Manual Wright (supplemental draft)

UberDork

Waterboy
He was the backup to Suan Cody over at USC or something like that...He is 6-6, 290 and would have been a JR I think...not sure on that. I don't know much about him, but at least he is good to speculate about.

I think he couldn't get his grades in order...or something like that.
Top prospect out of HS, and he is pretty young...

Sounds like a good developemental DE for us maybe.

Manuel Wright declares for NFL supplemental draft
By Garry Paskwietz WeAreSC.com
Date: May 12, 2005

The rumors had been spreading for weeks that Manuel Wright would leave USC to declare for the NFL supplemental draft if he did not maintain his football eligibility and that is exactly what happened today as Wright held a press conference at Long Beach Poly HS to announce that he is declaring for the draft.

Manuel Wright, who was expected to be a first-year starter in 2005 after serving as a key reserve for the past two seasons, sat out spring ball in an effort to improve his academics to the point where he could remain eligible. Unfortunately, those efforts were unsuccessful and Manuel was left with the choice of remaining in school and trying to regain his eligibility (while not playing football) or leaving school and entering the supplemental draft.

He was generally considered among the top recruits in the country coming out of Long Beach Poly where he was a member of the so-called Fab Five that included future Trojan teammates Darnell Bing, Hershel Dennis and Winston Justice. Nobody questioned his physical ability as Manuel had a rare combination of size, strength and speed in his 6-6, 300 frame which allowed him to overpower many an opponent. In his senior year with the Jackrabbits he had 142 tackles (60 solo) and 16 sacks, he was also a three year starter who captured 3 CIF title rings

2005: The dominating Wright likely could at defensive tackle as a junior in 2005. He'll sit out 2005 spring drills to concentrate on his academics.

2004: Wright was an often-used and effective backup defensive tackle behind Shaun Cody as a sophomore in 2004 and even started twice (BYU and Arizona) when Cody moved to end. Overall in 2004 while appearing in 11 games, he had 23 tackles, including 6 for losses of 17 yards (with 2 sacks for 10 yards), plus he deflected 2 passes and recovered 2 fumbles. He made 2004 All-Pac-10 honorable mention. He had a team-high 6 tackles (with 2 for losses, including a sack) and returned a fumble 20 yards for a TD against Colorado State. He added 3 tackles against California (with a key 5-yard sack on the Bears' failed last-minute scoring attempt) and Arizona State (with 0.5 sack and a deflection). He had 2 tackles, a fumble recovery and a deflection at Washington State. He posted 3 tackles (2.5 for loss) against Oklahoma. He was hampered during the second half of the year with a sprained right elbow that he hurt prior to the Arizona State game and then during the Washington contest. And he sprained his left ankle against Arizona, which sidelined him for USC's next 2 games (Notre Dame and UCLA).

2003: Wright was a backup defensive tackle behind Shaun Cody as a first-year freshman in 2003. Overall in 2003 while appearing in 9 games (all but Auburn, California, Arizona State and Washington), he had 8 tackles, including 2 for losses of 10 yards (with an 8-yard sack), plus 3 deflections. He missed the Washington game because of an infection on his chin. He had 3 tackles at Arizona, 2 against both Stanford and Oregon State, and 1 (an 8-yard sack) against Michigan in the Rose Bowl (with a deflection).

JUNIOR COLLEGE: He actually signed with USC in 2002, but did not qualify for admission, so he attended Long Beach (Calif.) City College that season as a part-time student (he didn't play football there).

anyone watch this guy.. where would you project him to get drafted (if any)?

all i have to say about this guy is he has never started a game in college. I do think that will effect what round teams are willing to give up to get him. I personally wouldnt go higher than a 4th or a 5th. If he went back and dominated for 1 season then maybe a 2nd but i think anything higher than a 4th is too high.

I don't think anyone will take a high pick on this guy, he has potential, but every player has potential coming into the NFL.

May 12, 2005 - The USC Trojans knew they were losing their top two interior defensive linemen when Mike Patterson and Shaun Cody were drafted in April.

Now they’ve lost their top choice to replace the duo.

Manuel Wright, the player those close to the program were calling the next great USC defensive lineman, elected to enter the NFL’s Supplemental Draft Wednesday after learning he might be forced to redshirt this season due to low grades.

