AUSTIN fans: Watch party location for 2009

Brisco_County

Apples and roadmaps
I've seen your discussions about Third Base, but I have my issues with that venue. If Third Base doesn't work out this year, my proposition is Common Interest on Burnet. It might be too far north for some, but there's enough value in the idea to make the trip worth it.

1) Setup: There are tons of HD screens showing every NFL game at once, and a huge projection screen for the Texans.

2) Accommodation: The owner is friendly and will respond positively to a watch party. He also lets people BBQ out front, and they have wi-fi. Parking is plentiful.

3) Availability: It's spacious but almost empty on Sunday, despite the recent remodel and new TV's. It's a vacuum waiting to be filled by the right crowd.

If you don't know the story, the venue was rebuilt with insurance money and grants from the city, so everything inside is new and the audio/video setup is high-end.

I like the Texans crowd at Pluckers, too, but the space is too small. I expect the Texans fanbase to grow this year as they get more national attention.

Get me their feelings on allowing for one TV to have the closed captioning turned on and I'll see if I'm interested. I had problems with Third Base in the past regarding that but I'm game if that place becomes the watch party. I'm done with Third Base South.

I was going to start going to Pluckers and try out Third Base North this season since I just moved to Pflugerville.

The projection screen will have the volume on, but he'll probably put CC on one TV if asked. The TV-to-customer ratio is very high, with many TV's not being watched. I also know he's very accommodating to anyone with a disability.

UPDATE: I spoke to the owner of Common Interest, and he said he'd be thrilled to have a Texans crowd every Sunday. He'll show the game on the huge projection screen with the volume on. He'll even put the game on one of the other TV's for closed captioning.

One of the things I like about this place is that he has 25 other HD TV's showing every game in the NFL, so I can watch all my fantasy players. They also have wi-fi so I can track my fantasy scores on my laptop.

It's a good setup. It's clean, spacious, and there are cute chicks working the bar.

Sounds intriguing thus far.

They have food? And a large viewing area for Texans fans? Third Base reserved the back room for us and put on a fair share of the TVs on Texans back there.

Most importantly... location?

They have bar food, like hotwings, nachos, etc. Free popcorn. They don't have a full kitchen like Third Base, but the owner is accommodating to anyone who wants to BBQ in the parking lot. I've seen a couple who BBQ's out front to sell to the patrons.

The main viewing area for the projection screen is quite large. The entire bar is about the same size as Third Base, but a much smaller crowd, so seating is never an issue.

It's located on Burnett near 183, next to Slick Willy's. Here's the Google map:

I have no problem with the Common Interest, but the FIRST clown that wants the Kareoke machine turned on, gets it right between the eyes !

C'mon Liv, we can sing some Priest!

Actually I am on board with this, at least to try it out. My schedule this season will allow me to make some watch parties if they are faily close which this place is for me. If it works out I will even promote them a little on the site.

I think you'd dig it. The guy has more authentic Longhorn memorabilia on display than any place I've seen. Signed footballs, jerseys, photos, etc.

During the daytime there's no kareoke, but I'm sure they'll have Priest ready for you after the evening game. Maybe even some Maiden.

Are we talking early Halford, or the way the guy sings now ? You take the high notes Hook....

LOL, good question. I think I would need to smoke a couple of cartons of cigarettes to sound like the Halford of today.

Anyway, I am in. I have tickets to the opener however will up for most of the games following that.

I've always maintained that a central location is the most logical. Third Base (so far) is the best option for that. For all it's short comings, it's central. If we actually win a few games, the place can be a great home. Good turn out means revenue, means we can get Nitro his CC. The best turnout we've ever had was when we weren't televised and we were 1-0. Get us off t.v. or start winning games and the turnout will come back.

I have season tickets so I'm only an option for some of the games which means I don't have much pull in the decision making. In the end it doesn't matter. If they don't have liquor I wouldn't attend anyway. Liquor (not just beer), lots of Texans fans, good picture quality are the most important things. The rest is semantic.

I don't try to rally the troops anymore. Nobody followed. I got shot out there. We've never had a winner though. If we do, people will show. It will be a good. Until we do...

Go Texans.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the watch party is wherever I'm watching the game. So, the Minnesota watch party starts at about 1pm in my car. At 3:30 it continues in the Blue Lot and in Reliant Stadium at about 7:30 pm... There will be an afterparty back in the Blue lot and will continue in my car until about 2 AM. Just PM me and let me know when we can expect you. I know Barrett is in!

Actually I'll be in the orange lot. But I guess you can drop me off there.

I take back what I said about you being smart.

We're in the Orange lot dumbass.

Accommodation matters most. It'd be silly to not drive an extra 10 miles for a venue that actually wants you there. I like Third Base in general, and the location's great, but we can't rely on management that only caters to our needs when the Texans are doing well. If there was an ideal central location, we would've found it already.

