Every time after a bad game..for years now... ive come in here and pointed out the stupid comments, and made some points about how 1 game doesnt matter.. and tried to put things into perspective for the people run around with their hair on fire every time we lose a game.

Im not gonna do that today cause you people should already know, by now, that one loss does not end a season. It doesnt even say all that much about how the rest of the season will go.

The fact that some of the same people are still in here saying the same crap.. even though they have been proven wrong many times before.. just shows how pointless it is to to try and explain logic and faith to a stampede of frightened herd animals.

So.. get it out of your system.. try not to sprain an ankle while you are jumping to conclusions.

Personally im more interested in next weeks game... to see how we bounce back from this loss.. rather than dwelling on it and trying to figure out how it can be stretched and molded into something that foretells the end of the world.

The Texans Franchise has never had a winning streak greater than 2 games.

What you saw today is what this teams is, not very good. That probably isn't going to change for some time.

Kubiak still has his work cut out for himself. Still a long road ahead, at least we are ready for it and have the experience.

How's that possible when this team has never even had a winning season?

Aw for Christs sakes, we started out with assholes in charge and changed that two years ago and we aren't headed to the super bowl yet. Give me a frigging break. yeah, we sucked today. But I still think Kubes and company will lead us to the promised land.

Just doens't look like it'll be this year.

Just glad we got this game out of the way. Pitts would've have been even harder to play during mid-season. Hard to believe we can be beat any worst then today though.

..even though they have been proven wrong many times before...

Proven wrong? This team has never had a winning record - so, who exactly has been proven right?

Edit:
Oops! I posted before reading the whole thread so I missed this similar post before mine:

How's that possible when this team has never even had a winning season?

The problem with the Texans isn't the fans...this message board...or what somebody might type and post.

It's how poorly they looked today.

If the Steelers had kept their first stringers in they would have continued scoring.

The Texans did almost nothing right today.

This team should be proud of their fans...I've seen so many faithful strong supporters on here.

Oh well. On to next week.

To me there isn't much to say other than the team was awful....pretty much period. Very disheartening.

Baptism by fire for Duane Brown - but he won't face the Steelers every week and he'll improve.

Nervous game from Schaub - rather like his start to the Dallas game, but we know he can play better than that.

An ok start by Green and Slaton giving some cause for optimisim in the running game.

The usual unheralded 100 yard performance from the best WR playing football today.

So - not really that much concern on the Offensive side of the ball. Nothing that can't be fixed, and we won't be playing those monsters every week.

Defense is a different story completely. We've got some decent players and Mario continued where he left off, but what has been so obvious all pre-season, is now a cast-iron fact: This defense is expensive and rubbish. We couldn't stop a London Taxi.

And the truly sad thing is, this was all too obvious even to a football newbie like me. What the hell is the defensive strategy? Where's the passion and commitment? Why can't we cover the most basic passing plays? Why do we give up 10 yards routinely when even a blind man with a bag over his head can see that they're going to run it? And most importantly - why does Richard Smith have a job?

The bright side:

No apparent injuries. Green even took some hits and actually got back up, and AJ is looking relatively healthy.
M. Williams still getting sacks.
Kevin Walter and Owen Daniels still working hard.

Recommendations:

Slaton is fast and a little small. We all know that. He can run up the middle some, but RUN HIM OUTSIDE SOME, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

Front seven gotta learn to grab onto some part of the RB and not let go; don't just bump into him and let'im slip right off of you. Geez.

Secondary, you're getting your butts blocked and handed to you by receivers. Grow some balls.

OTs, you gotta know that those DEs are gonna go right around you if you let them. Push them outside and back, don't just whiff trying to push them backwards like it's a run play. Where's the footwork?

Backfield, we don't need you to run up to the line and worry about DTs getting through. We need you to worry about those DBs and Lbs coming hard around the outside. Duh.

And last, but not least: Mr. Schaub, you cannot throw the ball through defenders. That tactic has been scientifically proven not to work very often.

Having said all of that, we would've lost this game by a touchdown, anyway; so, get over it.

Observation:

Not only did the refs rip us on the fourth down QB sneak call, but they also moved the ball about 2 feet backwards on the pass reception play right before that. We should've only needed an inch or two on the 4th down play, anyway--and it wouldn't have killed them to give us the 1st down on that pass play, because it was very close.

Whatever....I hate opening in Pittsburgh. You don't see blitz packages almost all preseason, and then you gotta face them all over the place in your first game. Personally, I'd much rather face them in mid-season--don't know about dealing with snow, though.

I had some blind faith going into this game, actually predicting a win, but in all honesty, I am not surprised we lost. However, I am surprised on how bad we lost. I thought we would have been more competitive. If they don't bounce back next week against Baltimore, this could be a long season.

To me there isn't much to say other than the team was awful....pretty much period. Very disheartening.

