Yep

Ozzie sees a weakness at OT and makes a move. You can do that when you dont spend all of your $$$$ on the Reed/Ellerbe/Johnson/Boldins of the world.

Ozzie is a risk taker, who does what's best for the franchises future. Rick could learn a thing or 2 from Ozzie.

The Texans and Ravens have diametrically opposite philosophies. Which one would the MB as a whole say is the better philosophy? I know BoB would never let Rick make a trade in season, even if Rick was smart enough to save some extra cap room. Why, because in season trades would be too traumatic.

Meanwhile, tell me more about the Texans current OL situation?

If the Jags are only getting a couple of 3rd day selections, doesn't speak very highly of their opinion of Monroe.

Monroe is only 26, was a top 10 draft pick and he ranks a tad better than Brown and Harris with PFF. Sounds cheap to me and a long term upgrade to McKinnie who isn't playing all to well this year.

After Monroe's performance against the Colts, I'm surprised he wasn't cut on the spot. Like most of the Jags, this guy sucks. Ozzie is an outstanding GM. But not everything he touches turns to gold. This turd won't flush.

Agree steelb, I don't think a Monroe trade is a thought that even crossed the Smubiak mind. Hard to criticize a Ozzie deal, he doesn't miss very often.

What it should be is a giant red flag that PFF isn't to be trusted if a top 10 pick is getting punted on his rookie contract off a suck team even though he is better than All Pro Duane Brown who was considered by many as the best LT in the NFL last year.

Monroe has been a pretty darn good Tackle. Looks like the Jags are getting worse on just about every level since their new ownership. The FO had a feud with their star player year 1 (worse PR). They changed the logo a year ago and I think it was immediately one of the worst ones in the league. Changed Uniforms to something way too busy...another 'worst'. The helmet is just embarrassing. I feel like a rubbernecker watching this franchise develop (for lack of a better term) under Khan. It's like watching a bad wreck on the other side of the freeway.

Don't forget cheap.

What is for cheap? Multiple picks plus he is getting like $4.2 mil this year. That is without the signing bonus which stays with the Jags.

Baltimore is giving up 3rd day picks for a former first rounder. That's cheap. Like the Jags couldn't get rid of him fast enough.

I've seen some Jaguar fans on their board claim he's been somewhat of a bust since being the 8th overall pick in 2009. They are very pleased he's gone and are happy that rookie Luke Joeckel, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2013 draft, now will switch from right tackle to left tackle.

JAX is a complete dumpster fire obviously but I think this is a good trade. They need help everywhere so they need multiple picks like they got. Not like they were going to hold onto Monroe who is a UFA after this season so they got something of value for him while they could.

The Texans have let plenty of players walk, Williams/Barwin/Quinn/Casey/Ryans/Robinson...

Monroe is rated 55th out of 72 OTs by ProFootballFocus for 2013 (>25% teams snaps), which is below Duane Brown and Ryan Harris. Party animal/rap mogul Bryant McKinnie is rated 61st/72.

Monroe, who has been a top 15 OT in 2011 & 2012, should be a very good replacement for the erratic McKinnie. My impression is that he planned to leave J-ville as a free agent, and that the team wanted Joeckel to be moved to his natural LT position where he should excel.

And still never seem to have enough cap room to make moves like this. They sign their players to extentions early (Schaub/Cushing/AJ) eating up cap room that could be used to make moves like Ozzie made here.

It's just a case of different philosophies. I prefer Ozzies. But what I prefer doesn't matter, this is BoB's team and he's going to do with it what he wants. But as fans I wouldn't get my hopes up about winning a Lombardi anytime soon.

I've been against drafting Manziel, but the more I think about it they need a difference make at QB and Manziel will be a difference maker, either good or bad. It's time to take a chance if the Texans are ever going to win a SB.

But BoB is conservative by nature, hiring Rick/Gary/Wade is proof of this. So I dont think BoB will risk picking Manziel. Of course the flip side of that is Manziel would help make BoB a whole lot of $$$$ over the next 5-10 yrs, so I could see BoB making Rick/Gary take Manziel.

BoB M has made it known that BoB Kraft is his friend and mentor and that McNair was adopting "The Patriot Model" in building his team and the hiring of Gary Kubiak. (remember back in 2006 the Patriots had won 3 of the last 5 Super Bowls) The problem with this line of thinking is Gary Kubiak is not Bill Belichick and Matt Schaub is not Tom Brady. I would say that BoB Kraft has BoB McNair right where he wants him. All is fair in love and war!

That's highway robbery. Monroe was legit good in '11 and '12. I don't know how Joeckel has been but I know for those prices he would've been great as the LT while Brown was out (great as in, he would be a good fill in and the play wouldn't drop off to below replacement level), and then slid over to RT.

PFF is the one who graded and spouted Duane Brown as one of the best in 2012. They had him graded as the second best LT in the league last year. This year Brown hasn't played much so hasn't had the chance to rebound from his previous play which was horrendous after the Chargers game where Freeney owned him. So there are no issues in how PFF has him thus far. It'll straighten itself out when he can get on the field again.

Think Tex is meaning in the pass block category for this season as that is where he is above Brown/Harris. In their defense neither has a lot of time to compare against the number of snaps Monroe has had so I find it irrelevant.

In the end, Monroe is actually a very solid tackle and they aren't losing much in the way of picks for him. A nice pick up by the Ravens. Jaguars seem to see what the Browns are doing and are about to consume picks. Wouldn't be surprised to Maurice Jones-Drew on the market at some point. At this rate, though, they're probably a certainity for that number one pick.

I wonder where he's going to rank at the end of the season. I'm pretty sure players play differently when they think they can win, when they think the guy next to him thinks they can win, when everyone knows you're playing for a play-off berth & not draft positioning.

By the way, do you know where Wade Smith ranked the season before he became a Texan & where he ranked his first season as a Texan?

Yep,

But they spent all of their extra cap room on extentions. Basically Rick/Olsen dont have the foresight to prepare for situations like this. Great GM's like Ozzie do.

That's why as long as Ozzie is in Balt the Ravens will always be in the hunt. I mean he did win a SB with Dlifer as his QB.

Smubiak foresight consist of the season at hand and why the situation of the 2014 salary cap will be much like it was/is in 2011/2012/2013. Some would say that is having a consistent hindsight.

I enjoy the irony by those who like to discredit or dismiss PFF when the findings don't support their frame of mind but run to PFF as a primary source when it supports their point of view. The fact that many NFL teams subscribe to PFF suggest strongly that PFF is trustworthy and the comments of a message board poster who likes to have it both ways, not so much.

PFF has decent grades for Front 7 play usually but the stuff on the back end leaves a lot to be desired. Especially since they've been grading stuff from broadcasts (ie before the All-22 footage is released) and I think everybody who watches football on TV knows that the broadcasts don't usually show the action in the secondary until the ball is already on it's way.

I would love to see you and Bob in a cage match

When you can find me rolling out PFF for support then you can bring this up. Otherwise you are once again living in your own delusional world.
