Article "Why don't the Texans get it?"

Brando

Hall of Fame
David Carr did what he could at quarterback, struggling to a sub-1:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio but completing 68.3 percent of passes; ultimately, Carr's rating was higher than that of guys named Hasselbeck, Favre, Vick and Alex Smith.

The defense, meanwhile, ranked middle of the pack against the run while finishing a mere 30th in interceptions.

So how does Smith, the current G.M., address these issues in a free-agent period when everyone -- including Houston -- has lots of bucks to blow? By signing Ahman Green? And Shawn Barber? Huh?

Only with the Texans -- steadily gaining a reputation as a Draft-Day choker -- could the first-round selection of Amobi Okoye be questioned. You've gotta wonder, though, why Houston sat back so passively. The Texans must have known Joe Thomas and Levi Brown wouldn't be on the board by pick No. 10, right?

Houston finally made a feeble attempt to address the offensive line "issues" with picks No. 163 and 183, going with Brandon Frye and Kasey Studdard. The latter may actually be a perceptive choice here, though he's low on the depth charts right now, to be sure. Frye is essentially a huge gamble.

'eh, who cares. We'll be one of those teams that nobody gives a chance but surprises everyone.

I am fairly certain that Kubiak knows the importance of an offensive line, so I have to be confident that he's got it under control. Besides, having a QB with a clue can make an o-line look a lot better.

just another loser 'journalist' who blames everyone besides David Carr. I guess he still thinks Carr is good just because he was drafted #1 by a braindead ***** named Casserley. Being drafted #1 doesnt make you good. It makes you rich. Only hard work, true professionalism, and a drive to be the best can make you good. Carr never displayed these attributes while a member of the Texans.

hopefully the Texans will make all these talking heads eat large amounts of crow next year. this writer lost me when he criticized us for not moving up to take Brown or Thomas. We would have had to give up next years #1 to move up to #3 for Thomas and Brown projects more as a RT and has some injury questions. Okoye was the best player on the board. We drafted him. I thought it was funny how McShay had the Skins taking Okoye at #6 in his final mock draft but then slammed us for drafting him when he fell to #10. Just another hater.

Key Offseason Additions
Schaub
Okoye
Green

Key Offseason Losses
Moulds
Carr *edited*

I think we did pretty damn good all things considered, and we got Schaub and Green without having to overpay salary cap-wise and got rid of an albatross in Carr. Color me happy.

yep - I don't think it is sheer coincidence that we didn't draft a linemen on the first day of the draft and no team sought David Carr the FREE agent as a QB. Nobody had to give up a draft pick....but nobody wanted to sign him as anything more than a back up.

I care. I know it shouldn't matter but I AM getting tired of being the laughing stock of the league. I'm very happy with how the Texans have done things this off-season but I'm also banking on this changing the franchise around and ending all negative speculations. I'd just really like to see us being put forth in a positive light in the media for a change. The Texans are my team and they will not be dismissed easily.

That won't stop till we win....the Bengal fans, the Lion fans, and the Cardinal fans have all have stated the same things over the years. Nothing changes on the national landscape till we change it first.

I know you said Carr was an albatross but he has to be a key loss. As bad as he was, he was our starting QB.

He was only our starting QB because the owner of the team was behind the decision.

Being a starting QB does not automatically mean that you're an asset. Just ask Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson after they won Super Bowls and were jettisoned from their teams the next season.

unbelievable these guys. nobody has a clue, i have several bets going based on my faith of our defense, i think they will be top 10 this year. and for the offense there are alot of unknowns but i think our fo is the best we have had and they have shown what they can do so far and i am putting all my faith in them to make the right choices.

I've seen one-celled amoebas that were more insightful than this guy. A dried pinto bean could come up with better than that garbage.

