Any News on Charles Spencer?

Did a search of the board and couldn't find anything, so I'll just ask the question. Has the team provided an update on Charles Spencer's recovery? I remember reading his injuries were potentially career threatening and that the team wouldn't have a sense as to whether he'd be able to recuperate fully for about a month after his surgery.

Since it's been about a month ... has anyone heard any news? If possible, I may even try to call Coach Kubiak on his show on 610 to ask.

The only "reports" of the injury being career threatening have been fan speculation. He broke his leg. Other than he is out for the season there has been zero info from the team.

This is dated 09-18-2006 but all I could find.

Left tackle Charles Spencer had surgery Monday to repair the tibia he fractured in Sunday's loss to the Colts. "It was a very, very severe fracture, and the surgery went well," Texans coach Gary Kubiak told the Houston Chronicle. "I don't think we'll know a whole lot about his recovery for a couple months."

nowa days there arent to many career endin injuries, if you tear somethin they take a cadaver and use there body parts, i know he fractured his tibula and im not sure how that works

badum-bum

I don't know about career threatening. But I've been banging the be prepaired drum in case he's no longer a OLT canidate. I'm waiting for the "couple of Months" and holding my breath. I hope there's a little more info than we had on the Wand/Faggins deal. I doubt we get it though. If the news that the leg is bad, we'd tip our hand for April. They may not know for sure untill next mini camp. With all the All Day talk in the draft room, I'm gripping about it for sure.

There is no bone called a tibula, but there is one called a tibia as well as one called a fibula. Are you suggesting that he should have the two fused so that he will be the only human with a tibula? As for how it works, from my experience it works better when it isn't broken. :crutch:

man...thanks....thas the funniest s**t ive read in a long time!:yahoo:

CloaknnnDager has a post on the Micheal Bush thread in the college/draft forum. It gave me ......hope. It's not what he broke Duanta. It's where he broke it. You're talking about a 325 pound freak with exceptionally quick feet. That's what made him such a plumb in the third round. A lot of clubs had egg on their face by passing him by. Now whether or not he'll be the same player he was befor the injury, that's the rub for me. There's no doubt he can handle the right side. We won't know untill spring about the left side. If the leg dosen't re-fracture next year, he'll be more than ok on the right side.

Don't worry about it. You are fun to read and "most" of us understood what you were saying. I think it is great that we have English and Science teachers on this board to help us numbskulls get through the day. I realize with great gravity that when I spell a word incorrectly that the sun fades, the tides stop and the earth's revolution slows. I am so POWERFUL! TA DA.

Spencer was really coming along, although his lateral movement was already a little slow to handle the speed rushers, at the time of injury he was locked up on Freeney who was coming off the edge & about to get around Charles to Carr when David handed off to Ron Dayne who barrled over Spencers planted foot still engaged with Freeney and snapped it clean.

Once cleared to play (next season) its going to still take Charles Spencer time to re-gain his strength & mobility, 50/50 if he is ever 100% again. Thats why the Texans need to go after an elite LT in the draft, it addresses a critical need, adds some quality depth and gives Spencer time to rehab without rushing him back into action too early.

I don't understand stuff like this...???????????????? huh?, wtf and all that!

where do you people get your odds on stuff like a broken leg? You guys act like he blew out both knees....

I think Spencer's biggest problem will be creeping to 400 lbs ... if he's not carefull . On the the other hand he gets to 320 lb he'll be better than ever .

It's becoming a bit of a cursed position with th Texans. He was my favorite new player. He was going to be a force. Thanks Dayne. Actually thanks Kubiak for bringing in Mr. Personality. I doubt he yet knows what he did to Spencer. Dayne seems like he's not all there.

I don't understand the over reaction to a simple common sense assertion, wtf is up with that. While not a doctor those who have followed football know what happens in most cases to athletes with this severe injury, case in point look at Eric Winston once considered the premier LT in all of College Football two years later he is still working his way back & not a LT position anymore.

