It's training camp, and it's hot

I just heard on the local TV news that Spencer and Moulds left the field due to heat exhaustion.

Remember - this is a news report so take it FWIW. No need to panic yet - I'm sure they can recover.

Heart or Heat. No kidding it is hot. My church youth softball team won a tournament last week in 102 degree heat.

Oops. Thanks - I corrected it. I'll leave a little tip for you in your jar.

I ran 8 1/2 miles this morning at 5:00 and was soaked in sweat after the first couple, and that was with no sun.

8 1/2 miles? I would die, if not from exhaustion then boredom. Car not working? :)

Am I the only one who thinks this summer has actually been fairly pleasant? I remember last year being a scorcher, and so far, it's just seemed cooler out to me. Don't know if I am just sort of used to it now or what.

Moulds left really early. I saw Spencer for about half the practice but didn't notice him leave. They weren't the only players showing signs of heat "frustration."

That's scary, especially for Spencer since he's one of the larger (maybe the largest ?) players on the roster. Remember Korey Stringer ?
And Spencer played ball at Pitt and is from NY state. I doubt that he's ever been exposed to this kinda heat we have here in Houston.

Good thing Moulds won't have to participate in afternoon practices every day. I would like to see him through the mornings though.

Oh well. Practice session one is in the books.

Those were my "instant thoughts", but it is just day one. Everything will be fine.

Maybe it was just me but it seemed hotter out there at 9:30 a.m. than it does at 7:30 p.m. RH is typically a lot higher in the morning anyway, and with all the rain recently it was thick. It was pretty brutal for a while then a little breeze kicked up from the south that helped a bit. That and the defense wearing deep steel blue. There were a lot of helmets coming off and players running water over their heads and into their helmets. ...while Kubiak was wearing his patented long sleeve sweatshirt.

I didn't see Moulds leave but Spencer walked off slowly to the bubble with a trainer in tow about two-thirds thru practice. Frankly I am glad to hear it was heat rather than a turned ankle or something.

Buchanon had to have a two taped mid practice--hopefully preventative.

Have to agree--maybe because it was getting hotter instead of cooling off. Thank goodness for the breeze right at the end.

It's the angle of the sun, and remember its really 10:30 when you back out
daylignt ST. That's virtually mid day as far as sun angle goes, and those are the most penetrating sun rays. 7:30 PM makes for a relatively beneign sun in the summertime compared to mid day.

Actually I was going to run 11 miles, but my route takes me close to my house after 8.5 and I have to run away from home and back to get in the 11. It was so humid I didn't have the mental fortitude to continue - and I didn't want to overdo it and have my own heat problems either. I was completely soaked, like I had jumped in a pool before starting my run. At the end my feet were squishing with every step I took since my shoes were filled with tepid pools of my own sweat.

He's the man.

Well, it is just that it is getting hotter faster this year. Normally this heat isn't until mid Aug.

Not sure why I typed 7:30, I meant 3:30. Dom had some practices over the past years in the mid-afternoons and that's what I was comparing it to.

I do know why I typed 7:30 ... I was just talking to someone else about evening practices. The only thing bad about 7:30 practices - for the fans - is staring into the setting sun.

For some reason the heat didn't seem as bad to me as the evening practices. Maybe it was because the sun was at our backs and we did have a little breeze. Kubiak is the MAN!!!! Didn't look like the heat even fazed him at all, even with that sweat shirt on.

Aj!! Missed seeing ya!

What is the reasoning for practicing outside in this heat instead of practicing in that domed practice facility they have? I don't get it... :francis:

Gotta play outside man, plus easier to get used to the heat and in shape if you are in it. BTW AJ where were you sitting or stationed man so I know if I saw you or not.

It gives us an overwhelming advantage when a northern team - say Pittsburgh - comes down to play us early in the year. We can leave the roof open and dominate them through better conditioning.

For spencer, with his weight, and never having been exposed to this Gulf coast summer weather, I can kinda cut him some slack, meaning he was probably in pretty good shape for Pennsylvania summers. Now he will really start to get down to the 230, or so, that Kubiak wants. He will be fine, IMO.
Moulds is just showing his age a little. Being from Mississippi though, he should be more used to this weather we have. I'm sure both players will fill up on fluids for the next practice. :shades:

So what's the deal with Kubiak then..is he trying to show the players how tough he is by wearing that pullover in July?

That is just what coaches do. He takes it off when he runs after practice. Man likes to stay in shape anything wrong with that.

Hey Mods,

Call me obsessive, but that space I omitted between the comma and the "and" in the title of this thread is killing me.
:bomb:

I was on the track between the fields. Spent a lot of the first half watching the DLs in the back corner and the OL/DL hangman drills on the middle field. The rest of the time I was standing next to the metal fence next to the JLG camera tower on about the 35 of the main practice field. White guy late 40's wearing a white Texans polo with blue jean shorts. That would be my standard uniform these days.

I'll be in the stands tomorrow and Sunday, hopefully standing on the top row near mid-field.

We are about to unfold another feature that ties in to the main page and will link directly to it's own forum we will host here in place of the draft forums. Players and coaches will be involved, so you guys will get a bit more interaction this season when it comes to houstontexans.com. Consider that some inside scoop...I'll let them annouce it officially on the main page.

I've asked this question about that game but have never seen an answer: Why don't the Texans have cooled benches like Pittsburgh brought with them?

Our dudes ended up sitting in the sun on aluminum benches!

Dom didn't script that a year in advance and had no place in his schedule to deviate and bring them in. They were worked in for the 2008 campain though....but alas, those plans are trashed now.

Very nice Vinny. Thanks for the scoop.

As long as you execute the plays, weather makes no difference. :hmmm: hmmm...a "Caperism"

I saw a special that showed a pill that the player swallows....That pill then sends internal body temperature alerts to the trainers. Thus allowing the trainers to monitor all of the players temps and can take care of them before a problem occurs.

wow time flies ..... when I was young and playing football we took salt tablets ......

Sprained ankle? Take a salt tablet.
Helmet not working, take the Wall Test.
"Whats the Wall Test?"
Put on your helment and run head first into the wall, if you can see afterwards, your helmets fine.
*After wall test*
Cuncussion? Take a salt tablet.

That's cool! Can you imagine the gear players will be wearing in 20 years?

It should be up late tonight or tomorrow.

The new feature will include VOF, a player and cheerleader from what I understand - with a Aug 10 roll out. I don't think that's top secret or anything.

I hate you guys. I FINALLY make it back from France and now I'm stuck in Pascagoula, Ms. using dial up. One of these days, I'm gonna make it to a Texans practice!!!!! Thanks for all the info you guys put on here. It really helps a road dog, like myself, keep up with my team. Beats the **** out of the crap McLame put on his blog. I want to know about the team NOT reporters and players turned reporters. Y'all rock.
