Free Agent O-Lineman

Who are the Free agent offensive lineman at the end of the season and which ones match our "hybrid" system that we run. We really need help bad on the line as usual.
 
I don't we're running the "hybrid" scheme more out of neccessity then want IMO.

I feel on both sides of the ball we need an indentity with what we're wanting to do offensively on the line and what our defense is about. Just not sure about Richard Smith and the clashing styles between Kubiak and Sherman.Offensively I think it's time for Sherman to part ways and Kubiak to mold the offense himself. Skill positions i really like what we're doing but the line needs to be figured out. Defensively Maybe it's time for Frank Bush whom Kubiak, orginally wanted, to step in. Personally I'd love to get someone from Jim Johnson's Staff in Philly.

Well you know best there G. S. But one question...How is a presure defense guy going to help when for three seasons they send six and no one gets there ? It's not the scheme. It's the tallent. Sooner or latter you guys are going to get it. BTW, it is being reproted the last play of the game they sent them, left Dante on the Island and he got beat. Once again, no one got there.
 
Fanaca I believe.

But who knows what sort of guy to target anymore. We go after a ZB type guy, and throw him into a man-over, 3 technique, power blocking scheme that completely eliminates rails and quick cuts.

The only thing I have against Faneca is he is on the worng side of thirty I believe. Pitts isn't an all pro but he isn't the main problem either.

Very frustrating they anounced they are sticking with the same five this week.
I guess it comes down which piece fo meat they are going to feed to the chargers front seven this week.

My understanding it was a 6 man blitz, where were our safeties? CBs should have had help, even DR.

At least some of the players may disagree with you as well as late in the game Kalu and Mario were in an obvious conflict on the sideline with Jethro Franklin. Kalu had to be restrained by Maddox at one point and then walked off in disgust.

Signing for Faneca would be asking for dead money--he wants a last big payday on a contract he almost certainly will not play out. Be better looking at younger guys like Ryan Lilja, Max Starks & Jake Scott.

I'm not saying we're the most talented team on either side of the ball. I just think we need to figure out what we're going to do with the offensive line. It's hard find guys that'll run both schemes and honestly I'd rather us do one of the other...I think current personnel looks better suited for Zone.

On Defense I know we don't have the talent in our secondary but our front seven for the most part plays well...we just need to figure out what we're doing. Are we a Zone, Tampa 2, obviously not a man up pressure Defense.

I'm not saying we have the talent yet but if we have a plan of what we're doing or what we want to do. We can put pieces in place.
 
Weary is a UFA- so the first question is his value as the Texans future RG, how much is he going to cost you to retain his servies? I beleive the Texans are still constrained by thier cap situation so limited funds will be available. If they do commit to Weary he is your Houston Texans RG, Winston is the RT then you have White @ Center (who looked better in the 4th qt. against the Titans) it looks like Flanagan will be down the depth chart & McKinney will have difficulty returning this late in his career plus steep price tag, Studdard should be the swing guard/depth behind Pitts/Weary & hopefully Frye can back up the tackles.

Last year we re-signed Ephraim Salaam & brought in FA Jorden Black as insurance in case Charles Spencer could not play, well the worst happened. very unclear what will happen @ LT, unless you've got cap space & can sign a clear upgrade via free agency you almost have to draft one in the 1st rd.

But I do agree the Texans have to identify a long term solution to the type of linemen they want & get them put together yesterday to move forward both in the running game & passing department.

An aging veteran, Brown has a lot of experience opening holes for backs and allowing time for passers. He’s a solid guard who holds down his position quite well. If he decides to stick around, he may have a couple of good seasons left. Teams won’t line up to sign him, but there should be a handful that show interest.

Alan Faneca, UFA, Pittsburgh Steelers
Faneca seems to be the most likely of this group to leave his current team. Rumors suggest that he plans on leaving after the season and has not discussed an extension with the Steelers. Faneca is a quality guard who has started in five Pro Bowls and been selected as a first team All-Pro five times as well. He also still has some prime seasons of his career remaining. Faneca will receive the most interest at his position, could be the most coveted offensive linemen after the season, and should also be one of the most coveted players available in all of the NFL.

Ryan Lilja, UFA, Indianapolis Colts
A quality guard, Lilja is relatively young and has a Super Bowl ring to call his own. The Colts will do well to sign him to an extension, but there’s a chance that Lilja tests the market. In reality, the system that Lilja plays within is a nice fit, and he could easily stay because of it.

Max Starks, UFA, Pittsburgh Steelers
Starks is young and massive, and another Pittsburgh player that may leave the Steel City. He’s 25 and is listed at 6’7” while weighing 337 pounds. His size and age will make him a desired player on many team’s list. A top tier tackle will always garner interest and Starks may lead the free agent class at the spot because of the high level of play he has shown on the field.

Floyd Womack, UFA, Seattle Seahawks
A big, experienced guard, Womack could get a decent offer from any team missing out on a top tier target like Faneca. If Womack isn’t the outright starter in Seattle this season, look for him to find work elsewhere with an expanded role guaranteed.

Jake Scott, UFA, Indianapolis Colts
Scott is the starting right guard for one of the top offensive line units in the entire NFL, and his ability to help protect Peyton Manning should equate to a nice contract number. Indianapolis has found a way to retain most of their line talent in recent seasons, and it should come as no surprise if Scott is locked into a long-term deal in the near future.

i'm not sure why you'd say that unless you expect someone to give him a very long contract. faneca's only 30 right now (the average age for our line is 29), and has only missed 2 games in his 10 year career. i havent watched him in a while so i cant say whether he's losing his legs or not, but i'm sure willie parker is lobbying pretty hard to keep him.

faneca's one of the best guards in the league right now. he's very strong in all areas, technically sound, and has great legs as a pulling guard or run blocking at the second level. i for one would love to have him.

He is going to be 32 next season and his behavior has shown he wants a big last contract. Some team is going to sign him to a 5-6 year deal.
 
If Spencer comes back I think we have our RG of the future. I still refuse to believe that he will be an effective and consistent LT. I think Weary could also slide over to C, but we may actually be able to let him walk.

LT - Your guess is as good as mine. I wouldn't mind trying Winston.
LG - Pitts w/Studdard as reserve
C - White or Weary
RG - Weary or Spencer
RT - Winston or Spencer

Adding a Fanaca, while I don't support fully putting that much money into him, would solidify our line. We need to look at the teams with a consistently good running game and take those linemen while they still have a career.
 
I think Max Starks would be a good fit here.

If the Texans have 30+ million to spend next year, signing Starks and/or Faneca would really do wonders for our line. Considering we don't have a 2nd round pick next year, it would be huge, IMO.

Problem is, we gotta get `em signed.

Just because we have available money to spend doesn't mean we have to spend it right away. We need to be smart about the contracts we lock ourselves into. We need to address a few issues this off-season. I feel a premier CB is our biggest need. I don't think Starks fits into the offense our personnel is geared towards. I think Studdard will be a very solid guard for us and I did not mean to leave him out of the above list.

I disagree. It seems like every year we have more "Pressing" needs, and ignore the line, with the exception of 2006, when we drafted Spencer and Winston.

I personally have seen enough of Salaam, and if the Texans don't get someone in here to play a competent LT, they are going to ruin a 2nd straight QB.

McKinney signed 4 year contract in 2006 and this month turned 32yoa. His projected salary hit next season is $2,100,000 including bonus.