Wright’s continued academic concerns made the announcement more of a formality than a surprise. Wright previously encountered academic troubles when he signed with USC directly out of high school. He did not qualify academically and instead was forced to enroll at Long Beach City College in 2002. While his grades were steady enough for him to play the past two seasons, Wright’s grades again slipped this spring. He missed this spring’s practices, instead electing to focus on his academics. Wright took his last final Tuesday, but elected to make himself eligible for the Supplemental Draft before learning his results.

The NFL has previously ruled that any supplemental draft would be held no later than seven days before the start of the first NFL training camps. Most training camps begin in mid July. The league notifies each team of any players granted eligibility. Thus far, Wright is the only player to have been granted eligible for the draft. Wright had two more years of eligibility after only playing two seasons at USC (did not play at Long Beach) but Wright is three years removed from high school, the primary NFL requirement for draft eligibility.

Though he only started two games over his collegiate career, Wright appeared in twenty and finished his collegiate career with 31 tackles, including 8 tackles for loss and 3 sacks.

While his numbers are less than impressive, Wright is blessed with a spectacular combination of size (6-6, 290) and athleticism, and routinely provided USC with big play ability off the bench. Listed by NFLDraftScout.com as the top ranked defensive tackle of the 2007 class, he has the size and strength to make an immediate impact as a run defender and shows rare burst for such a big man, as well. Scouts love his upside and feel that he was on the verge of a monster junior campaign.

Wright seems to have picked the perfect year to enter the Supplemental Draft. April’s draft was considered to contain one of the weaker defensive tackle classes in recent memory and with the free agent defensive tackle prospects not exactly inspiring, teams might be more willing to part with a high choice for a player of Wright’s obvious potential.

The last player to be selected in the first round of the Supplemental Draft was Duke quarterback Dave Brown, selected by the New York Giants in 1992. There have been eight Supplemental first round selections. Quarterbacks Dave Wilson, Bernie Kosar, Steve Walsh, Timm Rosenbach, and Brown, running back Bobby Humphrey, wide receiver Rob Moore, and linebacker Brian Bosworth were all selected as first round supplemental selections.

While many teams feel he’ll ultimately land in the second, the combination of Wright’s immense potential and team needs gives him a legitimate shot at the first round.

Unfortunately for fans, there won’t be the fanfare for the Supplemental Draft that there is for the April draft. Supplemental Drafts are conducted by e-mail. The draft order remains the same as the order used for the first round in April. If a team chooses a player, in this case Wright, it gives up its pick in the same round in next April's draft. If a player is not selected in the supplement draft, he becomes a free agent.

I think he started 2 games last year. He was only a sophmore last year and two top notch guys were above him. I bet he goes late round 2 early round 3...or rather that is what the winning bid will be...who knows what the pick will end up being.

If he had stayed and played for a year there he would of been a #2 or a #3. If a teams gives up a #2 or a #3 in this supp draft for him then there are getting ripped off.

I would definitely agree that Wright would be a pick based on potential, and with that said, I don't see him being a ripoff if he were picked in the late 2nd to early 3rd. I guess we may find out more about his athleticism if he has workouts, but I don't think he can be knocked for not starting many games in his first two years at USC...we all know who was in front of him, and from all accounts he was expected to be a starting DT next year...

Let us see what types of numbers he puts up in workouts. Then we can have a slightly more complete gauge as to where he will go.

not sure what the Texans will do on this one.. in the 1st 2 years of our existance (with the supplement picks) we'd take a shot on him.

The Obvious – Trojan fans have followed and waited for former Long Beach Poly defensive tackle Manual Wright, who watched USC games last season in the stands with his family, to make an impact during this 2003 season.

The Not So Obvious – With the Trojans leading 14-0 and Michigan driving, all that oozing potential displayed itself in the second quarter when Wright bull-rushed through a Michigan offensive lineman and racked Wolverine quarterback John Navarre. On the next play, Wright, who spent much of the early portion of training camp trying to get in shape, tipped a Navarre pass attempt.

i think that if he was able to play this year at USC he would have a great year and would have been better than atleast a three and maybe into the late first. he has the size and ability to be a great dt or de in our case. played very well behind patterson and cody, but never got the chance to show his stuff on an every down basis. not that recruiting rankings matter when it comes to entering the nfl but he was one of the highest rated defensive players come out of long beach poly. with that being said i think that he will probably go in the mid 3rd or 4th.

i would like to have him in but i'd be surprised if casserly spent anything higher than a 4th rounder on him

honestly.. i wouldnt go higher than a 5th. We are talking VERY raw.. VERY LITTLE experience.

