You complainers need to get a grip

Mr. Big
Hats off to the team and coaching staff for a great effort on the road. With what Kubiak had to start with, he's done a great job. All the complainers need to just relax and let him do his job. Just think, we could have had Bush (11 carries for -5 yards) hehehe I watched the same game everyone else did and I saw so much more positive than negative this game after the game last week. I'll take it and move on to the next game with the Jags. Think they won't be out for revenge? Should be a great one so everyone buckle up and support the home team.

Good post.

People need to remember that we were 2-14 last year & our team is adjusting to a new coach, new players, and a new scheme on offense & defense.

You guys both get rep from me. In a year like this you have to look beyond the W-L column. I once predicted 8+ wins, but someone should have slapped me back to reality. This year is about Kubes finding who is here next year, and what he needs to get it done in '07.

Damn me......I guess I should have waited until after the first 4 years to start being a fan and following this team. We were 2-14 last year...........what a statement.

And maybe we'll be a 2-14 team this season. But we're a better team this year than last year and if you can't see that then you need to get some new eyes. We should have won last week and we COULD have won this week in a game that most of us expected to be a blow out for the Giants. This team showed a lot of heart today.

If you choose to look at the negative, then go ahead. Rock on with your bad self. But remember that you're choosing to make yourself unhappy.

Personally, I think the team's on the right track. I couldn't say that last year at this time.

Some people CHOOSE not to see the improvement. It doesn't fit what they want to complain about.

I sit on the front row of what is this year the offensive bench so I see things up close and much more personal than most actually.

Hardly, I enjoy all the games and drive in from Austin for each and every one. I'm just realistic about what you call me being negative about and what I call habit of this team.

Not the first time I've heard this after a "competitive" loss, which by the way is as much of a loss as last week's.

I have a question for you? What are you trying to say?

Is this pointed at bah007?

OK. So what is your point?

Are you saying that if Kubiak was fired and Carr was released that we'd have a better chance of winning games? Are you saying that this team hasn't made any progress and isn't getting better? Are you saying that we should build a time machine and go back and tell McNair not to bother bringing a team to Texas? I really don't understand what you're trying to say.

You've heard people try to take some solace in losing close games before, well, stick around long enough and you'll hear it again. You watch pro football long enough and everyone goes through down periods. The reality is that this team has never really had an up period yet. We're building towards it. If you don't think we're moving in that direction, that's fine. You could be right. But I prefer to see the improvement and hope that we're going to start getting some wins soon.

MPO, I have no problem losing a game such as this. Last week I was PO, there was no reason to lose to a team such as Tenn. We played tough and and lost a close game that we could have won. I realize my team is not the best team in the NFL, but there is no reason we can't be competitive.:ok:

Exactly! Last year at this time we were spiraling downward at warp speed. Today we are on the way back up, starting to play as a team and you can see it in our players attitudes together.

I think Kubes is doing a great job. HE KNOWS what he has to work with, he is with them everyday, and I'm sure he knows much better than any of us, who he feels is capable to do certain things. Some things, like a whole new team, with a whole new system and almost all new coaches, TAKE SOME TIME!! It will happen, it is already starting too.

It's hard to be positive when you've been losing all the time. C'mon, another close but well-fought game? This is the best thing the Texans have had to hang their hat on since our 1st game against the Cowboys. At some point, you've got to expect win those close ones. I'm sick of losing! :crying:

Kubiak has this team on the right track...unfortunately, we just don't have enough engines to pull the train.

Give this staff another off-season/draft, and I think we'll see a whole new team next year. You can see glimmers here and there, but inconsistency and lack of talent is preventing us from seeing the big picture that Kubiak is painting. Patience is the key, because they are truly building from the ground up, testing each piece to make sure it's the right fit and discarding those that are not part of our future.

Exactly my point and well said......

I think we are better off than this time last year.
I expect good things in the 2nd half with a softer schedule and the team coming together more. I think we have a chance to go 4-4 and build real momentum for 07

Actually, if you take the time to look at it, it's not.

Complainers?

I don't think so. The Texans lose a lot of games for various reasons.

Two problems seem to be prevelant even going back to the glory days of Doom Capers. Those prolems are scoring significant offensive points and making significant drives for clutch points while coming from behind.

This offense still has several of the same problems now that Doom Capers had in 2003 and 2004, and they are:

1. Cannot execute the 2-minute drill.

2. Texans only average 16 points a game, as well as can't get a TD in the first half on the road, or even score real TDs late in the game late to come from behind.

3. Only averages about 200 yards passing and 90 yards rushing.

If those three items are not taken care off or improved greatly, it's going to be tough for the Texans to get to .500 unless they have a Ravens type defense.