Yep...that was really ugly. I figured the game would be close and the offense could carry the load and then some.

Instead they were dominated on both sides of the ball. It is disappointing.

good post.

We have a FEW really good players on defense, some average players, and a few hand offs. But I have a sneaking suspicion that a GOOD defensive CO would do better.

If we're expected to be a playoffs team then shouldn't we atleast be able to hang with a contender?

This is truly disheartening, many of us expected this to be the year we take the next step, but after witnessing a total destruction of the Houston Texans, I can't say I'm that optimistic anymore. Realistic ideas are ones that won't kill you at the end of the season. Don't expect too much or else you're going to be in a world of disappointment.

Oh btw, this game reminds me of the Buffalo game 3 years ago.

I would have been ok if we had lost to the Steelers, but to get your ass handed to you really sucks.

I was pretty sure we were going to lose but....wow.

We look like the worst team I saw play today outside of St. Louis.

We could very easily be one of the worst teams in the league.

Mario is the only player on our team who played well.

How's that possible when this team has never even had a winning season?

Exactly. Show me the guy (even if it's me) who predicted gloom and doom following one of these blow outs (and we've had far too many in our 6 years) who was somehow "rewarded" by being proven wrong and seeing a winning streak or even great change for the better in the way the team plays.

It seems to me like you're the one Grid who has been wrong all these years. I see these weekly "Just everybody calm down for a moment" posts of yours as being like Kevin Bacon in Animal House trying to tell everyone not to panic and that everything is under control.

How does this work again?

good post.

We all know about the DC, what really pisses me off is the lack of creativity on offense. A JV Junior high coach could have called a better game.

Interesting way to look at it considering the Texans have sucked for 7 years. When you get your arse handed to you like that almost any criticism is valid. I for one jumped to conclusions after the second preseason game. I really came to a conclusion after the Dallas game. This team has no defense outside of Mario Demeco and the injured Danta Robinson. But, being optimistic isn't a bad thing.

On offense, we lost this game in the trenches(surprise, surprise). Yeah Schaub played horrible, but when you give up 5 sacks, and have a grand total of 25 rushing yds. through three Qrts, that's to be expected.:gun:

Proven wrong in the sense that every time things go poorly a bunch of fools start screaming about how horrible we are.. then we go out and kick ass and those people either dont come around or they eat their crow and start talking about how great we are going to do.. then we lose and they again start screaming again.

Many of the people who are now running in circles flailing their arms are the same ones who, last year, were talking about how this franchise will never finish 8-8.. before that they said we would never win 2 in a row..

it goes on and on.. every mistake we make is proof that we are the worst team ever.. that everyone on our team is incompetent and needs to be fired.

You people say "how has anyone been proven wrong when we havent had a winning season".. well.. one guy said that this is a 7-9 team.. another said we will get 6 wins this year and 6 wins next year..another says we dont have the players to make the playoffs..more than one said that. So if we finish 8-8 again.. that is 2 proven wrong. Many others were proven wrong on that account last year when we went 8-8.

If we make the playoffs.. hordes of "fans" will be proven wrong.. of course, once we are in playoff contention they will all be saying that they knew we could do it.

No.. you didnt know we could do it.. thats why you are crying right now. The people who know we can do it are taking deep breaths and looking to next week.

Honestly people.. (I said I wasnt going to do this but i just cant resist)... HOW are you going to sit there and say that this game proves anything? We had a very good offense last year..and we did it with LESS than we have this year on offense. Is it possible that we could have taken a step backwards on offense despite the fact that we have all the returning stars, and some new stars to boot? Sure..its possible.. I just think your an ***** to be stating that our offense sucks after the first game of the season.

Its obvious that we came out rusty and unprepared. It may even take 2 or 3 games before our offense finds itself again. But they will.

How many playoffs teams have lost their first game of the season?

Here is some food for thought.. last year in week one the Steelers beat the browns 34 to 7. The Browns finished the season 10-6.

I'm not a stat person but I was unaware that the Steelers had that dominating of a defense. They just ALWAYS seem to replace pieces on that D that make them good.

Still the Texans have a very good receiving corp and were really unable to sustain any kind of passing game...Matt was getting guys in his face practically all day and making poor decisions....the running game was hit and miss.

The Steelers D is impressive.

Are you high or just yanking our chain? :spit:If the texans come out and kick arse against say the Chiefs I am not going to change my prediction for this year. If they do prove me wrong that would be awesome I would eat the crow without any tobasco sauce. However, I haven't been proved wrong for 7 years now and have no reason to believe that this year is any different.

Its obvious that we came out rusty and unprepared. It may even take 2 or 3 games before our offense finds itself again. But they will.

NFL teams don't do that. That's why there is 4 damn pre-season games. Most teams think that is too much. I guess we need a couple more to get things going.

