The Wave

Had a rant about this same thing last year...so once again...

stop the wave at football games.

What he said. I don't remember the wave. But Yes, let's not start that crap again. The wave has no place at football games.
I saw it. It was lame. I got scolded by the people around me because I didn't do it.

I still won't do it the next time either. Its lame.

I would like the bull pen to get the DE-FENSE chant going a little more. Actually, I wouldn't mind hearing it constantly while the defense is on the field, but I know that's an unreal expectation.

I saw it and got a good laugh. It will never get past the Bullpen cause most of us are standing and waving our arms anyway, SOOOOO therefore, the death of "the wave." :)

It started in like 136, made it behind the visiting bench all the way to 121 and died. I don't think it'll ever make it to the Bullpen, or at least beyond the Bullpen.

The Wave is a legacy gesture from days of old.

BTW, I thought the Bull Pen was fantastic during the Broncos game and deserved a fan game ball for their collective effort from a visual and audio standpoint.

I think all you people are going to have to settle this with water blasters. :cowboy1:

....don't forget to spray the cheerleaders.

Truthfully, I can tolerate the WAVE better than I can those stupid beach balls!! I DID NOT spend a huge sum of money to get hit in the head, get pushed around by grown men trying to PLAY beach volleyball, and most of all, get distracted from watching my TEXANS because I am dodging a stupid ball!! Those around me know they better keep the damn thing away from me because if I get my hands on it, it becomes history!!

I had begun to think that I was the only one. Thanks!

AND no waive when we are on offense.

Noob football fan rule violation no. 1, cheering at Reliant when our offense is on the field. :dangit:

Too bad the Bullpen isn't filled with passionate Texans fanatics such as yourself. Between the opposing teams' fans and the beach volleyball crowd, it's a wonder some of your compatriots watch the game at all! :shades:

We don't have time for any of that nonsense up in Gridiron, Texas, birthplace of the homefield advantage (as proudly stated by the Houston Texans). :D /chain yank

only because you don't have a free hand since you are scared you are going to fall off the ledge up there.

You are all grumpy old men when it comes to the wave. The wave is a fun thing to do. Get over it.

For the record, I don't consider myself old. And most of the "youngins" today couldn't hold a candle to the "old folks" out there at the stadium.

Back to the topic at hand......

The wave is not appropriate at football games. Why you may ask? Because the wave distracts the fans from the game. It removes the homefield advantage.

The wave makes noise, but not enough to make a difference when we are on defense and are trying to be loud.

When we are on offense, there should be no noise, and the wave creates noise. So the wave doesn't work here either.

It also shows apathy towards the game on the field. It says, "We're bored with the game, lets do something else." That's not the kind of attitude I want to project to my Texans.

Support your Texans - not the wave.

Agreed. Exhibit A:

As you can see the potential energy needs to be harnessed rather than allow it to form into kinetic energy, at the incorrect time, where it becomes an uncontrollable and misguided force.

The wave must die and Joe Texan does not surf. That is not not what he does. :texflag:

We didn't have a beach ball up in Gridiron, Texas but that doesn't mean we were left out. I saw tons of paper airplanes going everywhere. One flew all over the place and a dude in the front row of the Bull Pen caught it. I'm assuming the Texans will limit the size of the pamphlets in our beer holders in the future.

Drunks + paper airplanes = hours of fun

hey, an experienced mountain goat herder has been well trained by Gridiron sherpas to use their toes to hold on to the rocks. Otherwise, explain my Texans towel waving in one hand and the Texans big finger display on the other hand (don't ask about the big finger when I'm holding a drink!).

High altitude cheering has been raised to an artform up here, for one must yell during the exhale while breathing in life-giving oxygen through the nasal cavities. We do offer private lessons in simultaneous inhale/exhale breathing (for a small nominal fee).

We must also possess eagle-eye like vision, for the action on the field from the upper perspective might overwhelm those sitting at sea level. Vision exercises are recommended to increase your viewing pleasure.

