Potential/Actual Franchise Tags

A report from Adam Schefter of NLFN seems to indicate that some of the posters' free-agent signing hopes could be dashed by the franchise tag. Looks like Asomugha, Trufant, Dansby, and Jared Allen are early candidates to get tagged.

Some of the highlights (or lowlights depending on who you wanted) are as follows:

"Oakland is expected to slap its franchise tag on cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who would be one of the hottest commodities on the open market if he were not tagged. The franchise cornerback tag this year is $9.465 million. But Oakland knows that on the open market, Asomugha might be the No. 1-rated free agent.

If Arizona cannot sign linebacker Karlos Dansby to a long-term contract extension in the coming weeks, it will slap its tag on him as well."

Also:

"Seattle could wind up tagging cornerback Marcus Trufant, CB tag is $9.465 million, if it can't sign him to an extension. Trufant is from Washington and the Seahawks suspect that the cornerback is unwilling to leave. But those who know Trufant insist he is -- all part of the chess match leading up to and into free agency."

Oh, and for all of those that wanted Jared Allen, well:

"The Chiefs could tag Pro Bowl DE Jared Allen at $8.879 million."

Ravens will tag Suggs without contract agreement.

The Ravens aren't going to let linebacker Terrell Suggs hit the open market when free agency begins at the end of the month.

"We will be using the franchise tag on Terrell if we don't have a long-term deal in place between now and then," general manager Ozzie Newsome said yesterday.

By using the tag on Suggs, the Ravens would give him a one-year contract worth $8.065 million, the average of the five highest-paid linebackers in the NFL.

If another team makes an offer to Suggs (which is unlikely to happen), the Ravens can match it or receive two first-round picks as compensation.

No real surprise. The Franchise tag isn't as painful to clubs as it once was.

The Arizona Cardinals have placed the "non-exclusive" franchise tag on linebacker Karlos Dansby, the team said Thursday.

The move means Dansby has been offered a one-year deal worth just over $8 million, the average salary of the five highest-paid linebackers in the NFL last season. The Cardinals can continue to negotiate a long-term deal through July 15. If Dansby signs an offer sheet from another team, Arizona can match it or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.
 
Chiefs | Team places franchise tag on Allen

The NFL Network reports the Kansas City Chiefs have placed the franchise tag on DE Jared Allen.
 
According to NFL Network, Jared Allen has been designated as a franchise player by the Chiefs.

Marcus Trufant may not be tagged according to a post from another site. Josh Brown may be franchised instead. At the same time....that makes me think that Seattle is about to sign him to a large deal, and saving the franchise tag for Brown. I can't see them giving up Trufant. I'd love it though as long as we pick him up!

I wonder if a kicker has ever been franchised before?
 
Looks like Suggs wants the franchise as a DE and not a LB. He says he played more as a DE and would make more as a DE. Kffl.com says that he and Baltimore are looking for long term deals but do you think this could actually end up making him not being franchised.

Good memory...

Since 2004, 30 franchise tags were used on 24 players (six players were franchised twice).

Of those players, 10 eventually signed long-term deals with the team that tagged them, five of those before they ever played under the franchise designation.

Seven moved on as free when they finally hit the market, four are in line to become free agents on Feb. 29, two were traded and one had the tag withdrawn and became a free agent.

Season: Played in only 12 games with 3.5 sacks.
Fate: Jumped to Eagles for six-year, $30 million with a $9.5 million signing bonus.

EDGERRIN JAMES
Colts RB
Season: Averaged 100 yards a game, scored 14 touchdowns.
Fate: Got four-year, $30 million free agent deal with the Cardinals.

RUDI JOHNSON^
Bengals RB
Season: Ran for a career-high 1,458 yards.
Fate: Got five-year, $26 million deal with the Bengals in March of 2005.

ORLANDO PACE
Rams T
Season: Earned seventh consecutive Pro Bowl season.
Fate: Signed seven-year, $52.8 million in March of 2005.

JULIAN PETERSON

Season: Started 15 games with 87 tackles and three sacks.
Fate: Signed as free agent with Seahawks in March of 2006 for seven years, $54 million.

Season: Became free agent when Eagles withdrew tag in August.
Fate: Signed with Colts in 2005, never had another sack before retiring as a Titan in 2007.

Season: Hit 20 of 25 field goals including two game winners.
Fate: Signed as free agent in 2006 with the Colts for five years, $10 million.

Season: Suffered broken leg after six games.
Fate: Joined Green Bay as a free agent in 2006 for seven years, $39 million.

I think I make a post every year not to get too excited about potential FA's since most teams eventually lock up their better "potential" FA's. It's best to grow yer own anyway!

TRUFANT GETS FRANCHISED

With the deadline for applying the franchise tag less than 24 hours away, more and more teams are using it.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Seahawks have applied the franchise tag to cornerback Marcus Trufant.

The placement of the tag on Trufant and Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha means that Pats cornerback Asante Samuel will be the biggest prize at the cornerback position when free agency opens on February 29.



Damn, I wanted the Texans to go after him....forget that.
 
After Dallas Clark re-signed with the Colts, 10 players enter today's deadline with the franchise tag.

Also, Ken Hamlin got tagged. Not kidding.

That means Flozell Adams didn't get tagged. Of course, Briggs & Samuels couldn't be tagged. The Steelers gave Max Starks a transition tag (can match the offer, but get no compensation if they don't), so Alan Faneca will be a free agent. Randy Moss did not get the franchise tag, but he'll likely re-sign with the Pats.

Not a real exciting crop of free agents out there. I think Michael Turner can make an impact, but a deep RB draft class could hurt his leverage. As far as the Texans are concerned, I like 49ers guard Justin Smiley & Lions OLB Boss Bailey. Both are still relatively young and heading into the prime of their careers. Also, teams will be cutting veterans to clear cap room, and that will augment the free agent pool.
 
I pissed and moaned last year talking about Ken Hamlin and how I couldn't believe the Texans had not even called him down to meet with him.

Sure, he was on the losing end of a battle with a stop sign, so what? He was an upgrade.

So what does he do? Goes to Dallas, becomes a probowler, and then gets tagged.

We didn't resign McCree, we didn't even look at Hamlin. I sure hope we resign Demps. Why does it appear this team has an aversion to good Safeties?
