WASHINGTON (AP) -- Bill Belichick has been illegally taping opponents' defensive signals since he became the New England Patriots' coach in 2000, according to Sen. Arlen Specter, who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told him that during a meeting Wednesday.

"There was confirmation that there has been taping since 2000, when Coach Belichick took over," Specter said.

Specter said Goodell gave him that information during the 1-hour, 40-minute meeting, which was requested by Specter so the commissioner could explain his reasons for destroying the Spygate tapes and notes.

Hey, Houston fans say cheating is alright. We got a World Series appearance on the backs of cheaters.

Hell, the Yankees won World Series with cheaters. What else is new?

As a Cardinals fan I know how it feels to have your franchise tainted by your heros taking steroids. McGwire did the Cardinals no favors when he took the 5th and its still a black eye on the organization and city. The problem with Clemens is that he is so viciferously denying it that its becoming a bigger deal than if he had just plead the 5th or at least partially admitted it.

Thank God, Pujols name wasn't on the report or I would have felt that our World Series Championship would have somehow been tainted. early rumors were that Albert was in the Mitchell...thank god they were wrong.

as for Belichoke, this taints his legacy and it taints the Patriots legacy. any honest Patriots fan will tell you the same thing. Some guys have no class and Belicheat showed that after teh Super Bowl when he ran home to mommy pouting and being basically unavailable to the press post-SB. he is a joke and a scumbag.

So.............I guess this means Goodell will be fired? I'm assuming that would be extremely illegal and that the government would have to do something about it since they're cracking down on baseball so hard. They can't be biased. We all know the Government has plenty of more important things to be screwing up, but they won't let this go.

people have been trying to get the edge in sports since the dawn of Man...that's why baseball has all those elaborate hand signs. This isn't a Congressional issue so Sen. Arlen Specter needs to go work on stripping us of more liberty and our freedom....get back to your real job.

but Vinny if they get football and baseball straight, then people will watch because of the integrity of the game has been restored and then we won't pay attention to what congress is doing because we are too busy watching sports
:specnatz:

The federal government needs to do its job and leave its hand out of sports,
The Clemens thing was an embarrassment to the US. "My Colleague would like to know what uniform you will wear in the Hall of fame". That guy needs to be removed from any form of government and sent home with out a job being paid by us the taxpayers. As far as football is concerned I could not understand what was said.

Did Goodell destroy the evidence or did Bellacheat? If Bellacheat did then he should be banned from football forever, and if Goodell did then fire him.

As long as the sports leagues are allowed to work around anti-trust laws, Congress has oversight. Get used to it. Whether or not they have better things to do is irrelevant, because even when they're not investigating sports, they're not doing anything more productive with their time.

As for firing Goodell .... on what grounds? The Belicheating started before Goodell was commissioner, and Goodell took pretty strong action against the Pats for cheating, once it was discovered. I guess you could argue to fire him for destroying the evidence, if that's where y'all are going, but I think Goodell has been good for the NFL so far. Even if it were discovered that the cheating was much more in-depth than we all thought, and the destroyed evidence would have backed that, Goodell has pretty much put the issue to bed by handing down a verdict and moving on - something many people have complained is not happening with baseball.

I understand why Goodell destroyed the evidence.

1) He didn't want his sport to be thought of as tainted

2) If any more tapes surfaced that means all evidence hadn't been collected because he personally destroyed the tapes turned over

I give Goodell credit for telling Specter the ugly truth. I don't have a problem with him destroying the tapes because they had already been leaked to some extent to Fox Sports and he didn't want anymore leaked. You could also open the NFL to liability issues vis a vis gambling, season ticket holders, etc. Class-action lawsuits are not very fun to litigate against. The details arent important. i do feel Belichik should have been suspended for a year if they knew he had been doing it for 7 years when they busted the Pats vs. the Jets Week 1.

Now when the Rams do this what about the other Superbowls are they going to want to sue also?! Probably so, me I can't stand the Pats but kinda feel sorry for them in a way because they got caught. Watch theres going to be more stuff going against them like trophy wise perhaps I just wonder what else is gonna happen.

Hey Joe, can we see the one about your boys Clemens and Petite and their cheatin' ways?
