O - Line and Mario

I won't get to see the game until tomorrow on NFL Network. I live in Cowboy country.

How did the O-Line look in pass protection?? I see by the stats that Carr ran a lot. Were these scramble runs because the protection broke down or what?

How did Mario look??
 
They were planned rollouts. Carr was not even remotely threatened when he was in there but he did manage to get a little jittery without even being hit so while we didn't have to watch the impacts we got the same general effect.

I think it was Carr trying too hard but that's just my first impression.
 
Honestly the O-Line has NEVER looked better... I was very impressed even with some of them where the QB were sitting in the pocket they had time to pass.. I think they looked great..

As for MW - yes he's only a Rookie and they are already treating him like a 2 headed monster coming their way... They had him doubled every time..
 
Honestly, if other teams spend so much attention that we can get five sacks a game from the other DLs and LBs then he has done his job.
 
I just rewound every play on defense for the first quarter just to examine Mario. He had a great push on every single play. There was one play with about 47 seconds left in the first quarter that he ragdolled their LT. From what I could see his problem may end up being that he can get upfield so fast that the plays might get past him as he's going. He WILL put up some good numbers this year but I'm really really impressed with Spencer. That man is a wall in the running game!
 
To me he looked just like they said he would. He took up the extra blockers and made a good push. Trust me, I have Tivo and I slo-moed the plays. I was plain surprized that they moved him around so much. He followed the TE and came in on 3rd and long as a DT. With a whole four quarters this man will knock down some QBs.

bootlegs with a mile of open space. Home, Home on the Range. I thought the pass protection was good. There was some great coverage. L. Sanders had a great deflection on a potential long ball....ended up being a drive killer I think.

Run coverage was porous. The oline was beating our dline creating holes. It's early so it's probably going to get fixed quickly.

I agree with that, Carr needs to settle down. I expect Kubes will give him one or two things to think about....:dangit:

I think it was just first game jitters under Kubiak's new scheme. At least I hope it was. Carr didn't look bad though. But he didn't look good either. He was average, but he did gain yards by running the ball. That's a plus.
 
Let me say this about Mario...................

He did a turn good job tonight, he stayed in his rush lanes, stayed at home with his outside arm free forcing the ball back inside to the LB and DTs.
Played with good pad level and looked like he fit right in.

It IS VERY HARD to get sacks when a team dominates the run like the Chiefs so just cause he did not have any sacks says nothing, I garuntee if the guy had all game he would have got him self maybe a couple of sacks.

He did good, he did his job.
 
Wand held his own tonight and did a pretty good job. The coaching makes a big difference. The only thing that bothered me is that sometimes he gave up to much room. Spencer was very impressive and very BIG. That guy has to be the heaviest player on the team and is a human Wall. He's diffently going to be pushing for the starting postion if Wand doesn't continue to improve, but it wa clear to see the improvement of the entire O-line with Sherman coaching it now. One more thing. Weary was dominating tonight and McKinney should be very worried about loosing his starting role. Winston did a fine job as well, so the same can be said of Weigert. I was very impressed!

Thats what I saw as well, he gives up too much room sometimes.

Like on the 3rd and 7 in the second series were Carr hit Moulds on the crossing route, David almost got sacked, Wand was pushed back all the way to Carr.....................?
 
I just got back from the game and I really liked what I saw. In the first quarter they ran at Mario and he was creating havoc. L.J. had to turn inside and was taken down by Demeco. I didn't like the fact that they moved him around so much, because I couldn't really focus on him, but he did get great push into the line I also saw one play where had he not been cut block he would have gotten the QB. The o-line was totally unrecognizeable, when they ran bootlegs it was like that side of the field was almost bare. I'm really pumped about the upcoming season.

That is something I think Sherman will se as well if we can. As long as wand continues to get better throughout the season then I'm happy. Sheramn, so far, has done a great job with the entire O-line and has done something here that I thought wasn't possible at all possible. Keep up the great work Sherman!

T. Johnson did a pretty good jod but i can't really gage that against the level of competion he was facing in the 2nd string level.
 
I was just watchin sportscenter and they showed about 5 plays of Mario Williams and he did not look good at all except when he made Kyle Turly jump. Now did they just show 5 bad plays and did not show any good plays that he made? Just wondering.
 
I liked all that I saw. Pretty impressive for ANY teams 1st preseason game. I think this will be a great season for us.

Yeah he didn't look too good IMO. He wasn't able to get seperation and he let the LT lock him up. He was still pushing guys off the ball, but there's no getting to the QB when the LT has you locked up like that. He needs to start developing some pass rushing moves, cause it looked to me like he was just trying to manhandle they guy, which obviously wasn't working. Even on passing downs the whole line looked like they were having trouble getting to the QB with just their front 4.

He's still a huge strong guy who can obviuosly blow people off the line; he just needs to develope some skills, cause the physicality is already there. It would have been better if we put him in the middle tonight though. :) But like many people have said, the KC line is really good. Before that guy retired (forgot his name) they've always been the best in the league IMO. But what does that say about us? That our projections of being a top 5 Dline have been grossly exagerated thus far.