Inaminate objects could outscore him in an intelligence test. :devilpig:

Nuff said. :texflag:

I dont have a problem with the article about our O Line (although it is getting a bit redundant and this writer gets a 0 out of 10 for originality), but afew things jumped out at me that made me scratch my head. Problem 1 is that this article makes it seem like O Line is the biggest need for any team in the NFL and our only problem on the team which is by all means untrue. Is it just me or did he try to play down the situation about our pass defense when he said "a mere 30th in INTs"? Last time I checked, there were 32 teams in the NFL so 3rd to last is by no means something to neglect.

Problem 2 is when he says "why Houston sat back so passively. The Texans must have known Joe Thomas and Levi Brown wouldn't be on the board by pick No. 10, right?" My big problem here is that with only 6 draft picks (and 6 next year), why would we go and trade up on 1 player? No player is worth an entire draft (sorry, Mike Ditka) and unfortunately this article is suggesting that.

My last problem is the sheer implication he does and the suggestion that we go 3-13. To be honest, who have the Texans lost to suggest that? We lost Carr and Moulds - thats it. He also assumes that Carr was the better QB for us in this situation without having seen Schaub play an entire season (which nobody has in fact). He also assumes our O Line will suck this year too, which may or may not be true. It just kills me how this guys solution to the problem is drafting 1st round OL year after year, and trading everything to do so. Kubiak and Sherman have a plan in place for our O Line and I have faith in it more than I do with this guys plan by a long shot. We just need to hurry up and get to the regular season so guys like this and ESPN will shut up! It kills me when ESPN makes us out to be the worst pass pro team in the league when we actually were 24th overall.

Yeah, this guy obviously only looked at stats, and has never actually watched a texans game. But it seems like he only half looked at the stats. Im sorry, but a guy who just rushed for over 1000 yards while not even playing the full season is not "so done". And he really knew nothing of Schaub calling him only slightly more mobile than drew bledsoe??? That is one of the problems w/ the internet, now any moron can be a "sports writer"

At the end of the day, it's just another punk-@$$ "journalist" who I will be laughing at in a few months.

qft....you could even throw Saints fan in there

I think were pretty close to competing for a playoff spot. It's gonna be tough to win a division title with Manning in our division for the foreseeable future but a 9-7 or 10-6 wild card run could be within our grasp by 2008. We have a lot to be hopeful about. If Green can protect the football, we get a huge upgrade at RB. If Schaub plays like he played when Vick was hurt, we will get a huge upgrade at QB. Considering the fact that our defense is showing major upside, we could be a dangerous team. We finally can throw passes over the middle of the field without relying on passing lanes or rolling out. Let's not forget that either. I can't wait for this season. Most anticipated for me since Year One's opener v Dallas.

The thing is we HAVE changed it. 6-10 may not be our best season when we look at the 7-9 we had but the coaching aspect of our franchise changed and we gained 4 wins alone there. Respect should be given. AT LEAST SOME! Naw... according to them, we're neglecting key needs.

What I'm trying to say is that why doesn't anyone want to give us a chance with Schaub. Many of their questions about our offensive line should be answered at the end of the season. The Texans fans felt that our offensive line isn't too shoddy and I have to agree. Many felt that the problem was Carr and we have now renewed our efforts. It took us five years to rid ourselves of the Doom Capers. That's really not too long if you want to think about this team as of being in rebuild mode.

We have a new QB. Our offensive line is different. Our defense has been revamped. Our coaches took over a complete train wreck and now have made strides. 4 wins is huge anyway you look at it. I attribute those wins to moves made by our coaches. Dayne. DeMeco. Leach. And so on and on. We did this with a horrible learning curve.

We really haven't changed...we are still losers till be prove otherwise. Nobody on the National level is going to think otherwise till we win more games than we lose.

if you think about it the Texans have only been around 5 seasons, so you can't even call us long-suffering fans or anything like that.

Have the Texans made mistakes? Lots of them and some real head scratchers in there as well. But ever since Casserley left, we have gotten more and more momentum and started making smarter moves. Our caproom space is looking good for next year as we are finally beginning to rid ourselves of loads of dead money.

