Texans vs. 49ers Injury Status

The left side of the Texans offensive line is slowly working its way back to 100-percent. In Sunday’s 23-20 overtime loss to Seattle, All-Pro left tackle Duane Brown was inactive and Pro Bowl guard Wade Smith was noticeably missing for a portion of the game.

Brown, who has not played in the last two games, remains day-to-day with a sprained toe suffered on September 15 against Tennessee.

“Duane is upbeat, feeling very good today,” head coach Gary Kubiak said Monday. “I think Duane is still a day-to-day process as we work to the weekend and so we’ll see. We’ll know more as we get to Wednesday. The more time we get with Duane, the better.”

Last Thursday Brown practiced with the team but suffered a setback as he was not able to practice again or play in Sunday’s 23-20 overtime loss to Seattle.

“He couldn’t play, bottom line,” Kubiak said. “He pushed himself to the limit. It’s not like we worked him out before the game or anything like that. He just couldn’t do it.”

Smith left Sunday’s game briefly and was replaced by Ben Jones. Kubiak wants Smith, who underwent a knee scope during training camp, to get some rest time during games as a precaution.

“We had a made a decision,” Kubiak said. “Wade’s coming off his knee and he was playing a ton of snaps. He played every snap going into this week and, looking at the long haul, we thought we needed to take a few snaps off of him, so we played Ben (Jones) a couple of series I think in the game. He took about 15-20 snaps off of Wade. Wade responded, he played very good in the game. He gives us everything he has, but we were a little concerned the wear and tear with what was going on with the knee coming back so quick, so that’s what we did.”

Smith’s quick recovery and return were “amazing” according to Kubiak who said the eleven-year veteran did not want to miss any playing time.

“A lot of snaps on his plate the first three weeks and we talked to him,” Kubiak said.

Not only is the left side of the OL not slowly working its way back to 100-percent, but neither is the right side.

It is evident that Duane Brown has suffered a very significant Turf Toe, and was thrown out there anyway to try to practice last week, and as I would have expected "suffered a setback" and is unlikely to be able to play Sunday. Wade Smith suffered what Kubiak reported as "a relatively minor knee sprain" the beginning of August. Then, all of a sudden we hear that he underwent a knee arthroscopy August 13. Then we hear that he "took a full load" in practice in ~ 3 1/2 weeks to play against San Diego 4 weeks post op. He was brought back too soon, and his play has shown it ever since. Derrick Newton, after his patella tendon rupture surgery was brought back in the preseason before he was ready, because they were more concerned that he would not have enough practice with the OL to be effective. Because of this philosophy, his knee is affecting and will continue to affect his play. Now, from what I'm hearing now, Brooks suffered what is likely to also be a Turf Toe, something that can explain his performance against the Seahawks.

In conclusion, I'm not really getting "the OL is slowly getting back to 100-percent" feeling.

"Day to Day" is Texans speak for "He'll probably not play another down this season".

HT.com:

Starting right guard Brandon Brooks missed practice Wednesday with a toe injury. Brooks was injured during Sunday's loss to the Seahawks. He, along with linebacker Tim Dobbins, was not on the field at the Houston Methodist Training Center.

When asked about Brooks' availability for the Sunday night matchup with the 49ers, head coach Gary Kubiak was uncertain.

“I don’t know," Kubiak said. "He didn’t practice today. He’s battling a toe. We’ll see where he’s at each day.”

Expect Ben Jones to be his sub. Wonder who will help at LG.

Duane Brown was on the practice field Wednesday with the Texans, but is still "day-to-day" according to head coach Gary Kubiak.

Brown suffered a toe sprain during the Week 2 win against the Titans, and was inactive because of it the past two games. The left tackle practiced last Wednesday and Thursday, but was inside undergoing treatment on Friday. This afternoon, however, Brown worked with the team inside the Houston Methodist Training Center.

"Duane participated today," Kubiak said. "We were pretty light in what we did, so that I could get everybody involved."

