Foster, Joseph named to the Pro Bowl; 9 voted as alternates

HoustonTexans Houston Texans
Congrats to #Texans RB Arian Foster and CB Johnathan Joseph, who were selected as Pro Bowl reserves today.

NickScurfield Nick Scurfield
9 #Texans voted as alternates: OLB Barwin, LT D. Brown, ILB Cushing, TE Daniels, WR A. Johnson, KR J. Jones, C Myers, DE A. Smith, DE Watt

Myers and Cushing have legitimate gripes. Both should have been starters, and neither make the team. Soooo many made it on rep, it's embarrassing.

Duane Brown as well. Dude is an absolute monster. I'm sure James Harrison will vouch for that.

Yeah, it's a bit of a snub for Foster, really.

Ray Rice = 1869 yards from scrimage = 131 yards to break 2k in 15 games played.

Maurice Jones-Drew = 1807 yards from scrimage = 193 yards to break 2k in 15 games played.

Arian Foster = 1841 yards from scrimage = 159 yards to break 2k in 13.5 games played.

Ray Rice = 46.4 receiving yards per game = 9.4 average a catch.

Arian Foster = 47.5 receiving yards per game = 11.6 average a catch.

Am I being biased here, or is Arian Foster really the best running back in the game right now?

I knew Pouncey and Mangold were going to be tough to beat. But Cushing definitely got robbed because Lewis made it all based on rep. Cushing beat him out in basically every statistical category.

Duane Brown, Myers, Cushing, and Winston should at least be on the team IMHO.

I disagree about Winston. But Brown, Myers, Cushing should all be on the list. And Foster.

AJ doesn't belong on the list, sorry, he's been injured all year just about. He is pro bowl caliber whenever he takes the field, but it's not fair to suggest he has had that type of year.

The PB is such a joke theste days.

Duane Brown as well. Dude is an absolute monster. I'm sure James Harrison will vouch for that.

I agree. It's hard to judge lineman, so most of these guys make it based on rep. Thomas, Ferguson, and Long are all top 3 draft picks... so people will automatically think they're good. No one cares to really watch lineman play and judge who is really deserving.

Not only is Brown on the line for the #2 rushing offense in the league... but just looking at pure stats, he's allowed less sacks compared to Thomas, Ferguson, and Long. Not to mention less penalties than Thomas & Long.

I get that Eric has trouble against speed guys but he does not face a lot of them through out the season and he is a very good run blocker JMHO but no doubt about the other three though to each there own I don't care.

My issue with Winston is the number of penalities he draws, and the fact that he is suppose to protect his QB, and I don't think he's done a good job at that. He's to slow, lets to many guys beat him, and our QBs have paid the price.

Until they start making a right side distinction for tackles he is not going to make the pro bowl nor should he. The best of the best should be able to pass protect. He is half a tackle as far as I am concerned like a lot of right side guys. You have to bring more than run blocking to the table.

The only thing still going full speed on Ray Lewis is his mouth. He's not a Pro Bowl LB anymore. This is the classic case of making it one more year than you deserve to go.

The Shutdown Corner Hidden Pro Bowlers
By Doug Farrar, Yahoo Sports

Every Pro Bowl roster has its snubs, but we'd like to present this list more as the guys we think should be on there with the understanding that a ball of excellence at certain positions and the politics of popularity will have things going another way ... at the very least, consider this to be a list of players you should be watching out for in future seasons. The offense is below; we'll have the defense up presently.
...

Tight Ends - Scott Chandler, Buffalo Bills/Brent Celek, Philadelphia Eagles/Joel Dreessen, Houston Texans

...We'll take Dreessen as our red zone tight end, since we're pretty sure Rob Gronkowski is taken - that's what happens when you have six touchdowns in 36 targets. To put that achievement in perspective, Green Bay's Jermichael Finley has seven touchdowns … in 84 targets.

Left Tackle - Duane Brown, Houston Texans/Left Guard -Wade Smith, Houston Texans/Center - Chris Myers, Houston Texans

Since Philly's Jason Peters made the Pro Bowl (and Lord knows he should; he's been by far the best in the game at his position this year), we'll staff our roster of unheraldeds with the first of several Texans linemen. Brown is still getting the hang of the more advanced aspects of pass protection, but he's just mashing fools in the run game.

600 pounds of serious business
...

