Brees to NO Saints?

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/14064242.htm

As for Brees, an NFL source said New Orleans has stepped forward as the strongest contender for his services. The Saints, Dolphins and Detroit have reportedly been the strongest suitors to date, but the Saints have guaranteed more money than the other two teams.
All three are still considered to be in the running, but the NFL source said the Saints appeared to be the strongest.
''From what I know right now, it's set where he's going, and it's not Miami,'' the source said.

That makes the Saints a wild card in the draft now. They could do just about anything.
Yea, this a big deal because up to now the Saints were the biggest constant
at the top of the Draft because of their perceived strong interest in Leinert. And it has to have an adverse effect upon our top picks value, which would
increase the likelihood of us taking Reggie. Of course were a long ways right now from the Saints taking Brees or any QB in FA.

I think this makes our pick more valuable to the league and puts more emphasis on filling our need if there are no trade partners - Williams and Ferguson. On the surface with Brees and McCallister in tow they will be looking at Ferguson, Hawk or trade down in my opinion. It has gotten messier if the trigger is pulled.

I could see the Saints taking Ferguson with the #2 pick. They would have a dominant line if they did that because they already have a very good RT. But I also could see them go after Mario Williams because they can look to the success that Peppers has had against their foe Michael Vick and you can always use defense.

This makes a trade a lot more dangerous because now you aren't guaranteed anything even to #4 and if you go past 4 you are really risking a lot. If we were targeting Mario or D'Brick we could realistically be put in a situation where Mario and D'Brick are taken 2 and 3. And if we were at 5 we probably wouldn't get Bush either.

In looking at their roster I do not see an immediate need at DE. I would need to look at their contracts, but the DL has been a strength for the Saints, on paper at least.

They need a linebacker in the worst way.

They might entertain trading down themselves if they sign Brees. To me, Hawk can play anywhere, inside or out in in just about any D, so he could be a target. In any case, I also think this would lessen the chance we trade down. And personally, I don't think they have the guts to take Mario Williams at #1 and leave Bush on the board. So, to me it's more likely we go Bush than it ever has been.

Let's just say they did sign Brees. Now they could either want Bush, or still take Leinart and let him groom under Brees like San Diego did with him.

That will happen when :pigfly:

I don't see them doing either. McAlister was just signed to a $60 million dollar contract and they aren't going to sign Drew Brees and then draft Matt Leinart. They are either going to draft Ferguson or Hawk or trade down and pick someone else.

People keep forgetting Brees was playing on a cheap rookie contract when San Diego got Rivers. San Diego never intended to carry two high contract QB's and despite Brees' good play are not going to do so now.

They weren't expecting anything good out of Brees.. he screwed their plan for a little while.

But as been said earlier, if the Saints get Brees, some our #1 all of a sudden got very, very valuable...... there is no garuntee D'Brick, Mario, or any of the top five players being on available past two.... If you were looking to take whichever QB dropped to #3, or #4 you're still in good shape, maybe even at #5.. but if you wanted one of the other guys, you're going to have to come see us....

IMO the first picks value dropped. Because any team that wanted to get a QB no longer has to trade up. Also if we want to trade down and get either Dbrick or super mario there is a very good chance they will both be gone by the fourth or fith pick. Before this happened we would have been garunteed either Dbrick or M williams at the fourth pick. Now we arent garunteed anything.

We can skin this many ways and my no means do I think you are wrong because it can go a multitude of ways if Brees is signed. I hope that we take Mario at #1, but the more I think about this I could see us drafting Bush and trading his rights on draft day ala Eli.

No way if the Saints take a QB in FA. One of the elements that enhanced the
value of our pick was if a team besides the Saints also coveted Leinert, that team knew it would need to move ahead of the Saints to get Leinert. Obviously they still have to talk to us about Bush, but anyone interested in Leinert now will have another option besides us.

Please pass your crystal ball over to me, because these are only trial balloons that are being sent up and my take on the situation changes every five minutes.

I don't see us drafting anyone and then trading their rights. I heard Casserly recently say something like you try to fill major holes through FA and then draft the best player available because rookies are never guaranteed to be anything and you want to fill holes with proven players. To me, this sounds like another cryptic we are drafting Reggie Bush statement. OL and DE may be very important pieces to our team, but as good of prospects as Mario Williams and D'Brickashaw Ferguson are, they aren't guaranteed to be great players. I believe that we will pursue a DE, TE, and OL in FA and then draft Reggie Bush and fill minor holes and build depth through the draft.

We have different opinions. I feel that there is one player that will help a team right away more than any other in Mario Williams, but shares a high ceiling with other prospects - Bush, Ferguson, Young and Hawk.

I still do not understand how you cannot see that it is a possibility when there is such a fresh precedent of it happening. Can you elaborate on that?

For one thing, I remember that the last major time it happened (Eli and Phillip) there were some major contract issues because both agents claimed they wanted to have #1 money. The other reason I don't see it happening is that I don't see anyone in the top 5 wanting to trade to #1 because it is such a deep draft. If someone wants a QB, they will have one of the big 3 because the Saints most likely aren't taking a QB (assuming that they actually sign Brees), if someone wants a RB, they can get LenDale White or DeAngelo Williams.

The Jets are probably going to get Patrick Ramsey so they aren't going to trade up for Leinart any more and they have too many holes to give up a lot to get Reggie Bush. They can get a guy like Mario Williams or D'Brick with their first pick and pick up Laurence Maroney with the pick that they get from the Broncos. Or they can take Brian Calhoun or Joseph Addai in the second round.

