So which "hole" do you fill in our defense?

Which position would you upgrade on the defense if you could just "make it happen"?

BUENO!
I'm just curious about how we've all kind of identified this "unholy trinity" of Weaver, Greenwood, and Reeves and I thought "If I could fix just one of those positons which one would I fix?" and that made me wonder what the general consensus is.

If you could swap out one of those players for a truly "good" player at that position which one would you fix? Ignore salary cap issues and without focusing on one particular player and tell me which level of our defense you would correct if you could do it "just like that".

Tough call between Weaver and Reeves. Since Reeves just got here and I know that Weaver won't cut it in our defense, I say I would upgrade the DE spot. That will help Mario and can take some pressure off our DBs.

I could make an argument for any of them. My initial inclination was Greenwood because we'd get a better blitzer who could apply pressure, a guy able to knife through and stuff the run, and hopefully a guy that could drop back in coverage and be a difference maker.

But... I think I'd go with Weaver. It would be awesome to be able to really get pressure with our 4 down linemen. That might do more to hide Greenwood and Reeves. Maybe.

Exactly.

I give a nod to Polo... we could - and should - definitely upgrade defensively - but that doesn't take Smith off the hook

After thinking about it, the quickest impact would be a Mario clone to get into the backfield faster. That should make Amobi and T.J. more effective. Maybe we could move Weaver to tackle and get some use out of him.

If we upgrade Reeves or Greenwood, you still have a sucky pass rush. Not even Champ Bailey can cover for 4-5 seconds.

4-5 seconds????????...........I counted 8-10 seconds on several plays...........it would be interesting if someone went through a tape of the preseason and tabulate only the time results of the Texans rush........I believe it would be very interesting.

I agree. I hope to see our D get to the QB better in the real season. It is hard for fans to promote a "Bull Rush" defense if it closer resembles a milk cow.

I abstain from voting. I was strongly tempted to vote for a shut down type corner, but you guys make a very strong argument for LB.

If we're just gonna dream-on here with a moneys-no-object kind of wish, a complete fantasy, I'd say give us a lightning-quick edge-rusher like Dwight Freeney or DeMarcus Ware and then move Mario over to strong-side where he belongs.

i voted reeves. weaver can be subbed out for kalu, cochran, and colvin to help with the pass rush opposite mario. greenwood's cocooned between mario and ryans and might sneak in a play on occasion (though without dante to his right he's exposed). reeves however is flawed nomatter what happens with the other 10 players - see jason david. no pass rush, no play design, no outside performance is going to make him into a starter.

you are the weakest link. goodbye.

weaver... we need some serious pass rushing impact from that position, and though i like cochran, i'm not sold on anyone on the roster to provide it consistently.

I'll give Reeves a little more time before I want to get rid of him. He is still getting used to our defense. That being said he needs to tackle better. Greenwood is servicable. This is Weavers 3rd year and still has not done anything. If we can get someone that would put some pressure on the QB that would also help Reeves. So give me someone in place of Weaver.

Reeves will be replaces as soon as Robinson gets back.

It's a hard decision between Greenwood and Weaver though. I'll go with the linebacker unless you're talking about a pro-bowl replacement, in which case it would be weaver.

Everything starts up front with the big nasties. I'd replace Weaver.

Honestly, I could care less how many draft picks it takes to get that DLine. We've got to win the battle up front.

:fans:

Greenwood.

Our LB's are terrible defending the underneath/intermediate passing game...

An upgrade there would help us with run stopping, pass rushing (blitzing), and intermediate pass coverage...

I really like Zach Diles, but to me he is more of a solid compliment rather than a playmaker...I'd like to add another LB that plays on the opponents side of the line of scrimmage rather than on his heels all the time...

If you break the defense into 3 elements: linemen, linebackers, secondary - I assess it this way...

Linemen: Mario is set, anyone else??
Linebackers: DeMeco is set, anyone else??
Seconday: Anyone?? Anybody???

I'm also of the opinion that DeMeco needs to move to the outside. With Amobi being a little undersized and DeMeco being undersized - we are undersized in the middle... Not a good recipe for being able to stop the run...
Of course that still doesn't answer the linebacking corps problems....