Perhaps one day, with proper guidance, you might have what it takes to wear your own Gridiron, Tx. wristband! :cowboy1:

Occassionally opposing teams' fans do find ways to entertain themselves. ;)

The wave is always behind me so I could care less although it is a stupid hipnotec thing. I do not have a problem getting hipnotized but the wave is too late the Texans already have me 5 hours before game time. I do like the "M A R I O, M A R I O". I like the fact that teams come all the way down to the 10 And get held out of the Bull Pen. I do not like them getting 3 but I do like the Defense. I love the fact that I cannot hear a thing when they are creeping in. And most of all I like the delay of game it sometimes causes.
The Bull Pen truly is the 12th man of RELIANT. I say we call it the GIANT OF RELIANT, BULL PEN YEAAAAAAAA!

You ain't never been up to GridIron, Texas... NEZ obviously.
The paper planes were funny, but I did have a bit of Texans tea before the game...

DB, you got Rep. That post was the greatest! :texflag:

Aren't you doing the wave in your avatar?

The Wave is Cool.

Actually the principle behind the Wave (which I can't recall exactly but it has something to do with the lowest common denominator) is also alive and well in the form of the Landry's Helmet Shuffle. Kids excluded from the generalization of course. I saw grown men high fiving the other night when they guessed helmet number 2.

Well, this is the first that I'm hearing about these objections to the wave. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with doing the wave. I see it as a symbolic sign of unity for fans for a brief moment during the games. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. Do I personally join in on the wave? Not really. I'll raise my arms but I won't get out of the seat. When my boy is with me, you better believe I'll be jumping up for the wave. I enjoyed them tremenously as a kid and certainly does my boy today. I'll keep doing them because I'm there to have a good time with my family and I certainly won't let any grumpy Guses try and ruin my time with my family for scolding me for the wave. I'd like to have fun with everyone and the wave is a good way of doing that. I get what some of you guys are saying but don't you think lightening up a little bit here is warranted? The wave isn't intended to spoil anyone's fun but only add to it for a couple of moments.

I really didn't think anyone had a problem with the wave. I can certainly understand the beach balls but the wave? I dunno, guys. I dunno...

If you take part in the wave while our offense is on the field, expect to be given the glare reserved for noobs. Cheering for our offense while they are at the line of scrimmage, or any other general distraction, is not intelligent football fanatics behavior. Cheering for the offense should be reactionary, in that they do something good and we react. Otherwise, we are just making their jobs harder and negating the "homefield advantage".

The wave during defensive stands....it's a double edged sword. All that energy should be focussed towards screaming your head off when the playclock is running, trying to disrupt the timing of opposing teams' offensive signals and snap counts. The wave generally distracts fans away from the game, so it's probably not the best course of action if we want to establish a rabid atmosphere that actually impacts the course of the game.

Now, during television timeouts, quarter and halftime endings, I'd say go for the wave if it's something you enjoy. It's all a matter of timing, though. Football has strict guidelines for determining optimized homefield advantage. This ain't baseball where you just cheer when something is finally happening.

Sorry, DB. I disagree with this too... If you have that much energy during time-outs, you are not expending enough while on defense.

Just sayin'........:pirate:

Well, I'm giving the pro-wave crowd a loophole. I'm not a participant in the exercise, but I can understand the desire to keep it fun for the kids. I'd be lying if I said I didn't like the wave as a wee lad, before falling off the deep end and devoting myself to hardcore fanaticism.

My own take is that I'm there for the game 100%. They could do away with all the other window-dressings, including cheerleaders *gasp!*, because my focus is on the field.

But it is entertainment, so there is something available for everyone.

I hear what your saying........ But the cheerleaders?!? May you rot..... :jk:

From what I could see the Wave actually made it around 95% of the stadium....dying down and picking up steam....distraction...(well I saw it) and I always see the beach balls at every game too....haha
Never actually participated in the wave..prolly never will either..and I'm definatly not old

The wave seems appropriate at baseball games. Probably because there's a constant lull in action between pitches and between batters. I've never seen a successful one at a football game. If they did it in between quarters, during the two minute warning or during a timeout I'd have no problems with it. During the game though it seems kinda dumb
