Ideal Offseason Scenario

It would be cool to end up with the guy we originally targeted and JJ playing together.

Just as fyi, PP has 2 years left on his contract, would leave almost no dead money ($1.6 mil) and would have cap hits of $11.25 & $12.3. A bargain for a top corner in his 28 year old prime. Way prefer to see something happen with him than Bell.

No doubt

I don’t really see a trade happening because of what the potential price could be(few draft picks)
Also I would still go after Bell. We can’t go back out there with Lamar as our starting RB. I never thought foreman was that good anyways and blue is blue. We have so many holes on O-line and corner that’s really gonna be majority of our picks in the draft so no room to get a RB.

I've been a big proponent of signing Bell but if I had to choose between Bell or Peterson, I'm going to trade and use that financial slot for PP. I could draft a RB to answer that need. Snell, Kentucky could be the type of runner that fits OB's system. Snell and Foreman would be interesting for next season.

That probably would cost us atleast our 1st round pick, and he's 28 to 29 years old. I dunno, wonder about the wisdom of that trade from the Texans perspective considering everything ?

If the Cardinals demanded a First this year then probably not....

See I agree with this however with Benny I see him not making it past 3rd round. We aren’t in the position right now to take a RB that early with no many holes on the OL. Definitely if we made a trade for Pat P which means we are probably out a pick or two.

Re-Signed Texans Free Agents
1. Kareem Jackson - DB - I am concerned he has had his best season in a contract year but he has been a swiss army knife for our secondary. 3 years/$21 M
2. Tyrann Mathieu - S - Fit has been perfect. Along with Jackson has helped cover for our poor CB play. 4 years/$30 M
3. JD Clowney - OLB - His knee gives me pause and I would likely tag him. 1 year/$15 M
4. Brandon Dunn - NT - Like him as a depth piece along the Dline. 2 years/$5 M
5. Christian Covington - DE - Perfect example of homegrown talent that we have developed and need to keep. 3 years/$10 M
6. Ka'imi Fairbairn - K - Solid kicker. 3 years/$10 M

Released: Seantrel Henderson, Kayvon Webster, Angelo Blackson, Joe Webb, Shareece Wright, Brian Peters, Brandon Weeden, Alfred Blue, Kendall Lamm, Brennan Scarlett, Deandre Carter

Signed NFL Free Agents
1. Donovan Smith - LT - Former PSU player for Bill O'Brien, Smith has been an iron man at LT for the Bucs since being drafted in 2015. He has improved his PFF grade each season that he has been in the NFL. 5 years/$50 M
2. Darqueze Dennard - CB - Veteran CB who should thrive in our defense. 3 years/$35 M
3. Jordan Matthews - WR - Veteran WR who can play on the outside or in the slot. 2 years/$4 M
4. Brett Hundley - QB - Insurance so that the season doesn't turn on Deshaun's ACL. 3 years/$10 M

Draft
1: David Edwards - OT/Wisconsin - Road grading RT with athleticism to hold up in pass pro.
2: Michael Jackson - CB/Miami - Physical corner who supports against the run
2: Andy Isabella - WR/UMass - Weapon out of the slot. Can be insurance for either Coutee or Fuller (as a deep threat)
3: Jalen Jelks - OLB/Oregon - Will likely need a year to transition to OLB (future replacement for Mercilus or Clowney). Special teamer until then.
5: Renell Wren - DL/ASU - Depth on the DL. Big body with plus athleticism.
6: Tavien Feaster - RB/Clemson - Blue replacement.
7: BPA/Special teams depth

I still like my original ideal offseason. I think it addresses many of our problems on both sides of the ball. I have, however, been moving toward Trent Brown over Donovan Smith as the free agent OT.

That’s awesome, maybe I read that management wants him to retire there. I’d love this guy on our team.

Agreed, You would probably have to trade a 1st plus a 2nd and Mercilus. As much as I want them to fix the OL I would do this trade and try to sign Donovan Smith in FA and draft another OT with the other 2nd rd pick.

I'd prefer to use the 3rd on a CB that could help immediately. And the 5th on OL
Use the 6th on DL. We can get an UDFA to replace Blue

IDK, vets have been cheap lately in the trade market unless it's a pro bowl talent, and this past year Peterson didn't make it.

