Texans reached a 5-year agreement with Derek Newton, per league source.

Always a big weekend for teams to make last-minute push to re-sign its own players. Houston gets it done.

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter
Houston gave Derek Newton a 5-year, $26.5 million deal, including $10m guaranteed; 13.75M in first 2 and $17M in first 3. Not bad for a 7th rd pick

Pro Football Focus ‏@PFF
Derek Newton returns to HST on 5yr deal per @AdamSchefter. Highest run block grade among RTs last season, +13.4

I'm okay with this depending on the numbers. The light seemed to come on for him this year at times. Perhaps he can put it all together. Any details on the contract?

That's a good contract if Newton can sustain his level of performance from last year. However, I'm not so sure. Last year was the first time he was even above average and he still graded out pretty negative as a pass blocker. I'm not too big on giving a guy with his track record a 5 yr deal based off a contract year performance.

With $10 million guaranteed, I would guess the signing bonus is in the $6-$8 million range... So, he could be cut after 2 years without much dead money to deal with. So, this is not a troublesome contract, based on the information we have so far.

Looks like it avg out to $5M/yr, which is what we signed Winston to, then cut him lose when we got in a pinch.

But according to the other numbers, sounds like it'll be paying out $6M/yr over the first three years... I have to assume the last two years are "team friendly" & he's most likely to play it out.

I agree. I'm not really talking about the contract specifically. I'm talking about making a 5 yr commitment to a guy based off one contract year when he was a pretty big liability to the offense every other year.

Now perhaps that has more to do with O'Brien > Kubiak and I guess we'll find out. Just never been a fan of long term commitments to "one year wonders". Would have preferred a shorter deal to prove last year wasn't a fluke before getting a long term commitment.

However, like you said, in the long run the money won't be a hindrance to the team if he doesn't work out.

Remember, 2013 he was injured/recovering all year long.

Derek Newton entered 2014 w/ an annual value of just under $4M. His 2014 performance rated at nearly $7M. Right year to get noticed.

But as DaleMurphey explained it's really basically just a 2-year commitment from the Texan perspective given the signing bonus/guaranteed money.

True, but he was healthy the year before and was just as brutal in 14 starts. Then again, his improvement may just be as simple as switching out of Kubiak's system (which I never thought he was a good fit for) and moving into O'Brien's.

I've stated time and again before that I have complete faith in O'Brien so I'm not against bringing him back and expect him to sustain his level of performance. I just generally , on principle, don't agree with long term commitments to contract year performers. More often than not they do not work out. Every case is different though and should be judged individually.

I like it & if he starts to suck, they can cut him in 2 yrs! I thought he proved himself last year. One less position to deal with! Now....WR(s) & Center!:swatter:

Gives us some draft flexibility.

Yes. Still need to invest in OL at some point though. Brooks and Jones are both UFA's next year and we already have poor depth behind them. Need to address that. Clabo and Yeatman are also UFA's next year. Brooks is probably our best OL at this point and will want to be compensated as such.

The OL we have under contract for 2016 are Brown, Newton, XSF, Quessenberry, Ferentz, Witzmann, and Feiler. No depth inside whatsoever.

Good signing in my eyes. Keep that Oline moving forward and don't neglect it. People call this guy a one year wonder, but maybe he just got his ass in gear once he got a new HC staff that was going to be all business the minute they arrived. Maybe the new system helped him last year and he came into his own. Who knows? He was Rotoworld's highest rated RT last season though either way. He earned this contract. Let's hope that he sustains the play that he had in 2014.

It seems like a contract we can get out of pretty easily after years 2 and 3 if he isn't performing. But I think he'll perform well just like last year.

My guess is they draft an interior lineman (G/C) somewhere in the middle rounds maybe as early as the 2nd but probably in the 3rd or 4th. Somebody like Marpet would be a good choice. Then possibly go for a developmental OT they can use as a "swing tackle" somewhere in the late rounds. Just a guess though.

You're right. But, I think the Jackson and Newton signings allow the Texans to find value since they won't need immediate starters. I do think guys like Scherff and Collins still make sense in the 1st in that they provide positional versatility.

Texans have signed cheap OT backups and I think that could happen to replace Clabo and use his savings $1.2 m.

Scherff will more than likely be long gone by #16. Collins is the guy I have my eye on though. He can play virtually any position along the OL.

Fisher will likely be gone by the time we're on the clock in the 2nd. Will have to trade up for him. Most people seemed to have Marpet as a mid rounder but his stock has skyrocketed after the Senior Bowl and Combine. Probably will be gone before we're up in the 3rd.

