Texans re-signed restricted free agent SS Bernard Pollard to a one-year, $2.521 million contract.
Pollard, 25, racked up 101 tackles, a career high four interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and seven pass breakups in 15 games last year. A highly effective run defender, he'll be targeted for a long-term extension if he keeps it up in 2010. Pollard also projects as a premier IDP defensive back.
 
Interesting. I wonder why only a one year contract? At least he's in the fold for now, that's a good thing.
 
Nice, and I sort of like the 1yr deal to see if he keeps the same level of play this year, and then reward him.

This is exactly the guaranteed amount that a RFA who was given a first round tender would get (and Pollard received a first round tender), so on one hand, it's possible this is only him signing the tender, and further negotiations could occur - on the otherhand, it's possible, the Texans may want to take a longer look at him before committing to more than a year...

My guess is that a lot has to do with the coming NFL strike (potentially) and a new collective bargaining agreement.

I'd like to take this moment to once again thank the KC Chiefs for waiving Pollard, thank you, thank you very much.
 
Rotoworld gets it not quite right again. Pollard hasn't signed a contract yet, he's signed a tender offer. He can still be plucked away by another team, but they have to give the Texans a first round pick in return.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports on his Twitter page that Texans SS Bernard Pollard, who had an outstanding season, signed his tender and he'll make $2.65 million this year. Pollard was tendered at the second-highest level -- a first-round draft choice. He was tendered behind MLB DeMeco Ryans and TE Owen Daniels.

So nothing new here other than he signed the tender, not a new one year deal. I doubt anybody matches that tender (1st round pick). And just because he signed the tender doesn't mean a longer term deal can not be negotiated. This kind of takes the pressure off, but hopefully we go ahead and continue negotiations and lock him up for at least 3 years, laden with incentives for playing time.
 
LIke I said, sign him up mid season or before December so he isn't pissed off at the end of the season and leaves out of spite.

A tender is the same as a one-year contract, so other NFL teams are no longer eligible to negotiate with him, and he is the exclusive property of the Houston Texans. So while not mentioning the tender, Rotoworld did mostly get it right.

Now just like any other contract, the two sides can mutually agree to throw it out in favor of something longer, and more lucrative to Pollard, and maybe that's continuing to be discussed (or maybe it's not). Regardless, Pollard is now the exclusive property of the Texans and (and this could be the driving factor in all this) is able to participate in all voluntary team activities, and required to participate in all mandatory team activities.

Wow. There were trade rumors recently and apparently they had some legs. This is far and away the most shocking move by the Chiefs.

Frankly, I don't understand this move. This leaves DaJuan Morgan, who was injured for much of last season as a rookie, and Mike Brown, who has been injured much of the last five years, as your strong safeties.

So obviously they were surprised in KC (externally to the organization)
I always figured that the new KC regime didn't want a thumper like Pollard, an "in the box" safety but instead they were looking to more finese, Cover-2 type safetys for their D-Backfield coverages ?
I'd be fun to talk to Herm about it ?
 
Pollard is a very important part of our defense. And he's back next year. So whatever.

This is good news. Even if its only good news for next year, it's still damn good news.
 
We need to see another year out of him before he gets a long term contract, so this was the right move by the FO.

It works in his interest, too. It gives him the opportunity to increase his value before a contract is drawn.

Perhaps Pollard does have more holes in his game that will be better exploited by opposing teams next season. Regardless, though, the guy is a playmaker and brings an attitude and leadership to the defense that is more than enough to makeup for getting beat over the top by an elite TE on occasion.

It will be the responsibility of the coaches to utilize Pollard's strengths and game plan around his weaknesses...........something that GOOD tactical coaches will ALWAYS do.........something that we have not CONSISTENTLY seen in the past.

I did not "Google till my fingers bled" but I did give it one quick search. I found to avid fan sites that indicate they were surprised by Pollards release and not very happy about it. After reading a few of these articles it seems pretty clear Pollards personality did not mix with Haley’s cursing and screaming. In one of the articles Pollard even addresses being shouted down by his coach on TV and not being willing to take it. I can understand why some teams let him sit on the street a few games while they did their homework to see if Pollard had an attitude problem or just a conflict with a new fiery coach. I would have preferred a 2 year deal but I can also understand being wary of the one year wonder phenomenon.

He was injured and unable to pass a physical. That is why the Texans (and probably other teams) didn't sign him earlier. My understanding is that the Texans had an agreement with a couple weeks before they could sign him.

What is that understanding based on? Information?
 
I thought I recalled the two weeks we waited wasn't due to passing a physical, but was some sort of contractual issue.

Smart move to give him a one year tender. We've had several safeties come at some point during the season, signed them to multi-year deals only to have them fall off the next year.

See if he can repeat last year's performance and then sign him to something longer.
 
If we signed him within the first 2 weeks, we would've had his 2nd round pick contract. However, we may have beaten the Jags had we gotten him in the fold and in the lineup as soon as he got cut which would've put us in the playoffs...

Hindsight is always 20/20 though :spin:

You're saying the waiver period during that time of year is two weeks?
