This week, we explore the background of Michigan's Leon Hall:[/I]

Overview: A 2006 finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award (as the country's top defensive back) and Bronko Nagurski Award (top defensive player). … The consensus All-America selection posted 45 tackles (35 solos) with a sack and a fumble recovery in 2006. He led the squad with 18 pass deflections and intercepted three passes. … He set a school record with an 83-yard return for a touchdown of a fumble recovery, deflected four passes and recorded four interceptions as a junior. … He was a San Diego Union-Tribune Scholar-Athlete Award winner while competing at cornerback, wide receiver and quarterback at Vista High School.
Positives: Has a solid frame with good chest thickness, broad shoulders, defined upper body with muscular arms, tight hips and waist, well-developed thighs and calves with room on his frame to carry at least another 10 pounds. … Hard worker who plays until the whistle. … Smart, instinctive defender with very good field vision and quick reactions, especially attacking the ball in flight. … Has natural hands and very good ball skills, timing his leaps to get to the ball at its high point. … Shows good flexibility coming out of his breaks and has the ability to slip a block and make the tackle in the backfield. … Well-respected team leader who plays with aggression and never takes a play off. … Explosive hitter who keeps his pads low and shows good arm extension to wrap and secure. … Has the speed to stay tight on the receiver throughout the route and is very good at anticipating the route's progression. … Rare to see him caught out of position.
Negatives: Has good timed speed but lacks explosion coming out of his breaks and needs to mirror the receiver closer rather than allow a big cushion. … Hard tackler but must use his hands better in attempts to jam and reroute at the line of scrimmage. … Sometimes relies too much on his recovery skills and lets receivers make underneath catches.
Comparison - Buccaneers' Ronde Barber: Hall is a sound field technician who might not be the biggest or fastest defender on the field, but, like longtime Pro Bowler Barber, he is good at getting into position to make the play. He is a solid zone-coverage defender, but with his field vision and natural hands (along with a lack of blazing speed) he could be a better fit at free safety down the road.

I've made up my mind.

If he's on the board at 10, and no one of significance has fallen this is the player I want.

can't go wrong with hall.

i don't like the comparison, though. hall is one of the better athletes at his position in this draft. chris houston ran a faster 40, but look at all the drills--hall beat houston in all of 'em. 4-year starter in a tough conference. could also return some kicks or putns in a pinch.

NFL network did their little in depth coverage, that they do for the prospects, on him yesterday...

I watched him play a couple times, but the times I watched he didn't really stand out...

But they showed some film and I fell in love with his technique...And you're right...he is a better athlete than what he's given credit for...

Hall just doesn't seem like a shut down corner. I don't think he'd beat out DRob as the #1 CB either. I think Revis and Houston have the most potential to be shut down corners and either could be #1 CBs on the team. If you look at Houston's 2006 game film vs. Hall's, Houston was WAY more impressive. But Hall has been consistent throughout his careeer. I'd also be stoked if I saw Revis and Mathis as our KRs, our special teams would be a force to be reckoned with.

I think most people agree that Hall has excellent technique for a college player.

He is also a lot faster and athletic than he is given credit for.

With his skills and technique there is no reason to believe that he will not be a shut down CB.

I wouldn't expect any rookie we drafted to un-seed Dunta as our #1 corner...

I agree....

And it's not like there are tons of better options at 10...

Actually, I don't think he plays up to his speed.

Even in his 3rd or 4th year, I don't think Hall could take the #1 CB position from DRob.

I don't even understand why that matters ??

We're always going to have atleast two corners on the field...

And didn't we take Dunta at 10? We'd be taking Hall at 10...

Right, well I'd rather have a shutdown CB(Revis or Houston) and a good CB (Dunta) rather than just two good CBs (Dunta & Hall).

Why does it matter where we took Dunta?

I think you're mixed up here.

Dunta is a playmaker CB, a guy who takes risks. Revis is the same way. He is very good, but he is not a shut down CB.

Hall never takes risks. He always plays the WR, never the ball. He only gets INTs on bad throws. I have no problem with that. I would trade INTs if it would guarantee that our CB would have the WR smothered on every play. That is why Hall is a shut down guy.

Because you said he wouldn't beat Dunta out as the number 1 corner...I'm trying to figure out how that's relevant and why that matters....

You say it as if Dunta is terrible....Like "he can't even beat out this scrub"...

With Leon Hall, there aren't too many teams that'd have a good young duo like us...

