The Crossroads

I kind of wish I was drunk for this post. It wouldn't make it more intelligent, but the words sure would come a lot easier.

Texans fans, we've been at a crossroads since the draft last year. I'm really tired of all the bitterness that goes on about a pick that can't be changed. Honestly at this point a decision needs to be made if you are really a Texans fan or a Vince Young fan. I'm not suggesting a Texans fan needs to dislike Vince -- not at all. But the past is what it is...we have a team, and we have players on this team. And right now they are Houston Texans - aka "our team". Vince has done some good things for Houston and Texas but right now he plays for someone that isn't "our team".

So where is the loyalty going to be? When it comes time for Houston and Tennessee to play again, are you going to revel in every positive Vince Young play and take pleasure when you rub Houston's face in it? Are you going to let this keep you up at night and beat yourself up every time Mario Williams makes a rookie mistake, pretending Vince has been flawless? Or maybe complain some more about David Carr?

I don't know. I am just sick and tired of Richard Justice and his clones rattling on about the same stuff. There's a reason Houston fans get such a bad rap and it gets more defined every single day.

That's a good question. I, personally, cheered every single time Vince made a play in either of those 2 games. The thing is, Casserly made that decision to pass on Vince, not Rick Smith. It's simply unfair to Rick and Gary to be bashing that decision, because it just wasn't theirs to make. On the other hand, Bob McNair did have something to do with that. Some notable business sponsors for the Texans even threatened to pull their sponsorship if McNair went with someone else. That hasn't happened, or...didn't happen....so, I believe the cheering for Vince must stop...but this will ALWAYS be an ongoing issue with Houston...for as long as Vince Young plays football. Kind of like that Michael Jordan-Sam Bowie debate people still have.

I totally agree. I have nothing against Vince Young, and this is coming from an Aggie. He is a good player but an even better winner. He has won games everywhere he has been and no doubt, has played a big part in those wins. But nothing you and I say is going to make the Vince Young man-love end. High school, college, and professional football are all separate. A player can play for your hometown, go to a college you dislike, and you root for that player everytime he plays except on that one occasion he plays your favorite college team. The same can be said for professional football and high school/college football. Root for the guy all you want. But everytime he suits up AGAINST the Texans, you decide who you love more: the Texans or Vince Young. If you choose Vince Young, so be it, but I'm sorry you are not a true Texans fan. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't fan taken from the word fanatical, which means to be motivated or characterized by an extreme, uncritical enthusiasm or zeal? I'm not telling you to not be critical of the Texans but whether you like their decisions or not, you support them through it all. That's a fanatic.

I wish we could put it past us too. I think for the most part you're either a texan fan or a vince fan. but you can also look at it like...there is a lot of people that have more invested (not necessarily monetay) in vince (as far as high school and college games). also some people may not be fans of the nfl in general.

A lot of people don't remember that we passed on michael jordan too! instead with the #1 pick we went with hakeem. I hope mario becomes a lot like hakeem....a dominant defender...and that is what most of us expect.

a few years down the road I don't think its going to be quite the deal everyone is making out to be .

I think for the most part you're either a texan fan or a vince fan.

You're right Ole Miss, Deep down we are one or the other.

Me, I'm a Texan fan. I LIKE the rivalry we have with Tennessee, it is going to make Texan's football exciting and fun to watch.

Houston Texans.....HooRah.

Once DC is gone, you'll see the team and the fans on the upswing. Hope springs eternal.

Once DC is gone, you'll see the team and the fans on the upswing. Hope springs eternal.

The only way we get rid of DC is by doing :beerfunnel: to Mcnair's drink and hopefully he will get :drunk:. Then slip him david's release form and we got ourselves a new QB to come in. :D

I am just playing with you Mcnair if you are reading this. :tease:

Be glad you're not a Bengals, Cardinals, Browns, Bears, Saints, etc... fan. A LOT of fans have had it a LOT worse than us. Losing sucks, but we haven't been at it for nearly as long as 4 or 5 teams in this league. IMO, the Texans are headed in the right direction.

I just keep it real...I don't do homer stuff myself....but I love to talk football with people who are honest about what they see. I don't think most "homers" do anything but spin a take.....I don't find the honesty in that if they just stick with positions that they would change if they were living in other cities supporting other teams. I do get tired of redundant spewage though...I think that is what most are tired of.

I could not have said it better. I'd much rather talk football in general than see the same type fights. Many of the arguments thrown out aren't even based in reality. They are more about being a homer or their favorite player and not what is best for the team or how the team has failed or succeeded. Part of being realistic and improving is taking your lumps and learning from the mistakes. You can't gloss over mistakes or perceived mistakes and right now, until things change, people will have to live with the things the Texans have done...VY, Casserly, etc.

