The Negative

-Our defensive end situation after Mario and Antonio is a joke. Nading and Denney contribute nothing. Antonio is better inside on passing downs anyways and especially since Amobi is starting to disappear again. This team will not contend for anything if the defensive end situation remains as is. Barwin was way more valuable than we predicted. Maybe running more 3-4 when Cushing comes back is in order?

-Turk punts too many touchbacks. I don't know if we need to work out punters but when we've needed an offense pinned deep he's always managed to punt a touchback.

-Slaton has almost played himself out of the league. I can't figure out whats happened to him.

-Owen does not look fast. He doesn't have explosion right now. It seems like it takes a lot more work for him to get going and he can't cut or stop on a dime like he used. We're not motioning him as much as we used to. I think he's healthy I just think he's not ready to go 100% yet. He'll have a much better 2nd half of the year than 1st. More Dreessen until then?

-Andre needs to get that ankle healthy. I almost want to see him take next week off and let Dickerson get a taste of the NFL. I think we'll be running it a ton next week anyways, Oakland is a great pass defense and awful run defense. Andre hesitated a bit on Schaub's pick to Jenkins and it was clearly because of the ankle. I don't want to see anymore of that this year because we need the Andre deep ball to win games.

-Big plays went missing in this game. I don't know why but Walter didn't even have a catch til the last minutes of the fourth. We didn't have the big passing plays we usually get. I don't know why. Butler wasn't even the problem really, he had a few bad moments but it was more the o-line just not getting it done. Perhaps the right guard rotation doesn't help? Winston look confused a few times too, is it affecting him?

A little harsh on Slaton I think.

As for a list of negatives, you really missed the biggest negative. The secondary, once again, got torched!

Any secondary will get torched when you have as much time as QBs have had against us. Face it, its the front 4 not the back 7. This team's pass rush is putrid right now.

Piss off troll.

lol I'm a troll? The Texans got the national media love this past week. NFL Network, ESPN, Fox Sports, multiple players with interviews on Jim Rome.

They have arrived. This team is finally legit.

Until an 0-2 team comes to their house and makes them look like Oakland and I'm a troll? This game was not even competitive unless you count the TD in garbage time. The pass defense is non-existent. The QB has thrown more picks than touchdowns but yet a fan of this team since it was conceived points it out and is called a troll. Beautiful.

Everything the Texans did was negative today. Everything. This was the Texans of old. No competitiveness at all. At all.

Eric Winston got owned all day in this game. Butler played better than him.

Pass rush is a joke...way worse than even last year.

Our secondary is pretty horrible right now, maybe they will put it together by the end of the season but right now they straight up suck.

Why didn't we run Foster more? We seem to be getting away from the run again. I know we are down but regardless Foster has had a good season and was having a damn good game, picking up chunks of yardage on almost every carry.

I disagree with anything negative. Two plays were the difference. Eugene Wilson had an interception opportunity only to have it slip away from him. And the holding call on Eric Winston when we had pass interference on them. Game changers without a doubt.

Are we excused for the rest of the game? No, but sometimes it's the way the ball bounces. We lost, move on, bring on the Raiders :)

Exactly. The media love was too much for the players this time. At the end of the day, the Texans are still 2-1 and do play an Oakland team they should beat next week. Not to mention the Giants aren't looking too good. The season isn't over here people.

Let's not forget the delay of game that wasn't called. The clock was at zero for at least two seconds. The false start that wasn't called (and instead an offside on Antonio Smith) was another call that really hurt.

I agree our pass rush was pathetic... but you can't give the secondary a free pass.

Winston needs to get back to football and stop messing around with that radio show of his.

You may not be a troll, but your suggestion that they lost this game because they gave some interviews and got a liitle more national press is stupid.

I needed to hear that. I have a problem with getting too worked up about football and you've brought me back down to Earth. Repped.

And anyway, our playoff dreams aren't dead yet. They're much more likely to survive a loss to the Cowboys than a loss to the Titans or Jaguars. Just gotta keep going.

Winston needs to get back to football and stop messing around with that radio show of his.

Agreed. Maybe I'm a little harsh, but if I was an HC I would ban my players from this kind of stuff through the season. But I'm not a head coach, I'm just a working stiff fan.

