STRENGTHS: Packs the muscle on his frame very well, carrying his 300+ pounds easily with a large wingspan powerful tackler, wrapping and driving through his man, bringing his legs with him good grip strength to tear at the POA with heavy, active hands anchors well, keeping his butt low and digging his cleats in to hold his ground displays closing burst once he sees red and shows examples of the flexibility and body control needed for the position does a nice job keeping his eyes elevated and tracks the ball well very strong work ethic and pushed himself in the weight room, adding 50+ pounds since his senior year in high school versatile and saw snaps at the 0-, 3- and 5-technique spots played several roles in Alabamas multiple front.
WEAKNESSES: Limited range and doesnt show the needed fluidity to consistently make plays away from the LOS inconsistent snap anticipation and too often was the last to move off the ball extremely raw as a technician and lacks an ideal understanding of his surroundings unrefined pass rush arsenal and needs to develop his mechanics as a rusher late to disengage and needs to refine his hand fundamentals aggressive intensity seems to come and go, showing some passive qualities and lacking a consistent mean streak at the POA unimpressive resume and production with only 11 starts under his belt lackluster career stats: 61 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks some durability concerns after a serious knee injury in 2010 as a senior in high school didnt work out at the NFL Combine due to a left labrum tear and left quad contusion.
SUMMARY: A four-star DE recruit, Pagan had a whirlwind recruitment, originally committing to Florida before switching to Clemson and eventually choosing Alabama. He saw back-up duty as a true freshman and sophomore before finally breaking into the starting line-up as a junior in 2013, finishing with 34 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Pagan surprised many when he decided to skip his senior year and could have used another year in college, but the injury risk weighed heavily in his decision. He is a very hot/cold prospect and his highlights make him look like a future 1st round pick, but his impact snap-to-snap leaves a lot to be desired. Pagan shows natural ball awareness, but too often hes busy hung up on blocks and cant do anything about it. He has some moldable traits, but is extremely green and needs time and a patient coaching staff to cultivate his raw skills possesses some untapped potential and should be considered an ascending 5-technique
3-4 DE, right? Not exactly a DT?
Absolutely. Our starters on defense should eventually be: Watt at left end, Nix at nose tackle, Pagan at right end. Clowney, Reed, Cushing and Mercilus at the four linebacker spots. That's when we play our base 3-4. That being said, a lot has to do with how eager and ready Crennel is to start three rookies in the front seven.3-4 DE, right? Not exactly a DT?
Another defensive end? He gets a C from me.
Well I know Marshall won't like him.
I like the pick. He's a true 3-4 DE and a great scheme fit. Not a lot of production in college because he was busy occupying blockers in Bama's front. He has great athletic upside though.
6-3, 310 lbs and he runs a sub-5.0 forty. He's also just 20 years old. He's the first Bama DL since Dareus that I thought had real potential at the next level. I do think he's a bit of a project though and will need some seasoning. I see Crick as our other starting DE for the next 2 years with Pagan working in rotation.
So how are we going to be able to "grade" these guys? The stat sheet won't show them "producing" much. Is it enough that they stay on their feet?

Another? Right now, we've got
Crick - Nix - Watt
Pagan is probably going to take over that spot from Crick.
damn. We're going to be a YOUNG team.
I do think Crick will start this year. JMO, but I think Rick and Bob decided to pass on an early DE because of what we already had invested in Crick. They will give him a shot this year. Pagan is a very young guy with a ton of potential who can come in and compete, but is probably not ready to start for another year or two. I do love his upside though. I think our front looks like this...
Base
DE - Watt / Jamison
NT - Nix / Powe
DE - Crick / Pagan
Nickel
DE - Mercilus
DT - Watt
DT - Crick
DE - Clowney
If they're smart, they won't put Pagan at LDE. He suffered his shoulder dislocation/labrum tear on the left side.........while he was playing at LDE. That left shoulder will be continually stressed/challenged as he attempts to prevent players coming around the left on the outside. I believe the Texans will plant him on the right......at least for this year.
LSU coach Les Miles on DE Jeff Pagan (from Alabama) Texans 6-th round pick: "He's a guy that will work hard, plays with great technique."
Btw for those that don't know, Pagan burned a 4.7 forty at 270 lbs when he was in high school. Unfortunately, he shredded his knee his senior year and then dealt with other injuries while at Bama.
He's still only 20 years old (turns 21 in June) and it will be interesting to see how he progresses if he can stay healthy. Sadly, I doubt he ever regains the athletic ability that he possessed pre-knee injury.