A 5th rounder is a good spot because most 5th rounders are fairly big risks anyway.. but you can still get 4th round playmakers in a good draft (DD).

I just don't think most 5th rounders have his type of potential. He was good enought to push Sean Cody over to DE so that he could play...he just got hurt.
I think he is trying to get his grades up, but if he can't do that, I have a feeling someone will spend at least a third on him in the Sup Draft.

from GBN-

"Supp draft DT books workout... southern California junior DT Manuel Wright, who has entered the NFL's summer supplemental draft, will workout for pro scouts in Los Angeles on July 8th. The 290-pound Wright, who had been expected to help replace Mike Patterson and Shaun Cody in the Trojans' starting lineup this fall, is expected to attract bids for his services ranging from the third to the fifth rounds. The supplemental draft is scheduled for the 14th of July."

personally I'd rather would have liked to draft Anttaj Hawthorne who went in the 6th rd. Also in the 6th rd went massive DT Anthony Bryant, Alabama. If your looking 5th round you could have drafted Ronald Fields 6-2 322 perfect fit for the NT in a 3-4. so i'd rater doubt he goes as high as the 3rd round, possibly the 4th most likely the 5th :)

His size reminds me of Richard Seymor from the Pats. If he was going to start for USC he has to be pretty good. I kind of hope that we do pick him up.

I dunno....after using our #1 pick this year on a DL (and I do like the TJ pick!) and also factoring in what we paid in FA for R.Smith last year, DLine definitely drops in the priority hierachy below more pressing need areas like
the OLine and TE.

If we don't get to carried away on the draft pick and dollars, I would be willing to see what the kid is about and maybe park him on the development squad and then give him a tour of NFLE to see what we might have. Something like a 4 pick or lower and a small bonus with at or near min. salary would work for me. We have two guys on the D-line that are aging and only one replacement prospect in the house, so another is/will be needed within the next 2-3 years (could be sooner with injury). The guy might be what we need, who knows.

What is the development squad? Is it different from the practice squad?
Anyway, I hope we get the guy. We could use another DE, then all we need for next year is that Ngata guy for NT and we are set for a while at DL. :)

One scout who asked that his club not be mentioned even suggested the tackle might have enough momentum now to catapult into the second round.

ESPN Link

Looks like he will go in round three if he has a good workout and nothing else changes.

I just posted my annuall age limit rule manifesto lol. Here he is .

Not an acedmic, but the good Lord blessed him with a body most of us would die for.
Hey you got a guy who is 290 and a very good player. I'm in the LT, TE camp as far as the '06 draft is concerned, so I'd say a three sounds about right. Get a guy who will fill out to 315- 320 with a couple of years in the weight room. Be in line to spell Robair this year. We would have two young DL lions who can grow together. Be a good guy to have. The odds are we will not be in a position to get Rod Wright. This guy wouldn't be a bad second choice. The down side is....if you're going to move up to grab a pace/ogden type LT, that goes out the window with this pick. Gonna need those three's to move up. Be interesting to see what the final bid will be.

workout update. 4.8 for a guy that size is pretty impressive.
WRIGHT will also be available for interviews on July 7th at the LAX Marriott, a total of six interviews have already been requested... he also has had a full physical and medical evaluation done by members of the Philadelphia Eagles training staff, so any/all teams interested in receiving a copy of those results should contact the Eagles head trainer, Rick Burkholder (burkholder@eagles.nfl.com)... as of this weekend he has made private visits to Philadelphia (6/17/05), Cincinnati (6/18/05), Jacksonville (6/22/05) and today with Miami (6/23/05) before returning to Colorado to continue his training... weighed in at 6056, 322 pounds, as of last Friday (6/17)... 33 3/4" arms and 8 3/4" hands... he also scored 17 on the Wonderlic in his first attempt... plans to be down around 305-310-pound range for the workout, and has been timing in the mid-4.8 range in the 40, while doing mid-to-late 20's reps on the bench, while training for his "Pro Day" workout... the plan for his actual workout is for him to run the 40-yard dash twice followed by all other combine-type testing and then complete positional drills with an eye towards completing the workout by 12NOON... please contact his agent to receive additional information, including directions, available interview times and whether their will be access to the USC fim room the morning of the workout.