It is really amazing that Kubiak has the same old problems Capers had with the offense. This offense should at least light up of few teams by the end of this season. If not, I am going to get a little concerned about the future. There is too much reliance on the defense!

The biggest reason why the Texans are more competitive the last few games is the same reason why the Texans were so competitive in 2003 and 2004, which is the play of the defense by keeping games close. Granted, the defense doesn't get many turnovers, but they keep the game in play enough that if the offense would score 14 to 17 points in the first half, the game would be more than winnable.

The Texans offense is enemic and can't be relied to win ball games, that is just the way it is. The defense keeps it close, the offense can't close out, and the fans are satisfied with improvement. That just amazes me.

After the first three games, many people on this board were blaming the defense because they didn't stop anyone. Well, now the defense is making the stops, the offense isn't really playing that much better, and the Texans are still lossing.

Losing is losing, no matter how you slice it.

The defense has improved greatly since the Washington game, whereas the offense is still where it has been since the last few years because they can't put up the points to take advantage of good defensive play.

I think we're making strides on both sides of the ball. The defense is obviously improving. The problem with the offense is that we're making strides on the offensive side in terms of yardage from the passing game but our running game is inconsistent and we're not scoring points. We don't have as many 3 and outs as we used to have and we're getting better and better at putting long drives together (as in the 18 play drive yesterday) but we're screwing up right before we get to the end zone.

The offense really isn't that much better. Average passing yards is about 200 yards per game and rushing is about 90 yards. This is all a false hope in my opinion, similar to the 2004 year.

The offense is methodical but very, very slow. The pass plays are usually short, so when the field shortens up, the opposing defenses play those shorter passes tougher which is where the offense has problems executing.

I think the game plan against the Texans offense is really simple, give the short stuff underneath on the outside past the numbers and then tackle. The Texans do not go deep much, and rarely good deep down the middle of the field.

Basically, I am saying a decent defense in the NFL can have an easy game plan to give up 200 yards passing, 90 yards rushing, and give up 17 points against the Texans with no problem and then let their offense win the game. That is what the Giants did and they had a lot of guys not play.

The Texans offense doesn't scare any team in the league, hopefully most can agree on that.

If the offense doesn't start making some big strides, we are probably going to see more games like the Giants game last Sunday, which was similar to the 2003 and 2004 seasons. No loss is good, but their are sometimes little victories inside a loss. Unfortunately, the offense is still bland and can't get it done when the chips are on the line, meanwhile the defense has very good play that amounts to nothing.

OK. So let's put some stats to all this.

Last year at this time, we were 1-7 and our 1 win came against the Browns. We were averaging 13 points a game. In our passing game, we were averaging over 5 sacks a game and only a little over 100 net yards per game (passing yards minus sack yards). We were getting 14 first downs per game. On the rushing side, we were running 26 times per game and averaging 112.5 ypg.

This year, we're 2-6 and we've beaten the Jags and the Fins. We are averaging slightly over 16 points per game. We're giving up 2.6 sacks per game and getting over 200 net passing yards per game. We're getting 19 first downs per game. We are still running 25 times per game but we're only getting 72 yards per game running.

In other words, our passing game has doubled its yardage output but we're not sticking it in the end zone.

You put all that together and I think it shows that, overall, we're in better position than we were last year at this time.

Yep, I hear ya.

But, I guess it is how you slice it and analyze it.

Some things have been improved a little, whereas some stuff has really just switched from running to passing, vice versa, or whatever.

Bottom line, Kubiak now faces the same problem Capers did with the offense, which is scoring points.

The offense is still slow in what seems to be all aspects of the game. Which makes for tough games to win unless you have a top rate defense. Which is my point.

My bigger point is, this offense is going to have to start scoring quality points in the first half (meaning 17 or more) on a regular basis or there is going to be a game here and a game there where it gets out of hand. Which will make it very tough for the Texans to make a push for .500.

Great posts..... good arguments.... but kinda unrealistic(you do understand how bad that sounds coming from me don't you??)

We need to score points.... no doubt.... but 17 in the first half??

We need to get into the habit of scoring points when we get into the redzone. that's all there is to it. If that means 17 points in the first half, or 17 points in the second half, I couldn't care less. There is another team on defense, and they get paid well to do what they do.

I don't like David's game, but his game has the potential to get us to where we want to go. Yesterday, we saw a some of what is to come. dink and dunk, dink and dunk....... then hit them downfield for a big play. we missed on 5 of those big plays that I can think of yesterday..... if we had a real running game, those would have been wide open, and easier to hit.

of course I think our run game would open up if we'd hit more often on those plays, and if we took more of those opportunities when they present themselves.

