Gil Brandt article on Texans camp

Good article. And we finally get some credit for drafting Mario from someone other than Michael Smith.

He thinks Mario was the better pick than Bush, and that the Texans have an outside shot at making the playoffs.
 
I have a feeling unless we have an absolute meltdown in the Philly game, Alot of people are gonna change their tune about us.

There is nothing in his statement I can argue with. I also feel they have a slim chance of getting into the 9-7 range, and that could be enough to at least sniff a wildcard spot. It's not exactly going out on a limb suggesting they have a slight chance of making the playoffs. The safer bet is they will win 6 or 7, and climb a few rungs up the ladder, and next year we should see a real contender. Nice piece and thanks for sharing. :)
 
It feels good to finally start reading some positive spins about the Texans (other than local sources).

I'd be extremely happy to have a winning record this season, much less a shot at the playoffs. While I think we have a lot of potential, I'm still grounded by the fact that we have not addressed all of our pressing needs. It'll take time to build a winning franchise, but there is always the foundation (which is this year for us).

Brandt is generally solid - this article is no different.

Obviously we have a huge hole at RB without Dom Davis -- can Morency step it up into the starting roll if DD is in and out of the line up all season? Can he take over all together? Many questions about the RB position, but the defense and WR core look very solid.
 
I don't know about anybody else, but I sent it to EVERY Dallas Cowboys fan I know....LOL I especially highlighted where he said we had a chance to make playoffs and how we will suprise some people. I can hear the groans already (especially since he is so revered by Cowboys fans).:fans: :texans: :gotexans1
 
Depending on the roster cuts and who emreges as the return guy, I would throw special teams into the strengths of the teams also. The kickers are solid and the talent is there as well.

I am a little surprised no one is talking about the leadership voids of the Texans division rivals. More wins should be possible just with the absense of SMcNair, EJames, and JSmith.

Of course, at the end of the year when Mario is crowned Defensive rookie of the year and the Texans are heading to their first ever playoff spot EVERY national sportswriter will be saying they knew all along the Texans were smart to pick Mario over Bush.
 
I'd say this is easily one of the most encouraging evaluations of the Texans
and their prospects for the year because of the articles author - Gil Brandt.
This is anything but spin from a Texans insider because Brandt is independant, knowledgeable, established, and highly regarded by most who follow the NFL.

Texan fans deserve better than to have this label cast upon our team. Last year was tough. We are all excited about perhaps having our first winning season and what do they do? If we turn this thing around and start to win some games then we will be refered to as not the Houston Texans that we all want to be proud of, but Denver South. If we continue to lose then Im sure that we will still be refered to as the Houston Texans. Just disrespectful as far as im concerned. But hey, maybe it's just me.

I read somewhere before, I believe Houston Chronicle, where Gibrandt said that he liked the Mario pick only because of the offensive system we have now.

I believe he said something like: Remember I like the Mario pick only because of the offensive system.

Has this guy been positive on the Texans all along and I missed it? Either way, I sure hope he is right.:francis:

Get a grip. Philly is gonna pound us with the rush. I expect us to have the worst rushing defense after the first game. With or with out Westbrook, there gonna kill us running the ball. Book it. Pray for Philly injuries on the o-line this preseaon.
Their o-line is pile driving people.

Philly has pile driven people to the tune of 2.8 ypc over the two pre-season games they have played. Somehow Philly and pounded by the rush don't seem to fit in the same sentence.

(Aug. 9, 2006) -- Houston was one of the latest stops on my training-camp tour, and I must say I liked what I saw from this squad. The team may have finished 2-14 last season and then switched coaches, but the Texans have been practicing with a bounce in their step. Under new head coach Gary Kubiak, they are exuding confidence. And that attitude can't be underestimated.

There was a time when Denver was known as "Dallas North," because Broncos head coach Dan Reeves, a former Cowboy player and coach, brought a lot of Cowboys in. Well, Houston has now become "Denver South." Kubiak, the former offensive coordinator in Denver, has brought along Troy Calhoun (Houston's new offensive coordinator), Rick Smith (general manager) and various others.

The Texans are hoping top pick Mario Williams will have an immediate impact on defense.
The atmosphere in Houston is completely different. This is a team that could surprise some people. The Texans have some good young players. With first overall draft pick Mario Williams at defensive end and a good young linebacker in second-round pick DeMeco Ryans, the defense should be improved.

Kubiak is really working hard on David Carr. The former first-round quarterback did throw more touchdowns than interceptions last year (14-11), and he should only get better with Kubiak's guidance. He could have his best season as a pro.

Receiver Eric Moulds, acquired in a trade with Buffalo, has brought a lot to this team. He'll open things up for Andre Johnson, as teams will not be able to focus all their attention on Johnson. Moulds is looking great in practice and Johnson has been shadowing him all over camp.

from the link.. that is something we had in 2002-2004..players believed into the Capers system and eventhough we knew we weren't as deep or talented as some of the teams we played..we played with a fire. we believed into the 4 year system that we all came to know.

2005..IMO ..we lost that fire and didn't believe in the system anymore. That is why I don't see us winning 2 games or even 4 games this year.. I am thinking atleast 7

In what world did the Eagles become even a running team, much less a power run. I wouldn't care if Westbrook was healthy and getting 6 ypc. Donovan McNabb is still the focal point of that team. And more importantly, the head coach, Reid's philosophy.

Their O-Line has looked decent but that's about it, IMO. Against Cleveland and the Raiders so far, too early to say more. We are going to have a top 5 D-Line and our DL is going to better at stopping the run more so than the pass, especially if the secondary is a bit of question mark, which I think is a weak point.

If anything I would worry about their OL holding off our DL and passing for alot of yards......but power running, that's least of my concern. I am hoping their lack of a number 1 reciever will keep them from moving the chains. They also have a solid defense, that is not to be overlooked.
