Has made it official he is entering the 2011 NFL Draft.
I will be a Wisconsin Badger for life, but at this time I have made the decision to enter the 2011 NFL Draft.

This is a really easy pick for me to project #11 for the Texans, ideal measureables @ 6-6 292 along with Mario Williams would give the Texans a great looking pair of DE's.
Jan. 6, 2011

MADISON, Wis. -- Defensive end J.J. Watt announced Thursday he will forgo his final season of college eligibility and enter the NFL draft. Watt was named the 2010 Lott IMPACT Trophy winner, earned second-team All-America honors and was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection after leading the Badgers and ranking third in the country with 21.0 tackles for loss this season.

Watt announced his decision in an open letter to UW fans.

Open Letter to Badger Fans:

First and foremost, I would like to say that my time at the University of Wisconsin has been unbelievable and it has far surpassed anything that I ever could have imagined. I would also like to thank Coach Bielema and the entire coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play for my home-state team, as well as helping me to succeed both in the classroom and on the field at the highest level possible.

This has, without a doubt, been one of the most difficult decisions of my life, and it is one that was not reached quickly, or easily. At this time, I have made the decision to enter the 2011 NFL Draft. It has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember to play in the National Football League, and through hard work and dedication, that dream finally has a chance to become a reality.

I will be a Wisconsin Badger for life and am forever grateful for all of the love and support that the fans, administration and community have shown to my family and I during my time in Madison. I could not have asked for better coaches to play for, better teammates to play alongside, or a better fan base to represent throughout my collegiate career.

I just want to say thank you again to everyone who has helped me to reach this point in my life, as I would not be here today if it wasn’t for an unbelievable amount of support from my family, friends, teachers, coaches and teammates. While I am closing an extremely enjoyable chapter of my life, I am also beginning a new chapter and am very much looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead.

As I move forward with my life, I will continue to live by the morals and values that have helped to get me where I am today. I am very excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for both myself and for the JJ Watt Foundation, as we try to spread the message to kids that if you “Dream Big and Work Hard,” anything is possible.

On Wisconsin!

I've never projected a Texans pick this early, which concerns me, however be certain the kid can play & fit into Wade Phillips defensive overhaul of our Houston Texans.

Watt is definitely in the mix for the Texans @ 11. Guy plays hard and comes from a solid program. High motor, high energy. Just might not be BPA when the Texans run up their card.

I would not be upset if the Texans pick Watt. Good player, solid player, very low bust potential. The more I watch, the more I like.

With all due respect SM, it is very possible Watt is in the mix for BPA when the Texans pick rolls around. He is perfect 3-4 DE size, has room to get better, is already pretty good, etc. Also, depending how the draft goes, the elite talents at positions the Texans really need (NT, DBs) may already be gone. And while I know some like the idea of grabbing another WR, I am not so sure. Blackmon, Jones and Green all give me the prima donna vibe.

watt may well be the bpa at 11, but i feel with williams, okoye, smith and mitchell 3-4 de is not a high priority. we really need a pass rushing olb. i feel like cushing is better suited inside and barwin may not be 100%.

We have him ranked at 32 on our big board. Taking out offensive players he is the 17th best defender according to us. But I will agree that things will change and who knows 3 months from now. And as I said, he will be in the mix, but probably not BPA.

Agreed. We need the 3-4 OLB pass rusher, and the NT. Not very many NT's in this draft, so it could be OLB by default.

Draft is fluid though. Fact is Watt is a prototypical 3-4 DE. Strong, quick, smart, hardworking, etc. He has upside, and relatively high floor. I see him flying up the boards come April.

Thats what this is about, talking, and disagreeing. I love the debates with you all on this section. I have been absent a bit more than usual because class is becoming a pain, and I needed a break from the board (with all the negativity), but I am getting back into posting.

