Texans Biggest Needs List For 2007

BuffSoldier

Veteran
It may be a little early, but I want to know what peole feel are our biggest needs to fill before the upcoming season. Now we could definitely improve at any position in the defensive backfield, also we can, as always use some offensive lineman, and a RB.
Now as far as RB goes, it seems like alot of people have given upon DD. Does anyone think that he will be able to come back and be his old self next year, or do you guys think this is the end for DD as a Texan. The coaching staff must have some faith in his recovery because they put him on the IR instead of cutting him, or was that just a cap move.
As far as the o-line goes, I really dont think that we are in as dire need of an OT as we were last year. Charles Spencer did an okay job in pass pro and I think as the o-line gels more then the running game will start to pick up. Dont forget we also have a developing Eric Winston waiting to get on the field.
My biggest concern coming into the next season would have to be our defensive backfield. I think that if Faggins can stay healthy then we have an average pair of CBs that could be improved on, esepcially in what seems to be a deep CB draft, but my position of interest would have to be safety, and I think that our best choice is going to be LaRon Landry. I think that he is a beast of a safety and would come in and make a huge imact on our defense.

LaRon Landry or Daymeion Hughes, we will be to high in the draft to get AP, but we need Defense now, or im not against an O-line men

I just cant see Kubiak gettin a RB in the first round, no matter who it is.

Some people said Bush was the best RB ever (ESPN) in college football and we passed on him. Nobody has said that about Peterson or Lynch.

We should get on of the safeties or corners in the first, OL in the second, & look at RB in the 3rd or 4th.

We need the best friggin corner in the draft. That's our biggest need and where we'll get the most bang for our buck IMO.

That would prob be Daymeion Hughes.

I dont like most Cal guys but he is a ball hawk at corner.

To tell you guys the truth, I wouldnt mind trading back up into the 1st round to get a high caliber safety and CB. I would love to get Damien Hughes/Marcus McCaughly/Antwon Cason and LaRon Landry and just wait until the 3rd and pick up an offensive player.

Leon Hall
Damien Hughes
Aaron Ross
Antoine Cason
Marcus McCauley
Fred Bennet

All CBs that I think will go in the top 2 rounds and I would love to have on of them.

Leon Hall seems to be that player. I beleive we need safety more, but there doesn't seem to be any players of Hall's caliber at safety IMO (except maybe Griffin).

D. Hughes from Cal does have some good stats...I have not seen him play yet, but he may be a guy we could get later in the first round as Hall will go in the top 7 IMO.

As far as biggest need, as far as the draft is concerned, I would go with:
1. Safety
2. Offensive Line (LT or RG)
3. Corner
4. Linebacker
5. Running Back

I dont think we'd need to do that...we could get a player like Aaron Ross with good potential and ability in the second round.

Anyone remember a guy named Babin? We have way to many needs to trade picks away to move up a few spots.

I see Ross right now going between 2nd and 4th rounds in mocks. Yes these mocks do not matter, but you can see that a real good quality guy will be available when we pick in the 2nd and the 3rd.

Also remember if the trade had happened in last years draft, Ryans would not be a Texan right now.

As of right now im taking RB of my list of needs. I like the idea of DD, Wali, and Gado splitting the load next year. Keep all of them escpecially DD fresh and hopfully healthy.

Needs
FS
LB - CB
LT - I see Spencer as a RG, or RT in the Future.
C - If the coaching staff likes the Hog then you can remove center as a need. I havnt seen him enough

The Texans's biggest need for 2007, and every year for that matter, is a boisterous, loyal sellout crowd at every game to help the team by disrupting the opponents offensive performance and reinvigorate the Texans when they make mistakes. What they don't need is a bunch of whining crying babies booing everytime the Texans have a bad play.

That would be nice, but unless you fill the stands with 70,000 members of the Petroleum Club it ain't going to happen.

Being that Kubes & Krew tried to move up for Moroney/Williams, I think we can all agree that we were wrong about not taking a RB in the first. Maybe not first overall, or Reggie doesn't look like the kind of guy Kubiak wants.

I think Kubiak values power over speed, but good speed is also a plus. Dayne, Gado, Lundy..... Maroney, D'AngeloWilliams...... You'd think Reggies Bench would have been a good sign of the power he has, but PacManJones stood him up. Dayne would run through PacManJones.

But yeah, I'm thinking whereever our first round pick lands us, we'll get the Best CB/Safety available.

You're projecting your own preferences. The highest two draft pick/potential draft picks we know Kubiak was interested in are Clinton Portis and DeAngelo Williams both of whom fall more on the speed side of the spectrum than the power side.