Ryan Harris started in place of Brown at Baltimore and at home against Seattle. If Brown continues to work through the week, though, Harris might return to his backup role for Sunday night's contest at San Francisco.

"Duane did everything," Kubiak said. "He actually stayed out there a little bit extra. It was a big step in the right direction. But he's still day-to-day."

This means he "practiced" only in the afternoon indoors without contact. Last week a similar routine led to a setback.

The line has been abyssmal to say the least when it comes to pass protection. This only makes it worse.

Expect Ben Jones to be his sub. Wonder who will help at LG.

I pray Smith will be able to go (words I never thought I'd say) because after Jones the next guard is Cody White. He looked horrible playing against backups in the preseason...to put it lightly. I sure as hell won't be amped to see him against starters going 100%.

I was one of the few that really seemed to give a damn about QBerry going to IR. I never trusted this OL and suspected he'd play a significant role before the season was out. Then the injury bug hit him. Would be nice to have him about now.

Honestly, I think the team has mishandled the OL.

We've been pretty lucky the past few years when it comes to injuries to the offensive line. The last one I can think of was Briesel and he even came back a few weeks after breaking a leg. Looks like it's time to pay the piper!

It seems as though the OL is having problems with their little piggies this season. Could it be the training staff has no clue when it comes to footwear. Atleast it seemed that way on the Cushing mic'ed up segment at halftime on MNF.

He was telling the trainer to go back and get him shoes that had cleats an inch higher. He had to tell the trainer twice what he wanted. Did anybody else catch this?

Please miss again, Brown.

Here are the pertinent changes in Wednesday's Injury Report:

Jones---------foot/groin (likely adductor tear)
Watt----------nose/groin (likely adductor tear)
Meyers-------biceps (not a good injury for a center)
Ed Reed------add abdomen to hip (developing a "sports hernia"?)
Foster--------add back again into the mix with thumb (I cautioned that those epidural back injections would likely be temporizing only)

It is very interesting to note that today's practice which is typically the only "contact" practice of the week, was simply a "jog-through." The troops must be quite banged up for the decision to withhold contact. "Full Practice" evidently means very little, other than those players were probably not in wheel chairs.

ah crap, brooks has been just about the lone bright spot on the line so far. with jones having to cover for wade smith and our rookies on IR, we dont have the depth for these injuries.

Duane Brown was all smiles in the locker room after practice Thursday. After missing two games this season, the All-Pro left tackle was a full-go at practice.

“I am happy,” Brown said. “I feel great, man. I feel great. It was a really good feeling to go out there and go full speed, take a lot of reps. It felt good.”

Brown has been dealing with a strained toe he suffered in the Texans’ home opener against Tennessee on September 15. Brown was in a walking boot until September 26, when he participated in practice for the first time since his injury, but was not quite ready to return.

“It just didn’t feel as good as I thought it would,” Brown said. “Moving around when you are out there on your own, felt pretty good just moving around but then when it came time to try and drive, block, and things like that, it just didn’t feel quite as strong as I thought it would. So, we just wanted to take it easy and be sure.”
Now with another week of rest, Brown feels ready to play at San Francisco. While he may still have some lingering effects, Brown no longer has the constant pain that he had before.

“Game-time is going to be different but I don’t think anybody is ever playing at 100-percent,” Brown said. “Very rarely, at this point in the season, are people really 100-percent. You know, you’re going to deal with something but as long as you’re productive while you’re out there, then I think that’s all that matters.”

Andre Johnson, still dealing with soreness in his shin, was limited in practice Thursday.

“Yeah, his leg’s still sore,” head coach Gary Kubiak said. “Moved around a little bit yesterday, he took a little bit today.”

The All-Pro wide receiver, who took a knee to the shin in Baltimore and left in the third quarter, was also limited in practice last week but was able to fully participate by Friday.

On Wednesday, Johnson had a rest day and did not participate during the team's light jog-through practice. With veteran players, Kubiak often institutes a rest day during the week.

