I can almost assure you someone from the Texans staff will be there, along with at least a scout or something from every other team. They are football scouts. It's what they do.
I don't know if it is open to the public. Even if it were, football practice is an incredibly tedious and boring event. Imagine flag football, with less contact. Good place to take a nap though.

I don't think it's open to the public. I recall hearing that on 610 or 790 a few days ago. I'm sure the Texans will attend.

The paper said it was open this morning.

...lots of free agent/camp guys in the pile at U of H. Just lost our FB. I saw Battle, unless I've got the wrong guy destroy, Baytown Lee a few seasons ago. He's too heavy right now...but for the price of room and board you get a cheap look see in camp. I disagree, I think the scouts will be there unless they are scattered about to far to get there.

Did anybody go or heard anything about the Pro day at UH?

Just wanted to know how Kolb and the rest of the Cougars did.

Thanks

UH Pro Day

I don't have all the exact details on every player but I spoke with some of the people who attended the event and work for NFL teams and they said that almost everyone had a good workout with just a couple of exceptions.

* Kevin Kolb threw the ball well and showed his NFL arm strength as he was able to cut it loose in his passing drills. Jerry Rhome took him through the paces and Kolb did what he needed to do for the NFL teams in attendance.

* Jackie Battle was the star of the show. The Cougars ran on an artificial turf and the times I received on Battle from an NFL source who timed him was 4.46 and 4.40. The source said that his team averages the time and adds .10 for the surface so he is posting it as a 4.53 which was "very, very surprising". Nobody expected Battle to run that fast and I don't think anyone expected his 41" vertical leap either.

* Vincent Marshall ran in the 4.3s and that was AFTER THE SURFACE ADJUSTMENT! The only problem for Marshall is his size. His lack of size will probably keep him from being drafted.

* WR Biron Ealy ran in the 4.5s which became a 4.6 with time adjustment. Still, that was not at all disappointing to the teams in attendance and two scouts who I know are already trying to position themselves as the front runner to add Ealy as a free agent if he isn't drafted. Teams like Ealy's potential and they are fine with his speed after today.

* Will Gulley didn't run well (4.7) but there are some teams who are considering moving him to OLB in the 3-4 defense.

It is clear that track coach Leroy Burrell and strength coach Larry Jackson have done a terrific job of getting the Cougars ready not only for this pro day, but also for the upcoming season. The hiring of Larry Jackson before last offseason was one of the best moves UH could have made for the football program.

I wouldn't mind getting Vincent Marshall, maybe in the 7th

That is actually an EXCELLENT point. It's a lot like WR Anderson pick late last year. Except as a U of H fan, I've grown to REALLY appreciate how excellent of a route runner Marshall is...and for being smaller...he can still get excellent seperation. OH....and fly-paper for hands never hurts.

:elmo:

Is Marshall like Santan Moss small or smaller?

Marshall is like former Texans return man J.J. Moses...with breakaway speed. He'll find a spot in the NFL.

I wonder what Battle weighed in at. That's a very fast time for a FB prospect.

Battle is 6'2" 235 4.4 40-yard dash....that is no full back that is a stud RB
he showed GREAT hands at the combine today as well...and a 41" vertical

Looks like he dropped some weight, ala Brian Leonard. I really think his value is as a combo RB/FB. Maybe best in a one back set, like he played in at UH.

I dunno, but maybe I should pay more attention to local college ball ?
I never heard of this guy and one of my favortie NFL sites, nfldraftcountdown,
doesn't have him listed among their 25-30 running backs coming out this year.
Doesn't this put him in the same category with Chris Henry, the unknown Arizona back who had the blow-out day at the Indy Combine ?

Yeah todays paper said he skyrocketed up some boards and it was too bad he wasn't at the combine.

"That was one of the greatest workouts I've ever seen," said Tennessee's coordinator of college scouting C.O. Brocato.

Battle is 6-2, 238. Brocato timed him in the 40-yard dash in 4.44 and 4.43.

"Some had him in the 4.3s," Brocato said. "He put on a fantastic show. He made himself a lot of money. He went from a player going to be drafted in the fifth through seventh rounds to a first-day pick. It was just a fabulous workout."

Anybody have any more info on teh 6'8" TE. I heard McClain say he was a former basketball player, but was looking for a little bit more info.

Rodney Hannah, former UH power forward who switched to football after Penders came in. 11 catches for 101 yards and a TD last season.

From NFL.com's pro day page:

Battle (6-2, 235 pounds) ran his 40s in 4.42 and 4.43. He also had a 41-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-11 long jump, 4.11 short shuttle, 6.51 three-cone drill and 19 bench presses.
If these numbers are correct, here is where Battle would have ranked at the combine among RBs:

Combined 40 yard sprints = 4.42 + 4.43 secs = 8.85 secs (1st)
Vertical Jump = 41" (1st)
Long Jump = 10'11" (1st)
Short Shuttle = 4.11 secs (3rd)
3 Cone = 6.51 secs (1st)

Looks like the National Scouting Combine service missed. Again.

The big difference between Battle and Chris Henry is that Jackie actually produced in college, running for 2120 yards and 31 TDs in his career. Would be a good compliment for the Eagles Brian Westbrook (similar to how Battle was used at UH with Alridge). Battle could even play in the same backfield with Westbrook.

the only thing about battle is if he played up to what his worked out was he would be a 1st round pick...i don't remember ever seeing him display this speed on the field...he always looked slow on the field

vincent marshall is a guy that intrigues me...i look at him and see a steve smith type player...a guy who is gonna get overlooked and probably won't be drafted...if we pick him up i would fully expect him to make the roster and push mathis for the KR job...think if he could get his weight up the 180's this kid will be a stud...he's got the natural hands and he's got the speed

kolb is going to be a stud...i'm about 90% sure of that...especially if he goes to a team that runs a shotgun offense...i think he got picked up to learn behind a guy like mcnair up in baltimore he would thrive

or how about Tennsssee behind a guy like VY, how funny would that be :)

man and you know bud adams is the kind of guy who would do that just to kill the houston people...i hate that man with every thing i have...but that is a move he would do just to stick it to houston one more time

I'm curious if JM can write an article without quoting C.O. Brocato.

Branch out a little, John.