Unprepared is about the best word you used to describe this team.

How many years will it take for our defense to find itself oh wise and mighty "Carnack"?

I too believe that eventually our offense will right itself. I've just not seen any evidence that our defense will ever get better than 24th best in the league and a revolving door for every running back we play.

Two things to keep in mind, weren't the Steelers very near the top defense last year? and its the first game. I'm not about to jump just yet, but I'm thinking about opening the window. Let's see what happens next week.

NFL teams are unprepared every week. Thats how upsets happen.

Here's the thing we want to explain to you:

We don't want to be one of those teams. Yes there will be bad teams in the NFL every year. We are striving to be a good team.

If being unprepared is ok because other teams are sometimes, then take my name off the Texan Fan list. If that's our attitude I am not interested anymore.

I dont know Herv.. it depends on whether or not any player steps up and starts doing more.. or if our coaches decide to dumb things down/change things to play to our strengths..

Its possible we will improve..and its possible we wont.. its also possible that we arent as bad as we looked (though I am of the opinion that our defense just isnt very good right now, as well).

You dont have to have a top 10 defense to win games.. it just helps alot.

Well then GTFO.

Of course thats not our damn attitude. Dont be a moron.

If you are trying to prove that we arent the best team in the league yet... i dont think there is alot of "proving" that needs to be done.

If we are going to lay an egg and come out unprepared though.. im glad it was week 1. Coming out unprepared in week one is a sign of youth and inexperience. They just got a wake up call...im betting we see a much better team next week.

BTW.. being unprepared is not necessarily the sign of a "bad team"... good teams get rocked sometimes too.. it wouldnt be an upset if the losing team wasnt good enough to have everyone expecting them to win.

Why is it so black and white with you homers?

Who says the best team in the league? Just you. Nobody else has said anything of the sort.

I was expecting a borderline playoff team. What I got was the 2nd worst performance of any team who played at 1 today.

Good points Grid, but here's the thing. First, it's not that the Texans lost the game, it's how. How many times can this team come out and look so ill-prepared to perform? I have seen too many times. Rusty and unprepared-our team has had the same amount of time to get ready to play as everyone else. That's no excuse for playing this poorly.

And to say that this game doesn't prove anything is incorrect. I can't speak for September 14, 2008. But as of September 7, 2008 at around 3 pm, I can say this. Our defensive coordinator still has the defense playing on its heels instead of on its toes. Our coaching staff still has problems making halftime adjustments. And we still are being made to look like we don't belong by some of the Big Boys in the league. Until the Texans prove these points to be inaccurate, I feel like I'm correct in feeling this way. Better preparation and game-planning is what I will be looking for next week.

I'd hoped that the wake up call they got at Dallas in the preseason was enough. Guess not.

With every week that pass, it's a week that we're wasting on developing the new DC and new defense. Best luck next off-season on seeing a new DC at helm.

To all the people who think im wrong, consider this.

At 11:00am today if someone had asked you, "Is week 1 performance a good indicator of what a team's overall performance would be for the rest of the season" would you have said yes?

Some people, like myself, would say "No, a team that has a bad showing in week 1 can often turn things around and have a great year"

Others may say "Not really, but alot of the time you can gauge the talent of a team based on their week 1 performance and make a broad assumption of whether or not that team has a chance at winning alot of games that season"

and some few would say "Yes, if you cant win in week 1 you are unlikely to win many down the stretch".

The third group I dont really care about.. they are always going to look at the worst case scenario.

The first group.. some of you fall into that but are so disheartened by our performance that you have lost site of that fact.

As for you second groupers.. if ya really sit and think about it you will realize that our team is alot better than we performed today. We ARE capable of competing with the best teams in the league and have proven it in the past. Our offense is better than they looked by far, and our defense is young and lacking right now but will most likely get better as the season wears on. Some of you may be sitting there thinking that we proved today that we dont have the talent to compete.. and if this had been week 8 I may be tempted to agree with you.. but its week 1.. and alot can change before week 17.

Im not saying that people should be optimistic right now.. im just saying that you shouldnt be pessimistic. Im worried about how we are going to do as well.. but I have enough faith in the team that im not gonna dismiss them after one game.

Hell, why wait?

It gets more difficult on releasing one of you're main coordinators once the season has started, especially when that season is the one they think they have a good chance of contending for a Playoffs spot. Playoffs team don't release their coordinators during the season, team with no hope can. Then again I don't think we're going to have much chance this year anyways.

If it gets real ugly later on in this season, expect a scapegoat to be sacrifice to the blood-thirsty fans. Most popular choice? Richard Smith of course.

Well.. maybe Rhodes would be interested in taking over the defense for us if we released our DC :D.

Hey, wait a minute. I thought the Texans motto for this year was "Believe in NOW"