Now that JJ Watt has declared, draft boards will adjust his stock upwards, I put him in our draft board to float his name out there to increase awareness so my fellow board members are down from the start. I'm thrilled rmartin65 agree's & in fact put him in his january mock as Texans #1 selection. My only worry is if he will still be on the board #11? He is in the mix of picks 6-11, Texans need some luck (take Andrew too) may consider moving up to address DL for Wade Phillips if he is his guy?

Texans are out of range now for either Nick Fariley/Marcell Darius (1-5 range). They also need a NT but will have to wait for the 2nd rd. or hopefully address this position with a proven 3-4 NT like 49ers FA Aubrayo Franklin. If Wade Phillips can come in here & nail these two needs it will help the secondary automatically plus they have rest of the draft/FA to address safety/cb position.

Did I mention he also fits the all important Texans criteria of selecting TE's? Yes he also played some TE, a state champion in Track & Field shot put, lettered in Basketball & Baseball too so the all around athlete applies which is a common trait of great DE's.

Phillips has said that he thinks he can turn one of our DTs into a good NT.

I think we are better off at DE than NT so I don't see us forcing a pick at NT or DE.

I think you'll see Smithiaklips working hard to fill any 'holes' in FA so they can draft BPA.

That would be ideal - sign a NT and FS in FA, possibly another CB and then just draft BPA (excluding QB, HB, P/K, TE, FB) if it is a OLB or DE - great. But if it is a WR or T that would be fine as well.

After last nights bowl game I'm starting to back off Miller and am warming to Watt or Aldon Smith at # 11.

The Texans could use a relentless player on the DL.

No more OkOye,MW,Smith type guys that dont go full bore on every play.

Wat fills this requirement.

It's early, I keep telling myself but felt compelled to start a Watt thread since he would be a foundation piece in Wade Phillips Texan adaptation of a 3-4. I think starting with the Cowboys selecting 9th Watt could come off the board? Next up is Washington, once by them we could secure JJ but they too have DL issues plus it's always a possibility another team covets him to be their 3-4 DE & make a serious move up to aquire him? Just don't know yet, will have to wait until the combine & see how he responds to the marketplace :kitten:

BL is amazing.

Watt has great work ethic, non-stop motor, size to hold edge & create pass rushing lanes for LB's. He also has vesatility to bump inside in four man front.

Amobi Okoye's day's may be numbered.

Somebody hit this man with some rep. I've got to spread it around.

Did anyone see the WTF look Saban had when Carpenter went to the Hawks? Hilarious. I coudlnt believe he let that look last so long on his face. Even the guys around him were like WTF, James???

To be honest in the last few days leading up to the draft my sources indicated Cowboys were taking a hard look @ JJ Watt with the 9th pick. So I was happy to see they stuck with Tyron Smith who I had called their #1 guy over a month ago. Sometimes its better to be lucky than good, thanks for all the positive feedback :)

interesting ranking of the 2011 NFL Draft DE prospects. As Texans move into their new scheme Watt makes even more sense because of course the Texans #1 DE is Mario Williams who trumps anyone on this list. Wade coming home to Houston is the best thing ever for Mario, Watt, Texans D & Texan followers everywhere. This is a perfect example how you adjust for BPA strategy, cause even if Cameron was rated higher, Watt fit better because it allowed Williams to achieve his destiny :mario:

notice Brooks is not even listed as a DE anymore (#3 OLB) & Cheta Ozougwu is ranked 24th. quite a haul ladies & gents.

Question, if Mario is not a Texan after this next year, does DE or OLB become our #1 dire need for 2012 draft? I know it's early and I guess the best scenario in that case is for Barwin and Brooks Reed to be terrific as OLBs.

Barwin should be 100% while Brooks with one year under his belt, good to go. So I would say no. Also we need to see how CB, Safety & NT positions pan out.

Even if Keo is successful, I'd lean towards another SS in 2012 and an ILB pretty high up. If JJ not on roster we have to get another WR also. Seems like Walter's prdouction is down. Not usre if it is a thing between him an Matt or what.

