Brian Gaine is leaving Houston Texans front office

Interesting as I thought he was in solid here and Texans wanted him to remain

This was an entirely "lateral" job change. Should be evident that he wanted out of here. And his reasons for this would have to start with the boss immediately above him that he had to report to.

Buffalo's front office is coming together quickly at the top. A day after announcing the hire of Jim Schoen as Assistant general manager, GM Brandon Beane confirmed the hiring of Brian Gaine as Vice President of Player Personnel.

Gaine interviewed for the Bills general manager position when the Pegulas were trying to fill that post a couple of weeks ago, but Beane, who has known Gaine for the past five years took what he called a "shot in the dark" to land the Houston personnel executive.

"It's generally a pretty lateral move, but Brian was excited about building this and starting this," Beane told Buffalobills.com. "I think partnering with me and Joe was attractive. I know Brian and who he is to the core and trust that he's going to be a big time asset."

Gaine, who was most recently the Director of Player Personnel with the Houston Texans, has 18 years of NFL personnel experience.

Along with Houston GM Rick Smith, Gaine has helped to assemble one of the most talented defensive rosters in the league. He supervised all pro player evaluation, the advance scouting process, free agency and the monitoring of player transactional movement in all professional leagues while with the Texans.

Last year he was interviewed for the San Francisco 49ers general manager post and has interviewed in recent years for the Eagles, Bears and Jets GM openings.

Gaine has worked for four different NFL clubs prior to his arrival in Buffalo, including division rivals Miami and New York. During his six years with the Dolphins he worked alongside Schoen and served his last two years as Assistant general manager (2012-2013).

In addition to Smith in Houston, Gaine has worked with Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland, Dick Haley and Terry Bradway in his NFL career.

So yeah, straight lateral move...Dude basically just jumped ship, doesn't look good for our F.O. something is going on there.

#Bills announced they are hiring Brian Gaine as their new VP of Player Personnel. Big hire in Buffalo… very difficult reality for #Texans.

Bills announce they've hired Texans exec Brian Gaine as VP of player personnel. Gaine was huge in bridging coaching and scouting in Houston.

Brian Gaine was a major contributor to Texans' personnel dept should be a big asset to the Bills in new job

....Gaine, a New York native, interviewed for the Buffalo general manager's job two weeks ago that went to Brandon Beane. The Bills were impressed enough to offer Gaine an opportunity to work with Beane and new assistant general manager Jim Schoen....

Had heard this was coming. Seemed unlikely due to lateral move, but league sources made it clear Gaine was seeking a fresh start w/#Bills.

Highly regarded. Was a true ally of O'Brien w/#Texans. Had heard rumors #49ers delayed hiring GM/HC b/c they wanted O'Brien/Gaine tandem.

Or Brian Gaine got the chance to work for a team closer to home. I would jump at a chance to return to my native state, be closer to family and still do a job I enjoy.

I don't think it's that simple. Where there's smoke there's fire. There's a obvious schism going on over there on Kirby.. Rumors were already getting leaked out last season. Of course everyone towed the company line and denied it, but you can just sense tension.

Oh well, winning is a great cologne..for their sake I hope everything falls in place and we come out of the gate swinging...because if we don't and the truck ends up in the ditch, it's going to get UUUUGLLY.

Big loss for us. Gaine has interviewed multiple times for a GM job and been passed over. He's got a new job title now so maybe he thinks if he can help turn around Buffalo it'll help him get a GM job quicker than staying here where we've had more success than the Bills the last several years.

Still a stretch. Nothing there suggests Gaines had issues with Smith. So what the 49ers thought they could get O"b & Gaines. First, we have a poster here saying O"b is pissed he didn't get to bring in his own personnel guy, but we're supposed to believe O"b & Gaines are peas in a pod?

Then many a poster here would take baby Shany over O"b, but we're supposed to believe the 49ers we're waiting on O"b to be available & not on Atlanta to be eliminated.

:ok:

We have no first or second round pick next year, plus we're gonna be cap constrained after signing Hopkins and Clowney.

There isn't much for him to do.

He is not going down with this ship.

I suspect that Gaine saw there was no potential for in.-house promotion given Smith's solid standing here.

The Bills clusterf%$K is a situation where advancement is more of a reality.

I think we're overlooking the fact that the Texans let him go.

Remember how "O'b wanted to leave." But the Texans wouldn't let him?

