NFL May Ship Extra Regular Season Game to England

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After seeing fans jam London's Wembley Stadium the past two years to watch an NFL game, the league is considering sending a second regular-season contest overseas in time for the 2010 season.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday that the second game also could be played in London or another location in the United Kingdom. The issue will be discussed at next week's league meetings and could be included in a larger plan to add up to two regular-season games to the NFL schedule.

"The fan reaction we've had in London has been extraordinary. We would like to feed that passion," Goodell said after speaking at the Charlotte Touchdown Club. "We have a great fan base in the UK. There have been discussions of taking the second game and playing it in another market in the UK. That's something that we'll evaluate."

Not surprised they are talking about sending another game over here. Its a guaranteed 80,000 sell out at Wembley, and the help it must do to marketing teams over here should be huge.

However, I'm not sure how this will go down...I seem to remember there being a few fans getting pissed at losing one of their home games, not if two are going to lose their games, there may well be more people saying enough is enough... Seems to be a 'its all good, as long as my team doesn't lose a home game' attitude around?

On a side-note, its disappointing that the NFL aren't looking at spreading it around Britain (or even Europe for that matter). Just in Britain, Scotland had the 'Scottish Claymores', and must still hold a fanbase (and anyways, a 6 hour train trip from London isn't that bad anyway) and I'm sure Ibrox or Hampden Stadium could host a game. Failing that, there is a load of NFL support in Germany, where NFL Europe/Europa was pretty much based.

Either way....thoughts?
 
Eh, since they were (did) play with relocating the pro bowl - why not send that one over and stop messing with people's home games.

Agreed! They could even move it from year to year to different cities across the pond. It would also give players more incentive to make the Pro Bowl. I mean, a Pro Bowl in Florida? Whoopty doo!

I like the idea. The pro bowl is becoming irrelevant anyway. Europe gets to see the best of the best, the players still get to vacation, and the US fans don't lose a meaningful game.

If we're lucky, the world will embrace the game. Then new leagues will form, the develop and start signing players away from the NFL. Before you know it we will be watching the NFL on pay-per-view once the NFL teams outbid the competition abroad.
 
Personally I dont like it. I think the fans deserve to have their team's home games played at home.

If the Texans went, would we have more fans in the UK? Probably. But Ill pass.
 
pro bowl over there would be better than a regular season game. they could charge more and ppl would pay it b.c. all the big name players would b there. Not just two teams players
 
I don't get why folks think sending the pro-bowl over there is a good idea.

I think people would tire of the event really fast because its not a true representation of the game.

I'd much rather watch a competitive hard fought game vs. a game where they don't even kick real field goals.

so would i that is y I want the real games to stay in the US...teams shouldn't lose a home game during the season...i'll let preseason slide

Why don't they just start a damn professional football league in England like the Japanese have baseball and the Greeks have basketball, and stop trying to take our football away from us?

Exactly. When people complain about games going over seas they get told they are behind in the times and that globalizing the game is good for the NFL.

What is the positive effect other than filling owners wallets? All I see is NFL fans getting screwed out of a home game.
 
Why don't we just give a franchise to London and quit giving them ours. A 6 hour flight form London to the US isn't that long when you only play once a week.

If anything, Goodell needs to let a couple teams play a couple pre-season games over there...

I think fans would much rather lose one of those games vs. losing a regular season game...Plus the fans across the pond would still be getting competitive play...

Well that works for the east coast teams. Try telling the Seahawks to take an 11 hour flight to London.

Great post. I dont understand why anyone thinks the Brits would want to watch a flag football game with no blitzing, or hard hitting. It doesnt make sense.

Plus I think alot of players will decline the offer to play in the pro bowl when it gets moved to Miami, and especially if it was in London.

3rd pre-season game the starters mostly play. You don't think that Europeans would have been entertained by that third pre-season game we played against the cowboys a couple years ago? That game was pretty intense for 2 and 1/2 quaters...I believe many of the cowboy starters even played into the fourth quater....

But that aside, I am not tired of pre-season games...Of course I'm anxious to get the regular season started, but the actual product on the field is better than a college game or the now deceased NFL Europe....

I actually enjoy watching all the back-up players play...I guess I'm just weird like that tho'...

Just like the government............."We only planned on doing this for 1 game"..............."but it was so successful (in weighing down our wallets), we're going to do it for 2 games this year".........."and if it is as successful, then we'll...........................

normally i should be lucky with more games in europe... london, scotland, germany... i can go there and watch a nfl game in a great stadium... but i dont like the idea... i went to london last year and watched a great game between the chargers and the saints... But i wont go there this year... Cause it was a very expensive trip to london... the city is exprensive, the tickets are too, and the weather in london is always bad...
I have to say the texans shouldt matter bout it, cause i think i was the only guy with a texans outfit at wembley stadium in london. after the game i went to a steakhouse and met the guys steven miranda and jeff ellis from the nfl rants and raves podcast... They laughed about me and told me they tried to take photos at the stadium from guys in jerseys of all teams... and they had all teams after the game expect a guy in a texan jersey... im sure there were a few more texans fans, but i didnt see anybody... So im sure the texans are not going to europe in near future...
I would like to get NFL Europe back and none regular season games, we have better football players here than the german national league and some players improved a lot (Kurt Warner for example)...
I feel a little offended by mister george goddell... Just money-grubbing...
and i have to say the probowl should be in hawaii, i plan a trip in a few years to the superbowl and the probowl and i would like to go to hawaii :)

Well I don't mind a game in Europe, given the teams can voluntarily choose if they want to give up a home game or not and want to play there or not. I haven't been to any of the London games (I simply can't afford it being a student) and my first NFL game I want to attend will be in Houston, however I know a lot of people (well not know, I read their posts on a german forum) who had a great experience in London. I do however think it's ridiculous to even consider playing a Super Bowl in London, or Europe for that matter. The Super Bowl ought to be played in the USA, because this is where the game comes from and where it is most popular.
 
Just a thought. Has anyone thought of starting a petition to let that asshat of a commissioner know how the fans really feel? Not that he would care cause his eyes are shaped like dollar signs, but, might not hurt anything either. Maybe fans of each team should let their respective owners know how they feel. Hit them in the pocketbook and I bet they take notice. :includeme:

Easy. Your London team pays for a "facility" on the east coast somewhere and any team that's coming further than say, oh "The Mississippi River" flies out there at the start of the week, spends a week practicing there, and then flies over for the game.

You're really only talking about a few games a year where the visiting team to London is inconvenienced in this fashion. Say they're in a division off the east coast. Well, they're only going to play 8 home games so haldf the season they'd be coming this way and not the other way around.

Now, of those 8 home games 3 are absolutely going to be against division opponents so those teams would be coming from the east side of the country one would assume. That is unless they were in the NFC East of course where Jerry Jones had to stay in his division. Aside from that though you probably only have to worry about "some" of the remaining 5 opponents.

It's not as big an issue as it appears. It's certainly better than trying to fly teams to Hawaii for games against a team located on the islands.

Note: This doesn't change anything about how stupid this idea is and how I'd like to kick Roger Goodell's head in for pushing all this crap the way he does. The owners are of course greedy, stupid-blind-lucky, fools so I don't expect anything better than this out of them but the Commissioner is supposed to be smarter than this.