& we need to get smarter on defense. Physically, I think we match up well with most teams, we just need to play smarter.

Team is pathetic. Carr is pathetic. Many other players, schemes, perfomances are pathetic. Enough with the losing already.

A "real" fan can never be comfortable with a loss. ANY KIND of loss. A "competitive" loss is a joke. A loss is a loss is a loss.

What's'ername said that.

There's nothing wrong with not wanting to lose. None of us want to lose. All of us want our team to win. But that doesn't mean we can't realistically appraise the team. Our team is NOT going to win very many games this year. So... what are you going to do? Are you going to feel like you had a dagger stuck through your heart every week and then come on here and complain about how bad the team is? Or are you going to try to find something positive about the team?

The idea that there aren't moral victories is a really nice sound bite but that's all it is. There are moral victories. And there are losses you can feel good about. Losing a close game is a lot better than getting totally blown out. Having the team show up and play with heart and passion is a lot better than a team that looks like they're just going through the motions so they can pick up their paycheck.

As fans, all we can do is either hope for things to improve or stop being fans. And to stop being a fan just because the team is bad is the definition of "fairweather".

I totally agree that we need to start scoring points and that we've shifted were we get our yardage from. I just feel like it's going to be easier to fix the running game than to fix the passing game. I mean, remember last year when Carr threw for 48 yards against the Colts and took 5 sacks for 42 yards (which leaves a net yards of 6). I think we're closer to getting everything clicking now than we were then. Carr has proven that he can be at least an OK QB (which was in question after last season.)

I'm just really heartened by how everything seems to be coming together.

All my Denver friends have said before the season began:

1. They love Kubiak.
2. You will see improvement.
3. Wait until he has more of his kinda guys.
4. They like Rick Smith. (Smith can find guys, and oh, he counseled against the Maurice Clarett pick).

The guys Kubiak picked up so far in the draft have been nice fits, but yeah, you can't get everyone you want in one offseason.

Scoring 2 TDs in the first half would greatly improve the Texans chances in winning football games. I am not saying they have to do it every week, but I want to see it often enough that it is not surprise when it happens. I will probably go into shock if it ever happens.

If we can't expect Kubiak, Sherman, Carr, and Johnson to put up quality points in the first half, there really is no reason to talk about this offense then.

What is interesting, is that the first three losses were pretty much laid at the door of the defense by a lot of people on this board. Now the defense plays well enough two weeks in a row and the offense either digs a big hole or can't take advantage of the opportunities. I don't really hear a lot of complianing that the offense lost the last two football games, because they did. But, I read on this board that there is a lot improvement in the offense and they are headed in the right direction. The offense needs to stop being coddled and put on the hot seat.

This offense is too safe and too slow to win a big or close football game, which is the same issue that Capers had. It seems like we could be going through another rerun here.

I agree with you.... 98% anyway.

& I was there lambasting the Offense for not being able to put together a drive, and stay on the field. Especially after halftime....

but I got lambasted.

The only thing I don't like about what you are saying, is the avg..... 17 points in the first half.

yes, I'd like to be able to get 17 points in the first half, and in a game like Sundays, we definitely should have had at least 14.......

I don't think we should put numbers on it, that's all. Dallas' & Miami's defense played well...... we should have scored more....... but to say we should have had 14 or 17 in those games at the half, is silly.

Philly, Indy, Tennessee.... I agree we left alot of points on the field. Defensively, I think those teams are avg at best.

Dallas, Miami, those teams I think are solid on defense. We did as good as we should've, and if we came up short, it wasn't by much.

NYG, Washington, Jacksonville I've got a little more respect for, I believe they are fair to good defensively. Missed field goals, dropped passes, poor play calling........ I agree with you, we should have been in the 14 point range at the half. But mainly because they weren't playing as well as they normally do, or to their potential.

But every game is different, I didn't think either team would score 14 points Sunday.

i don't expect the score to get that high this coming Sunday. I don't expect 14 points by halftime of the Buffalo game, the NYJs, the Raiders, or the Pats.

But that's me.

I'm happy with Kub's progress with this team on both sides of the ball. Losing Spencer like he said was a big setback but the Jaguar game was a good example of what the offense should look like. The West Coast offense (or his version of it) isn't the most exciting to watch but it does move the chains and gives the defense a break. (note the 18 play drive at NY) The only thing I'd really like to see this team improve on is forcing turnovers. That one stat always seems to be the difference in winning or losing in the NFL (unless you're da Bears). Not sure how you coach that but I'm sure they'll work on that aspect of their game.