And you're saying you'd rather have players that aren't going that high, and won't be there in the third round..

IMHO, Leon will be one of the more safer choices for us....Not to mention it's a position of dire need...

Wow...You pretty much sucked the thoughts from my head...

He's pretty much the Anti-Dunta, but in a good way...

i would be happy with hall in the first, i have watched some tape and i like him a lot. i was sold that landry was to be the FS of our future until we moved to 10. but i am also happy if we add hall... i think hall/drob could be good for a long time, and corners are among the most important position on the team IMO... my question is this... if we draft hall... who is our FS? i am one of the many that feel cc brown and glen earl are both fine at SS... but neither can hack it at FS... i DO NOT want brown and earl both starting again... do we get a FS later in the draft?

I thought Trent and Hall alternated covering Jarrett and he beat them both.

Well Trent was covering Jarrett one-on-one most of the game and he was getting toasted.

I dont think Smith did much in that game and I'm sure that can be attributed to Hall (and the fact that every smart QB who played Michigan threw on Trent).

You're reading too much into what I'm saying, that's not even there mind you. I really haven't been critical of Hall as much as I've been high on Revis and Houston.

"And you're saying you'd rather have players that aren't going that high, and won't be there in the third round.."
Really? When and where did I say that?

Mike Johnson from 'Zona or Gattis from Wake.

Don't forget that John Walker will play safety in NFLe this year, I still think he might be the answer.

I actually liked John Walker....and Tramon Williams...

Im interested as to why.

If they wanted to trade down and take Levi i wouldn't like it, but I'd be more o.k with it than taking him at ten...With the state of our franchise, and not having a second round pick I think we need more of an impact player...I don't even think Levi can come in here and start for us at LT...If they are going to take a tackle at ten this year, they better be damn sure he can start for us at LT, and do a good job at it...

Mind you, I think D'Brick is better than him, and he gave up 10 sacks in his first year...I don't see how having Levi as a LT gives people the warm fuzzies...We can do better if we just wait till next year where there are about 4 or 5 tackles that are better than Levi...If Sam Baker comes out Levi is probably a second rounder...

JMO, but I 'd rather have a couple players over Levi...Hopefully Miami takes him at 9 so it's not even an option....

Ok, you guys seem to think Houston, Brevis and Hall make excellent CB opposite DR. On defense, I think we need a corner more so than any other position. Can we trade down a few spots, get one of these guys and get a second round pick? I would like a LT in 2nd if we can get a high enough selection. Staley looks good but others have said he is moving up board not based on skills. A CB will take pressure off our FS and linebackers also. The LB could then concentrate more on run and rushing QB which should strengthen the Dline. there I've solve everything. Guess I will start on the offense next.

We could probably trade down a few spots to get a 2nd round pick.

But I dont think that Hall would still be on the board and he is the consensus #1.

I dont know if Houston would be there either but I am pretty sure that Revis would be.

So if we would be happy to settle with one of those guys to obtain a 2nd rounder then it would work. I'm not sure how far we would have to trade down tho.

I too believe we need Hall. I would not be mad about any of the other corners, but I just believe we could stick in Hall and not have to work with him that much. Plus after PBuc I really don't want another risk-taker opposite Daunte.

IMHO we could get a good safety later in the draft like John Wendling.

I like the trade down idea and getting our pick of Revis/Houston/Hall...maybe even Nelson?

All 3 Cbs bring something extra

Revis can return punts

Hall can return kicks

Houston imo is the best pure CB prospect due to his superior athleticism and the fact that he shut down some very good receivers this year in the toughest conference in NCAA football.

But they're all excellent CB 2 prospects for our team, especially if we can grab one of them and get a 2nd round pick!!!

I wouldn't mind trading down and picking up one of the other first rd. DB's and a second rounder....that' actually be pretty nice...

This is what I'm hoping will happen. We could trade back 5 or 6 spots and still be able to get either, Nelson, Hall, Houston, or Revis. One should still be available. That would get us at least another 3rd.

I'll definitly agree with the few posts above.

I think the SMARTEST thing for us to do is trade down to where we can pick up a 2nd round pick. at least one of the players from Reggie Nelson, Leon Hall, Chris Houston, Darrelle Revis should be there, my bet is probably 2 of them would be.

Then we should take the best one available for our team. Secondary is a HUGE need for us and we also really need a 2nd round pick this year or next.
