OB changing offense. Dramatically!

O'Brien is installing an entirely different offense this offseason, the Texans coach revealed to NFL Network's James Palmer at the Annual League Meeting in Orlando.

"Why put in an entirely different offense? He really told me everybody saw what we did with Deshaun this past season," Palmer explained on Wednesday's edition of Up to the Minute Live. "They're changing things and it's not even completely put into place yet. They're still putting it all together.

"And he said the teaching portion of this is going to be the challenge because of Deshaun's specific skill set that is so different and so lethal at the same time. ... But they are changing things up dramatically on the offensive side of the ball."

Like I was saying earlier, no reason to have different systems then.

1 for Watson and another for an Immobile QB.

I'm excited but am going to temper my expectation.

I think this is OB realizing that he has the perfect chess piece in Watson.

Maybe this year we'll see that secret "edge" offensive player we read about 2 years ago?

Just when it starts to come together, BOB has us running on faith again. I'm not complaining because we have no idea what this is going to look like yet. But I'm right back where I was 4 years ago in trying to figure out if BOB knows what the hell he's doing.

The changes they made to the offense last year were the only 'good results' we've seen with BOB's offense. Now we're changing it.

I think last year they built the offense on the fly....... I truly believe they are taking what they have had last season and going to build something from there.... Taking the show me first approach before I get overly excited about this team. I save my excitement energy for the Astros and Rockets.

You can't effectively change a whole offense beginning in the regular season. O'Brien did a great job of trying to do so on the fly when Watson came in. But he had to go to the offense that was established throughout the offseason and preseason when Savage had to take over. I am sure that what O'Brien is talking about when he says there will be a "dramatic change in the offense" is that he will build on what Watson's strengths are and develop, refine and institute the offense formally (rather than on the fly) during this offseason/preseason.

Why is this a surprise? Surely no one thought he would do anything but design an offense to showcase #4 skill set as he did last year? Coach now knows what the kid can do and will scheme accordingly. I'm wondering how his "speed guys" that he got [L. Miller, B. Miller and Tyler Erving] will do.

That makes me wonder what O'Brien was doing last off-season after drafting Watson. Either he thought the same offense would work with him, or he didn't think Watson would start so didn't get ready for him.

Tom Savage was the starter all off-season and the first game of last year...so no the entire offense would not have built around the back-up QB

Maybe he's gonna install a screen pass!! Can you imagine!!?? Go crazy Bill, go crazy!!

We call screen passes. THEY JUST SUCK GOAT GONADS. So we shouldn't.

Chaps my ass. Thru 3 HCs and umpteen DCs, screen play means -2 for us or 7 for them.

Capers/Palmer/Casserly thought a screen play was draft a 225 lb WR, huck it to him behind the LOS and pray.

We got a bit more sophisticated in our failure after that.

And this play seems to be Bill's "trick the crap out of em" play....I remember 2 times it working. The OT screen to AJ to beat the Jags (that may have been Kubiak still, not sure) and the one time to Dhop against the Seahawks.

Other than those 2 plays, you are right, it's usually hold your breath and hope for the best.

So...they made changes last year with Watson and had good results so now given more time the changes they make are going to be worse?

No idea. Ever work with windows 8? It is possible to spend a lot of time on something and it not go well. If this was RAC announcing major changes to the defense, I'd be optimistic. We'll wait and see. Just trying to give you a sense of why there may be negative reactions to the news - BOB's track record.

Won't matter .. Deshauns best attribute is freestyling .. Buttchin can call what he wants (why he is switching what seemed to work is wierd after 6 games) but Deshaun will make it work .. his way.

So then his plan was to start Savage all season, even when seeing them both in training camp

That's how the Texans behaved until there was further in game information about how bad Savage really was versus he could get us by so we don't force the rookie into the line-up...

Not rehashing the sequense of events all over again(and the rumors associated)...we saw how it played out.

Find something else to complain about O'Brien. Not tearing down an offense for a rookie the team is not planning on starting until it has to is what you trying make out to be. There is plenty other things he has/is doing worth the mental energy

Color me skeptical til proven otherwise. Unless that plan includes Lamar Jackson?
Lamar is a RD1 QB as it stands now....his stock is going up and it's going up as a QB.

Lamar is my second rated QB behind only Rosen imo. This is merely that outside the box thinking that could really create change, not just Texans but NFL in general.

The real change I see coming is copycating Eagles Defensive approach and add a bunch of pass rushers and generally hit the QB much as possible.

As long as they don't go all Buddy Ryan on defense and put a bounty on a guy (QB) to get him off the field versus just playing good defense.

The Texans already tried that with Watt, Clowney, and Mercilus but they couldn't stay on the field together very long! :ouch:

It should’ve been.

We’re not just talking a back up qb. We’re talking a rookie first rounder who was brought in to be the franchise qb. Yes, go ahead and start designing a good chunk of the offense around that guy.

Sure, OB foolishly named him the back up behind Savage but even thinking optimistically, that was going to last a season at the longest.

That's what he actually did..why i feel some are chasing a criticism.

Hopefully these changes include a lot of play action fakes as it seemed like Deshaun was incredibly effective running those type of plays as was the offense as a whole.

If it means not running Miller up the middle again, that's good. We also have more flexible O-line man in terms of different positions, hopefully it also means Deshaun doesn't get hurt anymore and no one figures our offense out. BOB did come out after the Cincy game and said they have a different scheme each week last year

Maybe he means to change it to that style that worked so well last year from that style that did not all the other times before.

lol

Hopefully they look more like this from now on:

True that, but all coming back healthy for round two. Need to add another pass rusher & keep building around foundation.

I hope they can get another good pass rusher in this draft and there should be some decent ones left in the 3rd round. Lewis from Ohio St, and Armstrong from Kansas are 2 that come to mind. And, you're right, they do need to keep building that pass rush foundation. After all, Watt, Mercilus, and Clowney ain't getting any younger!

But when it comes down to a 3rd and 1 late in the game on the road, with the Texans leading and needing only one yard to beat the Patriots and Seahawks in a hostile environment... Does Bill O'Brien have the guts to dial up a worthwhile play to win the damn game? Or will it be the same "Lamar Miller run up the gut just to be stuffed" and then play it safe and punt on 4th down? Will O'Brien trust Deshaun Watson to win the game in those critical situations?

Miller will continue to run up the middle.

Well bottom line is the offense needs more talent, no matter the system.

Hopkins and Watson are elite talents. Fuller is good. After that it looks pretty average/mediocre.

Before Fuller got injured again, he was looking pretty elite. Watson was hitting him deep a lot.

Million dollar question right here.