I too live in land of sad sad people, but caught bits of it on NFL Network's "No Huddle". Mostly looked like designed plays for him to rollout, and if open field make some yards. Offensive line looked good and made a lot of holes, I know most of highlights show Wali Lundy strolling into end zone. But am betting it was the quality of blocking he got, the announcers even mentioned how Seth got ashoulder into dfender moving him out of way....WOOOOOOO.

Didn't see much of Mario but he seemed to be shifting around and that gave offensive line of Chiefs problems as they had to account for him. I hear his mom was upset at a lot of double teams, guess he will have to get used to that but boy did it free up rest of defensive line 5 sacks (even Travis Johnson got 1):homer:

Yea, he played a mediocre game. From what I saw in person, he is getting used to both ends (he was shifting around on every other play, literally).

He was double and triple teamed a couple times during the course of the first few series. On one play I saw him being triple teamed, with one hand on each of two defenders, and pushed back by the third. He is more powerful than ESPN will let on....

Anyways, the thing that he did that was important is he changed the course of a few plays. On one play, Larry Johnson took a handoff to the left and had to change course because Mario had cut a block to the left. He was stopped soon after, he only got a couple yards. That is what I am looking forward to... seeing him loose in the backfield. It doesn't matter how many sacks he gets, so long as he is creating pressure and making the offense adjust.

All in all we really exploited the Chiefs tonight. I can't believe how well the boys performed!
 
Mario will have to get used to the NFL, but he has certainly got some moves. Despite the controversy, despite the woulda-shoulda-couldas, you guys got a beast. Enjoy

Mario didn't have an eye-popping performance, but he did have an affect on the KC Oline. Anytime a rookie demands double and triple teams, that shows how much respect THEY have for him...and that will ultimately lead to freeing up other defenders to make plays.

I didn't see him blowing up the line, breaking to the QB and "making plays" but he was solid....but I do expect to see that as he and the rest of the defense improves throught the remainder of the preseason. All in all; good performance for only a quarter of play.

Sorry, but you guys make it sound like the KC Oline brought out the kitchen sink to stop Mario. Yeah, the tackles got some occasional help on him, but that's what an Oline does. The fact is, Mario did not dominate tonight on any level. Period.

But like I said, it's obvious that he's huge and strong at the line, and just needs time to develope. But make no mistake, Mario didn't do anything tonight that would make you think he was even a top 10 DE. I would expect him to have to go through some growing pains and I have no idea how long it's going to take for him to prove hiimself worthy of the 2006 #1 pick.

the other DE and our 2 DTs.

i also think payne might move up the depth chart and take robaires place. as for the other DEs, i noticed babin more than peek but i really wasnt watching them that closely
 
A few of the times I saw Mario doubled, the first blocker engaged him, then a second blocker chipped him to slow down his initial push, then the second blocker moved off to look for someone else to engage.
I saw this happen a few times on passing downs where Mario lined up inside, and the center was the initial blocker and a gaurd doubled him for a second or two.
I like the concept of lining him up all over the DLine, but I think by the time the regular season comes around, he will be predominantly(sp?) on the outside in passing situations.

Thanks for the reply. I wish I could predict that Mario will take down Peyton 8 times this season, but I can't. I do think that you guy's will be happy with the pick in the end.

That play did get me a little worried, but all Carr had to do was step into the pocket and make the throw.

Wand was getting bullrushed. You only have two options in that situation; 1. stop the DE in his tracks, or 2. Use the DE's momentum to push him around the pocket.

Wand did the later and it works if the middle of the O-line isn't collasping into the pocket.
 
I think Spencer could slide into that position still, he had a terrifc showing in the run game and well no sacks from the blind side says it all...

Excellant observation, showing football knowledge. I don't know Sherman's emphasis in blocking technique, but I doubt Wand will be down graded much, if any, for this play. It was an excellant job of riding the DE out of the play.

If the worst play any offensive lineman makes in pass blocking this year is "he got pushed back to the QB, who still made the pass" I think we'll be pretty happy.

KC rushing held to about 100 yards.

It's not about an individual, it'a about the TEAM.

For whatever reason, they got it done last night. :redtowel:

Spencer is awesome. I was there and now watching again. He holds his block forever and seems to not tire. Poor Mario was tapping his helmet at one point to come out. He was overhyped and used up his adrenaline.

Watch that Lundy run again. Nice crease running.
 
I wasn't paying much attention to the KC players - did Spencer ever go up against the first string defense?
 
Okay the ESPN people are talking about how bad Mario did in his first preseason game. I don't have the stats or anything, but what about Julius Peppers first preseason game. I did find this though, and it sounds just like how Mario did.


The long drive was the first opportunity for Carolina fans to see Julius Peppers, the second overall pick, try to apply some pressure to Matthews -- an area the Panthers need help in.

But the defensive end out of North Carolina was handled easily by 306-pound tackle Jon Jansen, and Peppers got winded late in the march and had to come out.

Some plays yes. but others no. With a little bit of time he will get better.

It's almost as if rookies are new to the level of play in the NFL and need time to learn and adjust.

I just find it hilarious that Reggie Bush is still the best RB to ever touch the earth while evidently both MW and VY are busts.
