THE NFL DRAFT MOCK I W/Comments

Blake

MMQB
Current Draft Order W/Trades and assuming all Jr's come out.

1 Arizona(f/GB) - Matt Leinart QB

GreenBay trades out of #1 due to Rogers, and picks
up Arizona's #1 pick in 2007. Green has never been
happy with either of his QB's, and gets the best prospect
to come along in years.

2 San Francisco(f/HOU) - Reggie Bush RB

Head coach Mike Nolan has decided to jump up and take what
he thinks is the best offensive weapon in the draft. Hoping
that his WR's step up, he goes with Bush to help out his QB.
Mike gives up his 1st, and 2nd round picks this year, and 3rd round pick
next year.

3 Tennessee - D'Brickashaw Ferguson OT

With their other bookend tackle (Hopkins) going this off-season,
the Titans are forced to restock with Ferguson.

4 New Orleans - A.J. Hawk OLB

mario Williams would be the pick here, if they didnt have Smith,
Howard, and Grant at DE. So they go for the best OLB in the draft
to bolster their linebacker core.

5 New York Jets - Haloti Ngata DT

The jets really wanted to trade up for Leinart, but dont pull the
trigger. The jets see how their run defense suffered without Jason
Ferguson, so they opt for the 6'5" 338 LBS Haloti Ngata.

6 Baltimore - Mario Williams DE

A good pickup by the Ravens, Mario can be tried at both DE, and OLB
like Suggs. He has a monster frame at 6'7" and 285 LBS.

7 GreenBay - Mathias Kiwanuka DE

Mathias will have an easy first few years with offenses focusing
on Kabeer. This will give GB pressure from both sides, making the DT's
and MLB's jobs easier.

8 Tampa Bay(f/HOU) - Eric Winston OT

Gives up their 2005 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, to select the LT from Miami.
Steusie didnt work out, and Walker had his shot in years past. So
Tampa rolls the dice.

9 Miami - Jimmy Williams CB

Miami has a big drop off at CB, after Sam Madison who will not play
forever. This is a good pickup, and will solidify the #1, #2 CB spot.

10 Detroit - Ahmad Brooks ILB

With Boss, and Teddy at the OLB spots, Ahmad Brooks gives them a solid
linebacking core. They will probably go with a WR at this spot though. ;)

11 Philadelphia(F/CLE) - Santonio Holmes WR

Ding dong T.O. is gone, wich T.O.? The baby T.O. McNabb can be a great
QB, but he needs WR's who can play, and keep their mouths shut. Gives up
their 2nd next year, and 4th this year to move up.

12 Buffalo - DeMeco Ryans OLB

Finally back in the first round. Feels good. Buffallo gets a football player.
With all the pieces in place on offense, defense is the only place to go. And
OLB looks like the weak link.

13 Minnesota - Marcedes Lewis TE

It might be a little crowded at the TE spot, but im sure Minn can make room
for Lewis.

14 Oakland - Chad Greenway OLB

Oakland is still struggling to get back to the playoffs. And when BPA is a
linebacker, its an easy choice for them.

15 St. Louis - Michael Huff CB/S

Another easy pick. St. Louis has been looking to upgrade their secondary. And
Huff can go CB, or S.

16 New England - Laurence Maroney RB

You can see what happens to NE, when their workhorse goes down. Even though NE
would love to take a player like Carpenter, they have to fill a need as well.

17 Cleveland - Gabe Watson DT

After clevelands d-line garage sale, the browns have to restock. This is a little
high for him, but they dont want to trade down, and possibly lose him.

18 San Diego - LaRon Landry S

Can play both safetly positions, which is just where the Bolts can use a player.
He has decent size, and can make plays.

19 Chicago - Leonard Pope TE

A big need for this squad. Will be a big target for the QB for the bears.

20 Houston - Joe Thomas OT

A monster at times, Joe is rapidly shooting up the chart. With the poor play by
Wand, Wade, and Riley, the Texans hand is forced, and pull the trigger on Thomas.
With the trade downs, the Texans have picked up enough picks to counter the 3 years
of bad trades, and pick selections. ;)

21 Jacksonville - Deangelo Williams RB

Fred Taylor is done in my book. Williams will split with Greg Jones, for a great
one two punch.

