Texans/Saints practice report

From the Times Picayune. Not much, yet. Except Mario & the D-line are kicking arse. :)

-Of the Saints' offensive line and the Texans' defensive line, Houston seemed to have the edge during team drills. Saints quarterback Drew Brees completed several passes with his first team, but he would have been sacked at least once - and quarterbacks Mark Brunell and Tyler Palko would have incurred several more sacks.

----Defensive end Charles Grant intercepted a pass from Texans quarterback Matt Schaub during drills.

I don't like Matt with these interceptions..

If you are not allowed to sack the QB in the practice I doubt very seriously they are allowing us to practice our cut blocking. Gibbs needs all the time he can get after the Denver showing. Come on Gibbs!

i really think our preseason games are more important for us that most other teams in the league for this reason. the OL gets basically only 4 true rehearsals before the games count. all of our practices are theoretical in nature where the lineman grabs the Defensman and squares up on him and they agree that he has been "cut blocked" and therefore no longer persue's the play.

that's pretty scary to think how little time we have to perfect this. it's a good thing we have the perfector running the show.

Here's another report. Might be a little biased, but nice to see AJ making DB's look afool again.

Last season in the week 11 match up between the Saints and Texans, Houston receiver Andre Johnson burned cornerback Jason David for a deep touchdown. Early in practice during one on one drills today he did it again. Johnson also faked safety Roman Harper out so bad that when he caught the ball, the Saint defender was at least 30 yards away.

He's just had the one.....unless I'm missing something.

My bad...

I'm speaking cumatively (INT's & Bad Throws)....

The throw he had the other night was plain awful....I'm sitting in the stands and I couldn't believe he threw that pass...

Yeah, after I'd already replied I thought you might've meant that throw.

I agree, it was a bad decision.

Yeah, Sage can be just as reckless with the ball (maybe even more) as Schaub can be.

but to answer your question, the texans didnt have a pick. sage threw a td.

Doh! (in a good way)

Polo was talking about the throw that Schaub made at the goal line on 3rd down. You know, the one into triple coverage that bounced out of McCree's hands. That would've been a 100 yard Int return for a TD. :gun:

Yeah, I remember it. It was a bad decision in a big way. I just had that mortar lob that Ramsey threw to Ferguson on my mind and attributed it to Sage.

Yeah, Ramsey's just a horrible QB. I'm very happy we ended up going a different direction instead of bringing him in here. It just makes me appreciate the talent SmithGM & Co have at evaluating players even more.

:texflag:

Whoever is under center NEEDS to play within themselves and protect the football at all costs. If that means throwing the ball away instead of forcing it into triple coverage then so be it.

Camp report-Texans/Saints-Morning

This one's from the Saints and appears to only point out positive plays the Saints had.

Baldy was there though, so maybe they'll be on NFLN soon.

“This (practice sessions) tells me something important about both of these teams,” said NFL Network and FOX analyst Brian Baldinger, who was on hand this morning. “This tells me right off the bat that you have two well-coached, disciplined teams that understand what the term ‘practice’ means. I’m impressed with what I saw this morning. They got their work in and didn’t get caught up in trying to do foolish things like push and shove and get the last word in.”

After reading these articles, its clear to me that the Saints are MUCH better in at least one department:

Coverage (of their team activities)

There are already at least 3 detailed accounts of the morning practice from the Saints side. Im sure our HT.com people and radio announcers are over there. Why haven't we gotten any updates about our players?

I am pretty disappointed in our news coverage. Im dying to know more about the practice!

Tropic Thunder just came out today, once Mcclain gets out from that he'll go post a blog.

It was almost the same spot when he intercepted McNair(Titans) that he took all the way back when he was playing for us.

Wow. Their coverage is amazing, at least compared to ours.

somebody who knows how, post that picture from HT.com from today's practice of Mario towering over some poor sap as he prepares to eat the quarterback.

What? Isn't it better than turning the football over?

You do know you can't hit QBs during practice right?

Thanks for the all articles and pictures. We're looking pretty good.

Question, are we allowed to cut-block against the Saints? I'm sure they would be pretty p***ed if we did.

Here's a news report from a local NO reporter. According to this dude the Texans were "more upbeat" than the Saints were.

And for barret:

Thanks for the report from NOLA.
The guy had some nice things to say about Mario, except I think he's mistaken when he says Mario got the best of Jammal Brown last year. As I recall, Brown did not even play in that game due to injury.

Another Mario vs. Reggie redux from a couple of Saints talking heads. Hey guys, if Reggie isn't an "every down back" as you say, doesn't that make an every down DE like Mario the obvious better pick?

You had me there for a second. :heh:

Stuff like this has to be really refreshing for both teams. You get sick of going up against the same people everyday for weeks and I'm sure it's nice to be able to judge your progress against someone else.

From what I've seen (read), it looks like both defensive lines looked pretty good in the first practice. Lots of pressure from the edges. Thing is, I know that Brees is one of the absolute best in the league at feeling that edge pressure and stepping up in the proper place to avoid it. It's the middle pash rush that gives us problems. Drew's not the tallest guy and it's a lot harder to avoid a rush that's coming right at you. It's Okoye and Johnson that would be key for you guys to disrupt our passing game (or stunts of course).

Not that any of that matters since we won't see each other during the regular season, anyway. Just my couple cents worth.

I was talking about in games sometimes.

Here's another report. Might be a little biased, but nice to see AJ making DB's look afool again.

I thought I read AJ wasn't going to be practicing and that he might not even play in the game!? Well I guess the good news is it seems he's completely unphased, but I don't want him to be exposed to injury!

Well that's semantics.

If Reggie stays healthy and is utilized properly, he will be an "every down back", just not used in the same way on every down. Some seem to think this makes him less valuable, but I think it just makes him less conventional. Whether or not it's my preference to have someone carry the ball 25 times a game is immaterial. It's obviously not our coaches' preference, and you can tell in the way he's game planned his entire career.

With that said, I didn't watch the video you referenced and have little doubt those guys probably don't know what they're talking about. Especially if it's those couple of young looking dudes that were covering training camp that I'm thinking of.

Cuppacoffee submitted a thread over in our "NFL" section about Bush's new contract, which some of us including this poster are really puzzled about ?
But this was a good session between the 2 Saints fans, even though many of us over here don't think Bush is even in the conversation anymore (I know I don't). But that's why they call them "Saints fans".

"Every down back" were their words, not mine.

It's fair to say that the Saints haven't fully utilized Reggie's skills, at this point. He should see more time in the slot, or as a wingback, to create mismatches. But that's on the Saints coaching staff, or Reggie's preparation. Bush should have spent the '07 offseason with the team. He didn't, and it showed.

I won't lie, Bush could play for the Texans. The team is thin at RB. But, I don't believe he could make the same impact that Mario has. Case closed, as far as I'm concerned. Regarding the Saints pick, I have to wonder if AJ Hawk might be more useful and needed. I don't see much difference in the Saints offense when Aaron Stecker is in the backfield. Brees is the straw that stirs the Saints' Sazerac.
