Schaub on 2010 season: "We need to finish in the 4th quarter"

Not that this has anything to do with Schaub himself but the same story appeared on the A.P. newswire here and I looked on the right to see a picture of Schaub taking a snap from #65.

Possible position change for Briesel?

Hah. The fact that he has to even say "we need to finish in the 4th quarter" is absurd. Whats next? A Kris Brown statement? "I need to start making my kicks."

Here's yer sign.

That is odd - they even identify him as a center.

Wow - that's definitely Brisiel, all right. Wonder what that's about. I'm assuming they're just playing around will all the interior linemen right now (this early) and seeing maybe who sticks where or just getting some ideas. They also must really like Caldwell at RG.

Nothing would make me happier than to know longer have Myers at center. At RG, fine. I am tired of him at center though.

It's not just a matter of closing out the 4th strong, they need to learn how to step on their opponent's necks when they have them down earlier in games, too.

from what McFat was saying on the radio, Briesel and Smith have been getting allot of snaps at Center. Dennison loves Smith at Center because he is 310 lbs and has been pursuing him for some time...

Interesting indeed. I wonder if Briesel has a good enough head on his shoulders to be able to handle line calls and all the other responsibilities of a center. Funny how throughout the off season I don't think I've seen any posters here talk about moving Briesel to C (Not that I don't believe anybody has brought the idea up before. Just not talked about a lot).

I wouldn't put a whole lot into it at this point. I think they are just looking at the versatility that the different guys bring to the table. We saw what injuries did to the line last year, and this ios the time to start your contingency planning. We have a pretty good group of guys that can play 2 or 3 positions, and that is a good thing.

Briesel played center in NFL Europe with the Hamburg Sea Devils in 2007. Every OC that has been brought to this team has ended up at OG, except Myers and Flanagin.

Weary, Todd Washington, Hodgdon, Chris White and Caldwell were all OCs that the team made into guards.

McKinney was a true guard that they made a center.

"We need to finish in the 4th quarter"

In other words, we need to be able to RUN the football when we have a lead in the 4th. Keep their offense (Jughead) off the dadgum field!

I don't think there's that much to it, but at least the possibilities of using a C not named Meyers are there.

So if Dennison comes in and replaces Meyers, does that make him a successful hire in some fans eyes?

Oh.....oh.....thank you Lord!!

Brisel at C is interesting. I think Caldwell put a pretty good stamp on RG and if you think Smith was signed to be a starter (I don't really but play along) the line goes Brown - Smith - Brisel - Caldwell - Winston. That sounds better to me for some reason, I think mostly because Myers/Pitts aren't in but also I think Caldwell is a good player and this hypothetical line contains guys who are all solidly 300-315 pounders. I don't believe either Studdard or Myers can hold that much weight and their strength didn't make up for the lack of size. The OL drafted in the 6th round gets to learn, Butler is a good backup and Maybe Studdard or White get the pink slip....

Wade Smith was listed at 265 lbs when he played tackle at Memphis.

http://www.gotigersgo.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/smith_wade00.html

He put on some weight when playing for the Jets that didn't work out too well.

The Texans website had him around 296 lbs.

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=6080

The roster page has him at 310.

He did not look 300 to me when he played for the Chiefs last year, finally settling in at Guard.

Well,

this at least provides some (all be it very little) proof that the Texans are planning on putting the best 5 on the field.

I noticed that Brisiel worked some at center during last year's training camp.

Short review of things I noticed at today's (8/2) open practice:

O-Line - No Pitts. Studdard was the starter at LG. Duane Brown looks muck quicker than a year ago. Rashad Butler got out to the edge very quickly on a sweep and knocked a DB on his can. Didn't notice much from the young linemen, other than Washburn picking up a couple of false starts. There was one play during 11 on 11 nickel where Brisiel lined up at Center, with Myers at RG. Did anyone else see that? I hope there is a photo of this.
Looks like Dennison will try to put the best 5 linemen on the field. Which is a good thing.

Boy.. judgemental much?

90% of what players say in the news is just a rehash of what has already been discussed by fans for days/weeks/years.

Yall dont gotta get all indignant cause he stated the obvious :D.. I dont think he meant it to be some deep philosophical revelation that he has only recently come to realize or anything.

Besides.. if I had my way id have them repeating "play hard for four quarters. Never get complacent" to themselves 5-10 times a day all offseason :D

Ya know, I re watched the Miami game. Memories tend to fog and I don't mean to be negative, But, Miami left fourteen points on the turf in the third quarter. The Ginn Jr. TD call back on a leg whip and the Chris Brown catch and fumble that the refs missed and called an incomplete pass..twice. As usual they had a perfect first half: FG,TD, TD, TD, FG. Followed by a half where they couldn't finish off a wounded duck.

Interesting up there about Brisiel taking snaps at C. didn't take them but three seasons to figure out they needed to get some girth somewhere in the pivots. I was willing to give up the farm to take Iupati this draft. Probably just a versatility thing. Giving Brisiel some experience for a worst case scenario. Ya know like loosing both starting guards by October ? Until I see him penciled in at starting C, I gotta figure Kubiak isn't going to move Myers until it gets him run out of town.

Perhaps they see brisel as the way to keep the best 5 OL on the field:

Brown----Smith----Briesel----Caldwell---Winston

This allows Studdard to fight it out with Smith and Smith takes over the LG position. Caldwell fights it out with Myers/White and Caldwell stays at RG. Myers and Studdard become depth. White is cut.

OMFG... I clicked on the link, and I found this.

Kubiak said"He's not a guy that runs a lot, but there's certain coverages that are conducive to a quarterback taking off and running," Kubiak said. "So I think he can learn that. Matt's a sponge. He lives here and just works so hard."

He wants to turn him into Michael Frkn Vick.

I don't think Kubiak is trying to turn Schaub into a 1000 yard rusher (which Vick did once). However the ability to run when the defense plays a coverage with 1 or 0 LB's can be quite back breaking.

Of course if Matt runs on a 3rd and medium or long there is almost no way he picks up a first. I'd just rather him throw it away if the coverage is too close in those situations.
