Our Draft 2007

First and foremost, let me state that the strength of this draft is by far on the defensive side. We should take advantage of that and stock up on defense. We have many needs on both offense and defense, but if we take a QB, we'd be starting all over again. Our record would be worse than this year if we stick a 1st year QB in there, and some are calling for Sage to start anyway. With Plummer out of Denver, we don't need to take a QB this year. The OL class is very weak, and our staff will shy away from taking a RB early.

1st round- Darrelle Revis CB
The top CB in the draft IMO. Good size and measurables that are backed up with his on field performance. Fills a very big need.

2nd round- Brandon Meriweather FS
Again, another big need is filled. Aggressive and can attack the line and cover. You've seen our weakness when Lee Evans burned Faggins and Brown. That won't happen to Revis and Meriweather.

3rd round- Kareem Brown DT
Our staff has been saying we need to improve our pass rush. The only way to do that is to let Mario do his thing. He can't do that when he's the main focus on our line. Kareem Brown racked up alot of sacks for Miami, and he's a big boy as well. 6'5 315lbs who can help against the run and the pass. You may wonder why such a speciman would drop to the 3rd round. This was his 1st year as a fulltime starter and he lacks experience due to lack of playing time. He could work on his technique, but boy has he been productive when given the chance. Stick him next to Mario and you have the potential for a very good tandem. His work ethic has been questioned at times, but his issues can easily be corrected. Big upside who I'm willing to gamble on for a 3rd rounder.

Those are my picks for the first 3 rounds. By solidifying our defense through the draft, it lets us focus on the offense through free agency. Our big need is OL. RB and QB should be secondary to our OL needs. Neither QB or RB can be productive without the OL, so it makes no sense to address those spots without focusing on the OL first. Let's see what Carr and our RB's can do WITH an OL for next season and we'll go from there.

if you did that, why dont you go with landry in the first...better all around saftey...and aaron ross in the second round, hes a good young faster corner and he can also return punts

Revis also returns. The difference in talent between Landry and Meriweather is negligible. However, the difference in talent between Revis and Ross is much greater. That's why.

I'm starting to like Alan Branch with the first, the guy is dominant and will make the entire defense better. Big, powerful, fast, and athletic he will take on two up the middle and free Williams from some of those doubles, open up holes for Ryans and the linebackers, and put pressure on the QB

I like Branch too, but I like Kareem Brown in the 3rd better...if he turns out to be what he should be. I think our secondary needs more work/talent than our DLine does. DLine is for blue collar players, the secondary is almost all about speed, instincts, awareness, and well...talent.

Just wondering, how come Michael Griffin gets no consideration when talking about safeties, its always only landry, nelson, or meriweather.

he does. but he's clearly the 4th best safety. nelson and landry are the only ones going top 15. meriweather is getting talked about cuz he's better than griffin and we have a chance at him in the 2nd.

It sounds to me that Griffen is more of a SS than Landry, Nelson, or Merriwether. I'm no expert, but have read that he doesnt' have quite the 'ball hawking' skills that the others posess at the FS position. I love his special teams plays though.

If we go CB in round 1, I want Michael Johnson in R3 and a DT, LB, or OT in R2. Johnson is a beast and is a gamer. It speaks volume when you come in as a JUCO and start over someone who's been there awhile.

Griffin is a SS/FS hybrid pretty much. He plays more like a SS with his ability against the run, but has the size of a FS. He doesn't play like a FS though. He bites on EVERYTHING and doesn't have the recovery speed or ball skills to make up for his oft mistakes. That is why he is the 4th best S prospect.
