Why do Cowboys fans hate the Texans

GlassHalfFull

I am curious for your take on why the Cowboys fans hate on the Texas so much. I know all the reasons Texans fans dislike the Cowboys, but am wondering why the reverse it true.

Is it all because of 19-10 or do they just not like sharing?

Most of them will tell you that the hatred is one way... Houstonians hating on Dallasites and that they don't care enough about Houston to hate us.

I honestly don't think the dislike is as strong amongst Cowboy fans as Texans fans.

It's more fun to question their Texanity. Most people in Houston know who their city was named after and most people in Austin know who their city is named after, but ask someone from Dallas who their city was named after and you'll get the strangest looks.

I think its mostly the other way around. I see a TON more Cowboy hatred and jealousy from our fan base than I see Cowboy hatred to ours. I know of a bunch of Cowboy fans who have taken the Texans as their "AFC team"...I don't see the flip side to that much. I follow the Cowboys closely to be honest....I'd love nothing better than to see an all Texas Super Bowl one day.

Maybe I'm too sensitive, or I know the wrong people.

If you read the comments in the Chronicle, you see a lot of hate coming this way from Cowboy fans. Maybe it is a case of a couple of squeaky wheels making the problem seem bigger than it is.

Mostly from Houston *cough*bandwagon*cough* Cowboys fans, IMO. Not so much from people that live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in my experiences.

I think it comes from arrogance and the self-loathing that comes from bandwaggoning a team that does not represent the city you live in. They need to badmouth the Texans to justify in their minds not rooting for the home team.

I have met a lot of good Cowboys fans, though, and many of them do root for the Texans as their AFC team. But I'd be lying if I said I haven't met a lot of chump Cowboys fans, with their arrogant attitudes and bragging how they've been a bandwagon fan since they were kids.

AGREED!!!!I just had this talk after hearing the insufferable sports radio shows yesterday. Cowboy fans and most people in the Dallas and Ft. Worth area either DON'T dislike the Houston teams or are indifferent. I grew up in Ft. Worth..23 years..and grew up a Cowboy fan. No bandwagon. Having brothers at Texas I also grew up an Earl fan and then to a lesser extent..second team..the Oilers. I remember the Renfro call in the end zone because the Cowboys nemesis was the Steelers. I remember the Astros 17 inning game against the Mets while in high school.

I don't want to come across as an @ss but it is crazy how much people care about the Cowboys losing here despite the fact that Houston has never had a football team to call Super Bowl champs or even AFC champs. If Dallas had a bad year and the Texans had lost this past weekend the talk radio in Dallas would barely have mentioned it or would have talked about how they wished the Texans had done well.

For all the people who say Dallas fans are a-holes so Houston people hate the Cowboys... Look at what you are doing. To me it is the chicken or the egg. Did SOME Houston fans become annoying and full of hate because Cowboy fans talked too much or did Cowboy fans talk too much because Houston fans wouldn't stop hating?HMM

Anyone that started the rumor, needs to stop. The hatred is definitely one way for the most part, and if any is returned in kind it is due to some Cowboy fans finally tiring of extending the olive branch. I know too many fans here and other fan bases, and from day one it has either been support for the new team or indifference. I know for a fact when the Texans won the game against Pittsburgh, if not mistaken, year one, I was in Texas Stadium, and there was a roar of applause throughout the stadium when the score was reported that the Texans had won. And, that my friends, was after the 19-10 loss to the Texans. I know it sounds better the say it is both ways, but it just isn't the truth.

Speaking of bandwagon, I think I can understand what some of you mean. Man, have any of you met the new New England Patriots fans, who by the way, have lived in Texas all of their lives? Some of them gives a whole new meaning to arrogance.

When I went to the last game up in Dallas, I talked to a bunch of Cowboy fans sitting around me who were somewhat nice. They said that they always cheer for the Texans because they will cheer for the teams that represent our state. They had no idea that Texans fans have a hatred towards the Cowboys and couldn't comprehend why we weren't cheering for them as well (when not playing each other).

By the end of the 1st quarter, I consistantly heard Cowboy fans at the game saying: "Geez, these Texans fans are just as bad if not worse than the Eagles fans that come here. What's their deal? And what does the 19-10 mean?"

Then a Texans fan would respond: "19-10 baby! We whooped your butt in 2002!!".
Of course then rolled back the obvious statement from the Cowboy fans: "5 superbowl rings, talk to me then".

