I remember when the Dynamo were nominated were nominated for some sort of award you could vote for online. One guy set up a script that allowed him to vote 500,000 times and the website never caught on.

The award given to Bob Sanders was the AP Defensive Player of the Year. The associated press votes on that and blah blah blah.

This award is completely different. It's voted by the fans, and GMC sponsors it.

Similar to AP Rookie of the Year and the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Year.

Anquan Boldin won the award AP OROY and Dominick Davis won Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Year in 2003.

Williams also has 55 tackles, of which 39 were solo, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. The total net yardage on plays in which he was in on the tackle this season is 1.5 yards, an average of .027 yards per play.

“I just feel a lot more comfortable,” Williams said of the difference between his rookie year and this season. “I’m just running around having fun.”

Although Williams was not chosen for the Pro Bowl, his improvement has been noticed. Kansas City Chiefs Coach Herman Edwards, whose team surrendered two sacks to Williams, praised him for his perseverance.

“There’s a lot of pressure on kids when they’re the first pick,” Edwards said. “That’s a tough spot to be in. He’s done a good job, and in his second year, all of the sudden he’s becoming the player that everyone anticipated he’d be.”

Oakland Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin described Williams as a “dominant player.”

“We haven’t played anyone with as much ability as him, and I’m sure he’ll continue to put it together and be a dominant player for a long time,” Kiffin wrote in an e-mail message.

Joe Thomas, a rookie left tackle for the Cleveland Browns, said he was surprised that Williams was not selected for the Pro Bowl. Thomas, an alternate pick for the game, said Williams had a rare combination of size, speed and strength for a defensive end.

“He can be as good as he wants to be,” Thomas said in a telephone interview.

Last season, such praise would have been out of place. Williams said that he was overwhelmed by his responsibilities on defense.

Let us rewind to two years ago and the days leading up the NFL draft, everyone was talking about the USC Running Back and Heisman trophy winner Reggie Bush was the prospect that only comes along once in a lifetime, Vince Young, fresh off his outstanding one man show in the BCS Championship, with his freakish talent were can’t miss prospects. Ohya and a guy named Matt Leinhart (two time NCAA National Champion and Heisman trophy winner), were all available to any lucky team.

Suddenly someone dominated at the combine, a man named Mario Williams. He was extremely talented and dazzled the scouts leading to him shooting up the draft boards. I remember not knowing why? So he had a good combine. Anyone remember Mike Mamula? He played at Boston College and in the 1995 draft the Eagles traded up with Tampa Bay to gain the pick. (Just so you know, Tampa took future hall of famer, Warren Sapp). Mamula was relatively unknown but starred at the combine and shot up draft boards.

Mario Williams was the same. Every single highlight package I saw from him, he was running around a Maryland right tackle (who probably is competing in hot dog eating contests) consistently.

Everyone thought Houston Texans was going to take Mario Williams. And a strange thing happened the night before then Texas GM Charlie Casserly signed Mario Williams and he would be the #1 pick over Reggie Bush. I was in shock:thinking:

Really, I didn't realize Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak (the GM and Coach during Mario's first season) were both gone at the end of the season!? I think this guy needs to get his facts straight before writing a weak article about a controversial subject that most people in the national dodge or dismiss.