22 Kansas City - Chad Jackson WR

Still searching for that ever elusive #1 wideout. What a bad year to be doing so.

23 Dallas - Max Jean-Gilles OG

Dallas has 2 oldies holding down the guard spots. Im pretty sure one will be done
soon.

24 Denver (f/WAS) - Rodrique Wright DT

Still looking for a few good men, down on that D-line.

25 Carolina - Vernon Davis TE

Carolina has been having trouble filling the TE position with a good player. Chris
Mangum is hurt, and there is no depth.

26 Seattle - Bobby Carpenter OLB

A constant need for the Seahawks. Lets hope he can stay on the field a whole year.

27 Atlanta - Jonathan Scott OT

A great pick by the Falcons. Mike Vick will be loving this pick the most.

28 Pittsburgh - Thomas Howard OLB

Another weapon for the blitzburg Steelers. Might even go higher.

29 Denver - Vince Young QB

Denver gambles with their 2nd first round pick, and selects the mobile, but sometimes
errand pass Vince Young. He will sit for a year or so, and then Denver will give him
the reigns.

30 New York Giants - Darnell Bing S

The giants are a little thin at safety, and could use a player like Bing to pick up
this secondary.

31 Cincinnati - Tamba Hali DE

Still workin on that defense. A good pick this late in round one. SHould benefit from
Justin Smith being on the other side.

32 Indianapolis - Davin Joseph OG

The loses last offseason are felt, and need to be replaced.

=========================================
Houston has: the rest of the draft.

round 1 #20: Joe Thomas OT
round 2 #34: D'Qwell Jackson ILB
round 2(f/SF) #40: Marcus McNeill OT
round 2(f/TB) #52: A.J. Nicholson OLB
round 3 #65: Orien Harris DT
round 3 #67: Charles Spencer OG
round 3(f/SF) #72: Joseph Addai RB
round 3(f/TB) #84: Skyler Green WR

i have to agree i can see trading down 1 time but not out of the top 10 without getting alot more for. For us not getting 1 of the top 3-4 OL in the draft with our o-line is unthinkable. IMO

joe thomas will not fall to 20 if he declaers, but chances are he wont declare as of this point. Not a bad mock, but i like mine better. You fill almost all of the needs, but with players who shouldnt be the BPA at their respective position.

Trading down is not a good idea. Take the TOP LT!!

No way we trade out of the top 10...and no way Young would come out and get picked that late. Nice effort though.

agreed, VY Just told the coaches he's coming back. Saw it after the Baylor game. Can't sourse it but it's out there.

Won't say anything nasty, but Good God aren't we depressed enough !!
Nice effort, go back to the drawing board. Anything less than an Impact LB
or a can't miss OLT is a waste of bandwidth.

You dont feel like he is, or will be one of the top 3-4 O-linemen in the draft?

I just felt like getting an extra 2nd and 3rd is worth more than Eric Winston.

Eric Winston
vs.
Joe Thomas
AJ nicholson
Skyer Green

i like the idea of trading down, but i dont agree with how you went about it. we dont need to trade down that far, or even close. we should not even trade out of the top 5.

Why in the world would any GM worth his salt categorically decide not to trade out of the top 5?--the issue is what is offered in exchange. Funny how folks think the Texans got fleeced by the Titans but act like trading down to far or out of the 1st round is universally a bad idea no matter the price--that just doesn't make sense. By the value chart, moving from #1 to #11 would be worth an extra 2, 3 and 4 this year plus 1st and 2nd rounders next year or some similar package. That would be huge for the development of the Texans--#11 this year (still bound to have an LT available) plus 2 2nds, 3 rds and 2 4ths, plus two 1sts and two 2nds next year. The Texans would be nuts not to do that IMO.

Historically the quality of the player drops off rapidly after the top 10. We traded a late first to the Titans.

esentually you are saying a team will trade us the rest of their draft this year, and the first part of their draft next year to move up 10 spots? no one would turn that down, but at some time the Texans need to take the sure pick, the best available and not take the risk on the development of another player.