Honestly, everyone needs to move on from the 19-10 game. Its gone. It was a fantastic day and a hell of a start to our franchise, but nobody outside of Houston still cares about that game.

And what does the 19-10 mean?

Tells you everything you need to know about many cowboy fans...

It's not like that is meaningless..... What happened that night - had only happened one other time in NFL history!!! Ask an Oiler or Bill fan what 41-38 means..

Well said. As I explained above..its a one way street as far as I have experienced and that includes living all but one year of my life in just those two areas.

When I lived in Arlington and worked in dallas I saw plenty of hatred for Houston. when I would talk to people and they found out I was from Houston they would be rude and say oh your from there and what crappy city Houston is.

This is why I dislike most things about Dallas. I have hated the cowboys ever since Tom Landry was fired.

Heck when I grew up in Ft. Worth I used to say the same thing about driving down here because all you see on I-45 is furniture stores, bad traffic and billboards but once I moved here I loved it and would rather live here than Dallas...Ft. Worth is different. Sports wise though I never heard people bad mouth Houston teams. Still don't when I visit family. In fact many guys on The Ticket..sports radio up there.. openly rooted for the Astros to win and bragged about them being run better than the Rangers. In my first 23 years there I never heard anything bad and people rooted for the Oilers and Astros.

Just out of curiousity, if all the people were rude and talked about how crappy Houston was, why did it take Landry bring fired for the dislike to begin? Also, given that there are millions of fans outside of the Dallas area, do those fans act in the same manner? Personally, I find it interesting to put too much stock into what a group of employees in Dallas in general have to say anyway given when it was time to vote on the stadium initiave, the powers that be, said, no not here.

Botttom line:

Is there a love fest between 9ers fans and Chargers fans?
Philly and Pittsburgh??
New York and New York. How about Buffalo and the Giants!??
St. Louis and Kansas City?!??

I make no apologies for my unabashed love of my home teams and hatred for teams from other cities....... *ahem* especially Dallas. :cowboy1:

That's easy:

John Madden was in Green Bay to announce a football game one weekend
when he noticed a special telephone near the Packers ' bench. He asked
QB Favre what it was used for and was told it was a hotline to God.
John asked if he could use it. Favre replied, 'Sure, but it will cost
you $200. John scratched his head, then thought, what the heck, I could
use some help picking games. He pulled out his wallet and paid $200.
John's picks were perfect that week. The next week, John was in
Indianapolis when he noticed that same kind of phone on the Colts
bench. He asked what the telephone was for and Manning told him, 'It's
a hotline to God if you want to use it, it will cost you $500.'
Recalling the previous week, John pulled out his wallet and made the
call. John's picks were perfect again that week.

Last weekend, John was in Houston , when he noticed the same kind of telephone
by the Houston bench. He asked Matt Schaub, 'Is that the hotline to God?' Matt said,
'Yes, and if you want to use it, it will cost you 50 cents.' John looked incredulously
at Schaub and said, 'Wait a second, I just paid $200 in Green Bay and $500 in Indianapolis
to use the same phone to God! Why do the Texans only charge 50 cents ?

Matt replied, 'Because in Houston, it's a local call...Welcome to God's Country.'.................

I hated Dallas then too... It just so happened that you couldn't help but respect the man (Landry as he was what was good about football), and when some jerk-off from Arkansas buys the team and wants to play big-boy, he unceremoniously dumps 'one' of the greatest head coaches ever.

That didn't start my hate for the cowboys, but it sure did add fuel to the fire.... Look, I hate the Steelers, but I had respect for Chuck Knoll too.

Thanks to all of ya'll who responded. It was a serious question and I am surprised to see so much feedback that the hate is mostly a one way thing.

I had thought it interesting that the Rangers/Astros did not seem to have any of the animosity.

I grew up in Va and the Redskins were my first love, so this explains my feelings toward Dallas. I think the whole America's Team thing backfired on them and caused resentment around the country.

Landry was a class act and while he was there garnered respect ,even among fans that hated the team. Once Jerry bought the team and Landry left, so did any respect - at least on my part.

I understand that...I just want people to know that it is mostly one way and makes you wonder which breeds which. Respect though. :)
In my eyes it looks like we are jealous much of the time...and the Cowboys fans pick at that because it is an easy target. Insecurity is a beeotch.

