I usually go to nfl.com for stats and I noticed that our defense is 1st in total yards.

You win games with points tho, not yards. So I looked where the defense is in terms of Points allowed per game

and on nfl.com our defense is tied-25th with 27.8 p/g (139 points total)

but actually 139 is the total Points scored against the texans, included the 4 pick 6s.

Is there a site with better stats description?
I would like to compare the points allowed by the defenses.

(punts, kicks, interceptions or fumbles returned for TD should not fall on the defense in my opinion)
 
You also have short fields where the opposition scores after a Texan turnover. How much of that goes on the defense (San Diego's 1st TD for instance)?
 
Take away the pick 6s and the Texans are still ranked 16th in points allowed.

I don't know how Troy Aikman arrives at his efficiency ratings, but he's got the Texans D rated 20th.

Aikman Efficiency Ratings Formula

"The Aikman Efficiency Ratings measure offensive and defensive performance using a combination of seven key statistics identified by Troy, and then measured against league norms (and extremes) established over the last 10 years. An offense or defense performing exactly at league norms in all categories will achieve a score of 75. The better the offense or defense, the higher the score on either scale.

It will take a truly exceptional unit to score more than 90 during an entire season on either the offensive or defensive scale. Higher scores are possible in individual games.

The seven categories measured are:


20% Adjusted Points -- Total Points Scored or Allowed minus Points on Returns and Safeties
20% Turnovers
20% Red Zone Efficiency -- Measured by Percent of Possible Points
10% Yards Per Play -- divided into Yards Per Rush
10% Yards Per Pass -- includes yards on plays involving sacks.
10% First Down Achievement
10% 3rd Down Conversion Percentage

Percentage of Possible Points in the Red Zone is figured by taking the number of Red Zone Chances times 7,
then dividing it by the number of Points Actually Scored (defined as TDs times 7 plus FGs times 3). "

Aikman's ratings on how he ranks teams are based on a lot more statistics that MATTER outside of just "yards per game" gained and allowed, offensively or defensively. It's a lot more telling of the story than just points per game scored/allowed.

4 points goes to the defense. That was no fluke due to short fields. Our red zone defense is horrible!
 
Honestly, I don't think the defense is all that great which is why I'm not excited about our prospects this season. We aren't consistent over there and our secondary has a penchant for giving up big plays.
 
Technically defense is only giving up 18 ppg without Matt Schaub's errors. But even then we are terrible at red zone % and at forcing turnovers which is a better metric for good defense. "Total defense" is totally overrated.
 
You can't take away the "non defense" points for the Texans and then compare to the league without doing the same for them.

You can see if a player can play by watching the player play, no matter what the numbers are. Schaub has proven that his entire career. Great numbers at times by a horrible QB.

Only numbers that will ever matter in football are the ones on the scoreboard at the end of the game.

We're talking about the defense.
 
How much of that is the defense giving up at the end of a game because they get deflated?

I'd be hard pressed to keep going when your offense is gifting points.

True.

Also, I'd imagine our defense is having to take more chances than they normally would to try to make something happen, due to the offense's performance.

Our defense can certainly improve, but they are definitely not the problem this year.

yeah man stats are totally worthless. JUST THE EYE TEST FOR ME GOOD SIR!

At the same time, how hard is the opposing offense playing if they've already jumped out to a big lead because of the turnovers? (ie. Ravens & 49ers game) I think the stats would be alot worse if the offense was on fire and we were killing teams.