Its a general rule of thumb returning to sports activities is that the injured leg should have 85 to 90 percent of the quadriceps and hamstring strength compared to the pre-surgical level. This is determined by the physical therapist or physician using simple strength tests called isokinetic tests. The time table is set with a broad band depending upon each individual situation of 4 months to 24 months. With a high break to the tibia the patellar tendon (the 'ligament' of the knee cap) connects the lower part of the kneecap (patella) to the upper part of the tibia, specifically to the lump one can feel just below the knee on the lower leg bone (the tibia). Part of this tendon is commonly used in reconstructing a torn ACL.

Now while it would be nice to get a more detailed assesment of the surgery and its time table it does not sound like they know anything for sure at this point so the question was posed & some of us myself included took a shot for specultion sake there is no need to berate posters & tear your own acl in the process :ouch:

Yea, but that was over a month ago. Where is that poster ? Haven't seen
anything new by him lately ? His remarks were always thoughtful and when
it comes to subjects like this, very informative. Sounds like he's an orthopedic doctor. We need his input on subjects like this, especially when
we finally start to get an update(s) on Spencers condition and need to get an educated prognosis.

Listening to Kubiak on SR 610 right now, and he reported in response to
a fan phone call about Spencer that they just got some news on his rehab.
Good news ! They don't expect any additional surgery for the future, so that
sounds good. Lets hope it stays that way. He seemed genuinely optomistic
about the rehab.

I just heard Coach Kubiak's comments. He said Charles was going to be fine and that he is going to be a great player, though he has a lot of hard work ahead of him.

Coach said his biggest regret this year, aside from not having more wins, is that Spencer didn't have 500 snaps under his belt so far. He went on to say that if he did, he'd be right whether Williams, Ryans and Daniels are.

The biggest thing for me is that Kubiak is still saying that Charles "will" be a great player, so it appears the injury will not be career threatening or limiting.

:redtowel:

It's a relief to hear Kubiak express confidance about Spencers recovery, but I still hope they have another OT among their highest priorities for next years
Draft to go along with Charles. It's obvious they have a lot of reservations about Winston playing tackle, though he may be able to help us at guard.

Not true. On 610 today, Kubiak said Winston would play more in games and had been getting better. The reason he didn't play yesterday was that Salaam was playing very well and the coaching staff did not want to take him out of the game.

Kubiak said Winston has been getting a lot of reps with the first team due to Salaam being so banged up, and is improving. Coach also said Winston can play both left and right tackle, and is a very important part of the team's future.

Before I heard Kubiak say all that, I was worried about Winston's lack of playing time and whether he would work out as a tackle. Given the strong vote of confidence he got from the head coach, however, I don't feel that way anymore.

You Know, I did notice Salaam moving really good yesterday.....for someone that was supposed to be banged up he was getting around really well.

Good news on Spencer. I hope he gets a full recovery, because I think he can be a very dominating Tackle. My guess is that Winston will wind up as a gaurd when the smoke settles. It's my impression that Kubes is just sort of luke warm on him as a tackle. He always seemed excited about Spence when he talked about him, but seems much more reserved when he speaks about Winston. Just the impresion I get, could be totally wrong.

From everything I read the break was very high on the lower leg within 6 inches of the knee joint. This is what made it so serious. I hope he comes back next season but it could 2 years for it to heal enough to compete on it at all.
For now the coaches need to stop worrying about a left tackle controversy and get Winston in there as fast as they can. They seem to being doing everything they can to keep him from playing left tackle . He can always move to the right side next season when Spencer comes back. For now we need to build youth at the tackle position and Saalam and Weigert are not the answer for the long term solution.
I know someone out there is going to say Winston is not ready but having seen him all of the preseason and in the limited playing time he has had, this kid has as much up side as Spencer maybe more and this team does not need to squander it's youth.

Spencer was at my home last night, he's very upbeat, not putting on extra weight, sticking to his therapy to a "T" and can't wait to get back on the field. He's a bright guy with his mind in the right place. He's gonna be a terror next year!