I wonder if the Cardinals would have any interest in a Clowney for Peterson deal?

I think that's highly doubtful, they are already paying Chandler Jones premium pass rusher money, they have Peterson on a very friendly contract with how the market currently is. I don't see them trading a player of his caliber on that contract for another pass rusher they would have to pay big money to, especially with them having the first pick, so they can land a premier pass rusher on the cheap

I'd be happy with picking any player in the 3rd, mainly because we don't have a 3rd lol

Since this is fantasy island, I'll either have RAC start playing assignment football on the DL with our current guys, or trade JJ and JD and with the capital netted, get an interior Dlineman that can push the pocket and have Mercilus, Ejiafor (bring in another rotational DE) and have them all play assignment football. We'll have fewer sacks but be playing sounder football. Teams starting baiting JJ and JD into backside pursuit and simply ran at their vacated spot or bootlegged that way. Time to get back to fundamental football on defense. And yes, lets get a cb or two that can play press coverage.

Exactly, that's why Clowney would be more valuable as a tag and trade commodity. The picks he would return, could give the Texans the necessary picks to combine with a package surrounding Mercilus (actually like this option that someone else mentioned) that allows the Texans to maintain their RD1 and RD2 positions. Not to mention, there should still be a pick inside the first 4 rounds left to work with.

Before anyone screams that I've essentially given Clowney and Mercilus for Peterson and a pick or 2....Peterson brings more to this defense's overall play in 2019 than either Clowney or Mercilus would, IMHO.

Would rather trade Mercilous.

Badger is over hyped. He’s ok and I would sign him as long as it’s a fair market deal that pays him as a slightly above average safety which is what he is. Would rather go after Earl Thomas.

Jackson is on the wrong side of thirty. Only resign if it’s a short reasonable contract. He played great this year but I wouldn’t pay him

Go after Jake Mathews and Zack Martin and Matt Paradis in FA. Tell Mathews to come home to his family. Tell Martin to come play with his brother. Go BPA in draft.

Again you are missing the Why would Arizona do it? Just because the Texans are fine making it work, doesn't mean the cardinals are. They have Chandler Jones, and will probably draft another great pass rusher in Bosa. They have 0 need to trade a top 3 corner for an additional pass rusher

We finished 18th in the league with 43 sacks this year, we are already not good at rushing the passer why give up 2/3 of our best pass rushers? So we can look like Gruden did this season, and just go "Idk why we can't get pressure on the quarterback, I'm sure it has nothing to do with us giving up our best pass rushers..."

you give up a pass rusher if you can get picks allowing you to draft a starting corner and a starting LT in round one allowing your own regular picks to add to you team needs such as replacement for Clowney if you think Ejiofor not the guy. If this thing breaks just right and it may. 2019 could be draft that is all time best for Texans.

30 is not the demarcation line for DBs that it is for RBs. KJax is almost exactly 1 year older than Thomas. Thomas will also be a lot more expensive.
I get that but over thirty before finally having a breakout year. Not enough history to pay him for his good year. Especially when what he excelled at was more of a strong safety role.

Thomas has years of elite FS play. Of course he’ll cost more but I’m sick of getting gashed to death by good QBs down the field. I want a deep safety with range. Something the badger and Jackson are lacking.

Gruden, is that you??!

The 'why would the other team do it' seems to get ignored a lot in these fantasy ramblings

Our problem in the secondary is not at safety.. Why should we overpay at the safety position when we're bleeding to death at corner? We need at least 2 starting NFL CBs this offseason.

I realize that but there’s literally no cornerbacks available in free agency that are worth paying for. At least none that I’ve seen there is when I’m out to me please. Besides the whole subject was about what to do with the safeties Matthew and Jacson. Rather than paying both of them I would rather go after someone like Earl Thomas. That’s all I’m saying. I think CB on our team is a bigger need than Oline is but that wasn’t part of the discussion

Well we need atleast one corner with top end speed, atleast 4.4 if not in the 4.3 range to keep up with burners like Hilton.

Pickup Claiborne/Brown/Smith in FA and trade for a vet CB like Jenkins and I would be very happy.

Then nail the draft with Cajuste/J. Love and the team will look alot better.

Just gotta spend the $$$$ they've got the cap space.
