Pickin' RB's

rarazz00

VOLUME 10
So hear I sit thinking what are the Texans gonna do about the RB situation...I looked on our roster and we have Slaton, Moats and Chris Brown on IR...thats all I've seen. There are some talented FA-RB's out there, but we ain't opening up the coffers for no RB, which would be stupid for a RB that will only be hired just to spell Slaton, not run many carries. I'm not sure about Moats, but so far he's in...Now with this all being said would anyone have a problem with drafting TWO RB's in this draft and who and what rounds would you target..I told "Beer Lover" in an earlier blog that I thought the Texans would target Arian Foster-Tenn. Now I'm not so sure....anyway My new targets:

Andre Brown N.C.State-4th

Kory Sheets-Purdue-option 4th

Ian Johnson-Boise State-option 4th

Marion Lucky-Nebraska-7th

Gatrell Johnson-Colorodo St. option 7th

well bloggers, what ya think?

Gatrell Johnson is a guy I would like the Texans to grab but he won't bw available in the 7th round I can assure you.

DOn't want any part of Ian Johnson. He is to small, doesn't have blazing speed, and really wasn't even that spectacular in the inferior conference that Boise State was in.

Like you said we need a guy to compliment Slaton and Gatrelll seems to be able to do that with his skill set.

I agree with you on Gatrell Johnson, though he didn't have a great combine. If you reference blazing speed he didn't register it in "Indi" on Sat. He was pretty scary looking though..monster legs. I bet he'd make for one hell of a FB.

Now reguarding Ian Johnson..I personally haven't seen any footage, but I'll give you these stats:

Ian Johnson, Boise State
Height: 5-11. Weight: 212.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Combine 40 Time: 4.46.
Benchx225: 26. Vertical: . Broad: .
Projected Round (2009): 5-6.
2/23/09: Ian Johnson shocked Indianapolis when he ran an unofficial 4.3 40. The official time has him at 4.46, which is still pretty decent compared to the plethora of Sunday's slow backs. 2/21/09: Ian Johnson's 212 pounds? What happened? Did he eat someone by accident?

Also Donald Brown of UCONN blew up the combine.... just somethin to think about

I don't care that we normally don't take high round running backs. Give me Shonn Greene in the 2nd and I will drool with anticipation.

Steve Slaton Height 5-9 Weight 203 lbs.

Gartrell Johnson, RB

Height:

Weight:
219

Ian Johnson, RB

I am confused, if you think Ian Johnson is to small why would you want Gartrell?

Not to mention Ian Johnson performed well at all the drills except Broad Jump and Vertical Jump.

yes, taking a RB in the earlier rounds would be something to consider...though I feel the higher draft pic should go towards our dismal defense..:d:

for this year, if an offensive player is taken in rounds one or two, it better be a lineman. We can get decent RBs to help out Slayton in the 3rd and 4th rounds.

I'm w/ ya on that...I personally would like to see us pickin' TWO RB's say 4th round and 6th or 7th...:fans:

Ian Johnson won't do anything in the NFL. Quote me on that if you want later on if I'm wrong, but he isn't that strong of a runner. And he would be similar to Slaton and we don't need a guy who is just like Slaton. We need a bruiser who can move the chains and get short yardage in the red zone. Gatrell is a pounder that could be available when we need to get a bruiser.

Shonn Greene would be my guy, but I don't want to pick a RB in the 2nd round.

I'd love to have Andre Brown but I think he performed great in the Senior Bowl and had a great combine so he'll probably move up to the early 3rd round. I wouldn't mind having Gartrell Johnson but he reminds me of Ron Dayne, bruiser runner but not very quick to hit the hole. He doesn't strike me as being quick enough for this one cut and go system.

What about Cedric Pearman? WHere do you think he'll get picked up?

Well, according to Walter Football::brando:

Cedric Peerman, Virginia
Height: 5-10. Weight: 216.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Combine 40 Time: 4.45.
Benchx225: 27. Vertical: 40. Broad: .
Projected Round (2009): 5.
2/23/09: Opened eyes with a very sharp 2009 NFL Combine, running a 4.45 and garnering a 40-inch vertical. Unfortunately, he measured with the smallest hands at the 2009 NFL Combine (8 inches).

1/3/09: Cedric Peerman finished with 774 rushing yards and seven touchdowns as a senior, but also caught 44 balls.

10/18/08: After gaining just 96 yards the first four weeks of the season, Cedric Peerman tallied 110- and 173-yard outputs against Maryland and East Carolina in consecutive Saturdays.

