NFL Random Thought of the Day

Maybe that DUI last year opened his eyes up some?

Vince Young hires agent in hopes of reviving playing career
http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...oung-hires-agent-leigh-steinberg-eye-comeback

Former NFL quarterback Vince Young has hired agent Leigh Steinberg in an apparent attempt to reboot his football career.

Steinberg announced that he signed Young, 33, in a Twitter post on Wednesday, declaring Young has a "dream of playing more football."

Young, the former star at Texas, has not played in an NFL regular-season game since 2011 and retired from football in 2014.

The Spring League, an independent four-team football league made up of free agents that debuts in April, has publicly expressed interest in adding Young, the former No. 3 overall pick who earned Rookie of the Year honors and made the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2009 during his six years in the NFL.

Young last attempted a comeback in 2014, a brief offseason stint with the Cleveland Browns. He signed following a minicamp tryout but was cut days after the Browns drafted Johnny Manziel. Before that, Young was cut by the Green Bay Packers in the preseason in 2013.

...

Young was sentenced to 18 months probation in January after pleading no contest to a DWI charge. He was fined $300 and ordered to complete 60 hours of community service to resolve his case after a January 2016 arrest in Austin.

Young told police he had consumed only "3-4 beers" prior to getting into his truck. No way a male drinker of his known magnitude of party drinking tolerance demonstrates police findings. When arrested, Young refused a breathalyzer test. But his blood alcohol concentration taken within an hour of being pulled over was 3 Xs the legal limit.............0.246. He has been nailed with 18 months probation for the arrest, a $300 fine, and 60 hours of community service. He's also be commanded to attend a drunk driving class and maintain a car breathalyzer device for nine months.

In the very unlikely event that he ever makes it to the NFL, he would already be facing a 2 game suspension right off the bat.

With his Wonderlic score of 6 type of smarts and his past choices, how much he "learned" in his drunk driving test or from his other "learning" experiences have to be very questionable.

Dolphins acquire Julius Thomas from Jags for a 7th round pick. Reunited with Adam Gase who he had his best years under. Good move for the Fins. I wanted him on the Texans to compliment Fido when I read he was a possible cap casualty this offseason.

Not sure why they are doing it as 2 separate trades but it is really Julius Thomas for Branden Albert.

DeMeco Ryans has been hired by the 49ers as a defensive quality control coach. Wish we could've added him to our staff for his career change but maybe we'll get him down the line...

Darrelle Revis hearing delay could be precursor to a plea deal
February 21, 2017, 7:20 PM EST

On the same day that Pittsburgh attorney Robert Del Greco Jr. finagled a glorified parking ticket for Steelers linebackers coach Joey Porter, Del Greco may have laid the foundation for getting a similar outcome for Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis.

A postponement in a preliminary hearing set for February 23 to March 15 could be (key words: could be) a precursor to resolving the case with a citation or similar wrist-slap. Then again, it’s possible that it’s simply another example of the delays that routinely happen in the criminal justice system.

The action pushes the court appearance beyond the date on which the Jets have to decide whether to pay a $2 million roster bonus to Revis. In Pennsylvania, the preliminary hearing typically entails the presentation of evidence to support the pending charges. While the standard of proof to allow the case to continue is low, it’s an opportunity for the prosecution to disclose potentially embarrassing and troubling facts that otherwise aren’t yet publicly known. The information revealed could, in theory, have been a factor in the decision as to whether the Jets would pay the $2 million bonus.

As a practical matter, it shouldn’t matter. The Jets need to make a football decision as to Revis, given the ambiguity and (for now) the holes in the case that seem to give rise to reasonable doubt. While it could be argued that the Jets should pay Revis the $2 million because they already owe him $6 million fully guaranteed (the guarantee will void if he’s suspended before the season starts), a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT the $6 million is subject to offset language. If he’s cut now, the Jets would get credit for the first $6 million Revis earns elsewhere in 2017.

Even if he doesn’t earn $6 million, the Jets will get dollar-for-dollar credit based on the compensation in his next contract for 2017. Thus, with or without the pending charges, the smart move could be to move on from Revis and hope that someone else pays him $6 million or something close to it for 2017.

That’s a far better outcome than keeping him at a total compensation package of $17 million in 2017, which is what the Jets will owe him if he’s on the roster as of Week One.

Just thinking about the GREAT Warren Moon. I loved watching him play. The man threw a beautiful tight spirals with a minimal arch and hit his receivers in stride.

Didn't know he was on the 49ers staff. Always liked him when he was w us. Damn injuries!

7. New 49ers quality-control assistant DeMeco Ryans should be a natural for coaching. As a player, he was seen as a smart, hard-working leader.

This is one of the times seats at the stadium can count. Folks want to convert vets, stars especially, into coaches. But if you see the sidelines that never reach camera you can see who is in contention for that transition. Aaron Glenn and DeMeco looked like fighter pilots describing engagements to other players damn near between every series. They were already coaching. Smith was one of the few who could get Mario to settle down and listen. Game day AJ was 110% focused on his best effort. In camp, etc. he gave some advice but not the same thing.

We had the most impossible luck, there was .01 chance of our #1 prospect and biggest need Derrick Johnson falling into our laps - and we traded down for Okoye
We got lucky drafting a GREAT ILB and true leader in Demeco Ryans (in the second round) - who suffered too major of injuries to be the player we needed
We got lucky and drafted another GREAT ILB and pure, violent, athletic football playing SOB - a perfect partner to Demeco (before Ryans was injured) - and then has his knee destroyed (twice) a couple years later.