Safeties - Kam Chancellor, Seattle Seahawks/Reggie Nelson, Cincinnati Bengals/George Wilson, Buffalo Bills/Glover Quin, Houston Texans

I just disagree. How about Wade Smith then?

Ain't that the truth. I think the Ravens were unbeaten during that 4 game stretch he was out of the line-up. There were a lot of guys including Cushing who should have made it instead of Lewis. Lewis has been not just past his prime but over the hill for years.
I felt worst of all for Myers & Brown. Wonder if they could have been hurt by our ZB schemes which features the infamous cut-blocs ? Though of course they are legal, lots of NFL players have problems with that blocking technique and it remains very controversial among many of those players.

Scout.com:
...
AFC Offensive Tackles- Jake Long, Joe Thomas and D'Brickashaw Ferguson

The offensive line is really where the reputation selections begin to occur. All three of these players were drafted in the Top 5, but they certainly weren't the best in the AFC at their positons. Houston's Duane Brown, Oakland's Jared Veldheer and Tennessee's Michael Roos all had superior seasons to the players selected.
...
AFC Guards- Logan Mankins, Brian Waters and Marshal Yanda

Logan Mankins is purely a reputation pick as his season has been subpar. It's difficult to think Maurice Jones-Drew could lead the NFL in rushing without any of his linemen having an elite season. Jags guard Uche Nwaneri has been rock solid as has Houston's guard Wade Smith and Denver's Chris Kuper.
...
AFC Center- Maurkice Pouncey and Nick Mangold

It's very difficult to argue with Pouncey's selection as he has been excellent since his first day as a Steeler. Maurkice's twin brother Mike Pouncey has been very good in Miami, as has Chris Myers in Houston.

http://jac.scout.com/2/1142618.html

OLB Barwin, LT D. Brown, ILB Cushing, TE Daniels, WR A. Johnson, KR J. Jones, C Myers, DE A. Smith, DE Watt

Hope they come out Sunday with a chip on their shoulders and destroy the damn Titans and keep that grudge through out the playoffs.

Lame. Cush and Duane both deserve starting spots. I would have liked to have seen Barwin go too, he's really exceeded expectations this year (46 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 7 passes defended, and 1 FF). Then again, the "Pro Bowl" is not an "All-Pro" game - it's just a popularity contest.

Lewis has missed a few games. Cushing has 111 tackles vs Lewis' 88. Cushing has 2 more sacks. Cushing has 1 more interception. East coast media bias strikes again.

Neither Brown or Myers do a lot of cut blocking.

Brown usually mauls his man, front or backside. Chris is usually in the second level smacking LBs around.

I'd give anything to see the voting totals for the players & coachs ? I don't mean how individuals voted, but how many votes the top 3 or 5 players got per coach/player voting #s ?
And BTW as a person who doesn't particularly like UT because they basically wrecked the Big 12 by themselves IMO, I was still gratified to see former UT LB Derrick Johnson make the Pro Bowl squad. Got to see him a few times on national TV this year and he was exceptional. He was very deserving.
For the Texans, Myers really got the shaft, but it doesn't surprise me. I'm looking forward to the All-Pro teams voting ?

I don't think it's that he's too slow, I think it's that his arms are too short.

I still think if they could find a viable replacement (Butler?) he would be a beast of a guard.

On topic, I agree with the consensus that Brown, Myers, and Cushing were blatant snubs. And, on the other side of the coin, AJ was undeservedly voted in.

Let's all address the elephant in the room.

Jacoby Jones, KR, as an alternate, do they even watch games?

Not to defend Jacoby but who else in the AFC had a halfway decent return guy. They're all in the NFC.
Even Josh Cribbs had an off year as a return guy. I guess they could have voted him in (Cribbs) on rep alone....

I understand about the penalties, but consider the Texans are ranked #2 with rushes to the right side of 10+ yards (32x's). Your right tackle has a lot to do with that.

As does your right guard, which is where Winston should be playing.
Winston is a solid run-blocking OLineman, but not so much when it comes to pass-blocking which is very important for tackles, and not just left-tackles.

Ray Lewis, the player, is no longer Pro Bowl worthy. Ray Lewis, the name, is obviously a Pro Bowler for life.