5/21/08: Cedric Peerman suffered a season-ending ankle injury on Oct. 6. Before then, he was having a solid year, rushing for 585 yards and five touchdowns on a 5.2 clip. tball...

What about Cedric Pearman? WHere do you think he'll get picked up?

WalterFootball has him going in the 5th but I just can't help but think with these stats he'll go higher. The only drawback is his hand size (8 inches), but if his past history shows he doesn't fumble, I don't think it will be an issue.

and how many fumbles ? Anyone remember Echimandu ? I'm not against him in the fourth....just saying. We got a thread working on the other board about J.J. these guys do not like fumblers. I kept hearing that about Peerman when they talked about him.

As far as Ian Johson is concerned....seven to ten touches....that's what we're looking for. I thought he was pretty beat up his sophmore and junior years....obviously with the numbers he posted, he appears to be healthy.

Donald Brown should go off the board in the second.

No love for Rashad Jennings in here? He is EXACTLY the perfect complement to Steve Slaton in my opinion. 6'1" 231lbs. and he's a tough runner who likes to pound the ball in and fight for those additional yards. He would be a great goal-line back, and he can also provide as a 1-2 punch when Slaton needs to rest. Another thing is that I think he would really fit well with the "one cut and go" running style the Texans are going for.

No fumbles throughout his 4 year career at Virginia, although he did lose one at the senior bowl

Yes I can see Rashad Jennings as a great backup for "Stevie", though I'm looking at the latter rounds for his backup..Jennings will probably go way early and come to think of it. I'm sure Andre Brown will too..(see original Post)

Hey guys..In my original post, I posed the qusetion of grabin' TWO backs ,not just one...:fans:

I would be opposed to selecting two RBs in the draft. Mostly because we have other pressing needs to amend to, most of which come on the defensive side of the ball.

4th/5th love me some LSU Quinn Johnson 6006 251. played FB but in this scheme could play both as lead blocker, situational short yardage/goaline, great in blitz pick-up, good hands in flats. both underused & low mileage. has potential to be a great NFL player.

6th/7th Bernard Scott, character issues aside best late rd. compliment to Steve Slaton with similar skill set. his footwork, speed, vision remind me alot of Steve has that burst to fear in 2nd level. tremendous 3rd down/situational & special teams addition. also like Kory Sheets, Purdue & Morlan Lucky, Nebraska as depth type rb's.

Also Donald Brown of UCONN blew up the combine.... just somethin to think about

Donald Brown is my favorite runningback in the entire draft. I think we'd have to grab him with our 2nd rounder if he makes it that far.

Not that I'm suggesting this but Denver traded Clinton Portis after his second season with them for Champ Bailey and a 2nd round pick. If Dunta doesn't get re-signed, what are the chances we trade Slaton for a CB!? Slaton for Asomugha... make it happen;)

I've already stated my two that I like. Gartrell Johnson and Glenn Coffee, only because I think they will be there in the 3rd or fourth rounds and can be solid. As for the second back I'd take in later rounds, I can't really say. All the ones I like will be gone by round 2. If perhaps Ian Johnson falls down real far (which I think he can) I'd like to take him.

Like all of those beerlover. With his bad paper....nice slot for Scott. I'm high on Quinn guys. Guys got heart. Any other humane being would of quit on his goal line TD in the bowl game after the first two efforts. This guy didn't. He did what it took to stick the ball in the end zone. He is hooooungry. The guy is cut. He isn't an ideal back up for the TE slot at six foot. But he is a banger.

The more I look at Quinn the more I am impressed. I dont know where to pick him, as he will just be a situational player, but I want him. Football is a game of heart and guts. And this kid has both.

Some times I get hung up too much on forty times. G. Johnson's forty,(what was it 4.69 ?) scars me a bit. Doesn't mean he isn't quick. Doesn't mean he can't stick his foot in the ground read and cut it up. But I am a bit skeptical.

Ian Johnson fits. But he took a lot of shots his first two years. The combine numbers say his body is healthy again. But I have the same question I had when Slaton came out...can he block ?

Seven to ten touches per game....keep Slaton healthy for the stretch run in December. That's what we should be looking for.

I like Coffee also. Not my favorite. But he fits.

I have a question for those that want us to draft Quinn. Are you not happy with Vonte? Does this team really need another FB as little as they use the good one they have now? Ok 2 questions. :)

I think some people like him because he can be the short yardage back that we need but he also has added versatility at other positions.

I don't think we should get him if he isn't the best power back available but I think of it like this: if you were looking for a WR and there were two guys of equal talent, but one could return kicks, wouldn't you take that guy?