I hear ya but I think the offense needs to have their feet put to the fire. These guys need to pushed a lot harder. The offense is too slow and is too predictable. A defensive coordinator that limits a team to about 200 yards passing, 100 yards rushing, and 17 points is having a good day. The Texans are basically getting what defenses want them to get. The offense is not pushing the defenses in their schemes.

My expectations are not 17 points in the first half as an average, but to see it happen enough that it could happen on any Sunday regardless if on the road or at home. Right now, it would be an absolute miracle if the Texans scored two offense TDs in the first half. That is what I want to change.

The turnover stat is very important. A high percentage of teams that win that stat, win the game.

But is too much to ask for this offense to score some quality points without turnovers or a short field? Is too much to ask for them to charge in a game?

Why is there so much emphasis on the defense to keep the score low and the offense isn't expected to score more than 21 points.

One long drive in a game every game isn't that much progress in my book in the NFL.

The way I see it, Kubiak came in to get the offense going. Right now, this offense is no better than they big days of Doom Capers. The Texans are good for about 200 yards passing, 95 yards rushing, and 17 points per game. That needs to be improved where they blow those numbers out regularly during the season. I am not saying every game, just every couple of games or even a streak to show they are an offense that is capable of taking over a game. The Texans still can't execute the 2-minute drill or get a drive together quickly with some big plays.

I gotta disagree with you, this is not a down period it is an UP period...we were down last season. Cowdogs with their "Super Bowl" defense gave up 36 points to this same Giants team, according to CBS guys Texans have #28 defense overall....well the #28 Defense held them to 14 points got 2 sacks 1 interception and Manning only got 1 score through air. I say we are on way up and god help those teams that treat us like dirt when we meet again...BANG:redtowel:

I'd love to see the offense score 30 points a game but you have to look at what we have to work with right now. Good coaching and a game plan to fit what the line can do is what we have on the field. A 3 step drop and a quick pass keeps DC on his feet, you move the ball, and it takes the pressure off the OL. With more talent on the OL you have more time to let the receivers get downfield and "PRESTO".....longer completions, faster offense, and more scoring. Would a healthy Spencer have made a difference. Probably so. Kubiak has only so many players to work with and he has to give them plays they can be successful at. Note the empty backfield at NY with Lundy bouncing in and out. Worked very well and is just an indication of Kubiak finding ways to move the ball with the players he has.

I'm pretty sure Kubiak sees it the same way. What we have seen on the field so far, is not a finished product.

the finished product will avg over 300 yards passing, over 24 ppg, over 100 yds rushing, and less than 17 points scored against.

To believe what we've seen is what Kubes has been shooting for is insane.

I understand your perspective, but I am really tired of hearing about what we can do if we had more talent on offense. You could agrue the talent on defense is way less than what they have produced the last few games. You expect more, you get more!

The most successful people in life are the ones that get more out of less.

This offense needs to be expected to do more right now than we things are trending in the right direction for an expectation 1 or 2 years out. With 32 teams, the talent is spread out so thin in the NFL that this offense should be improving at a lot faster rate.

At some point, you either produce or get out of the way. This offense has guys playing in the league 4 plus years at key positions, time to get this train moving.

We need to get more players to help David. I would try to get Walter Jones, Faneca, Jeff Saturday, Hutchinson, Pace, Antonio Gates, Tomlinson, Neal, Harrison and Holt. That should about do it.

10 players. What about depth? One injury and we are right back where we started - no support.

Nice plan.

I feel your pain but try this on for size. What if Kubiak had a healthy Dom Davis and a healthy Spencer at this point in the season? I see the offense miles ahead and two more wins than we have now.

The one thing I have enjoyed the most this season is seeing the Carr bashers bite their own dust. Some find time to make witty remarks under their breath, but most of them are just waiting for the next chance to bash David (which hasn't happened as much as they had hoped).

I for one am enjoying the fact that I was right all along. David has shown improvement in areas that I could have never even imagined. The sky is the limit... I've always felt that way about David. Kubiak was the answer. Eric Moulds was a supplement.

The Texans are 2-6. If this is as good as it gets with Carr behind Center, we have once again over spent. It is frustrating rooting for a team that continues to over pay for marginal talent.

The fact that we can't consistantly run the ball makes it inheritably difficult for the offense to get going. It was sheer genius to open up the offense to 5 wide and keep the defense on it's toes, but when you have a linebacker on Moulds, you need to exploit that and we didn't. Carr needs to recognize this and call audibles accordingly, which I am under the assumption that he does not have that ability right now. Carr is not without criticism, but he is not the cure all solution if we sit him. That fumble by Cook was a game winning drive killer, something that is out of his hands.

This falls under the "witty, under your breath" category which I described above.