I'm someone who was a Cowboys fan from birth, but couldn't take it when they brought in T.O. (that still makes me mad...) At that time, I decided to follow the Texans instead, and have been a fan for the last couple of years.

Speaking as someone who was a strong Cowboys fan for years, I really don't think there's much hatred among Cowboys fans for the Texans. In fact, I was really surprised when I started reading Texans boards regularly at how much hatred there was the other direction. As a Cowboys fan, there was plenty of hatred for Washington, for Philadelphia, for Green Bay, but I don't think I ever heard anyone say anything about the Texans. Honestly, the Cowboys get so much hatred from all sides (I believe they've been both the most popular and the most hated team in the NFL), the Texans didn't really register on the "return the hate" meter. I had honstly forgotten all about the 19-10 game until I started reading these boards. I expect this might change over time (especially as some Texans fans push the issue) as more of a rivalry develops, though.

You nailed it for me. It comes across as arrogant from Dallas' side but its really just one of those things most have never gotten and they will jump on it when confronted.

Here is an example. I'm driving home from work yesterday and Matt and Rich on 610 are basically acting like the Texans just won the Super Bowl but doing it because the Cowboys lost..montages, calls of people laughing, etc, etc. I was stuck in traffic and texted something about how it sounded pathetic that they were so giddy over a loss. The text back seriously said something to the affect..and I'm sure it was Matt... of "Dallas sucks, go smoke some crack." How fresh:yawn:

That wasn't even their own doing. They just ran with it. But the love/hate thing seems to make the point.

One man's trash is another man's gold...

I call it civic pride for where I live and grew up!!

From a historical sense, Dallas can't hold H-town's jock. Someone brought it up earlier... "anyone even know how Dallas got it's name?". Pretty easy for us. I think its quite the opposite of what you state Vinny. Dallas' only identity is their football team. Other than that and some cheesy soap opera, what are they known for??

Just askin'.....

See TB and this just isn't true either. Dallas has alot to offer. As I said, I'd rather live here but since alot of family is still in Dallas, Ft. Worth and Arlington I'm at my sisters alot in Dallas. She lives in the nice areas and I'm sure people from here would label anyone a snob or whatever but overall the people are fun and like anyone else. I have a blast when I hang out with their friends. Their "status" doesn't make a difference so it cracks me up when I hear that argument here about snobs. It defintely is alot less laid back than Houston but it depends on what you want. There are plenty of great places to eat, good arts, etc.

I think people saying Dallas is "this and that" is the same as people growing up there saying Houston is the armpit of the state because they only drove through it a few times or never really lived there.

The County of Dallas was named after the Vice President at the time after Texas was annexed. There are various stories if he is the namesake of the city since John Bryan founded the city.

Now Ft. Worth, my hometown..you can't beat it for all things good.:)

I think Vinnys point though is despite your civic pride why would you have to be so angry at what Dallas has compared to here when the reverse doesn't happen. A feud takes two participants and one of them doesn't care in this case. I personally would only move back that way if it was Ft. Worth but I realize each city has its own way of doing things.

As far as the people in Arlington and Ft Worth, never had an issue with them they were very cool and heck most of the time they bad mouthed Dallas, which I always thought was funny.

Honestly I am not jealous of anything regarding Dallas or the cowboys. All I hear is guys I work with Colts Jags and a lot of Cowboy fans bashing the team I like and saying we will never win a damn thing. Thank God they have all shut up about Mario and I was more than happy to keep asking if they thought he was still a bust.

Well it seems my experience is very different from everyone else's. Most of the Cowboys I have met love to bash our Texans, mainly for the 2006 draft. Whether or not that will end remains to be seen. I think there is a giant Longhorn-Cowboys fanbase. The Texans have an Aggie coach, which many Longhorns dislike and bash Kubiak at any opportunity, and many of the Longhorns/Cowboys fans didn't even attend the school. They are the bandwagon guys who jump aboard the ships of the good teams. They root for the Cowboys because of those 5 Super Bowls. They root for the Longhorns for that 2006 National Championship. This has just been my experience though.

Houston is a great town, but that doesn't mean the other towns suck...just because. That isn't civic pride, that's insecurity. Confidence is a place where you don't feel compelled to tear others down in order to feel good about yourself...same goes with sports fan mentalities methinks.

To your first point (edited above), what makes that any different from most any other city?? I think anyone from just about any city in the country could say the same thing(s) about his or her city. Don't get me wrong. I still have family in that area and visit every so often and yes, I enjoy myself.

