I BLEED TEXANS!
Texans | S. Barber will visit team Thursday
Tue, 13 Mar 2007 22:06:19 -0800

Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans will visit with free-agent LB Shawn Barber (Eagles) Thursday, March 15. Barber would likely be signed to provide depth at the outside linebacker position.

I'd love to see us get a bunch of respectable guys to compete for the SLB spot. I love DeMeco at MLB and I don't have a problem (money aside) with Greenwood at WLB.

I wonder if Anderson and Orr are going to make the final roster, assuming Wong is gone. I can see the benifits of having a true Sams instead of the 3-4 leftover OLBs. I guess late round draft picks will chalenge Polk and Evens for thier spots.

Do you guys think it would be possible to trade david carr and jason Babin for Lance Briggs (since he publictly stated that he will never take another snap with the bears and would rather sit out a season than play for them next year)

Or maybe Barber and Carr, if they sign Barber.

Or maybe Zgonina and Carr and Green since they traded away Thomas Jones already. But then they could just give us CedBen too.

No, I don't think so, BDiddy.

Why would they want Babin? They have a rush DE in Mark Anderson and Chicago is fine franchising Briggs....if he doesnt show up he doesnt get paid. The only thing that may interest the Bears is Carr and that is probably for a 2nd day draft pick...not a pro bowl LB...

Well if im the GM im going to look into getting briggs he already said he wants playmakers plus imagine how nasty our Defense would be if we had Briggs and Ryans @ linebacker

Wow, could you imagine our Defense with Mario, Demeco, Briggs, Dunta, and then if we go D w/ our 1st rd pick? Branch/Okoye/Landry...that would be awesome.

I have a concern about Briggs: he is leaving the Bears b/c he wants to be "the man". And Urlacher is "the man." What does that say about a man's willingness to put the team above self? And what would that say about his heart if he came to the Texans and realized that a sophomore named Ryans was already our leader on d?

Just some things to think about. A divided house cannot stand.

Is that why Briggs is mad??

I thought it had something to do with wanting a long term deal??

I mean 7.2 million is cool & all, but I'd much rather a $12million signing bonus plus a $7.2 million salary to go along with it. The way it stands now, Briggs could play two games next season, and his career.... could be over.

How did Shawn Barber do with the iggles?

Shawn resigned last year with the Eagles from Kansas City. He has missed games due to injury both with K.C. and last year with the Eagles. He is not what he once was as a player, but he is a very good back up and a good special teams guy.

What Shawn will bring you is leadership. He is a locker room leader and knows what it takes to win. Smart, knows what it takes to win, and relates that to younger players.

Not everything a player brings to a team shows up in stats.

This sounds like Wong to me. Good player, wrong side of 30, wrong side of the injury report, but a great guy to have on your team. I say let him sign for min, no guarateed money.

I had to dig, but I found it.

Money might not be the only reason Briggs wants out of Chicago. He said he wants to be the leader of a team and knows he'll never overtake Brian Urlacher in Chicago.

"I've talked to Brian about it," Briggs told FoxSports.com. "I'm a competitor and I want the same thing he has. I've learned a lot from Brian as a player and a leader and I eventually want to be 'the man' somewhere. I want to be like him and have everything put on me too. Obviously I'll never be able to do that there.

Of course, Clayton then goes on to talk about the money.

Ain't gonna happen in Houston unless Demeco is part of that trade..in which case I would never watch the Texans again.

Good find..... Thanks.

Now I can hate him.

Unless he somehow ends up in Steel Blue.

shawn barber is a guy who could come in with danny clark and help tutor some of our younger guys...if shantee orr is brought back he would be the most to benifit from these guys...orr still has a lot of potential to reach...he still has a ton of room to grow as far as his ability to play the 4-3 OLB position

barber is a guy who runs good...who even though he's getting older is probably a quality guy who could come in to relieve greenwood/clark at the outside positions and you wouldn't see that much of a drop in talent...talent-wise barber has been up there...he doesn't deliever the big hits but he's quick to the ball...doesn't have good hands though...INT's and this guy do not happen...sacks happen every once in awhile but i don't see him being our blitzing LB

Do you think we will sign him , and never heard of him , is he a good LB ?
Just watched it on Nfl Network he was visiting us, and wanted to get everyones thoughts on getting another LB ?

he was a good allaround utility LB for KC but had some injury problems. I dont think he would hurt us any, and prolly good in the locker room.

I am smelling a Wali Rainer.

haha...the funny thing is that if wali rainer would not have gotten injuried in training camp he could have been on the roster and probably starting at either the SOLB or the MLB...remember demeco took over the middle when he became injuried...originally ryans was backing him up and pushing greenwood

as far as barber is considered...guys he's a back up LB...he would be brought in to provide depth and lower the need of drafting a guy to fill that role...they are obviously wanting more veteran guys on the defense this year as they look for a more offensive draft would be my guess...maybe because they're expecting a young defensive backfield

I caught a little of an interview with him. He said he would have no problem staying in Chicago. The number one thing he wants is a long term contract. The contract Clayton mentions was pulled off the table after 2 days and the Bears have since been unwilling to discuss a long term deal. He doesn't want to play with 1 year contracts because if he gets hurt it could hurt his future earnings.

I don't get why football players somehow feel they are different than the common man. Guess what, if I slip on my way out the door tonight and break my back and can never work again, what do you think happens to me? I don't even have a one yr guarantee much less a long term deal. This guy needs to man up, and quit acting like some kind of spoiled school girl. His me first attitude stinks, and I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.

Not to mention the 7.2 million is 7 times the amount of money I will make in my life time.

I am trying to remember if Shawn Barber also played for The Bucs and if Barber is a vocal type.

Reason why I want to know if he is a vocal type is because I know he does his job. I just feel Demeco is the same way but kind of quiet. I think he needs a dude with an uplifting spirit out there.

you mean like Philip Buchanon vocal type? that guy led by example.

as a free agent, he'd get at least a $12million bonus, with a $5million salary.

If he takes the wrong kind of injury, that $7.2million could be the last thing he sees.

If he starts to look like an average linebacker, he may not get anything like that in '08. Think Bonzy wells.

Hmmm, seeing that he is a "situational" back, maybe he won't want 1'st pick money.

Pass defense seems to be his forte, hope they massage the numbers the right way.

This is what we need from a SAM that we didn't get laast year. Someone who can make tackles and doesn't get lost covering his guy in space