I'm pretty sure Casserly had nothing to do with that pick. It was all McNair and Kubiak.

Winning cures all. Until we put a consistent playoff caliber winner on the field there will be doubters and second guessers. For me personally it cant come soon enough.

As someone who thinks we had a great draft last year... I... uh... really don't have much to say on who was actually picked.

I wish VY all the best. I wish people would STOP talking about Bush.

My big problem with the "experts" on the various sports shows is that most of them were bagging us for taking Mario with the first pick instead of Bush. Most of them didn't think we should have taken VY and were surprised that he wasn't the 3rd QB taken. Then Bush doesn't do very much for most of the year but VY starts looking great, and suddenly they're bagging us for not taking VY.

I wish they would just shut it or at least own up that they don't know what they're talking about.

ahh an Aggie.

Sooooo, Aggie, does a fan support his team whether they are losing or winning?

If Aggie says, "Yes."

Then should the said fan be true when rooting for lose or win.

If Aggie says, "No."

Then should the said fan be false and not true for rooting only when winning.

De facto true fan of winning, not the Texans.

As long as Vince is from Texas, he'll have fans from Texas that aren't necessarily Titans fans.

Count me among all the Bud Adams haters from Houston. I LMAO'ed when they came up a yard short in the Super Bowl. I thought that was the ultimate Oilers choke.

How can you choke any more than coming up a yard short in the last seconds of the Super Bowl?

When the Texans got pulled in favor of the Titans in Austin this year, I found myself watching some of the Titans games and even found myself rooting for the guy like I did while he was at Madison and at Texas. Turns out they were fun to watch.

The Texans have done absolutely nothing to market themselves to Austin or any other Texas cities for that matter. From what I've heard around here, they don't even really care to market to these other cities outside Houston.

Having said all that, I'm still a Texan fan and have no plans of jumping ship. I'm still trying to find a way to be a fan of my hometown team while rooting for a player on a division rival while he isn't playing my team. The NFL's interesting nowadays to say the least.

Outside of the Houston metropolitan area, there wasn't much talk at all about VY being the best choice for any of the top 5 teams, much less the Texans. People in general, and the media specifically want to pretend that they knew all along that we should have taken him, but they are just pandering to the new common denominator... the "I told you so" crowd... now, all of a sudden, anyone who thinks they're anyone, boldly states how they knew all along that we should have taken VY... the real truth is that the controversy was between Mario and Reggie, but VY defied conventional wisdom, and had a decent year for a rookie QB and now everyone, and his uncle Tom, "freakin told ya so..."

If Roy Williams and the Lions play the Texans, who do you root for? Quentin Jammer and the Chargers? Michael Huff and the Raiders? Cedric Griffin and the Vikings? David Thomas and the Patriots? Granted, they don't play for a division rival, but I'm sure your sense of loyalty didn't cause you to lose sleep over Bo Scaife or Ahmard Hall (who?), who do play for that same division rival...
The point is, it happens all the time in the sports where our college favorites end up playing for a rival on the next level... this is absolutely no different. Either your with us, or your against us... get good with it.

Your last two posts were excellent. Well said. Man and did you see those Aggies tonight?

Message boards are just message boards......People have zero credibility here and that some people just don't take them seriously. I try to bring humor from time to time because if you be serious too much it just gets boring in my opinion. I like message boards because you listen to everyone elses opinion and see what they think.

Honestly I don't really care if people want to hold it against Casserly, McNair and Kubiak for the rest of their lives if that will bring them some closure. The person that is really being disrespected is the guy we actually drafted. I see so many accusations of "You want to see Vince fail to justify the pick" but I also see people just as bitter, wanting to see Mario fail so they can pull out an "I told you so" about their favorite player.

Bottom line, we've got a #1 overall guy not named Vince Young, and if Houston fans want any credibility as far as supporting their team to the end, its time for each and every person to step up and do their part.

I generally understand you and where you are coming from but what exactly do you want from the fans? I love the NFL because of the talent on the field and the bigger picture of the league in general. Sure, I root for the Texans but I don't know what "doing my part" is other than being as honest as I can with my views. This whole 'Emperor's New Clothing' era of the Carr led Texas has got to end one of these days...I'm rooting for that myself....because I want to support a winner...not because I just fall in line with the company line. Fans are supposed to be opinionated...company lines are for people working for companies.

You see, the problem is....The State of Texas produces so many gifted athletes at the high school and college level, that we should be proud that they are from Texas. Wish them the best, and, always root for the home team. Afterall, (I've said this before) deep down inside, everyone wants to be a Texan!