You may not be a troll, but your suggestion that they lost this game because they gave some interviews and got a liitle more national press is stupid.

They let it get to their collective heads. It happens every time they get a little media attention. Every time. Then come out flat against a team they should beat.

OK everyone, let's all take a deep breath, chill out, drink six or seventeen beers, pass out, wallow a bit in our own vomit, then get back here with a refreshed head.

Let's not forget we projected ourselves to go 2-2 during this 4 game opener.

If you're blaming the media attention, you're a knucklehead. The team prepares the same way regardless.

There was no pass rush. Period. There's the problem.

There's plenty of blame to go around in this game:
* The secondary, as everyone knows, was terrible, it's difficult when there's no pass rush.
* The D-line was terrible, Mario was just standing around much of the time, no effort.
* The playcalling was terrible, no consistency or flow to the offense.
* The O-line was inconsistent as well, decent/good in pass protection but terrible at controlling the LOS in the run game.
* Matt Schaub got rattled and felt the pressure, many passes were to low or behind the receiver.

They won last week with a bunch of media hype. Thats ignorant Skip Bayliss logic. This is the last I'll respond to ignorant troll posts in this thread.

I say they don't prepare the same way when they start buying their own hype.

Granted the pass rush was absent.
However, how do you explain Schaub's play the last three games? More INTs than TDs and taking sacks he should not be taking. Can't blame that on the pass rush can you?

I'll tell you what. You take the media hype. I prefer a team who plays with passion and fire every week and is competitive every week.

What most could say is that the team came out unispired and unmotivated. It was a poor showing.

The front of the Defense didnt apply any pressure all day. That didnt help our secondary, which is young, inexperienced, and is the weakness of this team. It needs to be fixed somehow, or we the offense has to be firing on all cylinders.

Today they should have ran it more than pass, because the pass coverage was too good.

All in all, we didnt give it our all to the Cowboys that were playing there Superbowl.

We wanted to be 3-1 when Cushing came back, and thats what will happen barring the secondary being worse than today and giving up big yards to Oakland. Then fans should be panicking in the streets.

Today, we lost to a team that was playing there Superbowl today, trying to salvage their season. We lost to a worse team. Its funny because a year ago if the records were switched, and we won, Dallas fans would be saying we were playing our Superbowl, and thats why Texans won, but the shoes on the other foot. We are the better team, should have won, but with the offense and defense being stifled, we were not the better team today. Any given Sunday. And we were down two key players. Put it in perspective.

Plus Schaub was just bad. Andre may need to sit and rest. Regroup. Losses happen, its how we will respond now.

But lets give the refs their due. They played great for the Cowboys. For a while there I thought they were going to choke the game and let the Texans win. But they showed us why the Cowboys are Americas team. Clock expiring on FG, missed penalties, over calling Winston, so on. Way to go team.

i dont like the way we've gone so much shotgun this yr. makes the offence pretty predictable.

I noticed this too. It really isn't Kubiak's MO either. Is it one of the new coaches Dennison's or Knapp's influence? Or was that some kind of way of helping Butler? I'd like someone to ask Kubiak this in the presser.

I agree with Porky over in another thread. The creative defensive formations we threw at the Colts was absent today. Just a four-man, straight up the field, pass rush.

Dropped interception by Wilson, which might have been returned for a TD.

Antonio Smith being a jackass by trying to get a false start, when it ends up giving Cowboys a first down.

Horrible offense playcalling once we passed the 50 yrd line. It just got cute once we passed the 50.

Steve Slaton has no vision or cutback decision-making anymore.

Brian Cushing means more to the WHOLE defense than anyone could ever begin to fathom. Seriously. He blows up edge rushing plays, screens, runs up the middle.

I'm with First Texans Fan, though. We had a huge win streak end. Now we get a bit of an easier team and then we get Cushing back. Things are not always what they seem.

When Barwin got hurt, half of the defensive playbook went out the window. You can't run the same exotic stuff we did with Barwin featured all over the place with Nading. He doesn't even have a 1/10th of Barwins athleticism nor does any other viable replacement at our disposal.

Antonio Smith wasn't being a jackass, that was a false start. The refs fudged that play, Buck and Aikman were all over it and said Antonio was right.