A little bit........

Tatum Bell is without a doubt a speed guy. But he's running with Power now. And erasing doubts the Denver coacing staff had about him. Clinton Portis is without a doubt a speed back, but he can/will/& has pushed a pile to pick up 1, 2, 3 yards.

TerrellDavis..... speed guy?? I don't think so. Mike Anderson?? nope...... OrlandisGary?? uh-uh, RuebanDroughns?? he wishes.....

Even D'Angelo, while he has speed, I don't think that is his biggest asset as a runner. He's a power guy that will bust tackles and sprint for the endzone.

Depends on what we do in free agency.

We need defense. SS, FS, CB, OLB, DT, DE.

Unless DD is getting a cartilage transplant or spontaneously regrowing it we also need a RB.

Here is the scenarios that could happen.

You don't want to start a rookie D unless you are willing to go through a sixth straight losing season.

I can't for see any team letting a good Safety go to free agency. They are a tad bit hard to come by, but I do expect there to be some OLB's to make there way onto the market as well as DT's. Above all else the Texans need to pick up a veteran CB. Do the same thing for Faggins and DRob that Moulds is doing for AJ. Put Faggins back to the Nickle and groome him for our future. Some players need direction and guidance. Some don't. That is why I am not concerned about our LB's needing veteran leadership cus I feel Ryans is doing a stellar job of going out and being that veteran. Not saying we don't need OLB's, just that we don't need one to specifically teach.

More than likely I see us targeting a CB and DT in free agency and then drafting a Safety and OLB in rounds one and two.

Running back gets tricky. A lot on this board would like to see Turner come here but I don't see San Diego not putting the franchise tag on him and then trading him for a first rounder. There is also the Chicago situation. I don't see how they can continue to have Thomas and Benson. I don't think they would let Thomas go b/c the Bears players are not fond of Benson. I can see Benson getting traded but for no less than a number 1 pick. Will Holmes be healthy next year? If so he won't be back as a Chief. Is he damaged goods? Does he have just enough left in him to help the team win a championship? If so what is he worth? McCallister and Bush. Do you think the Saints would continue to run with those two or give the reigns over to Bush. If thats the case Duece will want to be out of N.O. Then there is good ole Ricky Williams. I like Ricky. The only reason he even became a distraction was b/c the league and media made it one. I would take Ricky in a heart beat. He is a good kid. He's not a thug, he hasn't killed anyone or sold cocaine over his cell phone or thrown his pregnant girlfriend out of a moving car. So get over yourselves. However, Brown stinks and if that team is going to be good they will need another running back.

Thats all that I see as far as free agency goes for running backs. I am still keeping my fingers crossed that DD will be healthy next year.

This draft is going to be a goofy one. We definitely need Safety's but where do you draft them? With a shallow running back class do you take a RB? I personally say no just b/c Manning continues to kill us thru the air every single year.

But that is just my two cents.

They both have speed but they are both balanced...and both seem to have the mindset of pick up as many yards as possible running between tackles. Of course they will break a big run with speed if giving the opportunity, but they don't seem to try for it on almost every run like Reggie does. Both of these guys are known for picking up an extra yard or two after the initial hit. I dont know how much of that is in Reggie Bush.

As far as safeties in free agency...it would be nice if Adrian Wilson became available. IMO, he's one of the best safeties in the league, only problem is his team's defense hasn't been playing that great the last few years.

SD won't be putting a franchise tag on him. He will be a RFA so they have the option of making a low, mid or high tender on him. The high tender will be around $1.5 mil and would carry compensation of a 1st and 3rd if another team signed him without working out a lower deal with SD.

Wilson's contract with the Cardinals runs through 2009 so I wouldnt bet on him getting released. That would be a decent sized cap hit for them.

The Texans needs are to nail every round in the draft (especially their 1st pick with elite talent) be buyers durning free agency and catch finds who slip through the cracks & make shrewd judgements keeping or releasing their own.

that being said drafting a elite tackle with their first pick is a priority if available. shutdown corner if available. FS or SS with that 2nd rd pick, while I expect Landry, Meriweather & Griffen to all be gone by this time (if one of them falls that would work) a guy I really like here would be ND FS Tom Zbikowski -

If we win a few more, we will be drafting around 10 to 15. I think taking Pat Willis from Mississippi would be great. Put him in the middle. And your LB core could look like this.

MLB-Willis
WLB- Ryans
SLB- Wong (or FA).

