Tarik Glenn Retires??

this is indeed good news. everyone knows that peyton can't perform if he is pressured by a good pass rush.

this is good news. i wonder what this is tied to? sick of game? money grab?
 
This is sweet. I love it !
People may appreciate more than ever why a competant LT is such an important ingredient to a successful NFL offense.
I've read very mixed reviews about the rook OLT Tony Ugoh, who happens to be a local native who went to Westfield HS before selecting Arkansas. If he is somehow who the Colts go with to protect Peyton's butt, Mario should really have an opportunity for a good day (actually 2 good days I guess).
 
While there obviously is going to be a drop off in talent, Tarik is easily a top 10 maybe even top 3 LT, I wouldnt expect a sack bonaza in Indy. They obviously have a system in place and have very successful with it. Peyton can perform with defenders around him, no one can hit an open WR with a defender hanging off of them.

But yeah - this is a good thing for the rest of the division. Seems like a pass rush is the way to win (as opposed to trying to out score).
 
YUP.. Heard this, this morning. Great news for Texans "D" in theory, but we will have to see what the dolts do about it....

That's really it. What do the Colts do about it? We've seen over the past 5 years how hard it is to find a LT if you don't have one and it's not like the Colts will be drafting up in that "LT zone" of the draft where the elite prospects get taken. Even with a post Super Bowl collapse they'll be drafting in the middle at worst I think.

If he really is gone then they're going to have a hard time finding his replacement. They can get a player to play the position but replacing a guy like this is tough to do.

I bet he comes back before the end of training camp. I bet he just doesn't want to go to camp. They'll talk him out of retirement a couple of weeks before the start of the season and he's back in the starting lineup in week one.
 
I'll be surprised if he actually does retire. Even if he doesn't I want to beat the Colts at their best. As the old saying goes "You've got to beat the best to be the best".

Personally I don't think your average fan will notice much of a difference. The Colts' coaches are smart enough to plan for extra protection on the blind side, and Manning is consistently the hardest QB to sack each year. Whether it's double teams or zone blocking or whatever, I don't think this is going to turn the Colts into an also-ran by any means.

I agree.

And really I think it stems back to who they have behind center. The colts weren't om the 'teens' last year in sacks allowed because of Glenn. Thats a product of the whole offense working in synch, and the guy who is supposed to provide the rythm and pulse of the offense is sill there taking snaps last time I checked....

I agree as well on this. The rest of the linewill still be there and they've worked together for quite some time. I'm not sure who will be the guy starting if indeed Glenn does retire but i gurantee you Ugoh will get solid reps there this TC. I'm sure the colts figured they had about a year or two left with Tarik that's why they made the move to get Ugoh.

I'm not going to be naive enough to say this is the demise of them because they've drafted well and this offense could very well be even more dangerous this coming year with Anthony Gonzales brought into the fold, a healthy Dallas Clark again, and last year the emergence of Ben Utecht.

I'll also add that if Glenn does indeed retire Manning won't allow the LT to drop off a lot. He'll have the guy ready and know what he needs to do and what to do.
 
BTW, don't get me wrong... I'd love to be able to say "The Colts are doomed!" They're the Pats' biggest AFC rival, obviously. But while I think this will hurt 'em a bit, "tis just a flesh wound," as the Black Knight would say.

When the HC, especially a coach who is as beloved by his players as Tony Dungy is, and the top front office suit request a sit-down with you, a guy can be persuaded to change his mind. Then there's the thing about that big check-book they bring with them to the sit-down.
Dungy just needs one more year from his veteran LT to transition to an OLine without him, and I'm betting he'll get that worked out with Glenn ?

Good point and how much ya want to bet Peyton will be in that room too? They have a legit shot at repeating as well that should get mentioned and they will havea killer O next year.
 
Does the reported retirement of Tarik Glenn make Payton Manning more vunderable? It looks like his replacement will be rookie Tony Ugoh who the Colts drafted this year. I got to believe that Manning will bite the dirt more often than he has in the past. Would love to see him "rattled" on a regular basis this season.

Tony Ugoh is too raw to play right now unless he takes drastic steps towards his vast potential before the season gets under way. It's not so much the drop off in talent though that I feel will be the most significant loss to their line. Rather, I feel it will be the absense of a leader, a steadying force, a constant. Glenn has meshed with the line and team, and it will take time for someone else to duplicate this. It's good to see Glenn go, but I would rather see Saturday leave as well.
 
Tarik Glenn confirmed this evening what had been reported since late last week, that he is retiring after 10 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.
Glenn, 31, made the official announcement at a press conference at the team’s West 56th Street complex. Team president Bill Polian was at his side.

The Colts selected Glenn with the 19th overall pick in the 1997 draft. After a prolonged holdout while his rookie contract was being finalized, Glenn started all 16 games in 1997 at right guard. He then moved to left tackle in ’98, which coincided with the arrival of quarterback Peyton Manning.

This is a big deal !
 
I don't care who you are, you can't convince me that this retirement will not have a noticeable effect on the Colts. Peyton has had Glenn there on his blind side since he was fresh fish out of Tennessee.

No matter how small the effect that this has on Peyton's peace of mind (and ability to not get decked by defenders), it is only good news for us.
 
The depth chart per NFL.com isn't really stacked or at lest doesn't appear to be at T.

What i'm curious about is the cap effect Glenn's retirement will be. Will Glenn be off the books this year? If so that's an extra about 6 Million off the books. Even then i could see them bringing in someone a bit more experienced to at least look at in TC and Pre-season.