< 4th rd. pick represents above average value, under used in a great pro program has better skills for ZBS than Leach, I love Leach too but Kubiak likes to use a big back as outlet 2-3 times maybe more if effective?

Texans have red-zone issues, mulitple areas to improve but bottom line inside toughness needs addressed, have Leach be Quinns lead blocker :bowser: anybody notice any great Pro-Bowl FB's? LaRon McCoy actually became the Ravens feature back when McGahee got banged up. If the Texans select Quinn he will be a pro-bowl FB/TE in two years in Kubiaks ZBS system, just look at how successful Owen Daniels has become. Quinn would be the feature inside TD scoring machine w/better hands in flats & reliable pass blocker for Schaub.

The Denver Broncos drafted Peyton Hillis a FB @ Arkansas behind McFadden & Felix Jones in the 7th rd. great ZBS fit @ RB which he was turned into & very successful until injured. I see very low risk & higher than expected reward as a 2nd day pick, he could also check in @ ILB down in goaline situations

I love the Hammer. One of the best free agents we've ever had. Third and one, fourth and one....Quinn behind the Hammer gives us some sand in our back pockets. I don't mind finessing it most times when you've got SS at running back. But why expose him to unnecessary banging if you don't have to ? Get Slaton to December. If they put nine in the box on us when he's in the game...go for it to A.J. Pretty tough choice don't ya think ? Load up the box to stop the hammer & Quinn...leave Andre alone one on one. Or go with seven in the box and double up A.J.

I don't expect him to get ten touches a game. I expect him to be a special teams demon and come in on short yardage pick up the first down or stick it in the end zone. Why is having this beastie running free in the second level on draws or swing passes, grinding up the other teams LBs, safeties and corners a bad thing ? From my tree anything that is wearing the other team down the first three quarters will only make Slaton better in the fourth quarter. That's what I'm all about. We may have hit a HOFer in the third round last year. You do everything you can to support that.

I had a thread not to long ago about drafting two backs and depending on the players would still be ok. I think my idea was to draft a Shonn Greene in 2nd and someone like Ian Johnson a tough back with speed late 2nd day. Johnson made me eat crow with a terrible last game. I still like the premise as I want to see Slaton's load reduced. Green could be our main guy with Slaton & another fast RB sharing. I'm not so high on Ian J. but Cedrick Peerman Virginia 5'10" 216 surprised most at combine with a 4.45 40and projcted as a 5th round. We need 4 backs and IMO Slaton is one. Moats has not impressed me, but I rarely noted him on field. Nothing wrong with bringing in 2 RBs from draft & I think other needs can still be met.

My appologies for missing your thread and almost duplicating yours...I'm more on lines of drafting two in the latter rounds..5th on into UFA...Shawn Green will be gone by then :brando:

I'll take Peerman in 5th and Gartrell Johnson in 6th as many think he will be there then.:splits:

Yeah from the way it's lookin' now, we probably will get more than 1 RB in this draft...you know we'll select one as an UFA..hell maybe two:texflag:

Am I the only one that really likes James Davis in the 4th? I know he had a bit of a down 2008, but I think he'd be the perfect compliment to Slaton. Plus, he's already used to sharing a load w/ Spiller.

I'd say now that we have 2 4th rounders and a legit DE opposite Mario, that we can now pick up someone for the offense as early as the 3rd round. Before that though, I don't want us even thinking about it, especially at RB.

http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/02/19/wyomings-moore/

Wyoming RB Devin Moore wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, so he had to find another way to get his foot in the door.

Not only did he get in, but he had the first official workout in front of NFL team officials in Indianapolis.

Moore, who grew up in Indianapolis and attended high school there, held his own private “pro day” on Thursday at a sports-training facility near the airport. Fourteen teams attended the “off-campus” workout at which Moore ran the 40-yard dash in 4.43 and 4.41 seconds, had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot long jump, posted short-shuttle runs of 4.22 and 4.29 seconds and a 7.14-second cone drill, and did 27 repetitions on the bench press

I agree that Coffee is a good fit for the Texans.
He's a decent blocker from what I can see.

Against Georgia, Tenn, Miss St, Auburn, Fla, Utah.
He was solid in each game, and did not put the ball down at all.

The Gators was probably luckey to have won that game.
Tebow got away with intentional grounding on 2-10.
Instead Fla got a TD out of that drive.

The Tides could have a 10 point lead early in the 4th.
Coffee already had 120 yd on some 20 carries by then.

Instead, Bama had to go to the passing game, wasn't successful, and therefore allowed the Gators to control the tempo of the game and the clock.
Coffee only ran once in the 4th for 2 yd.
