According to a report aired by radio station KBME-AM in Houston, the Texans have asked Domanick Williams, Seth Payne, and Kailee Wong to restructure their contracts. Any failure to renegotiate terms with the team before March 2nd, the official start to the new league year, will likely result in that player's release.

The station also added that the Texans are very interested in restructuring the contract of Eric Moulds, but it was unclear from the report as to whether the team might release Moulds if he refused to rework his deal.

Hate to see Payne and Wong go. Class acts , decent players who are past there prime. I don't care if Williams stays or goes. It wouldn't be much of a lost.

I think Payne can be a contributor still, he was our best DT clearly before the injuries hit.

The others I'm not too fussed about.

Hope Moulds restructures he is getting paid far more than what he is contributing.

Thanks for the link. I had a feeling something like this would happen to some of the players, especially DD/DW and Payne. I can't really see either one coming back. At least not for the Texans. It's too bad to, they were both pretty good players before their injuries. It'll be interesting to see what they do. JMHO!

The fact that we are willing to cut Payne tells me that DT is VERY high on our priority list this offseason.

We don't need them anyway. But, I do think we could find some half-wit GM out there that will give us a draft pick for DW.

Its kinda funny that they didn't ask Carr to restructure his contract as well.......

Payne and Wong would be very missed players. And like a poster above, DT is a high priority at this specific moment whether people like it or not. Rick Smith's first failure was letting Robaire Smith go. Big whoops.

Williams and Moulds on the other hand, would be huge losses for this franchise. We all saw what happened to the Texans when Domanick gets hurt, and the fantastic year that Andre had. In my opinion, this is our priority...to figure a way out to get Domanick back at a cheaper rate...and somehow to keep Moulds.

Robaire Smith had a pretty big contract. He was cut because we're trying to rebuild, and unfortunately, when you do that, you can't keep everybody you'd like to...strictly because of salary cap reasons.

Payne is old and coming off a pretty serious injury.

yes and despite that he is STILL the best DT we have.. and we are seriously hurting at that position. A willingness to get rid of him says to me that we intend to focus on that position this offseason.

Rick Smith's first failure was letting Robaire Smith go. .

Sometimes I wonder ...

Beemer or no Beemer, Robaire was an overpaid, bad attitude, oft injured, show up for two games a year tub of goo who took advantage of our inept former GM to the tune of a 6 year, $30 million dollar contract. He was a necessary purge and I was glad to see him go.

Robaire's fate may have been sealed on the first day of training camp last summer when Kubiak called him out for fighting..... "I don't care who you are, if that happens again, you're out of here" were Kubiak's exact words to Robaire at the end of the practice. Flanagan was also involved but Kubak's ire was directed at Smith. I have reason to believe that Robaire rubbed off on TJ in a bad way and that he wasn't a good guy to have around younger players. Kubiak, Smith and the coaches saw it and did what they had to do, and they did it quickly.

Robaire is part of the troika of worst contract signings in club history along with Walker's ridiculous extension and Wade's ridiculous 30 million dollar FA deal.

Anthony Maddox is twice the player Robaire Smith was... for 1/20 the money.

If Wong is all the way back from his ACL injury, I'd like to see him restructure and stay. He'd be good depth and a good veteran presence. If he won't restructure, been nice knowin' ya. IMO, Payne is snakebit, good player or not. Williams will NOT be back. As the article stated, there is another "undisclosed setback" with his rehab. It's called a chronic condition. Short of a miracle, his knee will never be the same. I want Moulds to stay. I think he's been a good influence on the team, as whole. This FO seems to know exactly what they want in a player and they aren't afraid to clean house. Maybe we can get out of salary cap hell as quickly as the thumbtacks did. I don't think we'll see ridiculous FA signings of players past their prime like the prvious regime did.

You're right about those 3, they were definitely overpaid except that among them atleast Walker was talented and very productive at times when he wasn't in sick bay.

I stand oppossed to too much dissin of Gary Walker.

"Now they can go back to Dallas and have a hard-knock life," said Texans defensive end Gary Walker, the only former Oiler on the squad. "We ruined their season."

I stand opposed to giving players ridiculous contract extensions when they are obviously on the down side of their careers. The Texans clearly panicked when they re-signed Walker to that deal.

Walker earned his Pro Bowl the year that picture was taken. He was great that year.

But that was about it -- in terms of return on value for what he was earning. Walker hasn't played a down for the Texans in two years but we're still paying for it in dead money on the cap.

It's funny that picture is still making the rounds. I scanned that image in from my paper Chronicle years ago.

Really?

Well damn! Thank you.

That was my wallpaper for pretty much all of 2002 and into 2003.

If DT is an issue and Peterson is gone when we come up,should we take Branch if he is there. That kid is a beast and with Meco and Mario he would def. be a good addition.

IMO, no! I've mentioned this on other threads. Branch is a "space eating" NT suited for the 3-4 defense. I don't think that's what the Texans are looking for. They want more of a "pass rushing" DT, like Okoye, that is suited for the 4-3 defense. If they take Branch at #8, I'll be surprised. JMHO!

Okoye is a 19 yr old beast built alot like Tommie Harris, with plenty of room to grow. Would be interesting watching him and Mario work side by side. Would be a nightmare for any guard/tackle/TE combo.

payne is over 30 and has recently torn his ACL twice...retirement should be what he's thinking

wong is in a position where he is probably better served looking for a new team anyway or again retiring...i see him as a better coach than a player

weigert should be added to this list...he hasn't lasted an entire season yet...and while i'm throwing o-lineman names out who need to restruction or get out how about flanagan and mckinney

moulds i'm not sure about...i think the lack of consistancy with the offense kinda restricted his ability to make plays for us

DD i mean DW i could care less about...the guy has had problem after problem staying healthy and when your position is runningback that's not a good thing

bruener needs to be released

i also think they might want to restructure the deal anthony weaver signed last season to go along with guys not playing up to their pay scale

I dont think Smith was a big loss. He was never much of a pass rusher, and even with free agents off the street and practice squad at DT, we gave up very little on the ground in the second half of the season.

IMO, it looks like we coud be clearing the decks in order to make a purchase or two.

I sincerely hope so.

We have too many players on fat contracts who don't come close to meeting the value they suggest. And there's a few more I'd like to add to that list, if it was me in charge - David Carr being the main one. I like the guy, but he's getting paid a LOT more than he's ever justified and a pay cut would - I think - go a long way towards appeasing all those Texan fans out there calling for his head (and maybe take a little of the pressure off him personally).

Also Wiegert, Flanagan, TJ ... we shed a lot of dead weight last year and I'm hoping we do the same this year. And with someone like Travis or DDW we may well be able to pick up a mid-late draft pick or two along the way. This has the potential to be one heck of and offseason.

I agree that at #8, if Okoye and Branch are both still there, we take Okoye.

If we get Carr to restructure they should have playing escalators in his contract so he can earn some of that money back should he play well.

Because if we do keep him because there is no better option out there it a) saves us cap money and b) shows David that we don't think you have been playing up to your pay level BUT we are willing to pay you that if you produce! Look what it did for Pennington last year...

No.

Too many hard feelings. Too much resentment. Too much damage that can't be undone. Cut the ties, turn the page, and move on . . . salary cap be damned. It's not as if it will be the first time there will be a dead money issue.

Just don't bring in Plummer. That would suck.

I agreed with just about everything you said except for the bit about Bruener. He is STILL one of the best blocking TE's in the league, and he also has very good hands, although he isn't used in the passing game all that much. He is getting up there in age, but until his game drops off, or we find someone better to replace him, I still want him on the team. Right now, we don't have anyone close to his level. Owen D. is the closest, but he is still young, and more of a receiving threat. Together, they are a pretty good tandem at TE.

DD is a good player, but did we all forget that his injury is a bone on bone injury that last year all the talk was it would never get that much better. So, he can run on it know. What happens when he gets hit on it by some of these 300 pound lineman. I am just not as optomistic as you. Yes, he needs to restructure with the same payout, but performance scale oriented.

Great post aj. It was a good reminder of how the new regime won't tolerate nonsense among teammates. Smith always had the attitude of being "too good to be playing for the Texans".

I'm glad that they are moving on D. Williams. He was slated to get paid way too much for an injured player who last saw the field a season and a half ago. I don't think he'll even play again, to be honest. At least letting him go will settle down all the talk of him coming back. It's time to move on an find us a real everydown RB now.

SB07, thanks for the link. I'm sorry to see some of these guys go, but it's time to move on. I just hope the they can clear enough cap room to get some good solid FA players. Clements and Hamlin wouldn't be a bad start. :shades: JMHO!

^^We would have a reasonable chance at DE Jared Allen of Kansas City. He's a young, solid DE with 27.5 sacks in 3 years. I would be happy to see Mario put up similar figures. This way, we could go after OL and secondary during the draft.

I like him but I know some will shy away with his second DUI arrest and jailtime...so we might now know if a suspension is heading his way.

Other teams are releasing players, articles popping up about teams eyeing free agents. Any news from the Texans?

They should ask DC to do the same thing.

Question,

Since FA begins in 2 days, when will we know if these players have restructured?

Will they have all of this taken care of before FA starts?

Do you know this for a fact? Do you know if they would be willing to trade him?

They are willing to trade him for a reasonable alternative, although one doesn't appear evident in the FA market right now.

They are quite willing to keep him as well.

They will not cut him. He has too much value and there is too much interest around the league.

He has so much value that they can't get a viable trade offer ... huh .