Now that necessary changes are being made and the organization is no longer just burying their head in the sand. I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt this offseason especially due to how the team responded late in the year.

I understand exactly what you're saying but I'm saying that I'd like for us to be projected in a positive manner.

What this tells me about the media though is that because we're on the bottom tier of the NFL, we shouldn't be given any attention. I've heard that Schaub is just another AJ Feely. No matter what we do... we're doomed by the media. Yes, we have to prove ourselves but the media isn't allowing us to do so.

What's going to happen is that we're probably going to end up the cinderella team of the NFL next season and 'shock' everyone when we're in fact not shocking anyone. It's about ignorance. These reporters just aren't doing their jobs. Look at what we've done. I see it as of these reporters NOT doing their jobs to the fullest.

Since there are over 30 teams now...the media just doesn't have the time to feature bad teams...nobody cares outside each bad team's respective market (for the most part). The media tends to spend their time on the better teams. We will get that attention when we are a better team.

It is just too simple and cliched to write that the Texans never had an offensive line and Carr was held back due to that perceived definciency. It's like writing about global warming, it's a slam dunk!

But, if Carr was so good and an untapped talent, then why could he only get a backup position after his release? And, in addition to that, gladly accept the backup position role! Good to great QBs do not gladly take a backup role when they should be hitting their prime.

Granted, Carr did not get the benefit of the best offensive line in the NFL, but that is hard to develop and maintain over an extended period in the NFL due to shorter rookie contracts and free agency. Bottom line, every QB in the NFL is going to run up against that problem, that's why QBs have to make players better around them. With that said, I never really saw play by Carr where I thought he was the best player on the offense working the best out of a tough situation. Carr just doesn't seem to have the ability make players better around him, and he seems perfectly happy with that.

I know this was said above, but because you get posted on a website does not mean
a) you have ANY football knowledge (let alone Texans' knowledge)
or
b) you have any credibility as a journalist

I LOVE

Big bucks to blow?!?!?!? We did great for what we had to offer.

1. Obviously a garbage article full of stuff that is not accurate and is incomplete.

B. The guy is a blogger not a journalist. It's just an opinion, like the ones you hear on your couch or at the bar or whereever. No matter what the source, you just use your brain and ask yourself if it makes sense or not.

III. The only people that truly pay attention to the Texans are its fans and fantasy football sorts, and mostly the latter to see whether they should start guys on the teams facing the Texans that week. The Texans haven't played the most watchable brand of football (understatement), so non-fans haven't had much reason to follow the team. Because of that, it is not likely you are going to read terribly insightful articles about the team because most everyone national couldn't give a crap about them. It is one of the reasons I started blogging about the Texans--that if I wanted for there to be anything written out there about my favorite team that was even semi-accurate or attempted to talk about things other than VY and Bush, I was going to have to write it myself.

:texans chick:

Thank goodness for the MB, HPF, AJ and the like, because I don't mind reading critiques about the team as long as they make some sort of sense and don't say brainless stuff like the Texans were depending on Todd Wade in 2006 etc.

:texflag:

Why subject yourself to this stuff? I mean other than saving it to throw back in their faces later, I can't see the need to expose myself to such negativity. If you think for two seconds they'll apologize after you've proved them wrong, I got some swampland in Arizona to sell ya ;) Just wait and see if I'm right or wrong, all of these mullets will be on that bandwagon, exclaiming only THEY knew the true potential of this football team. And guess what, you'll still have your panties in a wad....you don't have the platform they possess to preach from :)

the blog is asinine, but i must admit that i loved all of the replies. texans fans really tore into him as he deserved, but added legit arguements and insight from people that actually watch the games.