I think it looks ok, but in my mind it's too early in the NFL season to be predicting the draft order and too early in the college season/offseason workouts to be predicting most of the top players at positions. I agree with many on here that we shouldn't/won't trade that far down in the draft, and Vince Young, if he comes out, won't fall that far. He will be in the top 10 if not top 5. I also think some of the other QBs coming out will get drafted high, and there are teams that need QBs. Brandon Jacobs from Bowling Green is a top candidate, Brady Quinn (like Young, if he comes out) would be a top 5-10 pick, and there are a few others that will likely be in the first round. It is a QB rich draft and there are several teams that need them (Arizona, Baltimore, NY Jets, Miami, Cleveland?, Detroit?, New Orleans?), many of which will already have relatively high picks to either take the best available QB at or to trade up to get Leinart.

I'll eat my shoes if Vernon Davis is drafted before Young. Heck, Matt Jones was drafted earlier than this projection...not gonna happen. I like DC Rock though....but I don't like this mock.

I understand that, I am just thinking of all the spots we need solid help on the team. For example, if we were looking at the 2004 and 2005 drafts for examples of player quality you could be looking at something like:

2004
#11 Jon Vilma ILB, Tommy Harris DT, Shawn Andrews T, Will Smith LB/DE
2nd round Ben Troupe TE, Tatum Bell or Julius Jones RB, Jake Grove C
2nd round Michael Boulware SS
3rd round Randy Starks DT
3rd round Chris Cooley TE, Matt Ware CB
3rd round Keyaron Fox LB, Travelle Wharton T
4th round Isaac Sopoaga DT, Kendyl Pope LB, Nathan Vasher CB
4th round Mewelde Moore RB, Ernest Wilford WR

2005
#12 Shawne Merriman
#24 Chris Spencer C, Luis Castillo DT, Heath Miller TE, David Baas C/G or Logan Mankins G
2nd round Lofa Tatupa ILB or Odell Thurman ILB
2nd round Khalif Barnes LT, Eric Shelton RB or Darrent Williams CB

All of that vs. Reggie Bush.

I know the talent is higher above #10 but really look just at last year for serious talent that went between #10 and #20--Demarcus Ware, Shawne Merriman, Jammal Brown, Derrick Johnson, David Pollack. Those guys aren't chopped liver.

I agree that if we get a huge stockpile of picks...we should go for it, but we better hit on those picks. I'd rather have one superstar than a bunch of average players (probably thinking of what Casserly will get with those picks)....Call me a Cassery cynic at this point.

This isnt a prediciton, its the current up to date order, if the draft started tomorrow.

Also, its a Mock, which is predicting players at positions, in a order.

To be honest guys, if it was me, I would have taken D'brick with the #2 pick, and just hope for the best.

But i figured we would see how things would go with a few trade downs. expecially since this year is loaded with elite prospects.

first for those of you who critize & never have tried to do a Mock, Lots of Luck trying to do a better one, for those of you who have you can understand the time and effort involved. I really like it for a couple of reasons-

1). DC does an excellent job introducing the football fan both new & experienced to alot of talented College football players your just not going to know about this early based on their respective talent and upsides.

2). View it more in the context of a Draft Board if you will, right now no one knows the precise draft order so who cares? lets get these names out there and discuss them, if you think its too early or premature stay off the NFL Draft threads until after the season, don't post here.

thank you- beerlover

This is our hot stove league. At 1-7 it's not too early. IMHO it's never too early to study the draft. If I was too harsh, I appologise. It's a great mock . I haven't done one in several years but you do a three round mock you get cross eyed by the end of it. Figuring out which team needs what and who they will draft where...it's an impossible job. I'm think if we ended up with the Hawk and a top prospect at OLT I would be very happy. If that scenario includes a feeding freenze over Bush and a trade down for exstra picks , I'm on board. I like our running backs. Moreover, I like their cap hit.But I also believe that Carr cannot continue to take the beating he has been taking. No one can. I thought the line did very well untill Hodgden went down. The only blemish on Pitts is he can't block Freeny. Just think we have enough warm bodies to make it to the play offs. What we need is to plug a couple of holes. Droping twice is a little too drastic for me. That's all.