Everything else I agree with.

i dont like the way we've gone so much shotgun this yr. makes the offence pretty predictable.

I agree. Almost every shotgun play is a pass. I'm not sure if they put Schaub in shotgun to increase his time to look down field or not, but I think we're predictable in the shotgun set. The offense has to change the playcalling to adjust for the pass rush. We called a lot of plays that took to long to develop and we couldn't protect for more than 3 seconds.

Who said we got away from the run? Kidding? Didn't Foster go for 20 carry/100 + yards?

I agree with GP on a lot. Slaton is ruined. Cushing is an impact player and the playcalling just didn't fool anyone on O or D.

The gotta do something about the kickoff returns too. Starting at the 20 everytime is difficult, no matter how good your offense is.

I think everyone that was complaining after the draft that we din't take O-Line ppl or free agent O-line except one guy is justified. The run looks great, but Shaub is getting beat up.
The D looked uninspired. I think they went in a little thinking they would do the same as they did Preseason.
I wish we would of signed aaron shobel, and I can't wait till Cush comes back. I think this game would of looked alot different with Cushings intensity. I really believe that he is the leader of this defense and everyone plays off him.
Tell me if im wrong.
Im worried about the Jets and Ravens later this year since they have similar defenses as the cowboys.
So what do we do to fix pass protection?

How about that 1st round draft pick Kareem Jackson. He is sucking worse and worse by the week. Right now I would take Jaquez Reeves over him. We got cute in the draft and picked him over better corners because he was from Alabama and the SEC. Well it looks like that great Alabama defense was able to cover Jackson's deficiencies. So far he sucks balls. I would rather the Texans win this game almost than any other the entire season. Now we have to listen to those arrogant Cowboy fans for the rest of the year. You would figure the players could understand the importance of this game over the rest of them. But no. They are oblivious to it and we will endure all the water cooler hate once again.

Don't really know where to put this. Don't know who's fault it was. Meyers, or Winstons.

But that play we ran on the goal line, after the timeout... good play call, there were two receivers open in the back of the end zone. OD over the middle, and Jacoby running to the corner. Looks like Matt was going to throw it to Foster in the flat.

But Brooking came free to sack Matt.

Andre started in the backfield with Schaub, he motions out & is stacked with Jacoby on the right side. Brooking motions with him, maybe he thought Brooking was going to cover Andre, but Brooking made it clear he was going to rush the passer.

Like I said, I don't know if Meyers was supposed to call that out.. I don't know how he could have seen it. Maybe Matt, maybe Winston was supposed to say something. Winston blocked the end, did a good job too. But Caldwell was left with no one to block.

The call should have been made to pick up Brooking.

Do you think the players really care that someone is going to tease you at work? This game was 1 of 16 to them, as it should be. We are passed the days of moral victories and other BS like that. We are 2-1 right now, so there are very few teams in the league that can be talking smack to us.

I see this a lot, and I just don't buy it. I bet we are last in the league in blitzes. We get good pressure with our front four. I believe if we would blitz more often, from the Nickel back, the CB, the safety (if we are only going to send 5) to mix it up a little, our front four wouldn't look so bad.

Right now, I've got the Roy Williams "burn KJ" play going on the DVR. I remember seeing this from the stands. Single high safety, Pollard's in the box. Quin is playing off (5 yards) Austin who is lined up tight on the left side. KJ is in press coverage against the much larger Roy Williams.

I was in the stands screaming for Wilson to cheat more over Williams. There was no reason for him to be over the center, which he was. After the snap, he tries to get over there, but couldn't. He didn't even break until the ball was in Roy's hands.

KJ didn't do a bad job, but he slipped. A little safety help, and that never would have happened.

Cowboys fans (at least the ones I know) are already acting like they won the Super Bowl because they beat us (I thought we didn't matter to the Cowboys?). The fact of the matter is, the Texans are still 2-1 and at the top of their division. We have a very winnable game against the Raiders next weekend and the Texans SHOULD come out hungry because of the loss today. We go 3-1 with Cushing coming back, and we're good to go.

Still, the worst part about this loss is having to deal with the Cowboys fans smacktalk. It's annoying. I'd have rather the team lose last week and win this week almost.