I love Ryans, but MLB is not his natural positions. Imagine what he could do a WLB instead of Greenwood. By taking Willis you upgrade two positions with one pick.

Then in the second take the best DB on the board.

Stop reading pre-draft stuff and trying to stick Ryans outside. From the horse's mouth:

Perhaps more impressive than Ryans' play has been his ability to become a leader on the defense as a 22-year-old rookie. It's a role Kubiak encouraged him to embrace.

"This is the role he needed to play for this team," Kubiak
said. "He's taken it on and been exceptional. For the future of the team to think that he will be in the middle for this football team for a long, long time, leading this defense, that's very encouraging."

His coverage skills as a FS leave a lot to be desired. Though he is extremely fast and can return punts very well. I just see him as more of a Bob Sanders SS than a true FS.

I read that somewhere and it just didnt click. I still wouldn't give a first and third. Thats crazy talk.

In order of need in my opinion...

1. CB to start opposite Dunta
2. S to replace CC
3. LB to add depth and become a starter
4. RB to push for starting role if DD doesnt come back and Lunday/Gado dont emerge
5. DT for depth and youth
6. G to eventually unseat McKinniy
7. WR depending on what happens with Mathis

Not to disagree with you, but what else is Kubiak going to say, "We don't have a MLB, and since Ryans is the best we got at it. We put him there"

Maybe Ryans is better at MLB than OLB, but until he plays some outside we will never know. I will be happy with Rufus from OU also, and we could leave Ryans in the MLB. I just think Willis would be better.

I wouldn't refer to him as a kid. Instead, I would say he is a troubled young man. Irregardless of your feelings about Ricky, he broke the rules as well as the law. I know smoking marijuana is a routine practice for some people, Willie Nelson comes to mind, but that still doesn't make it legal. In addition to his problems with that his behavior has been erratic at times and I seriously believe he needs some help with some possible mental health issues. When all of that is taken into consideration I don't believe he is right for the Texans, and I don't think playing in the NFL is right for him right now either. Maybe if he gets the proper help he needs then he could return to the NFL, but as for now I think it is a recipe for disaster. It could even have a tragic ending for him if the pressure of the spotlight drives his seemingly unstable mental condition to become suicidal. Now I'm not a huge Ricky Williams fan, as you may be, but I certainly don't want to see that happen to him.

Ricky has an anxiety disorder...I think it was once said that weed made him feel more comfortable. I am sure there are alot of NFL players that smoke weed, not just Ricky. Doesn't make him a bad player or a bad person...it obviously didn't effect his playing ability. They should just legalize it and Ricky would have had 1000s of yards in the years he missed. It's not like it hurts anyone.

Even if it were to become legal that doesn't neccesarily mean it would be approved for use by NFL players. There are substances that are, or were legal for use in the USA that are banned by the NFL. As for it doesn't hurt anyone, that is your opinion. There are many people that would very much disagree with you about that.

That could be said for any substance that alters ones reality. Whether its prescription, legal or illegal.

I do know this, the difference in attitudes between drunks and pot heads are night and day. You are more apt to be violent (not saying everyone is) and drive then you are if you smoking the wacky tobacy. Instead of raising your fists you may want to state you find ballet a strange sounding word and map out why its a strange sounding word.

I also believe our LB corps is weakest in pass coverage, and play recognition. I'd prefer to have Wong at MLB, Ryans at Will, to get Greenwood(which I think is our weakest LB) off the field.

I'm not taking anything away from Ryans, but I think he, Wong & Orr make our strongest LB corps....... & Ryans being younger, hopefully quicker, would be a better fit at Will than Wong would.

Weaker than Orr? Orr's production so far is what, 7 tackles in 6 games?

I stand corrected.

Orr has 10 tackles in 6 games

Greenwood has 24

Ryans has 44.

Sad to think one guy counts for a shade under 55% of total LB production. Not only that, but your ROOKIE LB.

TY, rep coming your way unless I'm out. My Question are you saying the RB class is so thin that you're willing to throw away a draft pick to garner a second teir running back ? Smells like a CC move to me. I mean the top of the third round is esentially a second second round pick. That guy should be good enough to challenge a starter in camp.

I think the general thinking is that Turner would be starting on many an NFL team that isn't starting LT. They believe he'd be a starter over the guys we have, and be as good as any back we might get with next years first.

& as far as I can tell, INfantrycak hasn't said one way or another if MT was worth the compensation that would be required to get him, he's just giving us the 411 on what they will ask for him.