Pro Bowl voting should be taken out of the hands of the fans. Until then, the game will always be a joke. Most fans are clueless

He was great at one time, but these days Lewis is basically a legend in his own mind and nothing more.
It's gonna be real interesting to see how they handle him back in Baltimore as his presence on the field more and more becomes a liability to the defense, to the team ? I don't think he's the kind of guy who's going to adjust gracefully to accepting fewer snaps, let alone being replaced as a starter ?

Duane Brown: Texans offensive line snubs a “slap in the face”

Every year, we re-learn how faulty the Pro Bowl voting process is.

Guys make the game on reputation like Cowboys defensive tackle Jay Ratliff and Dolphins tackle Jake Long. Other deserving young players have to wait their turn like 49ers linebacker Navorro Bowman.

Texans left tackle Duane Brown was one of the players that got overlooked because he doesn’t have a big name. He had a standout year and we’d argue that he was only one of three snubs on the Texans offensive line.

Chris Myers should have made it at center over Maurkice Pouncey. You could make a strong case*for right tackle Eric Winston and Brown over Long and the Jets’ D’Brickashaw Ferguson. Brown didn’t complain about his individual snub, and said he understood he hadn’t consistently had years this good in the past.

Still, he wasn’t pleased the entire group was overlooked.

“Definitely, it is a slap in the face,” Brown told Jerome Solomon of the Houston Chronicle. “I think we’re one of the best O-lines in the league, and for not one of us to make it says something. We already have a lot to prove, and this just adds to it.”

Brown and Myers were named as alternates. Winston congratulated them on Twitter without mentioning his snub.

He didn’t complain, so we will for him. Top to bottom, the Texans have the best line in the league.

He's still a great player and highly productive on the field when he plays...he just didn't deserve to go to the pro bowl, because he was injured.

But in 11 games he still had 88 tackles, 2 sacks, 6 pdef, 1 INT, and 2 FF

You project those #s over a 16 game schedule and it's right there with his career averages and a pro bowl season.

The guy has no business playing in the pro bowl this season, but lets not shovel dirt on him already. He's still highly productive and still makes plays.

Why is AJ even on there? He has missed what, 9 games now? I realize he's awesome and all, but pro-bowl voting is supposed to be for accomplishments during the current year. Someone else should be that alternate, not AJ. In the interest of his hamstrings, I hope he doesn't go anyways.

I agree with Mark Schlereth's take on this:

Fans are stupid, and so are the players. Let the coaches and GMs vote on this by themselves.

I agree. No awards for being in the tub. Give it to someone who suited up every game.

Phillips miffed by Cushing’s Pro Bowl snub
Posted by Nick Scurfield on December 28, 2011 – 3:15 pm

Texans inside linebacker Brian Cushing was left off the Pro Bowl roster on Tuesday, and Wade Phillips isn’t too happy about it.

Phillips, who returned to practice from a medical leave of absence on Wednesday, was beside himself about Cushing’s omission. After meeting with a crowd of reporters for a few minutes to discuss his health situation, the 35th-year NFL coach went out of his way to offer some unsolicited – and very passionate – comments about his playmaking inside linebacker.

“How Cushing didn’t make the Pro Bowl is beyond me,” Phillips said. “I mean, the guy’s got at least 160, 180 tackles by our count, which is coach’s count, which is the correct count. It’s not off the game where somebody sees – they don’t see how many plays he makes that are unseen unless you go back and you put the camera on it and you slow it down and you go in slow motion, he’s there going to be to make a play. I know a lot of people are deserving, but that guy is a holy phenom, now. He’s one of the best I’ve coached. I’ve been in it a long time. So, that’s my say-so.”

Going by Stats, Inc., Cushing officially has 110 tackles this season. That’s still 38 more than his next-closest teammate, safety Glover Quin. Cushing has more solo tackles (74) – again, according to Stats, Inc. – than Quin has overall (72). One has to wonder how much bigger the discrepancy is on Phillips and Reggie Herring’s stat sheets.

Cushing was one of nine Texans players who were chosen as Pro Bowl alternates, meaning they still could end up in the game if the players picked ahead of them drop out.

UPDATE: Here’s Cushing from the locker room on Wednesday afternoon, on if he’s disappointed about not being selected to the Pro Bowl: “Yeah, I am. I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t. I play this game to be the best and I’m never going to hide that. It only means one thing, there’s room for improvement. Obviously, they don’t think I’m good enough yet and I’ll continue to do it. As far as motivation and a driving force, this is going to be a big one.”