Are we really that small inside ?

No.

We aren't massive, but our guys aren't that little either.

And Demeco isn't undersized...He's actually about the norm...

Amobi and Travis aren't all that small either....

Define small then............

Okoye and Ryans:
6'-2" 302lbs. and 6'-1" 236 lbs. seems small to me to stop the run...

Haynesworth and Fowler:
6'-6" 320lbs. and 6'-3 250lbs

You should know small very well. You see the little stack of buttons every day in the mirror. :)

no offense herv, but i can't vote. CC Brown is probably the worst player in the nfl in my eyes. Legitimate safety should be list 1a

We're not massive, but we aren't small either...

That's a misconception that I see has become an epedemic...

Most of the 4-3 teams around the leauge don't have 330lb DT's getting a bunch of tick...Most teams, in fact, have DT's maybe a little bigger (and in a lot of cases a bit smaller) than TJ and Okoye...

I'm not sure where you're getting those weights from, but on NFL.com they have Demeco as 250lbs...

Now I'm not saying he's 250lbs, but if the .com has Demeco listed as a little bigger than he actually is, other players weights are probably slightly exaggerated too....

Anywho...Demeco isn't much smaller than a lot of 4-3 MLB's...and our DT's aren't either...

In fact we are very average....

Everyone was drooling over Frank Okam, but not a lot of 4-3 teams have DT's that big...I don't get the obsession...

Hey! This is one of those trick questions. You know, like whether you would rather be shot, stabbed or knocked upside the head.

You can easily make the case for any of those positions. Lots of great defenses with bookends, or a smart fast linebacking group, or a have to throw to the other side cornerback.

Picking an upgrade at corner, assumes that the CBs won't be told to give so much cushion.

Gun to my head, and with our current defense, I say quality DE. Lots of Super Bowl teams with great bookends.

DeMeco is at least in the 240's. the dotcom lists him at 250...but that may be soaking wet, with stuff in his pockets. Young men fill out to full muscularity till around the age of 25 and DeMeco is still 23

I chose Weaver. I think we could get away with sub-par corners if we had the rush to make the QB make bad decisions.

you gotta be good at QB, protecting the QB, rushing the QB and defending passes from the QB...so I'd cut the dead wood first. Weaver. All I've noticed that he does well is backpedal out of a 3 point stance.

I voted for Weaver. He's a waste of a roster spot, and I'm hard pressed to find any other reason for him still being here other than how much he costs us. Add to it that a better pass rush would help make our secondary look good even with Reeves in it. So replacing Weaver has got to be the priority on the defensive side of the ball.

Weaver. If we had someone to take pressure off of Mario, our pass rush would be a legitimate, consistent threat. That added pressure would help our secondary out big time.

There have been productive defensive lines that consisted of one great player and three average players. Weaver's a weakness, but I can't help but see our secondary as the weakest link on a defense full of weak links. I don't know that replacing Reeves specifically would answer any real questions, but I do know that I would like to see a CB tandem of last year's version of D-Rob before he got injured paired with the end-of-season version of Bennett.

He does that very well, though.

I agree that we should get rid of Weaver. I think we should move Mario to strong-side and plunk in a rotation of Cochrane, Kalu and Colvin (or Thompson).

But I also want CC Brown out of there.

I was pretty happy with our secondary when it was Aaron Glenn, Marcus Coleman, Dunta Robinson and ... heck, I don't even know who was SS back then... but it was pretty decent then.

Maybe Smith will find another free agent from the cuts.

.
it was decent then, but when Aaron left, i turned into a baby.

Mario should be taking pressure of others. We just need someone good enough to take advantage of it, as well as stop the run when they run away from Mario.

It swings both ways. As of right now, Mario is taking double and triple teams because our other players aren't even considered a threat. They need to step up and get to the QB, so that Mario can get loose, etc.

I was surprised I thought it would be way more CB votes, thats what we need!

Yeah but Weaver has been injured for two years and make a lot of money. Not to mention he is supposedly healthy now and so far he has played like Richard Justice writes. You seem him on the field moving about and you know he is trying to do something but what the hell that is you haven't the foggiest.

It is like he is on a treadmill, he is moving but going no where. :jogger:
