Was Charlie Casserly paid off?

Charlie Casserly’s incompetence demonstrated over 6 years could not have been an accident. How can someone go from being “highly recommended and respected by his peers” to a complete flop in one job assignment baffles me.

Because of Charlie, this team is essentially in the same position it was in back in 2002.
 
Something happened, I am not sure what. Any suspicions were verified when he did a goodbye scr*wover of our Texans with the draft pick... Casserly has damaged us for at least the next decade....

If you're talking about taking Mario over VY, you're blaming the wrong person. That was an owner's decision.

Some of you need to get your facts straight about things Casserly was responsible for, and what things he wasn't.

Here's one for you......

They did the Saints a favor to help them out because the league wanted to get them coverage after the hurricane. I've actually heard this talked about.

Casserly was a Reggie Bush guy from the outset, no doubt about it.
 
In all fairness...Charlie has a good football mind. But, also a big heart. And alot of the time, his heart wins and he takes a clean cut guy over a guy with some minor flaws.

If you look at the team, not 1 player when he was here(that I recall) had any problem with the law, or anyone for that matter. I'm not saying draft another Pacman Jones type. But, he didn't even draft of want a guy that stole a stick of gum in 5th grade.

nope travis johnston got in trouble beating his girlfriend at Florida State.

Umm, what positive things has he EVER done in the league? I don't see how anyone would have highly recommended him. He screwed up the Redskins as much as he screwed up the Texans and was fired there also.

Yep, so true.

And if people recall, Kubiak was never high on VY as his QB. He probably would have picked Leinart or Cutler in last year's draft over Young (for a variety of reasons).

The draft came down to Mario or Reggie Bush, and both were offered deals before the draft. Reggie wanted $$$ and planned to hold out (which he did for awhile), and Mario took the money and ran.

Casserly was still here just to help the transition from old staff to new coaching staff.

The rest, as they say, is history.

If Houston gets awarded a Super Bowl in this year's owners' meetings, then maybe the story has legs. Otherwise, what's in it for ol' Bob to make such a decision? idonno:

Oh, OK. Casserly was out of the loop. I guess all that gushing he did over the air and TV was my imagination. Thanks for setting me strait!
 
Im looking forward to seeing Mario play this year. Neither VY or Bush is on the team I care the most about. I wish them well, but....

I put this in another thread but look at 2005. Charlie wasn't paid off, he just thought he was smarter than he was and we paid for it

Casserly is running the 2005 draft. Here are our picks.
1) Rd. 1 player 16 Travis Johnson DT Florida State
2) Rd. 3 player 73 Vernand Morency RB Oklahoma State
3) Rd. 4 player 114 Jerome Mathis WR Hampton
4) Rd. 5 player 151 Drew Hodgdon C Arizona State
5) Rd. 6 player 188 Ceandris Brown DB Louisiana-Lafayette
6) Rd. 7 player 227 Kenneth Pettway LB Grambling State

We also gave up our 47th and 78th pick overall for Phillip Buchanan.

So right now we have gotten pure production out of Jermone Mathis. Many responded before that they thought Morency was a good pick and will pay off for the Pack. Whether he turns out or not, he still ends up being a bad pick because we didn't need another RB at that time in the draft...OL would have been nice and we had already used a supplemental pick in 2003 on Tony Hollings. His big misses were in the 2nd and 3rd rounds..like Joppru and Ragone, when we should have added pieces to the puzzle.

You're welcome! If you actually think it was Casserly's decision with who to take with the first pick . . . it was your imagination, all right. Kubes or McNair had no say in it, huh? Like I said, get your facts "strait".lol:
 
I don't think Charlie did anything wrong or illegal, that's just the way it goes in football. Personally, I think evaluating collegiate talent is one of the hardest things there is to do in all of sports. So many things can go wrong: personality conflicts, injury, money problems, and family problems.

Most of the rookies are anywhere from 19 to 22 years old. League minimum for players with zero experience is $285,000. That’s a lot of money for a young man to have and its easy for them to get in trouble or get unmotivated. IMO, I think thats what happened to Travis Johnson; he got a little money and lost the hunger to play the game (who knows really).

I've always thought the most important part of the combine was the interview time. There's only so much information you can get from a personality test, sometimes its best to just sit down and talk to a candidate.
 
Charlie is a very simple organism.

If it worked, it was because of his brilliance.

If it didn't work, it was because he was doing what the coaches wanted.

And fans basically need to shut their pie holes because they don't know diddly.

Every time I hear Jim Rome replay the piece about Evil Kneivel talking about Bob Truax, I think of that egotistical little bastard.


Someone needs to add the painful footnote above about passing on D.J. Johnson (wouldn't fit in our system) and Jammal Brown (can't play LT - although he made the Pro Bowl at that position in his second year) to take Travis freaking Johnson.
 
Matt Stevens is taboo yet Charley Casserly is still talked about, despite doing 100x more damage than MS could ever dream of.

I say we ordain the day of his firing/resigning as Charley Casserly day and make it some sort of Houston "Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night". Really I think Casserly's face would make a pretty interesting mask. Anyone that wants to elaborate on that, or slam it...both are welcome because I'm bored beyond belief and ready to head to Port Aransas tomorrow for the week.

haha. yeah, there could be re-enactments of all his historically bad picks performed on stage. there would be children dressing up in their favorite horrible pick by Casserley walking the streets scaring the locals. Imagine all the little children dressed up as Babin, Joppru, PBuck, Ragone, and of course Carr. Then you would have people dressed as the Ghosts of Vince Young, Reggie Bush, and Julius Peppers. that would be some spooky stuff indeed.

Of course there were tons of people on here who thought the pick was crap from day one, but what do they know? If they were so smart they would have been the GM instead of Casserly. Never question the experts. They are privy to top secret information and we're not. Experts always do their homework. That's how Casserly knew about Phillip Buchanon's superior tackling skills.

Casserly did not screw our draft last year it was Kubiak's Call the whole time Mcnair wasnt going to let a soon to be fired GM make the pick.:lightbulb:

yeah I heard that assinine rumor, we passed on Bush so Saints could have him, in turn Saints paid half of Mario's salary...BTW Elvis is still alive too:wheel:

For this to have happened about a dozen laws and rules of NFL would have been broken and someone in media would have found this out and ran with it

here's what REALLY happened, Reggie Bush was OVERRATED, Texans knew this. There was fact he LIED about taking money, which makes one wonder about his moral judgements. They all saw him in 4th quarter on sidelines taking off plays when game was on line for National Championship, he did it during playoff game. I saw Sean Payton get all over him about pulling up short when ball wasn't coming to him..shades of Randy Moss Batman