I know Winston is a phenomenal athlete, but understand my reservations have nothing to do with him and everything to do with a team that has a habit of throwing rookies to the wolves, usually to disastrous consequences. I don't want something like that to happen to a kid as gifted as Winston. He has a lot of NFL in him. Although I like the idea of him rotating in, the idea of him starting every snap just rubs me the wrong way.

That is good news. Especially with Kubiak being confident also.

Good news and when you see him again, give him all our best and let him know we are all pulling for him and are looking forward to seeing him play next year.

I saw some really good things out of spencer before his injury...really good....

I hate that he got injured because I thought him and Pitts would be special together...

That's great news !
Don't mean to be nosy, but are you in the Houston area or else where ? I know Charles played his college ball at Pitt, but I'm thinking he's from upstate
NY ? I was just curious if perhaps he had returned to his hometown area to be near his family after his surgery, or continued residing here in Houston ?
Once again thanks for the Update. And please do let him know he's in our thoughts.

His rehab is at Reliant,,,he did get the well wishes that I think you guys sent to him, he did appreciate it,,,

I read this is morning (and don't agree with what is said about Spencer, I think he is a future pro bowler).
But by the same token, Joe Thomas would be a monster addition to the Texans, provided his knee won't give him problems in the future.

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/sub/mockdraft.html

" It is not an exaggeration to say that the Texans have been looking for a top left tackle since their inception (remember Tony Boselli?) and this is their chance to finally land one because Charles Spencer is just not the long-term solution there. Joe Thomas was given a Top 10-15 overall draft grade by the NFL's Underclassmen Advisory Panel a year ago but opted to return to school for his senior season after tearing knee ligaments in the Badgers bowl game. A great athlete for the position, Thomas isn't quite in D'Brickashaw Ferguson's league as a pass blocker but he might end up being a better all-around prospect by the time all is said and done."

Not that I don't think Spencer can play LT but I think he would be even a better RT, and Winston is supposed to be very Athletic (former TE); try him at RG. So it could be

LT- Thomas
LG- Pitts
C- Flanagan (looking to replace in draft next year)
RG- Winston
RT- Spencer

(note: Wouldn't hate it, but I still would rather draft defense first)

In that Scenario I would rather let Weary get the start and use Winston as the swing tackle...And let McKinney man the back up gaurd spot...

I find it difficult to assess Spencer's long term role based on 1.5 games of play and Winston's role based on his severely limited playing time. Many think these players are guaranteed pro-bowlers and/or long term franchise players. They may well be, but at this point it is based more on hope than extrapolation of on-field performance.

We won't be seeing anything more from Spencer this year, but I think Winston will get his shot when Wiegert or Salaam finally succumb to the inevitable injury.

I had heard somewhere that they were thinking about looking at Winston at Guard. To tell the truth, people are always talking about our Tackles or Center positions as needing upgrades, but very few mention improving the guards. I think our guard play is nothing special and is a reason we have trouble running the ball. I think guards are important to the running game, as tackles are to the passing. Look at Alexander before his injury, he didn't put up great numbers like he was the year before. Difference no Steve Hutchinson. :twocents:

I like this assessment. With our issue with LOT for five years and with Gaither or Thomas projected where we might select in first, I say go for it! Let the rookie and Spencer compete. I like CS but only had few plays. Our O line could really be set with a selection next year that would allow team to overcome injuries better than historically. I would select best corner @ 2nd & Kolb in 3rd. At 4 go with a RB to match with what we have now. 5th & 6th best dt/lb avail

no no no, lets not fool around with a project left tackle who has a history of knee problems. This whole offense is built around the running game, lets get either marshawn lynch from Cal, or Adrian Peterson from oklahoma. If we cant get either one, we'll have to take another defensive lineman who can dominate, im thinking wither gaines adams of clemson or glen dorsey of lsu, i wouldnt mind laron landry either at safety. but first and foremost, we need a true rb that can carry the load offensively because besides andre, we have ZERO playmakers on offense. We can always get a guard or center in the 2nd - 4th rounds like other teams. If there is no franchise left tackle, we dont need to fool around and take 1 so early.
