Wade Smith G to visit this weekend

Good, we need O-Lineman and Smith is quality. He's not a stud, but he'd be an upgrade over Studdard or Myers.

I think he's depth and camp competition. Studdard and Brisiel/Caldwell are still tentatively starters I'd say (very tentatively).

I think he would be a favorite to start imo. Either way, we sorely need depth at this position after last year and with Pitts basically gone.

Apparently, he can play almost anywhere along the line, and the local guy in the link thought he was the most valuable Olmen for the Chiefs last year.

I'm just not feeling it. He hasn't started 16 games since 2003 and he's supposed to be better than anything we had last year at guard? Sounds to me like he was more or less exactly what we had last year at guard, just older. Just what the Texans needed, a guy who's spent most of 8 years in the league sitting on the bench behind other, better players.

Reminds me of the last time we went to KC and picked up some OL depth. Jordan Black part-deux.

Now there was a real difference maker eh?

A reasonably solid player. Not a standout by ANY stretch of the imagination, but probably would add good depth.

He is largely what you are going to get this year in free agency. Pretty much everybody is some combination of old, injured and/or mediocore. Smith is probably a better version of Chris White.

Here is one list. the guys in red are either RFA or have signed somewhere else. Literally, outside of our Chester Pitts, this guy is the "best" left that fits what the Texans do.

Chester must not have fit what they wanted to do because they made no attempt whatsoever to re-sign him? Also for all those Iupati fans another smaller undersized zbs OG. I've learned my lesson each year getting excited about OL prospects only to succumb to other teams leftovers. not a happy camper :roast:

I hear you beerlover. A 289 pound OG from one of the worst lines in football doesnt do it for me either.

More I read about him the more I think he's the OL version of Antonio Smith. Just a solid versatile lineman who can acquit himself well in the trenches. I would prefer us to pick up Stephen Neal just because I think with his former NCAA champion wrestling pedigree and being a starting caliber OL with the Patriots he would provide us a guy who could actually get us some push in the pocket but I wouldn't be at all upset with Smith if he can supplant one of the current starters.

I'd really like to see Caldwell step up and be the player we need him to be. I don't call bust on rookies but considering who was starting ahead of him last year i'm awfully tempted to say he underperformed for his all SEC 4 year starter at Alabama pedigree.

FWIW, I have seen him listed anywehre from 296 to 315, so I have no real idea what his actually playing weight is. The thing with interior OLmen is that a team had to either develop or get lucky on a mid-late round guys or even high UDFA for those spots. I saw that stats earlier this week, it is was something like over the last 8 drafts only like 12-15 interior Olmen have been 1st round guys. Basically, whatever you style is a team needs to figure out how to propely evaluate Guards and Centers.

Neal's not gonna happen:

The Patriots continued to show Randy Moss they really do pay Friday, signing guard Stephen Neal. Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston.com writes that it's a two-year contract.

The Texans have seemed to make it a plan to sign FAs to any positions that are hardcore "need' positions before the draft, freeing them to take more of a BPA approach. With Pitts leaving, they really need someone else on the OL, even if just for depth/backup. Smith ought to be able to fill that role - not a huge improvement, but enough that the team doesn't absolutely have to pick up an OL in the draft.

By the same logic, I would really expect them to pick up a RB (assuming Slaton is not ready - if they really think he is, they might not) before the draft - again, even if it's not as a starter.

The guy is 296 lbs., don't we already have undersized issues on our O-line. Another training camp competition signing. Let's get someone good and quit screwing around, let's add some size and talent to our weak O-line.

It seems that most of the time we go for "backup quality" OL to go along with our existing mostly "backup quality" OL.

I was surprised to find that this guy was a starter. I have never heard of him. Was he a starter because of an injury or is he a decent lineman? As much as I would have liked to have had Peppers i am glad we did not pour out $72 million on him. Our FO will not make many moves till mid week when the pay scale drops a bit. We may not get the sexy names out there but as long as they get good, hard working "football savy" players I am ok with it. We as fans see the small pieces of the puzzle that our team needs to fix while they see the whole and make moves according to that. Just keep improving and moving forward and I will have no problems with their moves. And I think the Falcons are gonna regret the Dunta contract in the near future.

Part of the off season strategy is to bring in depth. I hope that this is the case.