I think there's a better than average chance that we'll franchise Mario as an OLB after next season. The Texans are going to want to see more than one year of quality production from any player at a new position before offering him a very expensive FA contract. If we were to lose Mario to FA after next season I don't think it makes DE or OLB our highest priority since we just picked up Watt and Brooks. Mario leaving would leave us very thin at those positions and they would need to be addressed in the draft but probably only in the 3rd-5th rounds, quality depth. I see NT, FS/SS, and ILB as our highest priorities next year along with depth at OLB, CB, and FS/SS. I could see us having another almost exclusively defensive draft. We still need some better starters at a few positions but we also need some much better quality depth as well. Bentley is getting old, Sharpton is just to small to play in the NFL, and Barber sucks.

I'm afraid that by using Mario as an OLB we will be under-utilizing his talents. Mario is in a similar position to Aaron Kampman who struggled to make the transition from 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB.

Personally, I would rather keep Mario, JJ Watt, Jarvis Green, and Antonio Smith as our DEs and have guys like Tim Bulman and Tim Jamison try and make the transition to OLB.

That is, unless you believe the words coming out of Wade Phillips' mouth.... which I can understand if you don't.

Mario will play DE, like he always had. He will be standing up more often than not, which will be somewhat of a change, but it's pretty similar to the way we used Mario a couple of years back.

If we are successful on first & second down, look for Mario to put his hand on the ground, just like Ware would.

All we are really doing, is kicking Antonio Smith inside permanently & taking Okoye off the starting line-up.

I'm thinking JJ will be on roster & as of today I think:

1. ILB 2. NT 3. SS 4. Center 5. CB/FS 6.DE/OLB 7. WR

Sharpton will impress Wade, maybe enough they can move Brian to strong side olb? creating more options, pass rushing angles for Wade to implement.

Makes sense to enable Mario standing up, but think he still needs to spend some time down low in front (5 tech). Thing I like most about this draft is not only how the FO addressed defensive needs, but they went to strength of draft which was the 5 tech position, they had to take either Watt or Jordan to have the flexibility to do the things Phillips wanted plus taking BPA off the board.

They just got plain lucky Brooks was still there after all those 3-4 teams who needed OLB passed, then made their own luck for a very low cost to trade up for Brandon Harris clearly the top corner available on the board. Checking the depth sheet all three are projected starters or at least contributing significant minutes.

Beerlover, you nailed it on Watt & we finally were able to go BPA in first & filled a need that I was unaware we had (DE). I'm working on a 2012 mock but you & 65 will not like it as I go after corners or at least FS that can play CB. I think I can add a starting WR & add depth on defense but it will probably be an all defensive draft. I'd really like to add a center in later rounds but not happening & I think we are OK with OT/OGs for one more year. If needed, we could shift SMith to center & replace him with Briesel or maybe SHelly SMith. ( I hope this guy really comes on this year. I wanted him in OTAs...

If we lose Mario ( I am considering a trade and making posters call me crazy) I would want a DE but that position looks weak after the first 2 maybe 3 players in 2012. Any way, I will try to post it soon & maybe it will create a bit of discussion as not much else going on. Thank de Lord, I'm going to work next week.

I guess this is what we're left with while the lockout continues, certainly not by choice, ye of little faith tread lightly or not at all. I think the Texans are stacked with talent @ corners just need some veteran leadership. The Center from USC went undrafted, Kris O'Doud he is at least 4th rd. talent but has injury history which is why he wasn't taken but believe you me teams will have him on speed dial the minute the NFL says go. If fully healthy, he makes the 53 man roster.

Agreed on O'Doud. We & 65 discussed him prior to trade & I hope we are on his doorstep, as soon as allowable. If healthy, this kid will be a ten year player.

I am hoping our Dbs will do better with coaching but we have no veteran leadership in backfield. Of course Aso can change all that. lol. SInce my 2012 mock will be based only on what I see now, corner and safety and ILB and #2 WR will be addressed.