I'll add that I really like both guys as well, but both guys are rising right now so we will have to be aggressive to get either one. Unlikely to get either by sitting pat and hoping they fall to your 2nd or 3rd round pick.

yeah, still a long way to go... lots of shuffling of the board yet to come

Or it could be it takes 7th round projects time to develop to their potential.

It's not a bad deal for both sides. Averages out about 5 MIL a year and locks him up for 5 years, which if he continues his upward trend it could turn into a steal.

Long term I'm definitely concerned about the interior of the OL. Jones will likely go back to his natural fit at center. Xavier really will have to become the guard they drafted him to be this next year. Brooks will likely want to get paid next year barring getting a smart extension in place this year. Depth is a concern up and down the line.

"Oh man, a lot of nerves," Newton told KHOU 11 Sports. "A lot of pace walking, it was a lot of pressure."
...
"It feels amazing, just blessed to be in the situation I'm in," Newton said.
...
"I just wanted to remain a Texan," Newton said. "Throughout my four years I had great chemistry with the team, made a lot of friends on the team and I just didn't want to leave that behind."
...
"Before I left, the exit interviews with Rick we had talked about how my four years went and one of the things he said was that he wanted me to remain a Texan," Newton said. "He saw a bright future with me there."
...
The game slowed down after the first couple of years, allowing him to blossom into the talent the Texans see has a bright future with the team.

"When I was able to think less, I was able to just play," Newton said. "I think everything just fell into line for me. Just a lot of hard work, support system, great teammates to coach me up, and coaches on my side letting me know what I'm doing wrong, what I'm doing right. It's been a long road."

Congrats to my guys @D_Newt75 and @ReemBoi25 Next round of drinks are on yall! #HardWorkPaysOff#KeepGrinding#Motivation

"Chris is a great guy, man," Newton said. "He just told me to stay motivated. He was one of the guys I was constantly talking to everyday and just saying positive things to keep me going."
...
"I just want to get better," Newton said. "Keep the team chemistry together, winning games, becoming a leader to help the team win in anyway."

The maturation of Derek Newton
John Harris | Mar 9, 2015
Late last summer, we got the news that we’d all be traveling to Denver for a week of practice with the Denver Broncos. Thoughts just flooded my brain about what, and who, we’d see that week.

Peyton. Demaryius. Welkah...well, if you’re from Boston like the Texans head coach, Welker, if you’re from any other part of the country.

Then, it hit me, oh man, that means…

DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller.

The Broncos signed Ware in the 2014 off-season and Miller was fully recuperated from his ACL injury in 2013. Many thought that Ware and Miller made up the best pass rush duo in the NFL.

Of course, as my brain was playing stream of consciousness games, the image of those two against Texans right tackle Derek Newton popped into my head.

The former Arkansas State product was coming off of a rough 2013 season, but during OTAs and early training camp he looked like a new man. And, a new tackle. He moved quickly, slid laterally well and showed some pop and power.

That week in Denver was the week I knew Derek Newton was ready to be the rock on the right side opposite Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown. It really only took one snap on the first day.

Within the first hour of the very first practice, the Broncos pass rushers and the Texans offensive linemen settled in for the best part of training camp - pass rush one-on-ones. Ware lined up over Brown for the first rep, so I knew that Miller was due to face Newton on the other side. We had seen an improved and more confident Newton to this point, but stopping, or slowing, the former Aggie seemed like a confidence killer waiting to happen.

Miller burst off the ball and threw a quick, explosive...

Nice article to link to, Playoffs. Just like Kareem Jackson, it takes time for the college athletes to put in pro techniques into their game mindlessly. Of all the hate RS gets for his drafts (and he should), he does have a few undrafted picks and 6-7 rounders to balance it out with.

I still feel it's a long shot to be honest...but IF he could by some miracle get back to where he was pre-injury, he could really give the oline a boost of depth and experience.

I want it to work out but it's not a particularly forgiving sport. Lose a year and it's tough. Lose much more than that and you're probably done. I'm pulling for him. The NFL makes for a lot of inspiring comeback stories. Unfortunately it also makes for a lot of Charles Spencer type stories too.

Texans impressed by Derek Newton’s comeback work ethic

The Texans still don’t know if right tackle Derek Newton will be able to play again at his previous level. But they know he’s working diligently toward that goal.

Newton’s been out since rupturing the patellar tendons in both knees in Week Six of 2016, but Texans coach Bill O’Brien said he’s been impressed with what he’s seen so far.

“I would say he’s on schedule