The Titans aren't going to trade for Reggie Bush or Matt Leinart because they have just as many holes as we do and they are guaranteed to get one of the big 3 QBs. They are also in need of a LT because they cut Brad Hopkins. So they are in a position to get the future QB of the franchise or the franchise LT if they stay where they are.

The Saints aren't going to trade up if they sign Drew Brees because they will have no use for either Matt Leinart or Reggie Bush (Deuce McAlister has a $60 million contract). They will either trade down or pick D'Brickashaw Ferguson or AJ Hawk if they value him high enough.

The Packers need help everywhere. While they may have a use for Reggie Bush, I've read that they love LenDale White. They also could take Mario Williams if he is available and have a nasty pair of DEs with KGB and Mario Williams.

That is why we aren't going to trade the pick or the player. We are going to stay where we are and draft Reggie Bush unless we have Mario rated as a prospect who is too good to pass up. But with some good DE FAs available and a lot of good DEs available in the draft, I don't see him being rated that high. He is an unbelievable prospect and will most likely be a great NFL player, but I still believe that Reggie Bush is in fact the player you can't pass up in this draft.

I just don't see Reggie dominating when it is -5 and snowing like the bruiser Lendale could.

True dat. I don't think Lendale is their man either at #5 though.

this is very bad news for us if it happens. its limits our options and lessens the value of our pick. why in the hell would brees want to go to NO

It's a head scratcher. Must be the $$$. I thought for sure he was heading to Miami. As to why the Saints would go with Brees, I'm sure Drew will sign for less than Leinart would have if taken at #2,

honestly though NO is a team that doesnt have very good future prospects etc and would have to offer alot more than any1 else

:hmmm:

Sign Will Witherspoon and draft Matt Leinart @ #2

or

Sign Dree Brees and draft A.J. Hawk @ #2

:hmmm:

It's a win-win situation for Saints fans:thumbup

The saints love to draft defensive ends in the first round......Dont be surprised if they take Mario Williams:stirpot:

Not a bad move if the Saints wind up movin' to San Antonio in the near future. Brees is from that area.

I guess west Austin is in the same area as San Antonio.

There is the apparent difference of opinion that we have based off a good analysis of the situation. Initially I was in the trade down camp until about a week ago and then I switched to take Mario at #1. You like Bush, but other NFL teams, per your post, do not see the value in him at #1 since they will not trade up. We need to take the player that makes the biggest impact right out of the gate. Moreover, he helps us at a need position and he comes with possibly the highest ceiling.

Plus it makes more sense for cap planning. Aside from expecting a RB discount, the #1 pick is going to go for $8-9 mil + per year. Here are the updated franchise tag/transition tag numbers for this year:

QB: $8,789,000 / $8,386,000
DE: $8,383,000 / $7,485,000
LB: $7,462,000 / $6,392,000
CB: $7,226,000 / $5,468,000
OL: $6,983,000 / $6,391,000
RB: $6,779,000 / $5,851,000
WR: $6,172,000 / $5,160,000
DT: $5,656,000 / $4,463,000
S: $4,109,000 / $3,592,000
TE: $3,327,000 / $2,718,000
K/P: $2,575,000 / $2,163,000

They went up a little because under the new CBA, players under a franchise tag last year count in the top 5/10 calculation. An $8-9 mil RB is off the scale, but an $8-9 mil DE is just highly paid.

Excellent point. You must be one cup of coffee ahead of me this morning. ;)

If NO gets Breez it would be a VERY smart move for them IMO, assuming his shoulder is good to go.

Looks like Miami is seriously after Brees as well. You'd think he would rather play there.

The Dolphins couldn't wait for San Diego quarterback Drew Brees to come to them on a free-agent visit.

A source said Dolphins coach Nick Saban and General Manager Randy Mueller traveled to Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday morning to meet with Brees, who was scheduled to travel today to New Orleans. A private charter airplane registered to Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga arrived in Birmingham from Fort Lauderdale this morning.

Doesn't sound like the Chargers really want Brees if they will only put up $2 mil in guaranteed money:

Condon said he would not address specifics of his dealings with the Chargers but said, “It doesn't make any difference. I really don't care what they say. They're at $2 million.” While the potential total value of the Chargers' contract proposal is $50 million over six years, in line with other top quarterbacks, the only guaranteed money is $2 million.

After an early morning flight to catch up with San Diego Chargers quarterback Drew Brees in Birmingham, Ala., where Brees was rehabilitating his shoulder, the Dolphins will have continued opportunity to court the free agent Sunday in Miami, a source said.

Brees met with Dolphins executives, including coach Nick Saban, as the Dolphins hoped to make their high interest level clear with the unexpected flight. Brees was scheduled to then catch his own flight to New Orleans at noon today, where he will meet with the Saints until tomorrow.

After an overnight visit in New Orleans, Brees will travel to South Florida for his visit with the Dolphins. Another source close to the quarterback said “it’s tough to say” whether Brees’ first choice is Miami or New Orleans, but it appears both teams will get their fair shot.

“He’s still scheduled to get into Miami tomorrow,” the source said. “He’s going to make the New Orleans trip today. They seem anxious to have him in. He’ll leave Birmingham at noon, and he’ll spend the rest of today and part of tomorrow there. Then, he’s headed to Miami.”
