How Much Are You Willing to Give Up for Von or Patrick?

whats too much, whats reasonable?

im willing to do:
1)swap 1st's
2)this years 2nd
3)next years 2nd

--nothing more. would this get it done, i dont know but thats all im willing to give up.

Isn't that similar to how we got Schaub? I do recall giving up a few 2nd rounders for him?

I remember not having 2 2nd rounders for a while and I recall it hurting us a bit. However, it's the price this regime is going to have to pay because they need to be in the playoffs or they will be looking for another job.
 
I dont really like trading that many draft picks to move up 4-7 spots. These are, after all, rookies. And no rookie is a sure thing. Id prefer to use the picks to get proven vets if we're going to be putting out that kind of expense
 
I agree with gtexan02 and ATXtexanfan. One only needs to see how San Diego panned out with Ryan Matthews and we need an improved team. We aren't just one player away like some other teams are.

Draft sleeper: Baldwin-Wallace pass rusher Keith Darbut

We’ve been tracking pre-draft visits and workouts since early March, and one of the lesser-known names receiving a noticeable amount of interest is Baldwin-Wallace defensive end Keith Darbut.

Darbut was the D-3 Ohio Athletic Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2010, recording 10.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles. He also caught a 40-yard touchdown pass on offense.

And Darbut’s measurables are eye-opening.

Darbut participated at the Akron Pro Day on March 10. Measuring in at 6-foot-4 and 229 pounds, the 22-year-old Baldwin-Wallace team captain ran forty times of 4.38 and 4.40 with a 1.42 ten-yard split that would’ve bested all pass rushers at the Combine.He also recorded a 10-foot-6 broad jump and 38-inch vertical, benching 225 pounds 26 times.

Darbut was invited to Akron’s Pro Day because Baldwin-Wallace defensive coordinator Jim Meyer has a connection to the school: Meyer was the Zips’ defensive ends coach when Jason Taylor played at Akron.

PFT contacted Meyer on Wednesday. The longtime coach wouldn’t quite call Darbut the next Jason Taylor, but acknowledged some similarities between the small-school prospect and NFL’s 2006 Defensive Player of the Year.

“The comparison that I’d make is that their ceilings were really high (coming out of college),” said Meyer. “It’s not gonna be an overnight thing. (Darbut) could be two-thirds of Jason Taylor. Because he has tools. … But somebody’s gotta see that. He has a high ceiling.”

Meyer revealed to PFT that Darbut ran a 4.32 forty during a recent private workout for the Colts.

Per the ProFootballTalk Visits and Workouts Tracker, Darbut has also worked out for the Ravens and Giants, the Dolphins on March 24, and Jaguars on April 18. He had an official, team-facility with the Browns. Considering Darbut’s workout numbers, it’s probably safe to suspect Oakland has interest, too.

Draft websites generally grade Darbut as a priority free agent, but say his stock is on the rise. At 6’4″ and about 230, he projects as an outside linebacker in 3-4 schemes and a potential nickel-rushing end in 4-3 defenses.

Way too much to pay for a guy that could be the next Aaron Curry or Maybin in Miller.

Especially when you are sure to get someone like Bowers, Fairley, or Prince A falling into your lap
 
we did give up 2 second rounders for schaub.

i think peterson is worth it, im not sold on von miller.

patrick is the best player in the draft, and hes not the 1st pick because of his position. the guy is a physical beast, like a.j but on defense.

sounds like you guys arent sold on the trade up scenario.

Kubiak has mentioned that moving Quin to safety is a real possibility. The official McMouthpiece of the Texans has said that the Texans will move Quin to safety if they can get a CB in the draft and/or FA. Further, many scouts feel that Peterson's best position is at safety.

So, essentially, advocating for drafting Peterson is advocating for an upgrade at safety no matter how it happens.

I agree with you on the need to upgrade safety, so I have always been on-board with trading up for Peterson. I was on the fence on Miller until I heard Greg Cosell's podcast. Now I am on-board with trading up for him too. Add in the Aldon Smith rumors and I'm desperate for a trade-up for one of those two.

id also throw in a 3rd if it the choice was between peterson or aldon

The 2 2nds and switching spots is about the right value.

I would trade up in a heartbeat. For either Peterson or Miller. Peterson is about as sute a thing as a rookie as there is.

I'm for signing Taylor in FA and trading up for Peterson. Tayor/Quin/Allen or Nolan /Peterson would be a huge upgrade in the secondary. You could also draft a pass rushing OLB in the 3rd like Chris Carter or Dontay Moch.

Do you believe the Texans defense can be fixed in 1 offseason/draft? I dont thnk so. The LB corps in the 2012 draft is deep. Pass rusher like Burfict, Keenan Robinson or Travis Lewis could be drafted next yr. If Carter/Moch etc... dont workout.

But by trading up for Perterson and signing Taylor atleast the secondary would be fixed. (for the 1st time since the Texans inception.) Also if Peterson didn't workout at CB. He has the size/speed to be an all-pro S. (Sean Taylor ability)
 
I'd trade up for either one of them. Really I don't care what we have to give up. We have never been to the play-offs and we don't have one star player on defense that consistently shows up...

I'm pretty desperate for some talent. Counting on a bunch of rookies to play key roles doesn't excite me. I'd rather trade up take a stud, and rely on vets to fill the other roster spots.

Who is to say Quin is an answer at safety? Just because you move someone somewhere doesn't mean it is a solution.

Give me a guy who is a specialist safety over trying to crowbar a corner into a safety spot.

I have had the fortune of seeing Darbut in action and.....

not worth more than the Mr. Irrelevant pick. You know how people say player X is more athlete than football player? That embodies Darbut. He is a phenomenal athlete, but is just not a great player. At the D3 level, he should have torn it up. However, his stats are quite underwhelming.

He needs at least 20 lbs and a good positioning coach, and even then it is hit or miss.

No we dont. Quin has basically been moved to safety already so that leaves Jackson and more garbage at CB.

Why? Someone please explain to me what makes Peterson such a great prospect other than his physical abilities. And dont say because he is a good returner either. You dont draft a CB that high to play him on special teams. To much chance of injury.

When he faced top WR's he didnt exactly shut them down. To be the top player in the entire draft He would have to be a shutdown corner. He is not. Very good prospect, great athlete but not even close to being the best player in this draft.

No way would I make that trade giving up our 2nds this year and next. The "value" might be in lign with the trade chart but that one player (Peterson or Miller) would not be more valuable than the players we could get otherwise.

Neg rep me if you want or throw haterade at me but I don't think the dropoff from Von Miller to say, Brooks Reed is that staggering. Don't get me wrong, I love Miller and he's one of my favorite players in this draft. I'd love it if he were on this team but he's not the can't miss prospect everyone makes him out to be. I don't think he's the one guy that's going to push this 2011 team over the edge and into an elite defense. I'd rather have Brooks Reed, Davon House AND a 2012 2nd round pick than Von Miller. Same goes for Peterson, I would absolutely love to have him but I don't think trading up is in the best interest of the team right now.

The thing about Schaub is that the QB position holds a premium and he is much more able to impact the game. We needed a big turnaround and Schaub was an excellent candidate to immediately help this team. Dropped to the 3rd round because of an injury in college, was a backup QB in the NFL for 3 years, got exposure in several games so there was film on him against teams, he showed the ability to understand an NFL playbook... that's much much more safe than an unproven rookie and someone who has just as much upside if not more.
 
I think you only allow yourself to trade up if you have a philosophy of stock-piling picks and you have excess picks at the time.