The Chargers are in a good situation with MT. The kid has performed well, and has earned value behind LT. But just because he isn't going to start on their team, is no reason for them to trade him, so the asking price is going to be high, to make it worth it for them.

Much like the same thing that happend with the Oilers when they had both Warren Moon and Cody Carlson.

My fear is the Texans drafting a RB just to draft a RB. Remember when the Oilers lost Sean Jones and William Fuller? They drafted Henry Ford. Wasn't he great.

I think the staff is smarter than that. Rick Smith and Kubiak should make some good decisions in the draft this year.

07 off-season sutures

I feel like our biggest needs are easily on defense. The problem is I don’t see any overwhelming talent at a need position on defense. This looks to be a heavily offensive laden draft pool at the top, and free agency looks a bit weak to.

I’ve always kinda felt like a lack of talent on offense can be compensated by scheme, while a lack of talent on defense is a constant liability

That being said, I feel like our team needs are pretty well defined…

1. cornerback

Since Glenn departed we’ve been torched again and again…with the recent blitz happy tendencies of Richard smith another quality cb is even more important.

2. outside linebacker (sam or will)

When do Orr and Greenwood plan on earning their checks? I want an instinctive athlete who has his name called more then once every 4 games. We’re still playing with 3-4 linebackers and that needs to change.

3. safety

I’ve watched miserable coverage, bad angles, and junior high tackling safeties who are always late on the deep ball. One of these 2 safety spots has to be addressed this year. I’d like to hope one of the 3 top safeties will fall to us in the second round. Its time to get a ball hawk.

4. offensive line

Needless to say there’s a certain stigma about our line for good reason. While the ol play has improved, it’s clearly not where it should be. Flannigan, Weigert, and McKinney are not spring chickens, and there is no one on this team with probowl potential.

Much like how the Steelers never have a bad starting linebacker because they take at least one in every draft, I’d like to see the Texans begin that trend regardless of need. I’d like to see a 4th or 5th round selection here as well as a quality free agent acquisition this year.

5. Defensive tackle

I don’t consider this position a top priority for a number of reasons. Weaver and Williams have the flexibility to play DT if necessary. Payne will be back. In a perfect world Travis Johnson gets significantly better. And lastly the sheer number of other needs outweigh this one IMO.

5. running back

Lots of angles to consider here. What’s the status on Davis? Will Lundy continue to emerge? Do you believe in the old bronco’s mantra about the system making running backs successful? Is the problem the line or the running back? I’ve always felt due to the career expectancy of a running back that this is the last piece to add on a playoff team. We’ll have a much better idea by the end of the season, but right now I’d be happy with another 5th to 6th round addition.

Typically, when I look to the off-season I don’t just layout 1 thru 7 in draft picks…I also consider another set of additions via free agency…with roughly 15 to 20 million dollars in free agency things workout about like this:

STARTERS AQUIRED THRU FREE AGENCY

1. Better then average player
2. Mediocre starter
3. Mediocre starter

All other additions equal depth.

The offensive line and safety pools currently look diverse with lots of names, thou no superstars…our other areas of need will require pipe dreams and substantial money.

In the draft I’m currently a big fan of a trade back scenario. I think a specific offense and conversion to the 4-3 defense validate that opinion. The fact that there are no premier stud defensive prospects at our areas of need reinforce that opinion.

Lets remember based on only 1 off-season, kubiak has shown a tendency to draft need vs. best player available, and he’s shown a propensity to trade when he feels it’s necessary. Ultimately, the way I picture things in the 07 off-season, it all comes together roughly like this:

Free agency in any given order:

1. Linebacker
2. Offensive line
3. Safety

Draft:

1. Cornerback / linebacker
1. Cornerback / linebacker - ( trade )
2. Safety
3. Offensive line?
4. Running back?
5. bpa
6. bpa
7. bpa

in closing, I’d like to comment that the titan’s game was fairly miserable to watch. If reliant energy spent half the time providing shock therapy for penalties that they do for commercials we’d be a much better team.

08 playoffs………….

Im with out a doubt taking RB of my list of needs.

The combination of DD and Wali seems pretty awesome to me. Ofcourse we have to get DD healthy first. Hopfully Wali can keep this up all season.

I remember sombody saying in another thread that if we drafted a MLB in the first round that we could move D Ryans to OLB and improve two positions. Well with Zach Wiegerts performance today im think we could draft a LT and move Spencer to RG. Which could also improve two positions.

Then you can draft the bpa out of LB, FS or CB in the second and third rounds

That was probably me. But I like your idea too, but what do you do with Wiegert (he plays RT) or did you mean move Spencer to RT.