Same thing with Gaines. He "jumped ship" because the Texans let him "jump ship."

How's that? The only "up" he can go is to replace the man that brought him in. If Bean is doing a good job Gaines has nowhere to go. If Bean falls on his face, Gaines is right there with him.

It's really simple,

Gaine didn't/couldn't work with Ricky McNair.

Texans loss.

BTW, this makes 2 pro player personnel guys that have left during the Ricky McNair tenure. Ever ask the question why?

Wait... weren't we all applauding the first guy leaving?

Nope

But I thought they upgraded by hiring Gaine. He's really good. I was hoping they would promote Ricky and make Gaine GM. A certain upgrade

Well they were both North East guys and came from the Parcells tree..who knows, maybe they saw more eye to eye than people realize. It's definitely possible. Just saying.

How shitty is our franchise that someone made a lateral move to the ******* BILLS.

I don't think we're shitty.. just incompetent and there is a difference. Ravens took some of our players and won a SB, so did Denver.

There's a hangup inbetween the front office and coaching staff.. Talent on the field has been there. (Outside of the QB position lately, but again..goes back to front office). Don't be surprised if members of our coaching staff don't get poached at the end of this season. As well as a couple of players. People around the league obviously recognize what we have here..and they've won with it. We haven't.

Honestly I think it's a difference of philosophy between the two. We should've parted ways with Rick Smith when Bill O'Brien came on board. We're still drafting for Kubiak in a lot of ways. I just don't think these guys get along at all, but that's just me. Hopefully I'm wrong and they figure it out. Like I said earlier and I know it's a cheesy cliche, but winning is the cure all cologne.. if these guys win, things are going to be fine. If not, all hell is going to break loose. That's just how I see it.

We need to get core players signed though.. we didn't **** can Assweiler for a second for nothing. We have to lock up Hopkins before the season starts.

lol that was 25 years ago

Holy **** you're making me feel old.

What was the joke back then.. What's the difference between the Bills and a dollar bill?.. A dollar bill gives you 4 quarters..

Still they kicked our ass. We didn't turn out another 50. I don't think another team will ever do what they did..or really want too.. imagine the heartache.. I do remember another joke.

"In 3rd world countries they must think the Bills are the greatest team ever". (They had to send those T-shirts somewhere)

Still like I said, that will never happen again, a team will go undefeated before another team will ever reach 4 straight SBs, their kicker screwed them. That was really a great team..just a shame though. That team was stacked with HOF talent.

Yup. Damn shame.

But that was a long time ago. That organization is a farce and a joke and an embarrassment and has been for a long time.

This thread is a classic case of people seeing what they want to see because of their inherent bias against McNair, Smith, or both.

Bad teams poach good people because, well, they don't want to remain bad. It is technically a promotion in title and pay, and moves the man closer to his family. The Texans gave him their blessing (and permission) to take the job.

Take it for what it is, not what you desperately want it to be.

My thought exactly. Do this well and you're in the line for GM.

Keep telling yourself that.. I don't hate McNair or Smith, Gaine was going to get his position regardless.. and it's a lateral move, they said so...but I wish him the best and don't blame him at all. It really is a smart decision... just don't paint me as a McNair, Smith hater.

There is a obvious schism going on though.

I don't recall quoting any of your posts or mentioning your name. The thread, in general.

It's a lateral move with more upside for promotion as well as being closer to home. How is that such a stretch? You guys are delusional.

Well then I apologize, but I'm not going to lie..I was critical of them. Again sorry.

No, I get it. This is a tough loss for the organization, no doubt. Absolutely did not want him to go. Just saying that some are predispositioned to see everything as a failing of Rick Smith.

You know it's bad when you want to leave Houston Texas to go to Buffalo New York. Trading in his dysfunctional job for a functional one.

I would not be surprised if we were to learn later that Bill O'Brien gave Brian Gaine a heads up telling him that it was highly unlikely he (O'Brien) would be the head coach of the Houston Texans next year and that if a better opportunity came around for Brian he should consider taking it.

So if OB is truly out the door after this season, why did they trade up to draft a qb? Why not wait for your new HC to pick or help pick their QB. Instead you will stunt and probably ruin your rookie qb's growth by changing systems on them this early on. It doesn't make since to draft a qb knowing you will have a different coach next year.

You're right on all counts, it doesn't make sense..............until you realize the move came from the smart Texans FO.