Don't know if any of you live in the Slaughter Lane/Circle C area or not but this place is pretty nice.

http://www.backspinaustin.com/

The website hasn't been built yet and the Gallery doesn't have the updated pics of the place. It just opened, and it's pretty cool. Don't let the gallery fool you into thinking this is a martini bar or something. Check it out. I live like a block away from this place.

I'd be coming from the Oak Hill/ Dripping Springs area.......about how far am I looking to get to common interest? I never go to the north side of town. I thought 3rd base was ok, but I know that there were issues.....been going there for past couple years and seen the problems with the CC and some of that stuff. Place sounds alright.....just want to know approximate on time especially if it's rainy all weekend. Also, I guess I would just take MoPac from 290/71 up to 183 N? I'll try to google it but their approximations suck, so if any one can guess the travel let me know.

Not sure if I can make it this Sunday or not.....will depend on rain and my money (payday today). If I do make it, some of you guys I may have met uner my old screen name of H-Town Balla 90. I know I've met NitroHonda, rickyb and a few others at 3rd base last year.

Any head counts yet?

I shop at the HEB at slaughter and escarpment in the Circle C area.....where is this place...haven't seen it b4....

I got an email from Pluckers saying that they want to make the Rio Grande location a spot to watch the Texans games.

Here's the email:

After watching the Longhorns game this week, we realized how much fun it is to be surrounded by an entire bar of fans cheering for the exact same team! And we thought, why stop there? Let's extend this great feeling to the NFL!

We'll be hosting NFL Watch parties for different teams at many of our locations this year. And we've been sure to tell everyone not to worry because we'll still have the sound on the Cowboys and Texans games. But why stop there?

Calling all Texans fans! We want Pluckers Rio Grande to be THE place to watch the Texans games this year! Join us each week for the Texans games and be surrounded by other Texan fans! And of course, we'll still have all the other NFL action on our many plasma TVs.

Happy Football Season! Keep Pluckin'!

Mark, Dave and sean

If you stay on Mopac northbound, it would be an extra 12 to 15 minutes of drive time than 3rd Base.

From Mopac, take the 183 flyover eastbound (right lane), take the exit off the flyover to Burnett Rd., turn south (right) on Burnett, and it's about a mile down. Big stripcenter with a Slick Willy's in it.

Here's the email:

Pluckers at Rio Grande was fun when I saw a Texans game there, but the venue is too small. There were no extra seats available. As the Texans' fanbase in Austin grows, this would become a bigger problem.

There's also no parking down there because of other businesses like Cain & Able's.

edit: When I say "no parking", I mean "limited parking". There's a parking garage next door if you feel like paying for it. The other option is to show up an hour early. It's the campus area, so parking's always a problem.

Forgot to mention, their beer prices on Sunday are at happy hour rates, and the cheapest is probably the $2 Miller Highlife.

I went there with my wife for the very first preseason game. It's a very very small venue.

I did not know that, I have never been to the location on Rio Grande, thanks for the info, I only hit the RR one anyway, in fact I am heading up there in a couple of minutes since the Longhorn game is not Directv.

There were 4 others at Pluckers Round Rock besides myself and my son. Considering it was a home game and other local options (plus being on TV) I was glad to see them there. I'll be back again this Sunday.

I probably won't make it out there this Sunday, and I was at the game last Sunday. I will most likely just save up my money in case they stop airing the games cause then I will be there every Sunday.

So has anybody shown up there at Common Interest?

Only a couple people were there to watch the Texans. The owner is a Cowboys fan, but he put the Texans game on the big screen and the Cowboys on a small one because he's committed to attracting a Texans customer base. When I told him only a couple Texans fans showed up, he said that's to be expected early on.

Of course, if the Texans can't win against tough opponents, no one will come out anyway.

Ok...the day is on schedule...I'll be a Pluckers Round Rock with my son (both #59) and my Bronco buddy by 11:30. See, the Texans/Bronco connection even bleeds down to friendships too. Come one come all, don't be shy!

We've started to get a few fans at Common Interest. None of them have been from these boards, strangely. The bartenders were wearing Texans jerseys, and fans of other teams like the Vikings or the Lions are cheering for the Texans on big plays. If you guys have better spots to go, let me know, but Common Interest is committed to attracting Texans fans right now.

Ok, I'll be up at Pluckers Round Rock again with my son in our steel blue #59 jerseys. We'll be in the outside patio area (they can close it off and have heaters if it's cold). We'll probably get there about 2:15 to try and get in as the early crowd starts to filter out. Don't be shy, come up and raise some hell with us!

Have fun bro, one of these days I will make it up there but not today, I just got a 47" HDTV yesterday and I can't wait to see the game on it today. Also I was at Pluckers last night for the Longhorn game, I was sitting in your usual spot. It was a good time.

Awesome, I know how you feel wiht the TV. I have a 60" HDTV and my wife doesn't fully understand (but supports) why I leave to go watch it on a smaller TV!
