Typical Wade Phillips defense. If you look at the history, his defense start out huge, then as the years go by, they start to slide further and further down...
It has been like that almost everywhere he has gone...

You do realize the points include Pick 6's and special teams TD's. Kind of deceiving stat

Yep. Pick-6's in five straight games is 35 points the offense has given up. The special teams has given up at least 14 points. So there's 49 points this team has allowed that the defense didn't contribute to, and that's not counting Schaub's INT that set SD up to score a TD or Tate's fumble that cost this team another 3 points (Seattle didn't even get a first down on that drive).

The Texans D has given up a TD 76% of the time in the red zone (from teamrankings.com, sorry don't have the exact URL). We are LAST in the league in that category.
Our D is stinking it up right now. Their issues have just been overshadowed by the distraction of the QB problems.

Of course the points allowed stats is counting the Schaubs and special teams allowing TDs.
I know this is true, but I still think that part of this is due to them always being on the field and the offense putting them in short fields.
Big deal.
It could mean that the opponents only managed to get to our redzone four times and they scored 3 TDs.
Other teams may have a lower percentage, but they got burned by long bombs before the opponents get to the red zone.
It's better to combine everything on the field to come to a final conclusion.

1.) Average yards surrendered outside the red zone, or how many yards does it take the opponent to get to the red zone, and ...
2.) How successful are they at keeping teams out of the red zone.
Red zone TD percentage by itself doesn't tell me much. The fact that they've given up an 80+ yard drive every game is far more concerning to me than any raw stat anyone has mentioned in this thread.

The Texans suck in the red zone on both sides of the ball this year. It's pathetic really.
And our special teams never seem to get out of the red zone on kickoffs.

Zone blocking teams are notoriously poor in the red zone since they don't have drive blocking type linemen for the most part. ZBS teams are full of feet guys...guys good in space. On defense, as we all know, we don't need no stinkin' large NT.

We were closer to the bottom than the top. We were among the better in the beginning but like with everything else we tailspinned later in the year.

Perhaps there's something that the Texans marketing department could do to lend a hand? Maybe they could rename it "The Battle Red Zone" and give out little red towels to wave whenever the Texans are in it. Then we could get the band "Simply Red" to write and perform a song that the team could play whenever they got into said "Battle Red Zone" (Hey it makes as much sense as bringing Vanilla ****ing Ice in to play on "Everybody wear white day"). The concessions would offer a special discount on Big Red and Killians Red while the team was inside the 20's.

donno, but for quickie examples...the Chiefs defense went to the next level when Poe found himself, the Patriots just stuff the run when the field shrinks when Wilfork is in the game. Sean Rogers is what? 80 years old and still stuffs the middle of the line when you really need to dig in. There comes a time in every game where you just dig in and hold your ground or get pushed back. We get pushed back alot. The laws of physics can not be debated in the red zone.

Every year in April I keep hoping that it will finally be the year the Texans get a big ugly nt in one of the 1st 2 rounds. Never happens.

Wait... Didn't Foster have 15 touchdowns last year? Does not really fit your narrative. The Texans are not getting inside the 5 very often. Think we are last in that category so I don't think it has anything to do with the zone blocking, but rather they cannot get inside the 5 to make it happen.
Looking at the poor run defense against the Rams, it is clear we need a big space eater. Would have been nice to get Poe, but can't get everyone you want.

Here's why it's a big deal and why I tried finding the stat. Coming into last week's game or the game prior, I heard a stat that the Texans D allowed 10 TDs in 11 red zone visits by opposing teams this season. That's a rather alarming number of red zone trips resulting in TDs, not the 3 out of 4 you were hoping it could mean.
Granted, the D has been working with short fields, but anyone watching this year's D can tell something is wrong. They'll play well for spurts, then just give up the booty on the next series.
With the offense, it's easy to point fingers at the QB position, RT and coaching as being piss poor, but where has our D gone? In two years...TWO YEARS, our D has gone from being dominant to a jekyl and hyde group of players who are really playing some bad ball.

I guess it means our defense bites this year after all. Our avg time of possession is 34:53.
For some background, time of possession usually tells the whole story when you have a defense giving up yards. If their offense can't keep them off the field, then it's an offensive problem. Looks like in our case, it's both.:wadepalm:
The offense and ST have given up 49 points so far which is about 8+ points a game. If take that off of the 29 point per game that we are currently averaging then that would put us at about 21 a game. That puts us at about 11th in the league of total scoring defense.
Not saying that tells the whole story but it helps a bit.
The defense needs to play better bottom line because these stats are misleading. We're not creating turnovers. We're not sacking the QB. We suck in the redone. Three big areas that need improvement.