I'm kinda wondering if our ILB position is cursed.

Earl Mitchell signs with Niners on 4-year, $16M deal
After four years in Houston, Mitchell signed as an unrestricted free agent in 2014 and played in 37 games (21 starts) in three seasons with the Dolphins. He amassed 72 tackles (46 solo) and two sacks there.

I wish he had played four years in Houston. Heck, I'd like for him to have played all 7 in Houston. I'm sure he would have if we had Wade, RAC, or Vrabel back in 2010. IMO this is evidence of the same BS between Rick Smith & our coaches that has sabotaged many of our mid round draft picks.

Yeah, many of them were rough around the edges, in need of the special attention only the team that drafted them would invest. But that's what coaches are for right?

Well, this is 2 coaching staffs that have been sabotaged. Ricky McNair may be the one doing the sabotaging. You know kinda like Os and the QB situation.

Are you saying Earl Mitchell was not a quality prospect?

I think he was/is. Rick did his job acquiring talent. The coaches botched it. Just like they almost did with Mercilus. Good thing Vrabel & RAC came along when they did, or we'd have lost that one too.

I think it's a tribute to both Wade's staff and RAC's staff that Mercilus has become what he is - and what he is is still quite inconsistent. That was a bad pick - a one year wonder tweener that needed a ton of work. He flashes brilliantly at times, but should've been a second/third rounder, and is living off of being hidden behind Watt and Clowney. He wouldn't be the Vrabel success story without all the work Wade put into making him a player.

So even the late first round pick that records double digit sacks in a season is a bad pick?

Nope, I'm saying Ricky is getting involved in who plays and who doesn't. Usually it comes down to he who makes the $$$$ plays whether they're the best player or not.

Ravens safety Matt Elam has been arrested early this morning on charges of possession of more than 20 grams of cannabis, possession of cannabis with the intent to sell or deliver, and possession of a controlled substance. The Raven have already announced that he will not be re-signed.

I don't follow your logic here. Smith didn't hire O'Brien so he cannot fire him; only McNair can do that. In fact, and correct me if this is wrong, but McNair has hired (and fired) every HC the Texans have ever had. So what power does Smith have over O'Brien to make him start someone he (O'Brien) doesn't want to start??

Now if you had said, "McNair stepped in and told O'Brien to start Osweiler over Savage...", I could see some logic in that line of thought because McNair could fire O'Brien if he didn't do what the boss told him to do.

Ricky is carrying out the McNair's wishes. He never tells the McNair's things like I don't think it's a good idea to play Os because he knows that the McNair's don't want to hear that. You know, like a good yes man that he is.

Gotta give it to Ricky McNair though, he's made millions off of the McNair's with this philosophy.

Busy day today. Vikings decline Adrian Peterson's option making him a FA. Chiefs re-sign Eric Berry to 6-year deal making him highest paid Safety in the league. Also, the Redskins tagged Kirk Cousins again.

Chiefs also re-signed a guard to a 5 year $42.5M deal. I don't understand where that money is coming from.

This just points out that if a team really wants to keep a player 90% of the time they can find a way to keep him. When teams use the salary cap as an excuse for not keeping a guy that means that although they may like him, he's not a core piece of the team.

The cap increased $12M from last year.

If I look at spotrac, which includes the increase in salary cap plus their rollover, it shows only $6.5M of space after the Charles cut and before adding in Berry and this guard, because the specifics of those contracts haven't been released. The only thing that I can think of is that the option of $10.75M on Foles is being counted against their cap, even though they don't owe him anything if they decide not to pick up the option. I didn't add all the numbers up myself, too tedious, so I've been counting on their accounting. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

@PapaL that explains it then. I was wrong about their situation initially due to this. Sorry for the wasted effort in following their moves.

Report: Glennon expected to receive contract worth $14M-15M per year
Arun Srinivasan Mar 5, 2017 9:24 PM
Impending free-agent quarterback Mike Glennon is expected to receive a contract that will pay him between $14 million and 15 million per season, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.

Glennon spent the first four years of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 27-year-old played sparingly during the past two seasons after the Buccaneers selected Jameis Winston first overall in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Glennon completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,417 yards and 10 touchdowns against six interceptions in six games during the 2014 season.

As one of the best quarterbacks in this year's free-agent class, it'll be compelling to see which teams bid for Glennon, who's two years removed from meaningful playing time.

Jags sign Barry Church and Calais Campbell.

They have spent a ton of money on their defense. Fortunately for us they continue to neglect their OL!

Just got an update on NFL Mobile, DeSean Jackson to sign with the Buccaneers. Redskins lose Jackson and Garcon. Good luck with that, Cousins.

Tampa is going to make some noise in NFC South. Especially if they take Dalvin Cook in the draft!

Skins drafted a WR to help this situation, too bad for them their pick didn't play much due to injuries. They go into the draft with Jamison Crowder (126 career catches), Reggie Diggs (0 career catches), Josh Doctson (0 career catches), Ryan Grant (39 career catches), Maurice Harris (8 career catches), Matt Hazel (0 career catches), and Kendal Thompson (0 career catches) as their WRs. They do however have decent weapons at TE if they can stay healthy...which historically they have not.

Proud of Vince,

going to a place where he can excel not to mention
the Roughriders are actually quite good year in and
out, so wish him the best in his CFL career

can't wait to watch him play again