10, right?

we would've had to trade our first this year, our 3rd & 4th this year, and a first day pick next year (which we only have a first & third) to move up to the 5 spot for levi brown. a player who many considered as not even a top 10 prospect. i wish i could turn my brain off during the draft too, but i dont think i'd write about it if i could.

Going into the 2006 draft, Casserly constructed an offensive line of Chester Pitts, Todd Wade, Steve McKinney, Zach Wiegert and Mike Flanagan, thereby allowing him to essentially stand pat on Draft Day. You've gotta ask, why, if Casserly and Co. didn't like Reggie Bush, couldn't they have taken D'Brickashaw Ferguson?

tell me that i'm just not understanding ... first he lists the players and appears to assume that we're OK on the line, and then says we should've taken d'brick. we used 2 first day picks on the offensive line last year (one of which was considered by many a first rounder) and both started last season. does noone outside of houston know this? because of kubiak's forsight he knew that these trench guys would likely be there in the meat of our draft so we could use the first pick on a defensive cornerstone ... a model of what's been done in denver during kubiak's tenure there, and apparently a trend he's continuing here. defense first, offensive line later, and no fear in trading for the player most coveted. the blog is a regurgitation of random espn bashings sprinkled around the internet.

Ever hear of George Tenet?

"Slam Dunks" belong in basketball.. not in WMD's, football, or any other endeavor.

To boil it down, Carr's problem is:

(F) All of the above.

I can think of 5 reasons David Carr failed. Some of it was his fault. Some of it was others. Some of it would have happened no matter what other factors were in play. I'm just glad the bleeding is over.

My belief is ... if they can't give an educated thought out analysis ... then they'll drag you through the mud and call you stupid .

Then if you go 12-4 you become a genuis overnight . These guys don't know as much as this board does about the team ... I really believe that .

Yeah, this guy obviously only looked at stats, and has never actually watched a texans game.

Speaking of watching the games and being an improved 6-10. The Texans did show a lot of improvement in their record, and they closed out the season on a little run against a big team.

However, I still worry about some of those ten losses and even one of the wins. In some of those games they were totally inept on offense; not just QB, not just running, not just blocking - ineptitude everywhere. Those are the games a lot of people remember, and there were more of them than wins over Indy :)

The Texans need to stop having that sort of embarrassing game mixed into their season of close losses and wins.

There is one way for the Texans to stop being the butt of jokes, and it is the same way a team can stop the score being run up against them. To stop the other, guy they have to stop him. Words don't help. Actions do.

I really hope Kubiak is using all of this as fuel for our team. They should post that article in the locker room just to piss the defense off. Hopefully this lights a fire in the asses of our offensive line. I mean they are basically being told they are the sole reason David Carr failed. This season, it's on.

Honestly people around the country probably have watched a total of 8 Texans games in total. For them to act like an expert or atleast to act like they know enough to criticize is silly. They haven't watched and haven't done any research. They just go by stats and go by what they see on highlights on Sportscenter. Not too different than alot of local "fans" who don't watch Texans games and think they are experts or have enough knowledge to ***** about the team.

But if the Texans go 9-7, they all will be jumping on the bandwagon.

100% correct. last was very similar to the 7-9 season. we could have had a winning record that year with a few more plays but by the same token we could have just as easily been 3-13 that year. we have always struggled to make big plays and have always struggled to close games out. hopefully this begins to change beginning this year.

Problem 1 is that this article makes it seem like O Line is the biggest need for any team in the NFL ...

That part isn't a problem. That is true for every level of football, not just in the NFL. Until a team has a sound O-Line they will never be competitive. No matter how good the rest of the team is, if the O-line is unsound, ie constantly breaking down on simple pass rushes and/or unable to get a good push on run blocking assignments, the team is going nowhere. I know that the O-Line isn't the flashy sexy position that QB is, but it is the foundation on which every succesful team is created. With that in mind, here's to hoping that the KubiakSherman Foundation Repair Co. are successful at fixing the Texans's subsiding foundation.