I agree here. People sometimes make un-informed comments based on 'blowing through' town and what not. I would hope for the sake of argument that those folks would not weigh in on this topic though.

My point is, Houston is percieved as not having an identity or any culture, but my argument is that it does. San Jacinto (history) alone speaks volumes in my book. Add in NASA(technology) and the energy industry and one of few cities that have 4 professional performing arts companies: opera (Houston Grand Opera), ballet (Houston Ballet), music (Houston Symphony Orchestra), and theater (The Alley Theatre), add in TUTS and the Hobby Center, restaurants out the wazzooo!!!

I have too many family members, friends and people I respect from on this board from the Dallas area to rip on individuals there, but I have said this before... I have never met so many $30,000.00 a year 'millionaires' wannabees in one single city like I have Dallas. That's arrogance born out of insecurity... Not confidence born out of security..

I'm not compelled to tear anything down... I know the city of Dallas really aspires to be more like Houston. :)

Should have saved that last part for Blazing Arrow.

I really liked Coach Landry as well. However, in the last few years of his career, he wasn't that effective as a winning coach. Nice, yes, effective, questionable. It appeared at the time that Jerry Jones fired Coach Landry in a rather cavalier way, but we don't know what went on behind the scenes about him leaving the team and how. We don't know what kind of offer Jerry may have made and how Coach Landry may have responded. 29 years is a long time on the job, and sometimes people don't like the proposed changes as they are presented.

As far as hearing guys at work bashing the Texans, by the same token, guys at work bash the Cowboys, same story, just a different team name.

Another thing, I just recently saw a program on the NFL channel about how Tex Schramm handled the players during the 70's, and all I could think was he had a way of doing business that could make Bud Adams blush.

Firing a legend on basically the day you take over operations is just bad form,...... irrespective of the 'behind the scenes' stuff. We also know that Tex Schramm visited Landry at his vaction home near Austin to inform him that he was in fact fired... Again, bad form.

Throw in easy access to beaches and the Gulf of Mexico and The Port of Houston.

I grew up in Houston but moved to Dallas 2 years ago to continue the studies, and frankly Dallas is pretty cool, IMO. I wear my Texans hats/shirts all the time and very rarely (like once the past two years) hear anything negative about it from a Cowboys fan. Now it was a little different when I wore my AJ jersey to the Cowboys-Texans game here last year, but wearing an opposing teams jersey in the home team stadium is a different animal altogether so no hard feelings there. I like the sports-radio and gameday atmosphere more in Dallas than in Houston, because rooting for and talking about the Cowboys is like religion here. If the Texans got this kind of attention in Houston I'd be a very happy man. The Texans haven't built up that kind of mass devotion in Houston yet and it shows. I think Houston has a fantastic community though, and if the Texans can provide an exciting, winning atmosphere for a few seasons then the community response will be huge (remember what it was like when the Rockets were winning championships?)... I'm stoked for when that finally happens. Sure the games are always "sold out", but outside of the stadium you don't run into much Texans exposure.

However, after reading that you might get the impression that I'm a Cowboys fan too and I'm really not. I don't hate them, I don't really hate any team, but I do enjoy seeing them lose. For whatever reason I've always been a fan of the underdogs (which is ideal for being a Texans fan heh), and the most exciting games for me are when I see the huge favorite get shocked by a lesser known team. One of my favorite SB's of all time was watching the Patriots upset the heavily favored Rams, even though I'd bet money on the Rams to win the game. I didn't care, by the 2nd quarter I was pulling for the Patriots to do the unthinkable. The Cowboys haven't fielded exceptional teams lately until this year, but they're a team like the Lakers, or the Yankees (who I also enjoy seeing lose) who have a ton of hype and national exposure every year. You get tired of hearing Galloway and company on the radio here perpetuate their Romosexual man-love fest every freakin day, it's pretty entertaining to hear them back peddle now after they get rocked in the playoffs. Is it jealousy, or just being mean spirited? Nah, I think I just like to be surprised and see some parody.

As I said, I love it here. My life consisted of 23 years Ft. Worth, 5 years Houston, 2 years Dallas, 1 Year Austin, 6 years Houston again. So I like this town better than Dallas.

