Pretty understandable why the Cowboys Stadium didn't have to deal with blackouts.
To be honest, I wasn't surprised that it was granted continuous power for a lot of reasons.
I just found the story interesting as a football fan and I can also understand why many local residents are not too happy about it. Seeing power for a 60 yard wide tv over basic heat for residents during a blizzard does seem like misplaced priorities.
I still don't get why the stadium doesn't have it's own backup power source, especially considering the price tag for that thing.

Seems kind of logical to me. The expense would be huge and let's face it, it is a non-essential facility that only gets used a few times a year (unless you made it part of a plan for some sort of emergency contingency). Heck that might be a reason they didn't put generators in - so it doesn't get used and abused in an emergency.

Some PR stunt? If that's how they want to look at it so be it but there is no telling how many millions and millions of dollars this week and little PR stunt is bringing to the city of Dallas.
Completely understandable to me not to shut the power off to the stadium. Not using the giant jumbotron until the actual superbowl I can understand but getting worked up over keeping the power on at the stadium doesn't make too much sense to me.
It sucks peoples power is out at their home, I do feel bad for them. But if this happened at Reliant and we were having the Super Bowl, then it wouldn't bother me... even if my power was out. Probably a bunch of people who don't like organized sports or the traffic anyways. The City is receiving so much income from this though, just put up and shut up.

They had to finish the game under back-up generators/power.

.....or anywhere with money. I live near river oaks....never even a blip on the power. Was in the heart of the woodlands too, they didn't even know WHY there were statewide rolling power breaks. I know this is hard to swallow for some folks but that makes it no less true, people with money are taken care of first. Same for when IKE blew through, my power (and all the rich anuses living around me) was on the next day. Took two weeks to get it back on around Airline (where I work) is.

1) Homeland security issues.
2) That the power surge of repowering would use more energy than it saved (btw, I heard this is true in other high usage areas).
FWIW, this stadium is used at least twice as much as Reliant. Jerry is keeping that place busy. Anyway from what I understand, the backup generation is just to keep normally essential items on versus everything.
Just to Note: I stay about 5 to 6 miles from the Stadium and did not get a rolling balckout on yesterday. Obviously, today is still in limbo.

Or maybe the freezes weren't as bad in Houston? I live in DFW, and the really rich neighborhoods in the areas I live near got their power cut off like everyone else. Maybe the people in The Woodlands were using less power or something?
Yeah, Bob McNair needs to work on getting more events hosted in Houston. He does a poor job there also.

It's hardly bringing in anything to Arlington. The City of Arlington foot the bill for the stadium, while Dallas gets all the publicity for having the stadium, even though it isn't even in Dallas. The Arlington Mayor is actually mad about it. He and the city leaders thought the stadium would bring in a lot of investment into Arlington. Instead, nothing has changed, except a few businesses closed when they were building the stadium and reconstructing I-30 near the stadium.

I mean it's possible but it's still kinda f'd that the areas with more money had to suffer less. Or not at all.
Side note: Not that 20 degrees is normal or anything but that's not like...a HARD freeze is it? I mean I turned on the faucets to be safe but it's not THAT cold. I think the coldest I've been in is single digits in D.C., never been in below zero (although I've been to places that go that low) and I've only seen snow and handful of times, twice in Texas. People from up north think that is really, really strange.
Sound system/seating at TC is a million times better for concert events. Reliant isn't even close. If I'm a big act and I'm not playing at the rodeo, it's gonna be at the TC.
Actually 20 degrees ( it has been as low 13 degrees) in Texas is pipe breaking weather. Normally don't have any days that cold in a given year, much less three to four days barely getting above 20.

I believe the city's convention bureau is largely the group responsible for getting large events into the city, and thus in the stadium. Things like the super bowl, olympics, final 4, ,etc etc. Sure maybe Bob could do more than we think he is.... but it's really the city's convention bidness that needs to step it up.

Yeah, but there are more potential events than just concerts. For example, Jerry Jones went out and courted boxing matches and different sporting events to be held at his stadium. Why hasn't Bob McNair went out and courted boxing matches (looks like the Dynamo Stadium will host these thanks to Oscar De La Hoya). Bob McNair needs to be on the phone with schools like Texas or A&M and LSU and try and get an annual matchup started in his stadium, in Houston (like Jones does). Jones is just a better business man than McNair. No doubt.

You have to remember that some of those people have automatic generators. I knew a guy who never even knew that power went out during Ike. He claimed that most of his neighbors's lights stayed on so it never occured to him that the power actually went out. Fyi, he was one of those without power for a week or so.
Contrary to what you may believe, McNair does not have total control of Reliant.

Yup!! There's a tiny little entity that actually uses more dates per year and draws way more people that share the venue with uncle Bob.
Texans: 10 dates with an average tickets sold 70,000 = 700,000
HLSR: 21 dates with an average (roughly and conservatively) 60,000 = 1,260,000 (and that doesn't include the Carnival, Cook-off or Fat stock show).

iirc we hosted a regional final a few years ago. This year it's the big one.
Maybe the Horns will make it. They could conceivably have a regional in San Antonio and the final in Houston. That's one heck of a home court advantage. That would be a blast for some of us anyway.

I know about the Final Four this year (and 2016) and that Texas played Rice (Rice!) last year, but that's not the point.
Look at the Cowboys Stadium schedule and then Reliant Stadium's schedule and you'll see what I mean. And Texas needs to play a better team than Rice. That's why I said LSU. They simply do a better job of attracting more (and higher profile) college football games, more concerts, boxing events, etc., at Cowboys Stadium than Reliant. All I was saying. I mean, it could be just because Cowboys Stadium is still pretty new, but I wish Reliant hosted better college football games.