This seems like a pretty standard off season for the Texans to me. In fact, the off season, pre-season and season are normally mildly dull and average.

This

The FO needs to change their way of thinking. What they've done with regards to aquiring OL talent obviously hasn't worked in the past.

LOL

KInda like the whole Texans organization. Normally mildly dull and average.

8-8, 8-8, 9-7

The one thing that is is clear is that they are NOT going to change the basic philosophy that Kubiak has spent his entire career over. Not worth frustating myself with thinking otherwise at this point.

Wade Smith to talk to the Buffalo media at noon.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/06/wade-smith-will-meet-the-buffalo-media-at-noon/

With Bills fans hoping for the team to find a new quarterback, the franchise will tender to the media at noon on Saturday free-agent guard Wade Smith, who visited the team on Friday (as pointed out in Josh Alper's most recent one-liners).

The organization distributed moments ago a text message announcing that Smith will be available today for questions. By all indications, he has not yet signed a contract.

Other teams have applied this approach in the past, most notably the Eagles. A free agent visits, and he then talks to the media before a deal is done.

Usually, the player ultimately signs.

Wade will indeed probably sign with the Bills because of his old OC. It'll have to be for the money and a promise to start. Because the Bill's offense, OL and the rest are up in the air, doesn't make it an appealing venue for a winner.

From the Bills.com:

Free agent visitor Wade Smith was to address the media at noon Saturday, but meetings with the coaching staff and front office ran long. Smith ran out of time before he had to catch a flight to Houston so he did not comment to us or reporters.

Three Bills negotiators were rushed to the Hospital with severe rug burns, sustained while begging Smith to stay.

Nice one

Why not listen to what houston has to offer before committing to the bills. Kc to buffalo is a lateral move at best.

Didn't KC's OL suck balls last year? Not exciting news.

I agree with you, this guy did not start on a good OL for the Jets, and he starts on a bad OL in KC. Sorry, that screams backup on a good team. Sounds like another depth guy so your a$$ is covered during the draft if you do not find an instant starter available at your pick.

Go look at the size of the guys Rick Dennison started the season with. This is his and Kubiak's model. Even when it appears to be outdated.

I'd love to see us make a run for Casey Wiegmann. He's a bit older (36?) but I think he could be to the Texans what Kevin Mawae was for the Titans the last couple years. He had a bad year because Denver switched away from a pure ZBS but he is one of the best ZBS centers in football.

A veteran presence like him would be a welcome addition in the interior OL. He's got the Bronco connection, so its just a matter of our new OC/his former OL coach signing off on him.

If Wade Smith makes it out of Buffalo this could be useful to read:

Alan Burge get's it right. He researches cheifs fans and finds that they feel like he was one of their best options and versitile as can be.

One way to gauge a player's value is to read their current team blogs and check out the fan reaction to news that one of their players might be leaving.

The reaction on arrowheadpride.com was good if you're a Texans fan. On a scale of 1-5 where 5 has fans leaping off buildings in despair and 1 is 'don't let the door hit you in the ass,' Smith weighs in at a solid 3.5.

Joel Thorman, the author of the item on arrowheadpride said Smith was "among the most valuable offensive linemen for the (Chiefs) in 2009." Keeping in mind that we're talking about a not-so-good Chiefs line on a team that's in the midst of a major rebuild.

But nonetheless, the reaction by Chiefs fans to the possibility of losing Smith was mostly negative - which means mostly positive for Texans fans. It's nothing like when the Texans signed Jordan Black a few years ago. Chiefs fans were rolling on the floor laughing at that one.

Every report I've read about Smith cites his ability to play multiple positions on the offensive line.

Chiefs Examiner Dan Rose characterizes Smith as "a versatile offensive lineman." Rose said that Smith initially came in as a tackle when he signed with Chiefs, but mostly played guard and center while at Kansas City. Rose says Smith is "a terrific value" because of his versatility.

did I mention that Alan Burge is the sh!t?

UPDATE: according to DaleMurphy Wade Smith made it out of Buffalo without a contract and is on his way to Houston. Who thinks he doesn't make it out of here?

He just left Washington. Looks like Shanny wasn't smitten with the idea.

Barrett, you are officially scaring me.

What's up S4?

My vibe on Wade Smith is that he would be a decent backup and spot starter on a team with a good OL.

In other words, he is a premo starter here.