“Just working through the soreness and also kind of a part of the protocol that we follow with him, where he’s a limited practicing guy right now anyways with what we are doing,” Kubiak said.

It would appear that the Texans are bad at math and can't get the decimal point in the right spot.

It's a fine line to dance between playing a guy and resting him, but this early in the season, caution should be paramount. You want your guys healthy and ready for the postseason.

“We had a made a decision,” Kubiak said. “Wade’s coming off his knee and he was playing a ton of snaps. I think this is bull. Would have been nice to see the "precautionary" measure before Sunday. Would have been nice to hear about it before the game. As we got neither, I believe this is Kubiak speak for, "We benched his a55 because he sucks!!"

He's found himself in a situation where he needs BenJones on the right side & don't want to tell everyone, "We've got no choice but continue to play Smith on the left side."

We could have saved $5M against the cap had we cut him, started Ben Jones (Q was the first choice) then get Menkins ready to play. Wade doesn't have it & hasn't had it for a few yeas now (imo)... pro bowl.. pfft, it was Andre Caldwell's name on the ballot, not Wade Smith's, but they gave Smith the votes.

Whatever your opinion of Smith prior to this year, Kubiak's recent statements make sense..............but the "precaution" should have been taken into consideration way earlier, prior to letting him back onto the field. His rehab period for the type of injury he sustained was obscenely short. Let me remind everyone..........this was a "minor" knee injury that turned into a severe knee BONE BRUISE.:

Houston (CBS Houston) – The Houston Texans returned to practice this morning after an impressive showing in their first preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, but concern came over the team quickly as it looks as if left guard Wade Smith’s injury might be worse than originally thought.

Smith wasn’t at practice all last week due to a knee bruise injury
and was replaced in the Texans’ preseason opener against the Viking’s last Friday by second-year veteran Ben Jones.

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said Monday morning that the team will reevaluate Smith, “The knee swell up on him and had a big bone bruise. (It) hasn’t responded the last few days the way we wanted it. We’re re-evaluating him; having some other people look at it. I’ll have more for you probably this afternoon or tomorrow morning.”
link

The next day, he was taken to surgery, and brought back to full action way too soon (3 1/2 weeks). I've chronicled very detailed implications of a true bone bruise in the Wade Smith injury thread after it happened.

When the term "shin bruise" was put out there, we waited for word on AJ to find out if he had a severe soft tissue "bruise" or a true "bone bruise," and it was eventually revealed that is was not a bone bruise, but only a severe soft tissue bruise. Even though AJ is still suffering its effect, the long-term implications of such an injury are much different. Damage of the internal matrix of the involved bone from bone bruise is naturally progressive, especially if not given sufficient time to heal. Internal bone healing is a slow process which is easily corrupted with continued trauma.

One may, for whatever reason, not be all that impressed with Smith's past performance, but his severe bone bruise injury and how it has been handled, has undoubtedly made a significant negative contribution this season.

I agree with that. Just don't believe Kubiak's explanation at this time. What you said, was before the season started. If he was worried about Wade, if he wanted to keep him healthy, or "be smart" with him, he would have been rotating him from the beginning of the season.

Wade's been struggling all year long.

No disagreement here at all. The "precaution".............too little too late.:handshake:

Per Kubiak:

Brooks and Dobbins are OUT for Sunday.

Brown and Cushing are IN. I would be surprised if Brown looks like Brown out there.

When talking about AJ, he said AJ is IN.........but he was very tentative about his actual condition saying he is still working through his problem........sounds like AJ could still be compromised out there Sunday.

Might not be a bad idea to get Willis chasing RBs & TEs in the passing game. Stretch that groin out a bit.

AJ:

(on if he re-aggravated his shin or is he still recovering from the initial injury) “No, I’m just recovering from the initial injury. I banged it up a little bit in the game last week. It had swollen back up again. It’s still sore and stuff like that. What we did last week worked out real well as far as me being able to play. We just went with the same routine this week.”
