Williams also has 55 tackles, of which 39 were solo, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. The total net yardage on plays in which he was in on the tackle this season is 1.5 yards, an average of .027 yards per play.
I just feel a lot more comfortable, Williams said of the difference between his rookie year and this season. Im just running around having fun.
Although Williams was not chosen for the Pro Bowl, his improvement has been noticed. Kansas City Chiefs Coach Herman Edwards, whose team surrendered two sacks to Williams, praised him for his perseverance.
Theres a lot of pressure on kids when theyre the first pick, Edwards said. Thats a tough spot to be in. Hes done a good job, and in his second year, all of the sudden hes becoming the player that everyone anticipated hed be.
Oakland Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin described Williams as a dominant player.
We havent played anyone with as much ability as him, and Im sure hell continue to put it together and be a dominant player for a long time, Kiffin wrote in an e-mail message.
Joe Thomas, a rookie left tackle for the Cleveland Browns, said he was surprised that Williams was not selected for the Pro Bowl. Thomas, an alternate pick for the game, said Williams had a rare combination of size, speed and strength for a defensive end.
He can be as good as he wants to be, Thomas said in a telephone interview.
Last season, such praise would have been out of place. Williams said that he was overwhelmed by his responsibilities on defense.
