I'm amazed at how many teams have players missing from their OTA's. For example, in New York Burress, Shockey and several other starters don't bother going. In Dallas, Owens, T. Glenn, Julius Jones and several others don't show up.

If memory serves me correctly we have had full participation at both the OTA's and mandatory mini-camps. Why is it so much different in Houston?

Reasons:

1. Hard to think you are above practice when your team stinks.

2. Texans tend not to pick the sort of players who hold out. As has been said to me by someone with the Texans, guys with attitudes tend to stand out as being weird in the lockeroom--it is abnormal not the norm.

3. Kubiak has their respect. He is someone that you want to follow, and has made it clear that those who practice well will be rewarded with playing time.

4. New system. If you aren't there, you would be behind. The offensive system is totally new, and the defensive line coaching is different.

5. The best players for the Texans have been tapped to be leaders, so they can't cheese out on practice. And the worst players for the Texans can afford not to be there.

How is the Offense system absolutely new? Scheme(s) might have changed but when you look at it we have the same coaches from last year. Not like they're going to scrap everything from last year and bring in a 100% new system. Kubiak has already said Schaub knows our system that its a matter of terminology. I'm confused here. Isn't it year 2 for everyone else? OL scheme is now a hybrid of GB/DEN but the players would have seen bits of it last year.
 
For the record, most Miami guys hold their own internal OTA's. They also seem to be very successful in this. Not saying much for teamwork but the results can not be denied. (AJ being the exception not the rule)

Most of the newness is the fact that with a different QB with different strengths and a new starting RB with different strengths, both of wich are definate improvements over last year, the playbook has been opened up to accomodate this. Carr could not be trusted in a 2 min drill, Carr could not be trusted in a shotgun formation, and so on down the line. so yes I think we will see a drastic change in the offense this year in scope and in complexity.

the defense not so much, but now we have a major force in the middle of the line (Okoye) and a healthy Mario so that playbook will open up as well in the pass rush category. It's gonna be fun to watch, thats for sure :)

They have opened up the playbook but the playbook is also different. I can't remember the article but apparently they are using a hybrid Green Bay-Denver scheme. They are going to look to see how things work during OTAs and see what looks good and not so good.

Nobody knows what a hybrid Green Bay-Denver scheme looks like under Sherman as OC. Could be awesome. Or not so much. Nobody knows.

Lots of new pieces and parts. Sometimes that works right away, like in New Orleans, but typically there is more of a learning curve.
 
I would also argue that there are very few Texans who are lock solid with starting and/or roster spot.
 
A lot of guys like to work out in Arizona or Florida because the heat brings an added challenge to workouts. They get that PLUS humidity in Houston.