there is a list of a few more players that are trying to enter the draft

http://www.gbnreport.com/nextlevelreports.html
Former UNLV senior cornerback CHARLES EALY (#20) has officially petitioned the NFL for entry into next month's Supplemental Draft... his paper work and transcripts had been turned into the NFL office for final review, and official approval came back earlier this morning between 10-11AM (PCT)... originally recruited as a wide receiver by Fresno State out of high school, he made the transition to cornerback in junior college, and then grabbed a starting position last spring with the Rebels... played in ten games, as a junior, recording 31 tackles, one pass breakup and one forced fumble... he ran between 4.45 and 4.47 in the 40... which was recorded on a grass surface at Central Oklahoma earlier this spring, which was attended by two NFL teams... had intended to transfer to the Division II program, but could not get academically cleared in time to be eligible for the fall... has also done between 15-18 reps of 225 pounds... his official arm and hand measurements were not available, but he wears XX gloves... has been measured at between 5106 and 5110, 202 to 212 pounds; was 5106, 212 pounds at the spring workout... very good upper body build for his size, resembles more of a former RB body type than wide receiver... pretty flexible; has been as high as 212 pounds, but will likely settle in around the 200-pound mark for this workout... his top games from last season included BYU, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Iowa State... shutdown the opposing receivers versus both Tennessee and Wisconsin, so teams started to throw away from him... has played mostly on the field side... works best as a bump and run defender and shows fine aggressiveness... his struggles were often associated with the academic side of college life... "(I) would always focus on football, not really enough into the class work side of things", said Ealy, as part of a 20-minute interview conducted last evening... despite his academic issues at UNLV, he did record a 24 on the Wonderlic in his first attempt... he was late for a team bus, which was scheduled to leave for the Colorado State (November 13th) contest, as he overslept, but there is no other record of any off-field issues with him... "(I) was always thinking a lot about how I was doing or getting behind with my studies... it would sometimes carry over to my work outs... so now (mentally) I am getting ready for all the physical work that lies ahead of me and becoming straight by not having any outside issues", as Ealy has been working out in the Los Angeles area with a trainer and several current NFL players... gave straight forward answers to any/all tough questions... takes criticism well and takes responsibility for his actions and lack of progress in the class room... he intends to hold a "Pro Day" workout on Friday, JULY 8th, starting at 1PM in the Los Angeles area, so that scouts/coaches attending the morning workout for USC defensive tackle Manuel Wright, can easily attend his workout... those who need him to complete paper work or interviews can arrange those for the days leading up to that event... he will also have results of a full physical/medical examination available at that time, as well... please contact his agent for more information, including time, date and location of his workout.

OTHER POTENTIAL ADDITIONS TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT:

The following players have informed us that they are considering or having their eligibility reviewed for the upcoming NFL Supplemental Draft... former BAYLOR linebacker MICHAEL TOLBERT (#58), who may have one-year of eligibility remaining after starting 11 games last season, he was listed as a senior on the roster, but missed close to a full season (9 games) due to various injuries between 2001-2003... had 53 tackles (5th on the team), seven tackles for loss, two sacks, two QB hurries and one pass breakup... top games came against Texas A&M, Nebraska, Texas State and Iowa State... was the difference-maker in the team's upset win over the Aggies; had seven tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack in that contest... also lettered in the shot put for the track & field team... has started games at both middle and outside linebacker... bright kid that already has a degree in speech communication... quiet and known for being one of the better character kids on the team... currently, he is 5110, 240 pounds... his weight has been between 232-245 pounds during his college career... he has also been timed in the 4.6 range in the 40 in past years... former TOLEDO defensive end (#56), who was thought to be a potential starter for their defensive end JEROME WALKER line as a sophomore last season, but ran into some academic problems last spring... he played in eight games, as a freshman (2003), and recorded seven tackles and five QB hurries... his most recent size was 6044, 257 pounds... had been listed on the team's spring 2004 depth chart as a starter at defensive end... he has provided a copy of his transcripts and paper work to NFL officials... former TEXAS TECH cornerback/running back/return man IVORY MCCANN (#36), who was a heavily recruited running back out of Forest Brook High School in Houston, Texas, has also provided a copy his transcripts and paper work to NFL officials... ran the 46.7 in the 400-meters, as a track star in high school... broke several state records, including as a member of the team's 4X100meter team... was also a member of the Junior National USA Team... started his career off on the offensive side of the ball, but was flipped over to cornerback to make better use of his size/speed combination... had two carries for 21 yards and recorded five tackles and one forced fumble, mostly on special teams... however, his biggest asset came on kickoffs returns, where he earned third-team and honorable mention All-Big 12 after the 2003 season... averaged 27.6 yards per kickoff return, including one touchdown... recorded the longest kickoff in school history with 108-yard yard return for a touchdown against New Mexico... very solid on coverage units versus Baylor (2003)... also had big efforts against Nebraska, Kansas State and Oklahoma State... currently, he is 5080, 165 pounds... his weight has varied between 158-170 pounds... it has been noted to our staff that he has been timed consistently in the 4.3 range, and sometimes even faster in the past.