I wouldn't be so so harsh on Jackson. You can see how he could turn into a great player. He is a rookie playing a very tough position, and I know he is making alot of mistakes but honestly he's played against some pretty damn good receivers so far. Reggie Wayne is one of the best in the league. Santana Moss, Roy Williams, Miles Austin, and Dez Bryant aren't exactly slouches either. Plus, he's made some good plays. He has just had some really costly mistakes. Jackson is going to be alright once he gets some experience, I really believe that.

I'm concerned with McCain and McMannis. I don't know what McMannis can bring because I haven't seen much from him, but McCain is getting worked. He is getting pushed around at the line of scrimmage and receivers have shown that they are not afraid to just lower their shoulder and get yards after the catch on him.

It wasn't smart going into the season with all year 1 or year 2 guys. I consider Molden a year 2 guy, he hasn't shown anything on defense. Something ND Kalu said on the radio today really jumped out at me. He said "there is something to say about having a veteran." Maybe that is truer than we give it credit for. Maybe a veteran who could play the nickel would really improve this defense.

The Reeves cut is looking questionable now. I think it would have been nice to have a veteran CB, but the Texans thought differently then (and I agreed with them, but in hindsight...).

I was very confused when we let go of Reeves. He isn't anything special but he has been around. He can teach these young guys things that the coaches may not be able to.

TexansBull, I feel you...... but the Cowboys aren't a worse team. I don't believe they are a tier 1 team.

I think they are a high tier 2 team, and they've shown as much the last 4 years. In truth, though we may match up with them talent for talent (& that is debatable... really) we are just craking into that second tier.

This was a game we all believed could go either way. I don't think anyone would have thought our passing game wouldn't have shown up, especially when we were able to run the ball effectively.

But they played better than we did today, no doubt about it.

There were several 3-4 looks.... a lot of the hurries & chasing Romo out of the pocket was out of the 3-4. Davis did false start, referees didn't see it. Any other team in the NFL, when the defense starts pointing, they get that call... Aikman saw it.. but we didn't get it. But we got away with a few of our own.

The offensive play-calling was particularly troubling I thought. You know they are going to blitz, that's what they do. But we had very few receivers over the middle (where their LBs blitzed from)... I thought it very peculiar. There was one in particular, we go into max protect, expecting the blitz.. three receivers on the outside, all on outside routes?????

Slaton runs with blinders, I agree.

Ditto on cushing.

We have a very winnable game against the Raiders next weekend and the Texans SHOULD come out hungry because of the loss today.

I'd love nothing more than for the Texans to be able to follow a disappointing loss with a convincing victory.. to be known as a team that won't lose 2 in a row.

I want our opposing teams to think, "Damn, the Texans lost, & we've got to play them next week."

Kareem is playing like a rookie, he will be really good one day, too bad we have absolutely noone to show him the ropes.

Slaton? Will some please find the old Slaton and bring him back, no speed, no power, no vision, and why the hell is he returning kickoffs?

Our linebackers are a liability in pass coverage.

However, how do you explain Schaub's play the last three games? More INTs than TDs and taking sacks he should not be taking. Can't blame that on the pass rush can you?

The Cowboys ran mostly quick pass plays; they didn't have that many long developing plays which would have allowed for more pressure on Romo. Their pass plays were remarkably quicker than ours, and they blitzed more. I agree that our playcalling was suspect at times and Schaub definitely held on to the ball too long.

Their pass plays were remarkably quicker than ours, and they blitzed more.

I agree... & don't understand. Kubiak is an offensive genius (IMO) but our gameplan against the Blitzing Cowboys didn't make sense. How many Blitzes was Matt able to beat? They Blitz, we should get one-on-one on the outside, or someone across the middle with no underneath coverage... Instead, we got 4 sacks.

Then, not only did they blitz more, they blitzed at more opportune times.. we didn't. Our 5 man LB blitzes are weak... no Cush. & our 6 man Blitzes were at weird times.

What was said about KJax when he came out of College? Wasn't he the "most NFL ready" CB in the draft? Does he look NFL ready? Hell no!

I was excited about our defense coming into the season, but this has been horrible. No Cushing, against elite QBs and we're very young......blah, blah.....poor excuses! Get it fixed or we'll be watching the playoffs on tv....again.

Wasn't directed at you, DBCoop, just piggy-backin your post