My whole point is that I just think people here make too big of a deal with this "pissing match" with Dallas when it really doesn't exist on the other side for a majority. As I said I never went to Dallas much, even when I lived in Ft. Worth growing up and in college and when I went to Houston it was to randomly visit a frat bro or we had our Luau Party in Galveston. But from a sports standpoint I never was told to hate Houston teams and never did. In fact my Mom and Dad actually had my 3 older siblings here before moving back East..Maryland.. and then back to Ft. Worth. All I know is when I moved here in 93 for law school I realized the difference here with respect to Metroplex teams and how people here feel and I cheered for the Rockets to win 2 championships no problem despite that.

When I went to school up at TCU in Ft. Worth, people around the city hate Dallas. I never heard anything bad about Houston.

Didn't know you were a fellow Frog

I don't want to come across as an @ss but it is crazy how much people care about the Cowboys losing here despite the fact that Houston has never had a football team to call Super Bowl champs or even AFC champs.

"The Houston Oilers were the first AFL champions, 24-16."

" Julian Spence's interception sealed Houston's 10-3 win and second straight title."

the city of Houston has had our share of championships as well, but unlike some Cowboy fans, we don't have maturity issues that cause us to ask for "one for the thumb" when talking about championship rings.

Didn't know you were a fellow Frog

For whatever I reason, and I am sure many Forth Worth residents appreciate it, I could always separate Fort Worth from Dallas. Two different towns - completely....

And yes... 84 is freakin' Frog!!! BOOOOOO!

"The Houston Oilers were the first AFL champions, 24-16."

" Julian Spence's interception sealed Houston's 10-3 win and second straight title."

HMMM, not sure if that counts:)

I REALLY, REALLY appreciate it. When I first moved down here I would have so many people ask.."so what did you used to do for fun in Dallas?" "Well I didn't live in Dallas,..Ft. Worth." "Yeahm is the rest of your family in Dallas too?"...(slap head)

I don't want to come across as an @ss but it is crazy how much people care about the Cowboys losing here despite the fact that Houston has never had a football team to call Super Bowl champs or even AFC champs.

See, I hate the Mavs equally, so why limit it to just football?!? :)

When I went to school up at TCU in Ft. Worth, people around the city hate Dallas. I never heard anything bad about Houston.

Here's the Stereotype:

You know I am a true fan of my roots when I cheered for them through the horrible years...the Rangers are still having those. I tell you what. I have cheered the Rangers on since a kid when they had the light blue unis. They were talking about how they needed pitching back then in the late 70s. They always have a Jenkins or a Ryan but that was it. 30 years later and they still have no pitching and always sign a bunch of long ballers. Its uncanny how its been the same.

Ya know... I could never really hate the Rangers. Maybe because they play in Arlington, maybe because they don't fly the 'Dallas' banner, or maybe because in someway I always felt sorry for them. :)

This might sound a little like ThreetoedPete but oh well.

My Uncle is a Rancher and he was telling me a story about his Bulls, it goes like this.

On his Ranch they two bulls a one young and an one old past his prime, they had it pretty good sharing the cows and such. Then one day he bought a new huge bull in his prime. While he was unloading it, it was kicking, snorting, causing a big fuss, and he already has his eye on those cows . The young and old bull are staring at him, knowing their time is done with the cows.

Then all of a sudden the young bull starts pawing the ground, snorting, and acting like he's going to charge. The older bull looks over at him and says what are you doin boy, you know he could kill you. The younger bull replies, I just want him to know I'm a bull.

I think Texan fans hate on the Cowboys more is so people know we still exist, we haven't exactly been setting the league on fire. Up here in SA/Austin Corridor we have a small fanbase compared to the cowboys.

I mean nothing negative towards you when I say that jumped off the page at me. Can I assume you don't follow baseball?? Again, I mean no disrespect. Astros and Ranger fans go at it on daily basis. You could call it the Cowboy-Texan animosity in reverse. They stop at nothing to point out the Astros faults when all they have to talk about is one, that's a "1," the loneliest number, playoff win to their name. If memory serves, their playoff record is 1-9. That's not much considering their longevity.

I love the Dallas area and have great times when I'm there, but in the sports world I "sports hate" everything Dallas with the Stars as the exception. (Gotta love the only Texas rep in the NHL) That would change in a heartbeat if Houston got an NHL team, but that won't happen. It's a natural rivalry I like and will take my lumps when one-upped by a Dallas team, the alternative is unimaginable.