TOP SUPPLEMENTAL PROSPECTS SCHEDULE WORKOUTS:

USC defensive tackle MANUEL WRIGHT (#92) and CLEMSON wide receiver ROSCOE CROSBY (#25) have both scheduled their official "Pro Day" workouts, as they prepare for the July 14th NFL Supplemental Draft... both players have been declared full eligible for the draft by the NFL... Crosby's workout will take place on Friday, July 1st at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina, starting at 11AM... Wright's workout will take place on Friday, July 8th on the campus of USC in Los Angeles, CA, starting at 10AM...

I have been looking around but have failed to find any information about Manuel Wright's workout. Anyone else able to find anything, if anyone else looked that is.

Wright measured 6-feet-5, 329 pounds. He ran times of 4.97 and 5.0 seconds in the 40-yard dash and bench-pressed 225 pounds 16 times.

The article says no better than a 3rd...With those numbers I think that sounds about right...16 reps, ouch...maybe he has really long arms because a couple of months ago I could do ten of those things, and I aint big and strong...but I still have a feeling someone throws a late 2 out there...probably just me over thinking the whole process due to a drought of football related news...thank God training camp will be here soon.

I could see them using a later round(our 2nd third rounder or later) pick.. on wright or rosco... we probably get outbidded but I think we will ante up something just to see
rosco

Roscoe has been out of the game for awhile, and I definately wouldn't spend a 3rd, 4th, or 5th rounder on him. If we were in need of a WR then I could see us taking a look at him, but where would he play when we've got Armstrong/AJ/Gaff/Starling/Mathis/Thomas/Swinton/Bradford? I really wouldn't want Wright either or at least not for a 1st day or even 4th Round pick. I just don't think he'd fit in very well in a 3-4 scheme. Besides you know how much CC likes to use his picks to do some moving and shaking come draft day. There'd have to be a high quality prospect at a need position for him to consider giving up a first day pick.

unless the Texans would be willing to part with a 2nd round pick again, I fully expect Miami to make the Wright choice. the Miami Herald reports "The Dolphins sent five scouts, including recently named general manager Randy Mueller, to a workout by former USC defensive tackle Manuel Wright."

I would be in favor of trading Hollings for him however :dangit:

So does anyone think the Texans should have offered a 4th? Just curious (That is how this works right? Since Miami had such an awful season we would have had to offer a higher round pick than them to get him right?)

The Dolphins used their second pick in the 5th.

I don't know if the Texans would have used a pick on him. He showed up 20+ pounds overweight for his workout in front of the NFL scouts. Questionable work ethic and desire aren't looked on very fondly by this front office and coaching staff.

He was fat and weak in his workouts. He was a tub of goo plus he could only do 16 reps on the bench. I can do that and I'm 41.

I'm making a habit of quoting myself. Guess that qualifies me as an egomaniac. I think Vinny's 'tub of goo' comment sums up what I think of Wright pretty nicely.

I think he was worth a 4-5 rounder. I dont think he really had his heart set on coming out this year. I think you can blame a bad showing on that a little.

Plus with some pressure from the coaches and his new peers, i think you can expect him to try and reach his potential.

I think we should have used a 4th on him.

They got him for a good value, some dude on nfl live said if he sayed and graduated he could have been a 1st round pick.

was a fifth rounder as a supplemental pick by Dolphins. I was wondering why we did not waste a least a fourth rounder on this guy. He played @ USC and has ton of potential especially with our Dline getting old.

We did not need him this year, but could be valuable in future years. I think a fourth rounder by Texans could have been a good investment for the future.
