. I have coached and played on a college level. Kubiak mentioed a couple of weeks ago that he was frustrated with Carr and his footwork in the pocket and how he was not moving his feet to get himself in a proper throwing position when he makes his read. He wasn't. For instance, he would look across the middle and then turn his head to the outside and wing it out there without moving his hips to the throw. You don't have to be in Reliant Stadium to see this, nor do you need game film. I see it when I watch it and I also tape the games. I use the film with my own team to show them how to do things and how NOT do things. Pros make mistakes too!

When AJ is doing a go route and you have two backs in the backfield, that is three people who are not going across the middle. So that leaves us with two eligible receivers. When you have a formation that has two tight ends on the field, you are not going to be much of threat in the middle of the field. When Eric Moulds is on the field, he rarely runs deep post routes and digs. He is primarily a possession guy who they do not stretch the field with much at all.

The ball that Carr threw to Moulds on the corner route was one of the first corner routes that I have ever seen the Texans run. He threw that ball extremely well and it was a great route run by Moulds. Don't tell me Carr can't throw that ball and he can't throw the ball in the middle. We don't run the routes. Meanwhile, Walter stands on the sidelines 80% of the time. AJ does not run dig, he does not run post. Before this year, AJ never ran many routes where he dragged across the field. I haven't seen AJ run too many double move corners at all since he has been here. I have seen him run a fade or a go route plenty of times. I have seen that pass picked off more than a few times as well.

Finally, you don't need a game film to see two tight ends and Jamel Cook on the field. This is the year 2006 where offenses are opening up. Where it is difficult for defenses to defend the pass with so many rules tilted to benefit the offense. We have an archaic offensive scheme that hurts. We have a fullback who is not a NFL player having too much of role in the football game time and time and time again.

My turn to rant, but I don't write for the Houston Chronicle or appear on TV!

So McClain is human. idonno:

Put a mic in front of me after the game, and you would've heard "beeep beep beeeeeeep beep beep!! beep stupid beep beeeep what the beep was he beeeep thinking?! And beeep beep beeeeep!!"

Hey, it was a tough loss to watch as a fan. We gave it away, even though we didn't necessarily deserve to win. Expect major overhaul to continue with this team until Kubiak finds the pieces to make it work successfully.

I was thinking the same thing about the mic when I was reading this thread. I think it is very honest of John Mclain to just go ahead and say whatever is on his mind at the time, facts be da**ed. Actually, it tells me he is a fan, as well as a sportswriter.

On your other paragraph - Dunta sure as **** deserved to win. Moulds, too - if they would have tried to hit him in the second half. Gado and Lundy busted their tails, too.

No DeMeco, no Owen Daniels. NO SAFETIES! This is on the verge of becoming a major rant, so I am stopping now.

I would say he is actually sub-human and a waist of the world's oxygen supply. :hunter:

Yeah but at least he's not a homophone abuser.

Well you certainly have me on that one AJ...guilty as charged and thanks for the spelling correction on "waste".

And you are right of course again that McClain would never "abuse a homophone"... his abuse of the english language just takes on other forms. :twocents:
